like if they no longer have the security guarantee of the u.s. what does this realignment this readjusting look like well one of the big questions is for example in how far paragraph five off the nato atlantic. treaty is still in effect and in this respect we have a little bit of a reality check because when we had the attacks of september eleventh nato was listen it was a big blow to you know the real meaning off you know what they stand for and still knowing that this article might not have. not have the same meaning to trump as it had before to all the other u.s. presidents is something the europeans have to think about and all of the not not to members also have to keep in mind so they have to be more more. more reflective with respect what is the long term strategy of nato but also how much money are they are willing to put into their own defense not
4:01 pm
a lot of fundamental questions underpinning the summit of course for europe and for the u.s. nicole which is going to remind our viewers now what our top story is u.s. president donald trump has been meeting behind closed doors with russia's vladimir putin in the finnish capital helsinki the first ever official summit between the pair now the one on one talks with only trump and putin lasted for over two hours as we said longer than what was scheduled trump is a lunch with the russian delegation trump describing those talks with putin as a good start trump said he was hopeful of forging a better time for putting the two leaders due to give a joint press conference shortly and we will of course be covering that press conference live as soon as the two leaders appear and a cold what do you make so far of the symbolism that we see of these two leaders and sitting together what kind of message do you think they're trying to send well one of the things trump really wanted to do is to meet putin at some point people. one. or what his fascination with putin is sent putin has this
4:02 pm
interest in meeting you know leda all you know of the united states because it brings him back to the world for the to stable and this is something put in bt urgently needs his economy is not doing well he's up isolated many issues this respect to his security but he's also an important player in solving a lot of the international conflicts we see at this point for example in syria so we have an interest in germany too to see that the two of them meet and most you know wishful thinking is that they they find constructive solutions that are in the interest of for example europe but also the transatlantic relationship which would mean for example looking at and you started off talking about non proliferation as first step all right well let's bring in our correspondents again now from moscow in washington to talk more about this i think emily sure when and alexandra for naaman are standing by for us let's see if we can bring you both very that you both
4:03 pm
are good to see you again so we've been talking with nicole here about the long list of issues that the leaders may or may not talk about one of them nuclear nonproliferation how did those of these two leaders stand on this and will this be brought up but i'm let's start with you. well i think that both leaders will be looking for a common ground this is obviously just a first meeting. in perhaps what the russian side is hoping will be a string of meetings so i think they're both they're both sides are kind of looking for concrete takeaways that they could come out of the meeting with and i think that. certainly for the russian side nuclear non political prisoner for ration excuse me would be one concrete takeaway that certainly seems likely there's this new start treaty which at the moment runs until twenty twenty one and they could
4:04 pm
agree for example on extending that there is the possibility of extending that for five years and that would certainly be in russia's interest we'll have to wait and see whether it's in in the u.s. interest as well. as come to you know because we've again heard mixed messages from donald trump on where he stands on nuclear arms we've heard them say that they should be eliminated but also brag about the u.s. arsenal where do you think he's going to stand in meeting with vladimir putin talking about this issue today. well actually i think that it's nuclear arms control is something that both sides could really agree on. of a correspondent in moscow said emily said that that's something that has been discussed here as well the expansion of the new start treaty strategic arms reduction treaty that would be in the interest of both countries and it's something that we are hearing. can only also imagine to do to extend this treaty however we
4:05 pm
have to say that this treaty were signed by his predecessor president obama and that's something that we know that it's not very comfortable with extending treaties signed by his predecessors and he also one set that it was a very bad deal for the united states however experts here said that he might not have known what he was talking about so from the white house we're hearing that indeed nuclear arms control can be here on the agenda right a possible war a concrete outcome there i'm not sure when and moscow and alexander phenomena in washington will be coming back to you before but later for now the let's go back together hard european european powers appealing to global powers to walk back their trade conflict that's right the european union has asked united states china and russia to ease global trade tensions saying there is a danger they could spiral out of control european council president donald to
4:06 pm
schools speaking in speaking in beijing today at the opening of a summit between china and the european union comes at a time when both the u.s. china find themselves targeted by u.s. troops as part of washington's american first policy. it's trade tensions continue to flare elsewhere there are signs that the economic relationship between the e.u. and china remain stable the two sides say they're close to reaching a bilateral investment agreement that commitment comes as fears grow over the impact of america's unpredictability to the. europe china and the. american president trump and russian president putin has seen. we are all over the fact. the architecture of the world is changing before the railroads. and the common response of.
