a flooded case but four boys and their soccer coach are still trapped and rescuers are now racing against the clock to save them after eighteen days underground pulled their locks. culture makes a place for history out the world cup in tonight's first semifinal they look to knock out their neighbor france and reach the final for the first time. i'm sumi so much going to thank you for joining us we start with some breaking news from china who has learned that the widow of the chinese nobel peace prize winner lucia has left china. boarded a finnish airliner a few hours ago when this expected in berlin later today lou had been under house arrest since two thousand and ten when her husband was awarded the nobel peace prize she died of cancer while in prison one year ago the german government has been pushing for lou's release since that. her departure from beijing today comes
9:02 am
as chinese premier league wraps up a short visit to berlin. and our correspondent kong when ye is in taipei following the story for us good to see you so has it actually been confirmed that lucia has left china what can you tell us. yes we have talked to some of the fruits of the close relationship of her base so they and her. solution is now headed to the art of light. and actually she was leaving beijing this morning at a rather low time and she is actually showing alone on her own and then you know and you know how many the chinese government and her brother new way is not allowed to leave china. will see her see her sister are smiling and then are useless and have told us that actually
9:03 am
a child's. home we were. able to leave at the end of the smoke all of. us were just. so are many of us surprised. my diskin why this is so significant what role did lucia and her late husband lucia ball play in china's dissident movement. first time. in a while. he sighs. and is insanely shy has been under house arrest for almost. an hour and. actually is now in some very serious mental illness sense impression because of how successful at that time and international society and also seeing the rise by calling for
9:04 am
these for a long time and it has been a very significant. move for lucia our lead in china so i think. rather well now looking forward to the response of the chinese guy and why she coming to berlin. here's why no earth countries we're still talking about human issues to the chinese government witness. and how it is an art show we got you know they have has been has not been supporting china this is. a lot of hype and actually i mean hundreds very interesting. china's threw her into a chinese now this and show me actually we don't know if there are any questions you are on this issue but it is close and. talk about immigration we're trying to track engine or so we'll see. correspondent kong lindy

for us in taipei thank you very much for bring us up to date. in thailand the final stage of the operation to extract the last five members of a youth soccer team from a flooded cave is underway officials have promised that the four boys and their coach will reach daylight in the coming hours divers have already brought out eight boys in the last two days now rescuers are under pressure to conclude the operation before more heavy rain hits the region. rescuers advance into the cave before the next phase of the operation time and the weather are against them four of the boys and their coach is still trapped underground and more heavy monsoon rains a full cost but euphoria over the eight boys rescued so far has lifted spirits. doctors say the boys already brought out shows signs of infection and are hungry
9:06 am
but doing well families gathered at the hospital where they're being cared for can only wait for news of those still inside. i am very worried about them i pray for them all the time and hope the old coming out safely. but the lying war. there are mixed feelings too for classmates and teachers at the boys' school. i feel happy. my korean followed off the rest of them into care but i trust in the risk to keep and i think they must do it this boy just wants to be reunited with his friend whose nickname is night. i hope you can get back here within a week or so. i want to take him to a restaurant so we can spend some time together. the second day's rescue operation was two hours faster than the first and bringing out the last five members of the group is becoming ever more urgent. florian nish is following the
9:07 am
story for us years and he's near the cave complex in northern thailand and joins us for more hi florian so the divers have gone back into the cave what is the latest on today's operation. seems like a mission impossible only a few days ago now by the looks of it seems to be going large clock work we have seen just a few hours ago very confident oafish old shoring up as they would bring out the remaining five in today basically or they would at least give everything and even adapt their rescue tactics that they had applied for the previous two days when they were only they had only brought out four so now they're confident enough to go for all five of them and that was really a big surprise because everyone had thought they would stick to their routine but
9:08 am
they said they felt comfortable enough they gained enough experience over two days so we're actually expecting all five to come out today a story and there's been a lot of concerns about rain about the weather in that region how much time do the divers actually have to complete the rescue. but as you can see the sun is shining now after pretty much torrential rain showers all through the night so there really has been a lot of water but we were assured by the rescue helpers that it takes quite a while for this rain to actually trickle down the mountain and into the cave they told us this morning that the water levels inside the cave have not risen at all yet so it's not really that much of a race against time any more now obviously still a lot can go wrong but we have seen very very confident rescue people here in thailand and for just briefly if you can what can you tell us about the boys who
