this is d.w. news live from berlin a closely watched summit between donald trump and lot more prudent is underway in helsinki as they greeted each other the u.s. president said i really think the world wants to see us get along good and said it was time to talk about difficult multinational issues trump had earlier tweeted relations with russia have never been worse thanks to years of u.s.
3:01 pm
foolishness we have complete coverage. also coming up france rules football again lead new list of the world cup trophy last night the french defeating a resilience croatian side in the final in moscow setting off wild celebrations back home in paris although police had to get involved when things got out and strolled. on the pitch loop rushed proration hoping for a convincing protrude when croatia never gave up but their strong effort just wasn't enough on the night. i'm sumi so much going to good to have you with us u.s. president donald trump has begun his first ever summit with russia's vladimir putin as the meeting kicked off in helsinki trump said he hoped to forge better ties with putin several thorny issues have dominated the runup to the talks among them conflicts in ukraine and syria and charges of russian meddling in the u.s.
3:02 pm
presidential election put in said the time had arrived for serious talks about bilateral relations. now as the two leaders us sat together had their talks both remarked on what they were expecting. most importantly we have a lot of good things to go. things to go. it's going to do everything for the trade to be literary miss the new we. will be talking a little bit about china. the mutual friend president xi the conditions of course it was time that we had a thorough conversation about relations between our countries and about many issues worldwide and there are quite a few that demand our attention. or let's bring in data views teri schultz she's covering today's summit in helsinki for us hi terry good to see you so both leaders are meeting now any indication how this meeting is going. we know absolutely nothing about what's happening inside the presidential palace here in helsinki one
3:03 pm
thing about finland the finns don't leak so if president putin and president trump don't let things slip from out of the meeting we're not going to hear it from the finns and we don't know anything the two leaders were due to get underway with a one on one meeting and then we expect that it will move into a broader session but so far nothing out of the presidential palace dettori what do you make of the fact that both leader as the head of their talks were very big about what was on the agenda. that's right we heard both president trump and president putin just sort of give an overview but the things that were not said in that list of course will be disturbing for some people president trump mentioned china but he didn't mention ukraine he didn't mention syria he certainly didn't mention human rights he didn't mention election interference some of the issues that observation would be very interested in hearing these two men address president putin was even more vague than that so indeed who knows if we'll ever
3:04 pm
find out what happens in the one on one meeting with no no takers present as far as we were led to believe so yeah just remains to be seen in this press conference that we're hoping to hear the fact that no one no takers as you said the group of advisors will be present for this one on one meeting before then expands to the larger group how is that gone down. certainly ahead of this meeting that was very upsetting for people including those in the administration. this being the first meeting between the two men you would really want to get a sense of of what they talk about what is seen as most important to the two of them and you never know how either of them are going to play this coming out president putin is by far the more experienced statesman he will probably know how to how to spin this in in his in his favor and of course president putin sorry president from comes out of meetings saying most of the time that everything was tremendous if he feels like they went in his way so it really is
3:05 pm
a toss up and i have to say here at that the international press center everyone is asking each other what we can expect and none of us have any answers these are very unpredictable leaders and historic summit there in helsinki a between these two leaders terry give us an idea what the atmosphere has been like in the lead up to this meeting. a lot of us including myself have been here in helsinki for other summits i was here when president bush met. gorbachev and also when president clinton met president yeltsin so a lot of us are sort of mr eldrick about the way the summits happened in the old days and in fact i was just outside being blocked on the street for almost an hour because we could we weren't even allowed to cross the street and there were people remarking that when president bush and gorbachev came people lined the streets by choice to wave at the leaders they actually drove by with their windows open so that just gives you a sense of how security has changed down on the market square across from the
3:06 pm
presidential palace that used to remain completely open one seller told me yesterday that she had sold earrings to betty ford in one thousand nine hundred seventy five meeting so things are very much on lockdown here in the finnish capital and we're all just waiting for this press conference where people are hoping to be enlightened about just what has happened inside the palace all right good of you teri schultz are keeping track of the very latest developments there for us in helsinki thank you terry let's get the view now from moscow and washington we have emily sherwin of the russian capital and alexander phenomena in the u.s. good to see you both now we heard there from terry there's a long list of issues that the leaders may or may not talk about so what do they actually want to get out of these talks alexander let's start with you what's in this for donald trump. well i think it's fair to say. main goal is really to establish a good person a working relationship with the russian president because trump believes to.