4:07 pm
change. to. china and the e.u. also signed their first joint declaration since twenty fifteen the document mentions the need to address overcapacity on the global steel markets officials also discuss plans to reform world trade organization rules this on the same day that china filed a w t o challenge to u.s. tariffs on chinese goods. to june china and the e.u. are willing to talk about reforming and improving the w t o on the basis that it maintains its core principles and continues to operate based on rules that foster free trade. changes. while china continues to post strong growth there are fears that a further escalation in its trade right with the united states could slow down the economy the latest figures show the chinese g.d.p. grew six point seven percent in the second quarter that's slightly less than in the previous three months the e.u.
4:08 pm
is a key trading partner for china and its relationships our elsewhere beijing is especially keen to maintain core deal trade ties with the bloc. financial correspondent for asia joins us now from singapore has just called the e.u. a full on trade is now the time for europe and china to strengthen economic ties. are you scared it would be a good time for china to pacify the trade pact with the e.u. particularly after multiple rounds of complaints from european companies of china's unfriendliness when it comes to setting up shop in european countries so right now the ball truly is in china's court when it comes to a widening its street gates perhaps this could be the push that they will need to finally make that happen just briefly how much does the trade dispute with the u.s. . china does stand to lose a good portion of their heavily reliant export market with many consumer goods
4:09 pm
assembled and we shipped out of china. to the u.s. so the terrorists will actually hurt the us more when it when china passes on those price hikes and to hang in singapore there for us thank you german pharmaceuticals and technology company mac is stepping up its presence in china a company as science deals with ali baba health open a technology center in shanghai under tung g. university in shanghai to its global network of genome editing researches and will open a two hundred fifty million euro factory in non tongue next year all these moves the company's three hundred fiftieth anniversary this year. it all started here with a pharmacy in dom start that humble shop grew into what's now the oldest from a company in the world and three hundred fifty years later still run by the
4:10 pm
founding merck family but now the company as a global player. now has annual sales of more than fifteen billion euros last year's profit was two point six billion and they employ around fifty two thousand people. the company now has several divisions mix pharmaceutical sector is under a lot of pressure to research and develop their own drugs and bring them to market that includes drugs for cancer and multiple sclerosis they also make lab equipment which is a steady business their third division is making liquid crystals for l.c.d. screens and in that field they're up against fierce competition from china. we are joined by stefan mac's chief executive how important is the u.s. market for you currently and i concern that off the german cars companies like yours for fun and selves on trump's tariffed list. the u.s.
4:11 pm
market is very important for us especially in the field of from a suit because also life signs and electronic materials we actually have as many employees in the u.s. as we have in germany a lot of research and development as well as manufacturing in the u.s. i also think that our products are very important to make the u.s. by taking this tree and the u.s. electronics industry competitive so yes there is some concern about changes in the global trade system could be believed that we as a company are somewhat less exposed in others. what can you do if if donald trump decides to put companies like yours on his tariff is what are you going to respond to that. well as i said we manufacture a lot of products in the u.s. especially for life life science crude so researchers biotech companies almost anywhere in the world including the u.s.
4:12 pm
depend on having access access to our products and they're actually being manufactured manufactured in the in the u.s. so we've looked at what kind of exposure here every might have we think that in our case it is limited. is you're increasing your activities in in china is that also part of the start subsidy to counter any kind of isolationism tendencies that are coming out of washington. well something like fifty percent of our company's growth in the next couple of years depends on china and chinese economy it's transforming rapidly china is becoming one of the most innovative and digitalized societies on this planet and the chinese government and their strategy made in china twenty twenty five that put a lot of emphasis on innovation in the country as as we in our business model we support other companies including chinese chinese company. in the field of buy you
4:13 pm
take a look tronics or health it's only natural that we invest in this area in china. mark has undergone a massive restructuring why has it restructured itself and how. well you know the market is changing very very fast p.c. that these things serve markets in retreat work the electronics industry research by a take industry the pharmaceutical industry changing very fast sciences is changing rapidly so a company that has a history of three hundred fifty used could only have such a long history because it was continuously changing adapting actually being head of the curve when it comes to scientific development so we re change our company we changed our portfolio we moved a lot of people to like forty billion when it comes to our businesses and that is a tradition we really appreciate we have a long tradition of changing. stephanos and that she'd executive office max thank
4:14 pm
you very much. oh it's just about eight months left it's still unclear how bragg's it will actually play out one of the key issues is immigration which britain wants to control tightly as a result e.u. immigration to britain has fallen to a five year low already and if you're in the strawberry business without migrant workers from the continent you will be in trouble because brits love their stories but they don't like to pick them. british strawberries from kent with lots of cream and getting the fruit to the bowl takes a lot of work and since the brags that decision there's been a lack of strawberry pickers from europe. i want my strawberries. we'll find some someone will find them and i'll help myself out i'll pick them. the strawberries are delivered in crates from the strawberry fields in the southern english county. david figure this is
4:15 pm
a fruit grower the fourth generation of family business more and more of his fruit is rotting in the field of farmers association and they can't find british people who are willing for thousands of workers down in these critical weeks they don't know if they'll be welcome after bragg's it and the pound has also dropped over privacy which makes fruit picking elsewhere in europe more attractive i have a long time here so i'm still happy here so when i will not be hip i was just going other place foreign workers leaving the u.k. is not only a problem in agriculture hundreds of thousands of jobs are under threat at companies like rolls royce jaguar air bus and siemens and so our entire industrial sectors like steel. eighty percent of those exports go to the e.u. market so for us we absolutely need for the very survival of the steel said to the u.k. seamless trade with terrorists with no end in sight for the u.k.
