7:01 pm
on little rock thanks so much for your company everyone u.s. president donald trump has held his first ever summit with his russian counterpart vladimir putin at talks in the finnish capital helsinki the pair promised to improve relations between their two nations despite a number of thorny issues that includes allegations russia meddled in the twenty sixteen u.s. election although putin denied any russian interference while the pair also discussed nuclear stocks syria and all trump hailed the day's talks as a success and promised war dialogue would follow. this was a very constructive day this was a very constructive few hours that we spent together. it's in the interest of both of our countries to continue our conversation and we have agreed to do so i'm sure we'll be meeting again in the future often. and hopefully we will so every one of the problems that we discussed today. thank you very much.
7:02 pm
all right and they shook hands so let's go straight to helsinki our correspondent gary schultz has been covering this the history making summit terry. well a helicopter just passed overhead which i believe is accompanying the motorcade of at least one of the leaders heading back to the airport and i can tell you that i believe finland is probably breathing a sigh of relief to see these two go on their way i know that the press corps here is you know has their heads down and and writing stories about this rather remarkable summit if there was a lot of pressure a lot of tension and we didn't know exactly what was going to happen again these are two very unpredictable leaders so the mood here was one of apprehension of uncertainty if your political leaders whose whose fates may be on the line here and i think that summing it up it was indeed surprising terry in terms of substance how
7:03 pm
substantive was this summit. it depends on the topic i mean on the subject of election meddling they spoke a great deal about it with the president from saying things that i can tell from reactions were quite shocking to people he simply accepted president putin's claim that he had nothing to do with the election meddling he president trump turned it back again on the hillary on hillary clinton and the democratic national committee saying that they got hacked i think people are very surprised to hear that very surprised to see the lack of support from president trump for the intelligence community and the claims that are being made in the united states on issues that are very important to the europeans crimea on ukraine president trump did not speak about crimea did not reiterate u.s. policy that crimea is an exception by russia was illegal in fact it was only president putin who spoke about that saying that. referendum was held in crimea and
7:04 pm
they decided to join the russian federation and president tom didn't put up any protest for that so i think that europeans think it maybe it could have been worse they were expecting maybe more lambasted from the podium and there wasn't a whole lot of that so i mean on the whole perhaps europe is a bit relieved that it didn't hear more of the same kind of things that were said at the nato summit last week let's talk a little bit more about that terry you know i mean this summit that has come so close is coming out the back of a bruising couple of days for america's european allies you have been braided triumphant undermined as well at times did you get the impression after this presser that president putin is now kind of gaining the upper hand. well if not gaining i would say that he perhaps already has the upper hand it seems very much to be trump conciliatory towards putin's positions again as i'm as i
7:05 pm
mentioned before the president simply accepting putin's insistence that he had nothing to do with russian election meddling when of course all the u.s. intelligence agencies have found the opposite i think that would be very disturbing for people also the fact that president truck didn't proactively mention issues that are in the u.s. interest issues issues like ukraine you know the us is at the moment providing defensive weapons to the government of ukraine yet you didn't hear anything coming from president trump about ukraine being an ally of the united states you didn't hear him mention the european union in any positive light and a day ago he called the european union a photo and and said that russia was merely a competitor he mentioned that again saying russia is a competitor and he views that as a positive tone so i think that. most reactions that i've seen coming out of analysts are that president trump basically gave in to president putin and that putin walks away with a stronger hand for sure teri schultz reporting from house sinky thank you for your
7:06 pm
continued coverage all right let's get you the perspective now from moscow and washington we have at least sure when in the russian capital and alexander for north america burch is standing by in washington d.c. alex i want to go to you first if i mean we often describe events as historic but what did we just witness to seventy two hours after the american department of justice accused russia of cruelly acting against its very democratic process the president standing next to russia and calling for closer cooperation. well i think what we have just witnessed to something that has not served the u.s. interest and that is being disquietude by many of us many analysts. and to start being just let's take one main issue here russian meddling in the you asked presidential election the russian president president was able to stand next to
7:07 pm
donald trump and once again to deny any involvement and the russian interference in the electoral process although all the you asked intelligence agencies say that they are convinced that that was the case and the you as president did nothing to contradict the russian president instead he thought of trashed his own intelligence agencies saying and suggesting that he would believe putin that he would have to see more evidence that he would like to see did the and see. and even then i ask whoever he thinks that there is anything to russia should be held accountable for he said that those country are to be blamed so these are very remote or were very remarkable remarks half mad here in the u.s.
7:08 pm
asked with a lot of criticism in the extraordinary chain of events that we've been witnessing and we want to go to you in a moscow if there was that admission by president putin literally saying i wanted him to win referring to president from he's not beating around the bush era but also vehemently denying russian interference in the president elect let's play that for you and get your reaction right after. but once again. i'm going to mention the issue of the so-called interference of russia with the american elections and i have to read or eight. of the things i said several times including to go there so you can just look at the russians as never interferes and is not going to interfere into internal american affairs including you know what should be roses uli is the family there sticking with their script well absolutely i think that it when it comes to russian meddling this was
7:09 pm
a win for vladimir putin on the one hand you have this very strong denial we just heard his words there that he got to reiterate the strong denial say that there was no proof and just rumors that that there had been russian meddling in the u.s. election but there was also this kind of almost boisterous tone lately you mentioned that he said that he wanted trump to when he said that there was a preferred candidate in this two thousand and sixteen election and he also said that people should never believe anyone so there's almost this boisterous side to his responses there and also it was a big win because. putin basically got trump to agree. to to discuss that they would discuss creating a working group on cybersecurity in the future trump called that an incredible offer so on the one hand he's denying these hacking accusations and also agreeing
7:10 pm
to work more closely with the u.s. in the sphere of cyber security that certainly is a win for russia there are it's also extraordinary want to put the next question to you both alexander to you first if i may what will this summit be remembered for. well i think that from the u.s. perspective it's very likely that this summit can be remembered as saying to starving summit some commentators here. that it was the summit of the u.s. sitting u.s. president. to the russian president when we just looked to the first reactions after this summit with republican senators criticizing the u.s. president sent out a flake for example said that it was very shameful for war that he saw in helsinki another senator who is not always very critical of the president senator graham said that it was a missed opportunity that it was
7:11 pm
a sign of weakness all right now let's get the russian perspective from amalie what will they remember this summer for. i think from the russian point of view earlier on before this meeting there was always this disconnect between the way the russians saw trump's behavior and almost trumps friendship towards russia and also the and then the way they saw the trump administration acting towards russia you know hitting the country with sanctions. publishing a national security policy where russia is placed as the adversary as an adversary of the u.s. and this will be seen i think as a turning point you know where trump really has declared what the path is going forward this is certainly was a success from the russian point of view they the stakes were low going into this meeting even just having a meeting would have been good but now they've come out with trump not even mentioning ukraine not even met even mentioning the the illegal anik sation of
7:12 pm
crimea which is one of the main bones of contention between the west and russia and also pushing for more cooperation on syria so i think from the russian point of view this is certainly a turning point and certainly will be seen as a big success emily sure when reporting from moscow and alexander phenomena america bureau chief reporting from washington d.c. thank you both for you continue to bridge. all right want to bring up to speed now with some of the other stories making news around the world. eritrea has reopened its embassy in ethiopia in a further sign of fine relations between the two neighbors ethiopia is their prime minister of the almond and eritreans president and i say it's a flare kenya attended the reopening ceremony in a just a bomb on the move comes a week after the leaders declared an end to a two decade long conflict. to reporters for me in march