3:07 pm
long that that would help put both countries to improve their relations and to maybe seoul some very important international problems we have already heard what trump would like to talk about with putin he talked about trade military nuclear missile that's actually something that we could see progress on what he didn't mention and terry was already talking about it's russia's aggressive behavior russia's aggression on american democracy russia's aggression in ukraine and mentioning these issues was met here with a lot of criticism in the united states we don't know whether there are going to talk about that in their one on one meeting were they have talked about that and then they will be interesting were we really really going to learn what the jurors
3:08 pm
have talked about at this meeting all right so for us from perspective you're saying alexandra stop wishing them good working relationship is first and foremost emily what about for a lot of what is at stake here for him. i mean for a lot in your putin there's not that much at stake he's certainly not under the same amount of pressure as trump is at home even the fact that putin has managed to meet trump will be seen as a victory here in russia and it seems from the statements the opening statements that we saw from both leaders and particularly from bloody near putin which were very vague putin kind of talked about a host of multinational issues that the two leaders would be discussing this kind of vagueness seems to point to the fact that the russians have adopted a very much a wait and see paula. see here to see what they can get out of this meeting and the stakes are low because this this meeting will certainly portray russia as an
3:09 pm
important player on the world stage and in a way statement today about the fact that the u.s. and russia are two are the two main nuclear powers on the world stage will play into putin's hands they're really portraying russia as an important player and you know the russians i think will be hoping to kind of perhaps get more meetings out of this first initial meeting further down the line. and in the room of course is the accusations that russia meddled in the us elections in two thousand and sixteen and on friday the u.s. justice department indicting twelve russians on charges of hacking your aleksandra how much pressure is there for donald trump to really stand up to vladimir putin on this issue. well i think that president trump is really under a lot of pressure to raise these issues to confront the russian president especially. u.s. development on friday after twelve russian intelligence officers were indicted last
3:10 pm
friday because we are not talking about some russians who had allegedly tried to interfere in the u.s. presidential elections we are talking about the russian state allegedly trying to interfere in the u.s. so that's a totally different issue right now so i think there is a lot of pressure from democrats members of the democratic party but also from his own party to talk about this to confront putin however we just have to keep in mind that he has been very reluctant to criticize the russian president to talk about this issue because it's always for him see instead talking about russia's meddling in the u.s. election which means that he's victory in this election is putting into question emily if we do see donald trump push button or putin on this question how would he react how he's going to move smooth over that controversy. well for
3:11 pm
vladimir putin then again this isn't really a big worry he's presumably going to repeat what he's been saying all along that the russians never how act the us elections in two thousand and sixteen and that they aren't interested in meddling in the us in the us is internal affairs he may even go further and propose some kind of common plan or common rules in cyber space on cyber security but there is definitely a sense that. you know putin is expecting these accusations and that he will just smooth them over with what he said before now ahead of the meeting we heard russian presidential aide saying that the these new indictments of twelve russians that we saw last week from the u.s. are simply an attempt to disrupt this meeting today but from the russian point of view these new accusations aren't really anything new and they won't really disrupt
3:12 pm
the proceedings today now alexander coming back you know trump is already facing allegations of colluding with russia and speaking here one on one with me putin this is a summit that leaders on both sides of the aisle actually called on donald trump to call off the summit how much do you know how much of this is going down well in the u.s. how much support does donald trump house in pursuing this closer ties with vladimir . well i think that many russian experts here are really concerned opponents especially about this for a one on one meeting when all were only interpreted as our presence because they know that it will be putin's force meeting with or for you as president he's meeting with he is a very experienced politician and many here are really the afraid that president trump can be taken advantage of by a lot in the pool we have to say that. has been pushing for this summit with
3:13 pm
putin for a long time to spy skepticism and warnings from within his administration and from experts outside of his administration. all right our correspondents are all with some fun naaman in washington and emily sherwin in moscow thank you both for your analysis. let's get the european perspective on all of this with nicole rembert she's from the german council on foreign relations thank you for joining us in our studio we saw donald trump in an interview ahead of the summit again say the european union is a foe when it comes to trade how worried is europe this is coming of course off the heels of a very difficult nato summit where the nato summit ended with a common declaration so in this respect the europeans can be literally relieved but there are the issues that are or would be most likely discussed between putin and trump might not be as easy to be solved dear pein certainly expect from the meeting
3:14 pm
on a support off the security umbrella off the united states spreading also to the border countries like poland the baltic states and they're very concerned that maybe in this discussion these issues will not be taken as seriously or compromises to putin in certain aspects of security issues so what about nato expansion for example into eastern europe what are the concerns there that european leaders have over what donald trump might do or say well if you makes concessions for example with respect to the intervention off russia and ukraine this is certainly a signal all to the countries want to join nato all who are under the protection of nato and these are the issues europeans want him to discuss but they don't want to compromise instead they want to see clear signals when it comes to nonproliferation often ok and what that weapons fact would be and i outcome the europeans which you