4:16 pm
trade deal many sectors have a long road of economic instability ahead of them. donald trump's trade policy seems to follow no strategy except maybe this making america great again but how do you actually achieve that well with phlox for example and lots of the us by trump is ramping up the production of flags for his reelection campaign in two years' time that will surely provide a boost for the american companies making all these flags you might think well again. how flag company in china is on the province he's busy despite the trade war between their country in the. u.s. it's all about supply and demand and business is booming here even with all the buy american rhetoric at home the trump campaign has their reelection flags made right here in this factory geo how produces around ten thousand trump twenty twenty flags per month factory workers here hope the new tariffs won't affect production. that
4:17 pm
daniella. that and tariffs ordinary people like us won't have any profit margin. it will be taken by the state. of course we hope it doesn't happen and if they add more tariffs sales will gradually decrease a little the sales will drop on some flags if they get too expensive so we hope that doesn't happen. before long. but for now business is still booming with republicans in the us curing up for donald trump's reelection campaign by churning out thousands of american flags and reelection banners to trump family has been criticized for having their company's products produced in china despite trump's insistence that americans buy american made products. well that's all your business news it's back to some you know thank you care hard let's return now to our top story u.s. president donald trump holding an historic summit with russian president vladimir
4:18 pm
putin in helsinki this is what's happening right now this is where we're expecting both leaders to hold a press conference shortly see the media starting to fill in we are awaiting us for the two leaders to come out they held a one on one meeting that went around two hours far longer than expected and that then they were holding a meeting with both of their advisers the teams that they brought along with them when they finish that they will then speak to the press we're waiting for that but as the talks kicked off tom said he was hopeful of forging better ties with putin and they have several thorny issues they have to talk through including the conflicts in ukraine and syria and of course the charges of russian meddling in the u.s. presidential election we'll see what they have made of those issues when they come out to speak to the press will be covering that live as soon as we see the two leaders appear there in helsinki. for now though let's turn to the championship match of the soccer world cup which france won last night after a hard fought win over croatia millions of french soccer fans are on top of the world after celebrating their team's victory through the night and
4:19 pm
a surprising number of croatian fans are also celebrating their team's extraordinary performance in the tournament. the sea of love now the city of joy paris eros to france is when in most of the thousands of the seaborn funds park the french capital. dancing in the streets and shouting from the rooftops. this is great everyone is here together and it's a good atmosphere and makes everyone feel better and we're happy to be here and try to be french knows us and move honestly we've been feeling french for three days now and we'd like it to remain show of course and we are proud of france and the guys from the suburbs have done it for france the goal accounting really showed. only we're proud thank you. one fan in particular
4:20 pm
couldn't contain his excitement french president and manuel mccall watching the much in moscow he even got a pass on the head from his croatian counterparts president kalinda come back a top of its thrilled with the team second place. fans in croatia's capital zagreb shares the sentiment with disappointment quickly giving way to pride. in his i will cap i think they showed a fighting spirit they showed us a beautiful game you know we're happy despite the defeat it's still a victory for us to come in the top of. the price. in paris it's euphoria victory try em. and we have nick mckenna quine back with us from did a few sports heinecke so incredible scenes from both countries and a lot of people been talk about the fact that this french team was very multi-cultural what is a stick remains for the country it's a big thing it's
4:21 pm
a big city is the next leader of the sea however. because together because it's always the people who live in the body you essentially are different class they have that treated differently and not consider friends are always considered often considered immigrants although they've been born in the country they have french possible it's eighty percent of this team have migration background there are people who have some amazing last night so for three days now i felt like a french woman and that's kind of strange if you live in the country and don't feel at home there you don't feel welcome that that leaves you worked on so what sports and football in this particular case can do is it can it can gel people together bring people together it happened as well in one thousand nine hundred eight so i think i'm hoping that it bodes well for so it's brought france together what about for the croatians because they're still celebrating despite the fact that they lost why is that because they're a tiny tiny team tiny country compared to say france for many people in creation that's a slightly bigger than what we have here in berlin and they made is the world cup final that doesn't happen very often and the fact that they managed to do that was
4:22 pm
incredible they fought their way through this tournament they fought so hard in the knockout stages and we'll see how they made it siestas final. an early and one chris month free kick made its way past the croatian keeper but it was a croatian head that nodded in mario monti to catch with an unlucky own goal to give france the lead. but the croatian comeback kings hit back in the twenty eighth minute to even pettish it but shortly after he went from hero to zero as a video review showed him handling the ball in the croatian penalty area perhaps a harsh decision but nonetheless neatly tucked away by anton greaseman for his fourth goal of the tournament. in the second half france extended their lead through paul pogba. a long range effort chucked into the corner. chilean and bok they repeated the trick again beating daniel from far out for one france then took their foot off the gas pedal. men who could chase down
