but she's no more than woman got some close to. life and death with the cure starch july twenty first on w. . news. this is you know we news live from berlin several people are injured in a knife attack on a german bus police say an assailant eight people on a bus in the northern city of lubec several of them are seriously hurt the suspect is in police custody we'll get you the latest. also on the show german chance on american signs off for the summer at her pre-holiday press conference merkel says
6:01 pm
her government must strike a delicate balance on the hot button issue of migration. plus the european union gives a good and welcome to britain's latest white paper on leaving the bloc negotiating we should value says the plan could allow for progress in the bog down talks and sweden struggles to contain dozens of wildfires the flames are forced villages across the country to be evacuated. thanks so much for joining us while we're following breaking news in northern germany where a man with a knife attacked and wounded at least eight people the attack took place on a crowded city bus in the city of newburgh police have confirmed there are no fatalities but say some of the injuries are serious police arrested
6:02 pm
a suspect they've identified as a thirty four year old german citizen let's take a listen now to whoa what lewd acts a prosecutor said to the media a year short while ago. i man have to name a man on a city bus stabbed passengers with a knife the exact number of injured is not yet known enough and if there are no fatalities from one of the injured is in serious condition one vital to the perpetrator was apprehended he's in police custody and will be questioned later in the act and put in the right or circumstances of the crime are unclear and on the identity of the suspect has not yet been verified so i cannot provide any further information. so that prosecutor speaking there earlier today we corresponded to brady joins me now with an update kate so we just heard from the prosecutor in the city of there because they have a suspect in custody she just confirmed that do we know at this time of us or days are searching for other suspects or does this person act alone. at the moment as
6:03 pm
we've heard from authorities so far they aren't in fact i'm investigating any further suspects and since the spokeswoman for the prosecution office gave that statement an hour or so ago we have since learned that the suspect is apparently a thirty four year old german man and as you say he has now been taken into custody and it doesn't seem that he was acting with an accomplice we all we know so far is that during the bus journey earlier this afternoon at around one thirty pm local time the suspect pulled what is report was reportedly a knife or witnesses have said was a kitchen knife from his rucksack and began to stab some of those victims and we've heard so far from police that there have been eight victims confirmed to
6:04 pm
have suffered injuries but we've also since heard from the interior minister schleswig-holstein daryn that's the state of the german state in which really bad lies that some victims actually also sustained injuries and that the bus driver for example also suffered a blow to the face and we heard from witnesses that the bus driver immediately braked and stopped the bus as soon as the incident soon as that knife attack began and immediately open the doors to enable passengers to leave as quickly as possible and kate any additional information about this a thirty four year old german male who is suspected to have perpetrated this attack or any motivation that the authorities are tracking. so far we don't know anything else except for the fact that he is in fact in his mid thirty's. and we've also since heard that a rucksack was found on the bus where this incident took place
6:05 pm
and a bomb disposal unit is now investigating of course it's not yet confirmed whether that rucksack which was left behind in fact belongs to the suspect or it could indeed have just belonged to another passenger but no motive has yet been rolled out the lubeck prosecution office has said that even a terrorist motive has not been ruled out but of course police are investigating all lines of inquiry and kate have you learned more about the people who have been injured well so far we know that thirty witnesses on now giving evidence to police we don't know specifics about the victims and of course they would be that currently receiving medical attention especially if three of the eight people who have been confirmed as have been sustained injuries. are
6:06 pm
also said to have actually suffered more serious injuries so of course it's important to note as well though that police have confirmed that there have not been any fate teletubbies in this incident. correspondent kate brady reporting thank you very much. and we say in germany we're on the america has signed off for the summer with an annual press conference in berlin speaking after a roller coaster start of or forced the term medical deny rumors that she might step down before the end of the current parliament while she also talk old some of the major issues confronting her fragile coalition government not least how to deal with donald trump's america and how to solve your migration courses. i'm going to michael set aside one and a half hours to talk with the media before her official summer holidays began it's been
6:07 pm
a turbulent political year for the chancellor and many have wondered whether it would spell her downfall but of merkel was in some need of a holiday it didn't show many of the questions posed by the press centered on donald trump and whether america could understand why he singled out germany for criticism. i took note it. i didn't look for motivating factors. macko said she would rather deal with the issue rationally. trans outrage at germany's trade surplus with the us soley concerned trade in goods she said. you know if we add services to that and the profits transferred back to the us when you look at the trade balance then it looks quite different. then you see there is a balance and that it's slightly tipped in favor of the us. michael went on to say that in the future europe will not be able to rely on the u.s.