3:15 pm
know appreciate and of course to find a solution or two to somehow get russia to to be more constructive with respect to conflicts like the conflict in syria where russia placed an important role well the nato summit certainly made clear that what we have seen from the trumpet ministration is a lot of mixed messages how. more e.u. leaders really dealing with that this is an important alliance for the keep a straight face and they tried to first of all support the transfer of integration but they they have have also been some critical voices and what is a good outcome basically is that the europeans are reminded that they have to look after their security as well and if that means stay they will invest more in defense that's a positive signal but what has changed very much is the tone in which europe and the united states and dealing with each other and this is something you need in
3:16 pm
diplomacy you need a constructive dialogue and to so far we haven't seen much of that at this trip with tensions rising between the e.u. and russia could be a good thing that report and donald trump are sitting down together perhaps to clear some of that air some of these tensions that have been arising well the fact that they are talking is certainly something even the german government today appreciate it down the spokes person off the chancellor pointed out that russia is a key in many conflicts permanent member of the u.n. security council so you need russia for the solution and on the other hand the expectation is also that trump stays tough on the issues where russia europe and the united states have a different view like i said on ukraine or on the protection off the baltic countries on countries said you don't want to join nato here europe expects from the meetings that. doesn't change the policy that has been there before so
3:17 pm
still very much hoping for a positive outcome for europe at least in the summit. from the german council on foreign relations thank you for sharing your insight with us. the european union has asked the united states china and russia to ease global trade tensions saying there is a danger they could spiral out of control european council president donald tusk was speaking in beijing today at the opening of a summit between china and the european union it comes at a time when both the e.u.'s china find themselves targeted by u.s. tariffs is part of washington's america first policy. its trade tensions continue to flare elsewhere there are signs that the economic relationship between the e.u. and china remain stable the two sides say they're close to reaching a bilateral investment agreement that commitment comes as fears grow over the impact of america's unpredictability today on the thing of europe meets
3:18 pm
china in the. american president trump and russian president putin can give. all of the fact. that the architecture of the world is changing before all of the realities. and to defy our common responsibility to make it the change for the better. china and the e.u. also signed their first joint declaration since twenty fifteen the document mentions the need to address overcapacity on the global steel markets officials also discuss plans to reform world trade organization rules this on the same day that china filed a w t o challenge to u.s. tariffs on chinese goods. to june china and the e.u. are willing to talk about reforming and improving the w t o's on the basis that it maintains its core principles and continues to operate based on rules that foster
3:19 pm
free trade. sudha change. while china continues to post strong growth there are fears that a further escalation in its trade right with the united states could slow down the economy the latest figures show that chinese g.d.p. grew six point seven percent in the second quarter that's slightly less than in the previous three months the e.u. is a key trading partner for china and that's relationship sour elsewhere beijing is especially keen to maintain core deal trade ties with the bloc. our financial correspondent. joins us now from singapore hundred donald trump has just called the e.u. afo on trade is now the time for europe and china to strengthen economic ties in. yes get it would be a good time for china to pacify the trade pact with the e.u. particularly after multiple rounds of complaints from european companies of china's
3:20 pm
unfriendliness when it comes to setting up shop in european countries so right now the ball truly is in china's court when it comes to widening its treat gates perhaps this could be the push the that they will need to finally make that happen what does china want from the e.u. . what i think china wants reassurance from the e.u. of a trade alliance that is going to be of course the official and the prestige of that friendship is going to lend to china's space suit of an international treaty status but the e.u. has also made it quite clear and now in the week of china's trying to reverse its risks reactions. trade opportunities remain open it will be more wary of china's sanna's in the game and really just a bit of technical problems there just briefly how much does the trade dispute with
3:21 pm
the u.s. china china does stand to lose a good portion of their heavily reliant export market with many consumer goods assembled and reshipped out of china. to the u.s. so the terrorists will actually hurt the u.s. more when it when china poses on those price hikes. in singapore for us thank you german from a set of goals and technology company map because stepping up its presence in china the company has signed deals with ali baba health open deck technology center in shanghai and is adding a university in shanghai to its global network of genome editing research and that will open a two hundred fifty million euro factory in tong next year all these moves mark the company's three hundred fiftieth anniversary this year. it all started here with a pharmacy in dom start that humble shop grew into what's now the oldest farmer

company in the world and three hundred fifty years later still run by the founding merck family but now the company as a global player. now has annual sales of more than fifteen billion euros last year's profit was two point six billion and they employ around fifty two thousand people the company now has several divisions mix pharmaceutical sector is under a lot of pressure to research and develop their own drugs and bring them to market that includes drugs for cancer and multiple sclerosis they also make lab equipment which is a steady business their third division is making liquid crystals for l.c.d. screens and in that field they're up against fierce competition from china. we are joined by stefan chief executive how important is the u.s.