4:23 pm
a back pass for hugo lloris and connected an embarrassing mistake but the french captain did the front for a long four to the final score they blew win the world cup for a second time with smiles all around. but important to note that croatia they finished runners up but the fans still have plenty of reason to celebrate and we have our correspondent melanie credible there in zagreb this is what she told us a little bit earlier. you know i have been talking to so many fans here and they have been here from the very early hours of that team to riot and they have all told me that they believe that this is just the beginning that that team has a really bright pizza head of them that will be so much more from them especially in the next world cup and i mean with these crowds here waiting for them they just and they have one now but they'll be here soon i can imagine they soorley will have a great time tonight and surely as a team in the future as well in here to tonga. do you think friends were the
4:24 pm
deserved champions for croatia played really well christian for a very hot as tournament france ultimately were the better team france had bit of wobbly stars that's one of the first group stages once exactly didn't student have champions written all over them it was as it was in there was a knockout stage where they really doesn't play well when they when they beat argentina four three your quads you know last week they beat belgium one in the semifinals and they've they've come together so well this year they have very good individual players we saw one report on to increase one is going to go all the back pay paul all go scores all fantastic individual players that are playing themselves they're playing for france and that's been the most important factor in france reaching the final and ultimately winning their second world cup title actually we're just seeing here this breaking news that it will going to be received a little known which is one of the high school winning this tournament though we did see a very excited. braiding the french teams win there in russia yesterday but this is the second world cup title as you said are there any parallels between that first world cup title when and this team that world cup title in one sense take has set
4:25 pm
off a precedent in the last twenty years they reach five title finals they have the world cup and ninety eight european finals in two thousand well cup here in berlin in two thousand and six and of course the year is two years ago in front with a loss to portugal they've had a good generation of players it starts off with the additional who is now the manager of the team let's have a different see how that will pan out. i it's been twenty years since france tasted world cup glory certain d.d.a. de sean was among the illustrious class of ninety eight they sure has coach les blue for the last six years in the former midfielder has brought in a new generation scandal and attitude free that wasn't the case with former squads that clashed with predisposes such as raymond domenech in twenty ten the france that has gone all the way in russia has been a highly disciplined unit with team success the ultimate goal players have been keen to make up for losing the euro twenty sixteen final on home turf.
4:26 pm
i know the taste of defeat in a final it's really not good very bitter our member that to fate and it's really not good not approach this final like the euro's. after winning group c. in and spectacular fashion france progressed efficiently through the knockout stage of voiding extra time in all three matches their players always working tirelessly in service of the team. d.d.a. dijon has been able to choose from an incredible wealth of talent his squad is not only the most valuable in money terms it's also the second youngest at the russia world cup with paul pogba somewhat empty and kilian and bumpy among six regulars who are twenty five years of age or under the future is bright for this france team as for d.d.a. deja he now becomes only the third person ever to win the world cup as
4:27 pm
a player and coach following in the footsteps of brazil's mario's i garlow and germany's front beckoned. so next six regulars at the age of twenty five or under i mean what is next for france is a scary thought for any team is going to face. as a bird same vlan how they've played together played as a unit if they keep this unit together they keep play at the level they're playing out now in the future so far as they. years in two years they could definitely when they got the world cup in four years' time a foreign office on course because it's november this is the team which are probably golden generation again same as the ninety eight team went on to win the u.s. and the same thing could happen with the side as well they've got such potential they've got such a good chance of actually winning more trophies it's going to be really interesting to watch all right the future looks bright for france and nick mechanic line from debut sports thank you so much for joining us well it's been thirty two days thirty two nations taking part in sixty four world cup games and now the tournament is over for another four years let's take a step back and spend
4:28 pm
4:31 pm
the highs and lows of the two thousand and eighteen world cup all culminating in the final and after last night's game there was a lot going on in social media we have our social media editor call us one with us and carl of the friends players they had their sons out they were filming tells you what you have that feeling even in the radio that was a crazy celebration on the field actually a crazier though after they went down into the locker rooms and with social media we can take you there and you can see just how crazy the celebration really got including the french president emmanuel mccrone apparently he was getting some dance lessons from the french players learning how to dab we missed that one but we
4:32 pm