9:09 am
have already been rescued at this point. taken to the hospital how are they doing. that was also good news they said basically all aides that are already in the hospital they're doing fairly well there and overall good condition two of them are suffering from minor pneumonia they have all been given antibiotics and there is still isolated space. to to stay in the hospital for one week we were told but they're all in good shape. right to give these florian nish with the very latest from northern thailand florian thank you. now to some other stories making headlines around the world a third day of monsoon rains has brought flooding to parts of the indian city of mumbai the heavy rainfall is caused instruction to road and rail links and meteorologist saying it is expected to continue for another four days the government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges. and hundreds of supporters of nicaragua's

9:15 am
sports with us hi mark so this is france and belgium and france are the slight favorites going and yes you'd have to say so given they've won the world cup before in one thousand nine hundred belgium and never won it now of course there's no players left from one thousand nine hundred eight but there is the coach who was the captain that year he's now the coach so he can impart a lot of experience and knowledge and you have to say probably griezmann france have the player of the last two years and will football maybe even more so than messi dare i say it so yeah france favorites. the captain of france and the goalkeeper is a little bit worried by belgium let's take a little as. i think belgium of the most complete team in all possible aspects of the game at this tournament they know how to defend their hearts were tack to counter-attack very strong in the air strong in everything. they have everything they need to be a great team and they are
9:16 am
a great team. it's a fantastic generation and to beat them we will have to play a great match. yes so he's sort of playing down expectations a little bit there for france's knickers who go east and the rest of the french team know how strong belgium are exactly i saw just how good is this belgian team well if you look at it i mean he said there there are a complete team probably the most complete team in the tournament and they're strikers they're attacking players just phenomenal i mean you've got romelu lukaku kevin the point and it in has are probably three of the best five players in the english premier league which is quite a shout belgium i've also got a little secret weapon cherry on ri who played for friends in the one nine hundred ninety eight tournament is now the assistant manager of belgium so his loyalties are a big confused there but oversee once the team is employed by to win so they're going to get a little bit of inside knowledge on france i mean belgium are everybody's dark horses including mine before the tournament but they really have got what it takes
9:17 am
to pull this off in what should be a classic semifinal let's have a look now how strong belgium really are. belgium are just one game away from reaching the world cup final for the first time in their history. the red devils have been one of the most exciting teams at the world cup sending their fans into a frenzy was knocking out the favorites brazil supporters believe their neighbors archrivals france will be the next team they send home. after this match i believe anything is possible so they're gonna when i feel i can play against everybody everything so no problem will be them all belgium is a small country as we know. live in a million people living there and we are proud of what we can achieve and we can do as a group. belgium have scored more goals than any other team in russia they have one
9:18 am
of the best goalkeepers in. and their assistant coach french dotty harry on read knows how to win a world cup. well the only euros he's won the world cup so for us it's very important. a lot of players look up to him because he's a legend in football and these belgian players now have the chance to become legends in their own right and bring home the world cup. ok mark two very well matched teams what's going to make the difference here i think it's the experience of the tournament so far belgium had a really tough test against japan of course in the last sixteen they were two no down and four back to win three two and obviously they're a difficult game against brazil while france maybe haven't quite been tested yet they had a reason to talk going to get we know this argentina side isn't as good as it has been in previous years so i'd say that experience probably puts belgium in good stead at chile so although france of favorites i'm still tipping belgium. mark

meadows thank you very much mark to some tennis news now defending men's champion roger federer has yet to drop a set at wimbledon he breezed into the quarter finals defeating france's adrien monnerie no it's a different story in the women's draw however with the top seeds continuing to fall and that means germany's angela cabot the eleventh seed is now the highest ranked female player left in the competition she beat belinda bench which in straight sets now the exodus of top seeds place into serene serina williams hands she's through to the last eight after thrashing afghan yet were deena well the only return to action in march after giving birth to her first child. time for business now the trade war has car makers starting their engines monika absolutely they have to react to this is special to us all to make a tesla is the first actually to hike prices in the world's largest come market and that of course is china analysts say others are likely to take the same road in