3:23 pm
market for you currently and i concerned that off the german cost companies like yours the fund and cell phone trumps tariffed list. the u.s. market is very important for us especially in the field of from a suit because also life signs and electronic materials we actually have as many employees in the u.s. as we have in germany a lot of research and development as well as manufacturing in the u.s. i also think that our products are very important to make the u.s. by taking this tree and the u.s. electronics industry competitive so yes there is some concern about changes in the global trade system but be believe that we as a company are somewhat less exposed than others. what do you do if if donald trump decides to put companies like yours on his tariff is what how are you going to respond to that. well as i said we manufacture
3:24 pm
a lot of products in the u.s. especially for life life science good so researchers biotech companies almost anywhere in the world including the u.s. depend on having access access to our products and actually being manufactured manufactured in the in the u.s. so we've looked at what kind of exposure we every might have we think that in our case it is limited. is you're increasing your deeds in in china is that also part of the struck such a g to town any kind of isolationism tendencies that are coming out of washington. well something like fifty percent of our company's growth in the next couple of years depends on china and chinese economy is transforming rapidly china's becoming one of the most innovative and digitalized societies on this planet and the chinese government and their strategy made in china twenty twenty five that put
3:25 pm
a lot of emphasis on innovation in the country as as we in our business model the support of the companies including chinese chinese company. in the future by you take a look tronics or health it's only natural that we invest in this area in china. mark has undergone a massive restructuring why has it restructured itself and how. well you know the market is changing very very fast perceive that these these markets and retrieve work the electronics industry research by it take industry the pharmaceutical industry is changing very fast science is is changing rapidly so a company that has a history of three hundred fifty used could only have such a long history because it was continuously changing adapting well actually being head of the curve when it comes to scientific development so we re change our company we change our portfolio we've moved a lot of people to like forty billion when it comes to our businesses and that is
3:26 pm
a tradition we have to be we have a long tradition of changing. stephanos and that she does if that's all max thank you very much. thank you. now it's just eight months left it's still unclear how brags it will actually play out one of the key issues is immigration which britain wants to control much tighter as a result e.u. immigration to britain has already fallen to a five year low and if you're on the strawberry business without migrant workers from the continent you will be in trouble because brits love their strawberries but they don't like to pick them. british strawberries from kent with lots of cream and getting the fruit to the bowl takes a lot of work and since the brags that decision there's been a lack of strawberry pickers from europe. strawberries. i want my strawberries. we'll find some someone will find them and i'll help myself
3:27 pm
out i'll pick them. the strawberries are delivered in crates from the strawberry fields in the southern english county. david figure this is a fruit grower the fourth generation a family business more and more of his fruit is rotting in the fields the pickers who work for him for years just stop showing up. not just do we want labor from europe but we want to be at a trade with europe we buy they stroll revamps came from belgium the worst came to the us we went to growing fruit and. i know of more than one farmer who has started growing fruit abroad the industry suffers for that labor from eastern europe ninety nine percent of the pickers in britain come from there according to the farmers association and they can't find british people who are willing or thousands of workers down in these critical weeks they don't know if they'll be welcome after
3:28 pm
brags that and the pound has also dropped over privacy which makes fruit picking elsewhere in europe more attractive i have all the time here so i'm still happy here so when i will not be happy we're just going to replace foreign workers leaving the u.k. is not only a problem in agriculture hundreds of thousands of jobs are under threat at companies like rolls royce jaguar airbus and siemens and so our entire industrial sectors like steel. eighty percent of those exports go to the e.u. market so for us we absolutely need for the very survival of the steel said in the u.k. seamless trade with terrorists with no end in sight for the u.k. trade deal many sectors have a long road of economic instability ahead of them. thought drums foreign trade. he seems to follow no strategy except maybe this make america great again but how do you actually achieve thoughts floods for example and lots of them
3:29 pm
that's why trump is ramping up the production of flags for his reelection campaign in two years and that will surely provide a boost for the american companies making all these flags you might think well think again the g.m. how flag company and china's on the province is busy despite the trade war between their country in the us it's all about supply and demand and business is booming here even with all the buy american rhetoric at home the trump campaign has their reelection flags made right here in this factory geo how produces around ten thousand trump twenty twenty flanks per month factory workers here hope the new tariffs won't affect production. that run our lives. and tariffs ordinary people like us won't have any profit margin. it will be taken by the state . of course we hope it doesn't happen if they add more tariffs sales will gradually
3:30 pm
decrease a little the sales will drop on some flags if they get too expensive so we hope that doesn't happen. before long. but for now business is still booming with republicans in the us curing up for donald trump's reelection campaign by churning out thousands of american flags and reelection banners the trump family has been criticized for having their company's products produced in china despite trump's insistence that americans buy american made products. business our top story sumi that's right here her we're going to go right back to health thank you i believe we have some live pictures if we can pull those in now of that summit that's taking place between donald trump and vladimir putin and it seems like we don't have those pictures at the moment let's see if we can pull them up so we don't have those pictures but that will be continuing to cover that summit get hard as those.