can go to the post match press conference not. typical press conference i don't think any questions actually being asked at this present second youngest teams we've heard of loss of energy going to france even the police had a hard time holding back their emotions celebrating on the highway then today in paris the metro renaming six stations temporarily to honor the blue the goalkeeper laureus and the head coach getting their own stops there in paris and this is my favorite sumi even the mona lisa apparently is a fan of the team she has her jersey on correctly with the two stars to represent the two titles you know fans in france they partied all into the night there's just images of videos all over the place in social media unfortunately some violence some sporadic arrests happening mostly a fun night peace peaceful night crazy time for fans and friends what about croatia fans because we have our correspondent there and they've been celebrating as well it's almost like they won and the passion even for a second place finish they are loving their team really supporting their team but
4:33 pm
interestingly on social media the big star for racial wasn't a fan it was actually the president herself and take a look at this many saying that she actually won the tournaments is of course kalinda grab our kids are over many really just loving her for a down to earth style celebrating in the stands with fans she didn't miss the miss i think one match and this woman on social media calling her my new role model she really did make quite an impression as a decoration team a lot of fun stuff on social media as the world cup is over or no what we're going to watch now right well is it ended on a very positive note there are social media editor of us and carl thank you very much. all right let's return now to our top story about historic summit taking place between the russian president and the u.s. president donald trump in helsinki here again these pictures this is a press conference we're awaiting the two leaders are expected to come out shortly and speak to the press about their meeting now their one on one meeting without any
4:34 pm
of their advisers that took about two hours longer than expected as we said they then held a nother meeting with their advisers their teams and they have now been meeting and are expected to come out shortly and assholes talks kicked off we heard donald trump say that he wanted to see better ties with. and also saying the time it arrived for serious talks about bilateral relations a lot of very thorny issues between these two sides we don't know exactly what they discussed but we're hoping to shed some more light on that as soon as they come to talk to the press will be listening him live it to that press conference as soon as it begins. terry give us an idea of what's been happening anything coming out of these needing. nothing yet a lot of journalists asking each other did you hear anything did you hear anything we're all on the edge of our seats here in helsinki but not only in helsinki also in brussels as we heard earlier from michael my colleague your mouth as they are
4:35 pm
very nervous there about about what might have been decided in this meeting between presidents trump and putin as you know a day ago president trump called the european union a photo and then he says he wants extraordinary relations with russia so of course european leaders chancellor merkel among them she has been the target of much of president trump's criticism he has said that germany should not be buying gas from russia while the u.s. in his words defends germany inside the nato alliance also people will very much be looking to see if the president's discussed crimea that of course is the region of ukraine that president putin annexed illegally under international law president the u.s. policy is that there is no recognition of that annexation but president trump has not repeated that in questions very directly given to him at the nato summit last week and even before that he was asked about crimea and he'll say and he said we'll
4:36 pm
just have to see what president putin and i discuss about that that makes a lot of people nervous because of course if he gives an ok to land grabs against international law the baltic states members of the european union and nato are nervous will they be next so it's not just those of us and in helsinki who are waiting minute by minute to see what these two presidents say it's i would guess leaders all over europe and i would i would even dare say all over the world who want to hear from them yeah i would agree with that assessment terry remind us again the significance the importance of this summit to see these two leaders a sitting down together donald trump and slaughter of putin especially given the backdrop of all of these issues that we've been talking about. it's not the first time the two met have met but it's certainly the first time they've met in such an official one on one even with extended groups of leaders this is the longest the two have met as far as we know since they've been in their current positions anyway and again all of these issues about about ukraine not just crimea but of course the
4:37 pm
continued hostilities with russian supported separatists in eastern ukraine fighting against the ukrainian government which is an ally of the united states a partner of nato all of these things are something that the united states typically traditionally what address would would state clearly to the russian president these are unacceptable president trump has not done that when invited specifically to do so he has declined to do that and when he says we'll just have to see and you're talking about a one on one meeting with no advisors president no no takers president it's no wonder people are nervous not just people in those regions but people who are depending on international law and order to keep their country safe it's not just the baltic countries it's also iceland it's also any small state which has a border with with with russia and i would say poland as well now that i think about it not a small state but many of these leaders spoke to president trump at the nato summit and urged him to come in forcefully to his meeting with president putin and stand
4:38 pm