9:21 am
london to discuss their prospects of joining the e.u. the countries include bosnia and herzegovina serbia cause of all mussed cydonia albania and montenegro by joining the e.u. they hope to generate greater wealth but before the western balkans can hope to benefit from europe's economic strengths they've got some homework to do. all in all the west balkans are quite a way along the path to membership according to sources in brussels they've made progress on the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary the legislative process is also being brought in line with the european union. but membership also means integration in the common market business must be competitive and in many cases that's a long way off the most important yardstick for the economic strength of a country is its gross domestic product in albania g.d.p. per capita is only about three thousand eight hundred fifty euros per year in
9:22 am
macedonia it's only a little bit around four thousand six hundred by comparison e.u. member states have an average g.d.p. of thirty two thousand seven hundred euros annually about eight times higher. then there's the widespread corruption coupled with organized crime and money laundering but what are the alternatives for the region russia turkey and china are all trying to build their influence in the balkans that's putting pressure on the e.u. to accelerate the accession process so the pressure is on the west balkans economically fit to join the e.u. well that's what i asked analyst a douche on the ridge it. well i think that most of the countries which previously joined the you were actually not fit to join the e.u. it's a process of catching up for the conference of the worst some bold starting point is not that favorable they had a huge wall behind them in the ninety's of the last century so the prime reason for
9:23 am
the e.u. to engage with have a simple consists not of economic nature it's about conflict transformation and about ensuring peace in the whole of the continent so this is the reason why the e.u. is highly interested to have the countries on board quite soon you just said to right at the beginning of your on so that most of the country certainly in the southern europeans you would fit economically to join the e.u. is the us strong enough to make the same mistakes all over again. i don't think that is a mistake so i think that this is a natural way to deal with some historic problems the countries of saddam is the new rope already now deeply integrated into the use economies at the moment seventy five percent of the trade of the six of these european economies is with the e.u. chiefly with germany and in italy ninety percent of the banking capital comes from the e.u. most foreign direct investments come from the e.u. and remittances from migrant workers and parts of the e.u. are key of the law of the already in place there for instance in the aviation union
9:24 am
the energy union so these countries are actually not outside of the e.u. they're swallowed by the e.u. but not fully. integrated at the moment. there is the population of the sufis europeans is going through its course it is three point five percent of the populace so they will not have the e.u. will not have a problem with full integrating this country it's a matter of political will and also whether the leaders of the sea risks the mess that political risks if they tackle enlargement foster i mean obviously there must be some risks because a and original date of accession which was twenty twenty five is a radio off the table when do you think would be a feasible date for the west balkans or at least some of those countries to join the e.u. . these are speculations and this doesn't help us very much. the problem is that type of the economic relations that has been established between the e.u.
9:25 am
and the southeast european six economists is actually prolonging the time of waiting to achieve convergence to catch up with the e.u. why is this the countries of the region have a huge trade deficit with the e.u. for about two hundred billion euros in the last ten years to pay for importing so much they have to save they have to have a stereotype policies they have to cut on the investments and because they. can't accumulate enough capital for investments the growth rates are not that because there should be so what they need at this moment is access to e.u. structural inclusion phones even before membership this is the only way to ensure faster growth rates so listening to the start of that summit yesterday it was also mainly about economic cooperation did you see the signals the right signals in place of what you mentioned the kind of cooperation that the west balkans need. i could be forgiven for saying that having somebody on western balkans
9:26 am
enlargement in london this morning is in the arse of some. viewers as an insult to injury a country which is leaving of the e.u. is advocating enlargement and the government is falling apart along with us today so perhaps this was not to have to suffer enormously have such a summit indeed. there from the german institute for international and security affairs in brussels thank you so much for your time. thank you. coffee chain starbucks is the latest corporate giant pledging to eliminate plastic straws it expects all of its twenty eight thousand stores to have switched to alternatives by twenty twenty plastic stores that will be replaced by recyclable it's the small raced opening customers who can forego stores will receive paypal stores or ones made of a compostable plastic the huge environmental impact of plastic stores is making