6:08 pm
to be the world's peacekeeper she said that was legitimate and that europe had to solve its own regional conflicts including military wants the chancellor also said she had no problem with trump meeting with president putin and russia has been under international sanctions sense of a mixed crimea in two thousand and fourteen. if in. i think it has to become normal again for u.s. presidents to meet with russian presidents. after all ninety percent of the world's nuclear arsenal is held by these two countries. on migration merkel said she remains concerned about how the issue has divided europe. this is. it's quite obvious that this puts europe under a lot of pressure. the fact this issue affects every e.u. member state means of course that it will take longer to solve this it shows how
6:09 pm
divided we are over the issue. but i believe finding a common solution for migration is crucial to the future of the european union. not only in europe in recent weeks migration policy has exposed to visions that threaten to break apart her governing coalition. but at friday's press conference she showed no sign of being troubled missing only that she looked forward to a few days' rest. you're watching the news or so have a lot more to tell you about including there sweden's biggest wildfires in decades and now other european countries are sending help to combat that well have we won in a report coming up but first let's return to the chasseur on america and what she had to say about a brewing trade faceoff with the u.s. guard as she reiterated that the e.u. is determined to counter any u.s. tariffs and a further escalation of the trade was started by u.s.
6:10 pm
president paul trump the situation she said is very serious. told reporters in berlin today. we don't just have cars being exported from germany or europe to the u.s. but also some four hundred thousand cars that are made in the united states and exported to the rest of the world. but. the biggest b.m.w. plant isn't in germany but in spartanburg south carolina i know. this idea of interconnection was also mentioned at the hearing in washington in washington. and that's why we see these tariffs or potential tariffs as an infringement of w t o rules as well as a threat to prosperity for many people in the world to feel that. well the u.s. car industry is not the only sector being hit by president trump's trade policies
6:11 pm
will tell you it's already turbos the e.u. has put on american products came into effect at the start of the month for jack daniels the united states biggest whiskey exporter it may mean hiking prices in europe and bracing for the worst are washington correspondent claire richardson went to lynchburg tennessee to get a taste of the problem. american whiskey in the firing line now that the european union has hit back against president donald trump with tariffs of its own companies like jack daniels are being forced to make sacrifices that could hurt their bottom line. i here and then for a tennessee home to jack daniels whiskey it's worth a night they said they plan to increase their prices some ten percent model for consumers and here you and they're worried that people are choosing what they think will forego the expense of american products and simply take the. tennessee strongly back to trump in the two thousand and sixteen elections that's likely the
6:12 pm
reason distilleries here are feeling the brunt of europe's response as brussels turns up the pressure on places the republican party needs to win in the upcoming midterm elections. now the few hundred residents of lynchburg have found themselves in the center of an international trade dispute. if the terrible situation is going to bag. over all the bottom dollar of jack daniels getting their product to anywhere outside of tennessee or outside of the united states would be and that would raise their cost. and eventually could affect lynchburg. where the biggest fear is what unhappy customers in europe would mean for jobs here in tennessee. frankly it probably will be. them having to pass that cost on to the consumer so. poor people in germany would have paid more for.
6:13 pm
sorry. for europeans up price bomb and for jack daniels a painful hangover from donald trump tariffs. let's bring in only boss our financial correspondent is standing by in frankfurt really not a day goes by with our you and me talking about the latest economic shenanigans the man in the white house what's the latest from today. well he says he's ready to go for five hundred and what he means by that is five hundred billion dollars five hundred billion and tariffs that he could slap on the goods coming in from china to the united states and didn't pick this number randomly in fact five hundred five billion dollars is the number that the chinese exports totaled in the year two thousand and seventeen so this is going for broke if you will it's not yet decided but he's mentioned this number and as soon as they did the markets went
6:14 pm
south the docks especially that. last quite clearly for the end of the day and especially big exporters were among the biggest losers companies like continental out of supplier or the big three car companies here in diameter b.m.w. and volkswagen but also just in crop the steel maker and auto supplier and. if you ask yourself where there's a trade conflict begin or end in a trade war starts well it's with numbers like that that you'll finally achieve a trade war if it comes to that you don't really seems to enjoy sort of influencing markets like that and nothing seems to be. in for him he boldly goes where no of the president to go before now he's criticizing his own central bank how did that go down. at that went down really badly it really affected the dollar the dollar weakened on that before the euro expressed in dollars was at around under
6:15 pm
a dollar sixteen now it's about a dollar seventeen that's a big swing in the currency markets trump was suggesting that the interest rate hikes by the fed were hard were pushing the dollar and harming the exports and that undermines the credibility the confidence in the fed and next time an interest rate decision comes around the fed won't pull any punches in order to prove that it's not listening to donald trump that it's a. it's own person if you will it's own a monetary policy person. in frankfurt that thank you very much. north korea has posted its worst economic performance in twenty years figures from south korea's central bank showed the socialist north economy contracted by three and a half percent last year when a factory and i would cultural output sign poor figures can be largely attributed to international sanctions twenty seventeen un security council ban the north main
6:16 pm