up for international law stand up even just for u.s. policy which does not recognize the annexation of crimea which says that russia should stop supporting separatists when the president of the united states does not does not repeat his own administration's policy no one knows what to expect. definitely not a typical summit that you see between the u.s. and russia coming to you know where this germany stand on looking at the summit you know what are some of the issues that germany is really looking at very closely you know is that ukraine is that a relation is on syria a what are the biggest issues that germany is looking at here both issues are very important in ukraine certain it is the topic that is most in the minds of the german politicians because. it's it's a region which is you know very close to the european union and the recognition of international law is something that is highly important in german foreign policy serious important for domestic reasons to leave because of the high pressure off the refugee crisis we want to see a solution in syria and yes putin is
4:39 pm
a key player in the conflict and if we hope for the best and there will be something positive coming out of this meeting it will be a solution which brings us closer to you know a long long lasting peace in syria but. s.t.v. correspondence from her thinking about leap of pointed out nobody really knows what they have been discussing in the past you all us what about the point that terry just made about security in this underpinning of the security alliance between the e.u. and the u.s. you know we've just come off the back of this nato summit that has been very tumultuous between the european union and the u.s. what kind of position does that put donald trump in as he goes into the summit by putting that said before the meeting took place that there would be a lot of much of the actual issues on the table so we also think that. the issue off ukraine will be on the agenda and also the security network
4:40 pm
will beyond it and nato will be on the agenda and. the fear coming from the nato member states that doesn't fully commit to the obligations of nato in a meeting with putin which would be a very disturbing outcome and that the you know this solidarity pect that you know is basically on the on the it's the basis of nato will be undermined i have bilateral deals might want to strike with putin in this meeting so let's take this one step further what if we're seeing the creation of a new alliance we heard donald trump pointing out ahead of the talks the one on one . talks that they have a mutual friend let me put on donald trump and that is china you know we sing the formation of a new alliance and where does europe stand in that alliance and europe stands in a very difficult position because it wants to keep good relationship to the united states it has some you know economic relations with russia and china is getting
4:41 pm
more and more important not only for the german economy but for the economy at large so being in the middle of all of this europe has to really think about what's the position would be when the outcomes of this meetings might be more byler agreements which are not in the interests of the european union and as you've been speaking just remind our viewers were a looking at pictures there on the right hand of your screen of the scene where that press conference is set to take place you see the media gathered there a we are still waiting for the two leaders to come out and we will listen in to them as soon as they do but as we as we wait for them let's continue to talk about the summit and call because there are so many issues as we said that are on the table in particular we look at how the european union rather has continued to put pressure on russia because of its annexation of crimea with the with the sank the sanctions regime that the european union and the u.s. have been behind what what would happen to that pressure if the u.s. no longer stands behind it right it will be a very difficult position for european union to be in because only with the. with
4:42 pm
the pressure of the united states such you know such a situation for ukraine is sustainable and if this pressure is not you know we're not be exercised in the future it would send a terrible signal to all the other bordering states what might happen to them if russia expense its territory to that territory you know who's there to help and who said to protect them and that's one of the fears a country like poland the baltic states constantly to kill aid and this is why they are so very interested in having the often mentioned by the u.s. government that they would be on their side weaved. talk a lot about the series of concern specially from the european perspective of what could possibly go wrong for the european union in the summit what about the possible you know what are some of the positive outcomes we could see for the e.u. here well if these two leaders meet i mean it means a lot and they can they can really influence geopolitics in
4:43 pm
a major way so one of the expectations would have to be that they. start negotiations on. liberation of nuclear weapons which would be a very important signal to the bird if they are winning you know to reduce the number of nuclear weapons to have. another contract on the table and not have another agreement on the table is the start. of declaration they are also a lot of people expect that maybe something is happening on this contract and so if they would be willing to renew promises to you know size down their weapons it would be a very positive outcome and this is what a lot of analysts and politicians expect at this point but again we don't know if they were deliver you know a lot of analysts saying that might be one piece of common ground that could come out of the summit but let's stay with this topic of nuclear proliferation or do you proliferate nonproliferation rather you know there are
4:44 pm
a lot of questions being asked about whether the u.s. president should press russia about possibly violating this cold war era treated that they have to reduce their nuclear stockpiles do you think that we would actually see the u.s. president i mean what's in his interest there to press letterman on this one of one of the things that we should keep in mind is that the reduction of weapons in in russia would also mean a reduction of weapons in the united states. so i'm not sure if tom is willing at this point to really go down this road or if he more likely looks for cream and to you know to do something positive for the u.s. . to me and maybe he shies away from you know reducing weapons not only in russia but also in the united states we haven't talked much yet about the conflict in syria what role this summit could have been for them gaffer to find a solution to peace there what do you expect to come out here you know we're not
