didn't he didn't commit that he would keep those exercises on that's something they very much would like him to to stand up and be you know one hundred percent certain about the other thing he said is that we'll wait and see what we discuss about crimea of course crimea should be a non-negotiable issue the u.s. position the international position is that crimea was an illegal an exception from ukraine and that no one is recognizing that so the things that are on the table what are you know one thing that we're speculating about what president trump will stand up against is another thing that people would very much like to know i spoke with a finnish an a-list from the finnish institute of foreign affairs charlie salome's pasternak and he said that what's shocking to him here in finland is that for the first time ever the u.s. and russian presidents have similar goals that is to destabilize nato to destabilize the european union and in his assessment president putin must be quite pleased right now gary that brings us right to you if that's one of the goals to

disable is that european union what are people saying there. terry has just outlined is really is really of the major concern in all of this a rock solid positions in foreign policy that have united the united states and the european union thus far are put into question and that is really a major concern that is why the german foreign minister today said we may have to readjust to reorganize that relationship on the other hand some people here in brussels have said look let's let's take a look at the advantages because when the foreign minister means readjust the relationship he means investing more into the european union strengthening this clump of twenty eight or maybe in the future after bracks it's a twenty seven member states we have seen a push for the defense union within this club of the european union as some of say have given if you want to credit the drums position america first that now the
5:02 pm
european union now is the time where the european union should come together strengthen their positions make more when it comes to defense without creating a parallel structure to nato but just think about the fact that it is not a given that the united states will always be on their side right so those are some of the fears and concerns that we hear in brussels here in germany as well but terry you know going into this summit today we did see that both leaders seem to be playing down expectations a lot what do you make of that. well they certainly wore it weren't going to promise us in advance that they would address some of the issues the rest of the world wants them to address like we said crimea destabilization in eastern ukraine election interference very much on the mind of the american public and of course the democrats in congress there were calls for president president trump to completely cancel this meeting after the indictments of twelve russian agents who were found to have directly colluded directly interfered with the u.s.
5:03 pm
elections president trump wasn't hearing of it so yes there are a lot of issues that people would have liked to hear president trump say look here are positions i'm going to negotiate with president putin about having a better relationship a more constructive relationship but i am not giving ground on these red lines in u.s. foreign policy never mind nato foreign policy never mind what's good for the european union he did not even commit to u.s. foreign policy and i think that that's something that has everyone worried perhaps even those people in president trump's own administration depending on what he says today they're going to have to walk out of this room and somehow make it all sound coherent and i'm not sure how that's that's that's not an easy job we've heard the state department reaffirming the u.s. position on crimea that it was an illegal an exception even as the president of the united states refuses to do so himself when directly asked nicholas come back to you know as we're waiting for this press conference to get under way we heard terry so say that you talked to an expert an analyst there said you know this is
5:04 pm
something very significant to see the u.s. and russian leaders coming together at a summit and they actually agree on most most things and we should also see you say that the u.s. president of course have held that historic summit with kim jong il with north korea what do you make of all of this is this just talk or is this really a realignment that we're talking about oh well you know politics is all it's about symbols and about power and develop pictures and emote treaties and here we saw a few strange things happening you know and a u.s. president seems to be closer to the north korean leader than tool. it's european allies must be something getting the european media's pretty nervous. we saw at the not to summit at the end of the day trump signed the treaty and he was behind the treaty and he called nato a very strong instrument but yes he has been vague when it came to promises what will come out of the meeting with putin so again it's a complete it will be a surprise what will come out of this two hours of talk but my suspicion is that
5:05 pm
this point we see a lot of things that were you know when they took it as a given also in europe when it came to security. and a question now and it is indeed a time where europe has to try to consolidate itself to put more money into their own defense and to really think about how to deal with the situation which is fundamentally new so another push for europe to to work together more closely garrett if i can bring you back and our correspondent in brussels if you're standing by there for us garrick i'd like to ask you about that as well because you know we're seeing here that the u.s. the e.u. rather says that it's fear is that you know some of its interests could be harmed but we've been talking to cole about some possible positive outcomes what could be positive here for the e.u. from their perspective there from brussels. what basically what's what terry mentioned also live from helsinki is this idea of a constructive conversations or
5:06 pm
a number of foreign ministers who arrived here for a meeting today in brussels said look in principle this is a positive signal we need a conversation that by the way is something the has been the german position all through the russian crisis whether it was regarding crimea or whether it was the alleged poison attack of the russian spy in the u.k. the german position has always been let's keep the channels open keep a dialogue going now having said that however the concern of course is what you have already talked about in the studio is is this global architecture what is the arena if you want how we organize the style and how when it comes to trade from the perspective of the of the european union it is the the global trade organization the world trade organization whether should take place this is put into question by trump when it comes to international relations is the united
5:07 pm
nations that has an ambivalent at least relationship to and when it comes to europe it is the european union that now has been at least when it comes to trade been described as a foe and that has at least irritated politicians over here in europe and garrick we should mention to our viewers we've been looking at those live pictures of the press conference about to get under way in appears there was a man in the crowd holding up some sort of sign he was then removed by security there there was a bit of a not a stuffer really but people standing up and watching what was happening but it does appear that man has been removed from the press conference that the media is still on hand and so we're still waiting for that to get under way and terry that brings me to you you know take us through again what's going to happen still today. the press conference is really capping off the whole day what everybody has been waiting for all day because besides some very brief and vague remarks at the