exports which include coal minerals and textiles need to keep your own accused factory employees of not working hard enough. and that's a business and back to later now with the latest state of the bags of negotiations thank you gary hart because the chief briggs a negotiator has cautiously welcome new proposals from britain on his future relationship with the e.u. we should be on the set the proposals contain quote useful elements that provide the basis for negotiations but he said there are also questions about whether some aspects are compatible with the e.u.'s basic principles while the border between northern ireland and the republic of ireland remains one of the key stumbling blocks britain's theresa may called on the e.u. today to evolve its position and strike a new deal on the issue. all right let's see how that is going down let's go to do to get mass in the british capital and marcus who is in brussels
6:17 pm
again arc i want to give you the first word if i may the e.u. is sieved the u.k. so why paper is this a blueprint that the european union can work with. i say it's a good start will it let's at least say it's a start that is how the chief price of negotiator has put it because he has been waiting for a paper like that for a long time now for all. for a year now the e.u.'s been confronted with the red lines they float all about the red lines of the u.k. but they've been waiting for concrete proposals on how to move forward and so now today you. will not discuss on the basis of this but will use it in the negotiations it is a step forward it contains as you have said some useful elements and that is why they will not shoot it down immediately seeing that's teresa mayes and difficult position and also seeing that it is a step in the right direction towards a softer brax it despite the fact that of course it includes cherrypicking and that
6:18 pm
will not fly in the. e.u. is still left with questions how was prime minister may addressing those issues. well promises reason may of course she says that she's confident that she presented a good negotiating position a good starting point she said we propose a common rule book goods not on services but i'm good and i agree culture which would mean that there is room for the u.k. to do the free trade agreement but also that there wouldn't be any frictions at the border particularly with northern ireland and the free movement of people which of course is one of the cornerstones of the you itself he says that that must end but he's also hinted that there could be some room for compromise in these that there that european citizens u.k. citizens will be able to travel easily and also do business easily across the you
6:19 pm
and also across the u.k. bridges is there room for compromise when it comes to the very contentious issue of the border between ireland and northern ireland what is to semi proposing to do about it. well that really is the most difficult. the problem really for everybody to solve tourism a says she acknowledges that it's not just the e.u. that needs to come forward but that is for both sides to find and find a common position however it is really very very tricky because such a contentious issue for northern ireland because it's really the e.u. and the belfast agreement that have guaranteed peace in northern ireland have guaranteed frictionless travel across the borders have managed for people to have multiple identities you can feel northern irish you can feel irish you can feel british and all this is now put in question to reason may says what she is proposing will enable a frictionless crossing of the borders so this is how late is this is her latest
6:20 pm
negotiating position again york that brings me to you would may's proposal potentially be a deal breaker for the. name of the austrian minister for european affair our affairs answered that question today in one single sentence when he said we need a backstop solution for northern ireland and without that solution we will have no deal and we will have no transition face put in a nutshell that is how important this question of northern ireland and ensuring that there will be no help border is for e.u. member states even the ones as far away from northern ireland as austria so everyone here is on the same page and that is why member states this week have started taking contingency ranchman's particularly the ones that are hardest hit economically so for instance island but also the netherlands who have hired an extra nine hundred customs officers each in order to prepare themselves for

learned. well so far later we just know that the suspect has indeed been taken into custody and police don't seem at the moment to be looking for anyone else and we've heard also from local media from witnesses i've spoken to local media that the suspects. the suspected attacker was in fact overpowered by other passengers on that bus when he began this attack earlier on today and began to stab several people i mean as you said has now been eight confirmed fit to him who suffered injuries and we've since heard from the interior minister. in which is the state in which lubeck lives and that some of those victims actually sustained injuries the bus driver for example reportedly suffered a blow to the face and it was
6:26 pm
a post driver in fact who put the brakes on the bus immediately after the suspected tack began earlier this afternoon and opened the door so that the passengers could leave the bus as quickly as possible and we have since heard however that a bomb disposal unit was actually investigating a backpack which was left behind on the bus of course it's not yet known whether that belonged to the suspect or whether it was in fact just a belonging left behind by another passenger as they fled the bus kid any additional information that has been released by authorities on the suspect or possible motive. well all we know so far is that he is a thirty four year old man with german citizenship but there are some reports going round on various different. media outlets that the man was originally
6:27 pm
from iran but also authorities have not yet confirmed that information and we also still don't know the motive behind this now the prosecution office in lubec has said that they have no evidence at the moment to suggest that there was any political radicalization of the suspect is what they said but at the same time there is absolutely no motive that is being ruled out at the moment and they still could be still looking at that down any line of inquiry at the moment kate brady reporting thank you very much we'll check in with you in our next border. you've been watching the news we'll have an update of the headlines for you at the top of the hour for now thank you for spending time with us.