4:45 pm
expecting concrete concrete outcome but could this summit help towards finding a solution the summit cooked help to find a solution only if the two leaders and willing to rethink their role in the region because at this point the u.s. administration has been attacking. interventional has been carrying out intervention in syria to the dismay of russia and russia is continuing to support the assad regime so if one of the this one of the positive outcomes would be that a some all it greed to find a peaceful solution for the region then the open question remains what will happen to assad and for a long time the us government said it might be no future in syria with assad while the us is taking. russia takes a very different role there has been discussion about the role of assad even in the u.s. but still there has been a good. fully constructive plan you know what the future of syria might look like
4:46 pm
and here they could you know at least start to negotiate like how the supposed conflict peace situation in syria looks like some very serious security and geo political issues on the table as you're saying nicole let's go back to emily sure win in moscow so we also have oleksandr phenomena with us from washington and i want to start with you because we saw donald trump tweet earlier today before the summit got under way our relationship with russia has never been worse thanks to many years of u.s. foolishness and stupidity and now the rig which talking about the investigation in the us into allegedly our russian meddling in the us elections there from moscow's perspective how low are relations between these two countries. well sumi i'd just like to mention you just mentioned that tweet that tweet one hundred percent plays into the russian narrative they've always said that you know
4:47 pm
russia wants good relations with the u.s. and the fact that the us president himself is saying that it's actually u.s. foolishness over the years that has led to a deterioration in relations is of course playing into the russian narrative the russian foreign ministry even liked that tweet and when we talk about expectations here on the russian side i think that in a sense the stakes you know aren't that high the fact that that putin is even going to be sitting at a table with trump is something that is very much in russia's interest they don't necessarily need that many concrete outcomes they aren't under pressure here at home domestically this is definitely going to be seen as a victory even to just be meeting. with trump so really this for the russian side is a victory already you know emily we saw in russia a lot of hope after donald trump election in two thousand and sixteen that
4:48 pm
relations between these two countries would be restored especially because we heard from donald trump often that that was his goal yet since then not much has happened on that front is there real hope that this summit could go a long way in doing so. well that's an interesting question because i think from the very pretty much from the very beginning there's been this kind of disconnect between how the russians feel about trump and how the russians feel about trump's administration so when trump was first elected people as you say were very much hopeful that things could change but then they soon saw that actually his administration was still as they see it here and the russian there were these new sanctions there was the u.s. national security policy which was published last year which kind of very much positioned russia and china against the u.s. as adversaries and that was kind of
4:49 pm
a moment where the russians kind of seem to have lost hope but this meeting now with donald trump this personal meeting between the two leaders is likely to restore some hope that perhaps there is a way out of what people here are calling the dead and in u.s. russian relations perhaps this could restart dialogue that's certainly what people here are hoping that's the hope emily but coming to you alexander this comes against the backdrop of what we know happened on friday which is that a twelve for the russian intelligence officials were indicted in relation to the probe into the u.s. elections and tell us more about that back up and what kind of pressure that's putting the u.s. president under. i think that's many experts here in the united states but also lawmakers from the democratic party but also from and among republicans expect presidents trump now ready to address this issue and to confront putin on that and particularly taking into account what happened last week when
4:50 pm
twelve russian military intelligence agents were indicted here in the united states for interfering in the u.s. presidential elections in two thousand election in twenty sixteen and that would mean that we are not talking about some russians trying to into europe but russian states having tried to interfere allegedly in the u.s. election so that's a whole different thing right now so many experts here extend expect trouble and want to try to address this issue and not behind closed doors we don't know wherever those leaders putin and have talked about it during their one on one meeting but people in the united states as i said expect the president to address this issue in front of the world standing side by side with the russian president during their joint press conference the cold what about here in europe is that expectation there as well because we have to say that you know russia has also been
4:51 pm
accused of interfering in elections here in europe as well. it would be touch i'm afraid this is such a hot potato which makes the two of them uncomfortable then i'm not sure if this is really something they want to present especially not when they meet the journalists i think the meeting may need focus on producing positive picture from a constructive meeting and this issue is sold difficult and so howley contentious for both also them that my suspicion would be they would not touch it at this point but what do you think the u.s. expects there is some sort of answer. well they need both the u.s. public and the public if they want this to be solved they want to know what is really happening on what was happening behind the scenes and how much is russia involved in russia involved in the election campaign so even if.
