well you. visited only news live from a u.s. president who trusts russia for his own intelligence services donald trump takes vladimir putin's word on election meddling. president putin he just said it's not russian i will say this i don't see any reason why it would be. somebody for you so much of it that broke with convention in more ways than one will bring you details from our correspondents around the. also of the program a hero's welcome for france's world cup champions the victorious team arrived at

the famous jewel room a trophy and i think three right down the shoals in these hundreds of thousands of fans have packed into central park just to greet and celebrate. i'm phil gal welcome to the program well president from past triggered a storm of controversy in the united states after openly favoring a brushing president vladimir putin over his own intelligence agencies the two presidents held their first ever summits today in helsinki just days after the u.s. indicted twelve russian agents during the twenty sixteen election during the press conference that followed the main thing mr putin did nine russia had meddled in that election it's a trump follow this up by saying he saw no reason for russia to meddle in the directly contradicts the findings of u.s. intelligence agencies. so i have great confidence in my intelligence people but
9:02 pm
i will tell you that president putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today and what he did is that incredible offer he offered to have the people working on the case come and work with their investigators with respect to the twelve people i think that's an incredible of thank you. because voluntary shoals has been covering up a summit welcome terry so the u.s. president siding with president putin over his intelligence services was not unexpected. it's hard to know what was expected between these two leaders they don't follow any script with president trump especially he seems to get off on tangents as he did at this press conference i frankly was surprised that european issues that nato issues did not play a bigger role in the press conference there really was primarily focused at least from president trump side on these issues of collusion and of course on hillary
9:03 pm
clinton's campaign against him i expected him to reprise some of the the lines that we heard in brussels and in in the u.k. earlier you know about how bad germany's defense spending was how the european union was bad for the united states and and those those lines would have pleased president putin as well but i'm sure he's not disappointed with how things turned out with president trump completely discounting his own intelligence agencies and siding with president putin saying i'll take him at his word let's take a look at the crisis in syria. is a complex one. cooperation between our two countries has the potential to save. hundreds of thousands of lives i also made clear that the united states will not allow iran to benefit from our successful campaign against isis we have just about eradicated isis. so a terrorist summit improves the chances of great soko russian.
9:04 pm
well whether cooperation will be improved depends on what goal you're looking at those snippets that president trump was talking about in syria we have no idea what the plan would be for the u.s. and russia to cooperate i mean the only outcome the rest of the world would support in syria is that there's peace that that russia stops supporting syrian president assad and his bombing campaigns against his own people so i don't think that's what president trump had in mind when he talked about cooperation i spoke with a finnish analyst about this summit and. he said that the goals of the two leaders unfortunately have convened in that the u.s. and that the u.s. and russia are both interested in destabilizing the european union and nato we we've lost our connection we've lost ok looks like we are not. in helsinki thank you. more than on today's historic

meeting with erica sholay who's a senior advisor for the security and defense policy at the german marshall fund of the united states. welcome to g.w. before today's meeting president trump tweeted that relations with russia have never been worse and he blamed many years of u.s. foolishness and stupidity said. the rigged witch hunts dissing your own country seems like an odd way to start negotiations with a country that so many in the international community distrust. this is an extraordinary moment for the united states and for the transatlantic community if you reflect on the last five days it's been an unblemished win for vladimir putin from the nato summit which was a tempestuous and divisive two terms visit to london where he talked about a hard breck said which would only weaken the e.u. two just yesterday in an interview calling the european union a trade photo of the united states to his tweet this morning in his press
9:06 pm
conference this afternoon it's almost been stripped and by vladimir putin playing exactly to his core interests of dividing the us from europe weakening nato and having the u.s. president cast doubt on his own intelligence community's conclusion about russians meddling in the u.s. twenty six you know washington it just seems extraordinary so they're all where does this confluence of interest come from one can only guess i mean president trump for years has talked about his desire to be close to russia he of course had many business dealings with russia the kinds of things that robert muller the investor in the united states is looking into one can only speculate at this point about what trumps motives are he clearly has a personal fascination with putin and perhaps he's somewhat envious of an authoritarian dictator like putin but this is deeply troubling to united states and its partners around the world so you talk about about the president. actions over the last weeks and months are playing games of the the russian scheme of things. of
9:07 pm
course vladimir putin is very much looking to reassert russia's place in the world and again today's meeting seems to slot into that strategy nicely absolutely even the venue helsinki the finns are fine hosts but helsinki evokes the memories of the cold war and the superpower summits and what's surprising to me is how devoid of substance this summit seems to have been the result was nothing agreed to it was very ill prepared on the front end and of course the only news out of it is. president trump has refused to acknowledge yet again publicly this time in front of the russian president i watched this and i listened to it i made notes. i was looking for substance and there was some talk of there was some talk of a cyber cooperation and a committee to look at our shared interests but they all not nothing but then would
9:08 pm
you expect anything substantial from a meeting that where they had sat in private well typically when leaders get together there are within the government you call deliverables there are grievance that have been prepared ahead of time that they will announce there is nothing agreed to here except for an agreement to talk more among bureaucrats. so i'm i'm somewhat surprised by that of course we were also concerned that there could perhaps be agreements that would run counter to u.s. interests or counter to nato has interests on for example lifting sanctions against russia or. choosing to pull u.s. troops or some u.s. troops out of europe or not do military exercises the kinds of things that he did after his meeting with kim jong un in north korea thankfully with us we didn't see that and that that's i guess one glimmer of good news out of this but i think what was shocking to everyone in washington and i really throughout many parts of europe today is the fact that the president still to this moment will not concede that russia interfered in the twenty sixteen election that his own intelligence
9:09 pm
community unanimously agrees i'd be interested in your reaction to another tweet this time from former cia director john brennan in it he says donald trump's press conference before was in helsinki rises to and exceeds the threshold of high crimes and misdemeanors it was nothing short of treasonous but any which is coming in the civic he's wholly in the pocket of putin to make of the. he's to work with john brennan in the white house he's one of most honorable public servants i know he's worked for republicans and democrats he's as knowledgeable as any one of the threats the united states in the west faces today and for him to say these words i think we should all take very very seriously just three days ago the united states justice department donald trump's own justice department indicted twelve russians for interfering in the twenty sixteen presidential election to try to undermine american democracy for the president ited states to stand up today and raise
9:10 pm
questions about that say that he believes lattimer putin more than the u.s. intelligence community i think is treasonous so given what you said about this meeting and president trumps actions appearance of work within a russian strategy russia to one side do you think that there is any country that watch this press conference that has besides russia that has any cause to be pleased or indeed to be worried. what came out of it why there's plenty of countries who are going to be quite worried i think think many many u.s. partners here in europe that are very worried by what they saw i can't think that there are many leaders in eastern europe in the baltics or poland certainly the leaders of ukraine's leaders here in germany france italy any one's going to be happy with what they heard from donald trump you could see that perhaps some countries do not wish the united states well are pleased by what they saw china for example the more that the united states is mired in this political scandal and wrapped around the axle of of donald trump the better for china so it's hard to see