5:08 pm
beginning of their one on one meeting we have not heard from these leaders and just a note i mentioned earlier but bears repeating that one of the advantages for these leaders holding an event in finland is that the fins don't leak they are remarkably silent and they knew the two leaders knew that holding something in finland would mean that there weren't going to be any tweets by sort of palace officials or or anything like this so the first words we will hear out of these meetings are going to come from the two leaders themselves and going into the meeting as we have discussed they did not give us any idea of specific positions not even very specific topics although president trump perhaps surprisingly said that he wanted to discuss nuclear weapons that he thought it was a negative force that the u.s. and russia commanded in his words ninety percent of the world's nuclear arsenal and he'd like to change that so that was more specific than he was on any other topics certainly on the issues that europe nato the e.u. would like to see him address and that is holding the the international position on
5:09 pm
the illegal onix ation of crimea telling russia to obey the minsk documents and to get its troops get its support out of eastern ukraine and let the ukrainian government try to amend its own country that has been a very destabilizing issue something very important to the european union let's mention that germany and france are guarantors of those minsk agreements in which in which the russian backed separatists and the ukrainian government were supposed to make peace there's a hot war in eastern ukraine and we don't talk about that nearly enough i don't can't even imagine whether the two presidents are going to talk about that because of course president putin will not be the first one to bring that up and what people are very worried about is that president trump in trying to walk out of this meeting and say he's had a success and that he's going to improve relations with russia could give something away and we don't know what that something could be perhaps you could say. all right i won't hold exercises in the baltics with nato as he did in north korea called off exercises surprising his own military surprising his south korean allies
5:10 pm
the europeans are wondering if something that's important to them is going to be given away in this meeting so that president trump can walk out and say relations are going to improve and and you know i have i have succeeded in mending things with with president putin yeah that certainly terry why so many people in brussels and of course in kiev are watching this meeting and so closely waiting as we are for this press conference to get under way we see that room still filling up with more aides and media nicola i want to come back to this point that terry's just making you know this is a possibility that europeans fear that there could be some concessions made what about for russia we've been talking about this with our you know our correspondent moscow as well amalie is this really the victory for russia and for bloody mary putin that donald trump has come to the summit that they're sitting down together that they have this very public handshake in front of all the cameras and certainly something which will make president putin look very good because for a long period of time he has been on his his team has been lobbying for for meeting
5:11 pm
with the president all right and nicole i'm going to cut you off here because it looks like the two leaders have just arrived ludmer putin and donald trump let's listen in to this press conference. moving images that i would think you've been i think is sort of what. we're hearing that has been because you and you mr president when we just put them in gentlemen. did you get would be easier because you can assure you that the negotiations please mr trump president of the usa have taken place in a very open transparent. constructive atmosphere they've it. looks on to current states and to perspectives a russian american relations key issues of international political political relevance for looks. it is quite clear that we are undergoing a difficult phase in our relations. the difficulties we have have led to
5:12 pm
a difficult atmosphere but they are not objective frissons for that because the long the cold war is long over. and we have no ideological confrontation anymore that's a matter of the past and the dissipation the voters change just shows the us russia . confronted with a completely new challenges. the dangerous international security. situation regional crisis and also the proliferation of the threat of terrorism. and you probably transnational crime we also have for global economic problems ecological problems and other ones it is only possible to come to terms with these challenges if we get together. and we have found the same opinion. expressed by american colleagues
5:13 pm
today how we have said we would like me to come to terms with i was going to negative situation in international relations are now a bilateral relations but we'd like to take the first steps in order to return to the cooperation that we used to have of the mantra you know regarding your questions of mutual interests we specially handled nuclear dangers now we have a special responsibility to meet with for the international security and that is why it is important to renew it's the really shocking city chiggers weapons and that is the question of usually issuing a vision. to be used especially as a nuclear state is. especially the response of international security we are with them we have none. and we have said you just necessary to come to terms and really develop an eighteen. dialogue regarding the can.
5:14 pm
because some amends and we have come up with a number of concrete proposals as far as is concerned we consider it necessary to work together. to discuss all union dues the war stricken weapon and that it has something to do also with the nonproliferation trainees. pretty regular member in. the united states and we have also. it was machine you talked. to give us a ploy mon of weapons in space shuttle genius of the region we would like to continue our ration guarding cyber security and combating international terrorism and let me also say that our intelligence services has special services
5:15 pm
work together quite successfully for instance they have worked together with international american experts. as you during the football world cup that has been finished yesterday and we would like to strengthen this cooperation and develop a system for such cooperation and first of all we'd like to set up a common work going group or regarding terrorism. and of course we have had negotiations that showed we do have different interests but we have also quite a few things we share and we need to find these points of common interests and work together literally and internationally and here i am also talking about recent crisis. for instance in syria. as far as serious concerns we need to work towards three stablish ing peace and that. could be an example for our

fruitful cooperation russia and the united states to.