4:52 pm
he were the most likely to repeat what he said before that russia has absolutely nothing to do with is and then you know trump can can go out and say even the president confirmed that he has nothing to do with this hoping that the issue will be off the table center coming back to you know because we've been watching the summit and we should just remind our viewers that this picture on the right hand side of the screen is this press conference we're waiting to see that get under way between the two leaders they've been meeting now for more than two hours the two of them together and then have their us teams together meeting as well but alexander coming back to you in washington you know you council president donald tusk has urged trump and putin not to destroy this global order is something we've been talking about with nicole here as well this question of this global order is that something that donald trump is you know is this a strategy from donald trump or is this merely focused on this meeting between him and of let me put in. well that's
4:53 pm
a very interesting question and a question that it's really difficult to be uncertain right now because we still don't know what the business leaders were talking bowed to during their private one on one meeting and that is actually something that costs that has cost a lot of concerns here in the united states many experts are warning it's war can be said or what was said in this one on one were only interpreters were present a we know that president has a rubber transactional approach towards foreign pola see that when he talks about free press when he talks about she's you were allies or even nato some of these of pinions are quite similar awards we would expect presidents the russian president to talk about this when he talks about his topics so many experts here are really very concerned about this one on one meeting and i can also add to that.
4:54 pm
apparently important for the u.s. presidents to have one on one meeting he was still one we are hearing he really wanted to have it because he wanted to have time alone to assess the russian president he didn't want any details of this conversation to leak and he also. apparently didn't want he's a who are trying to push him towards a more critical more hard tough stance on russia to undercut him in his meeting emily that brings me to you in moscow because a lot of questions being asked about you know this personal bond or possible personal bond that could develop between donald trump and blood and we've heard nicole also say that you know trump is fascinated perhaps by putin and vice versa you know how did these two leaders go into this meeting together from vladimir
4:55 pm
putin's perspective. well i think that judging from the body language today it was actually interesting to see that both leaders to me looked really rather nervous including bloody near putin he was only responding to smiles whenever trump smiled he would respond with a smile otherwise they looked very serious even a little bit tense you could see putin kind of almost gripping his chair i thought that was interesting i mean there you know this is an important meeting for both sides and the eyes of the world are on both leaders now i just want to come back to the point that you were discussing about the world order because i think it's important or interesting to point out that on the one hand you know for vladimir putin. trumps kind of disruptive power in the world is also something that is unpredictable he also wants strong partners you know the european union germany france the u.s.
4:56 pm
but of course for years now the russian narrative has been kind of that there is no longer you know just one strong power in the world this western bloc the u.s. the e.u. but they've been very much arguing that we are already living in a multi-polar world that's the term that they use and in a way disruptive power on the world stage if you can call it that is kind of playing into that narrative that people don't know what to expect from trump anymore and perhaps that's also going to mean that russia is seen as a more reliable partner than the u.s. in the long term nicole do you agree with i can see you shaking your head or are we living already in a multi-polar world and is that a good thing. strongly believe in a good post world war two order which means you strengthen much mental institutions to compromise on certain issues and you find a try to find
4:57 pm
a good solution for very complex questions so what you see right now is something i think you're absolutely right it's an inherently new situation where you called your longstanding allies foes and when you meet with the lido if a country which has a very tiny economy when you compare it with the year which you know russia has at this point so yes we see a shift of power here on the other hand i'm not sure what will come out of this new model we have seeing which is now being created all right reminder of the story that we're covering for our viewers who might just be joining us that we are covering this historic summit with donald trump and vladimir putin they have been meeting behind closed doors we are waiting for a press conference between the two to get ready we're getting ready for that right there that is the picture that you see there on the right hand side of your screen let's go to our correspondents for an update we have
4:58 pm
a terrible for us in helsinki and care about this is covering the angle from brussels for us terry let's start with you bring us up today on what has been happening and what we can expect to take place in the coming hour. the two leaders have yet to emerge for the press conference though we keep getting these tweets saying oh it's about to happen it's about to happen it's going to happen in ten minutes at the top of the hour we just don't know their unpredictability extends even to the point of ending their meetings but i think that what's happening at this moment is certainly more reassuring that one than what went on earlier in the day when the two leaders met completely alone except for their interpreters everyone wondering what kind of deals could be made and we keep talking about what will be on the table but i know that many people were looking for what would be taken off the table and that is for the baltic states they would have liked president trump to say he absolutely will not cancel nato exercises up in the baltic states he was asked directly about this at the nato summit last week and he didn't come he didn't commit that he would keep those
4:59 pm
exercises on that something they very much would like him to to stand up and be you know one hundred percent certain about the other thing he said is that we'll wait and see what we discuss about crimea of course crimea should be a non-negotiable issue the u.s. position the international position is that crimea was an illegal an exception from ukraine and no one is recognizing that so the things that are on the table which are you know one thing that we're speculating about what president trump will stand up against is another thing that people would very much like to know i spoke with a finnish on a list from the finnish institute of foreign affairs charlie salome's pasternak and he said that what's shocking to him here in finland is that for the first time ever the u.s. and russian presidents have similar goals that is to destabilize nato to destabilize the european union and in his assessment president putin must be quite pleased right now gary that brings us right to you if that's one of the goals to disable is
