away from good of you sports for more on this story with us here in the studio tom what does this mean for the future of the german team and young players who like you still say they have two hearts beating for two countries well it's hard not to see this really as a huge blow for sport as a model of integration do this as it would have been the poster boy for football you know for integration in sport he was he was one of the first generation of players with nationality to choose germany. previously had been the no particularly for players with turkish and germans but nationalities to choose to. and only chose germany but was a huge part of their recent success he was massive in there winning a world cup campaign in two thousand and fourteen he had been voted his german player of the year five year is out of six not only because he really had been in the success story for integration in sport. a brilliant example for german sought
8:09 am
you know an example of german society's capacity to integrate people of other nationalities and different heritage. and it's incredibly damning for german society and of course actually for german football that a grassroots and a national and at the highest level that you know this has been the end of his career in the national scene and he hasn't been the only person speaking out has he no i mean that if he has also faced so that's the german football association has also faced criticism from other people phillip lawn the captain of the two thousand and fourteen world cup side has written an open letter criticizing coach you akim lives chinese style columns woman to go one of the bosses a munich has also. said this functionaries that the d.f.t. have been behaving like a much as. however has also been very sing quite of criticism his self now in these statements in which he announced that he was going to step back from the german national team he actually began with a defense of his photo with russia tired. but again which

a lot of people i think perhaps justifiably have been seeing is a little bit naive he said he would take the photo again it's the first time a long time after the photo came out that he's broken his silence he said that it wasn't a political act some fortunately i don't really think. he seems to realize that taking a photo with an autocratic leader of a cum country that had you know until very recently been a liberal democracy and is now being transformed into something quite radically in scale really different is the political and he said that he you know he's only paying respect for the office and not for the incumbent i don't really think those things can be separated neither do a lot of other people. we have had a chance perhaps for a real debate about this and a real reckoning unfortunately the tone as deteriorated and it's a story and an all round while the tajiks are fortunate time tonight from sports with us here in our studio tom thank you very much. all right returning now to our top story that we're following here on d w dozens of people have been killed by

articles written in a very balanced manner to speak for it there's going to be trouble brewing somewhere down the line previously like i said there were there were certain areas you can speak about but it was never about political parties not to do things stand you just kind of reporter the balance mother and here you're out there at it there after you know this was really startling to many of the editors but but then of carrying on so of course some of us are really really struggling. many of her colleagues have received intimidating calls and threats on social media and journalists know all too well which stories editors want to afraid to run but on the record few dead to point their finger. well. i'll take the safest route out of this. human rights international human

system alphabet says it will appeal. well in times of uncertainty people like to hold the gold it's the reliable crisis currency or at least it was because despite of the threat of a global trade war volatile stock markets and the growing worries about the stability of the global economic system gold has been tumbling in recent months but analysts expect the metal to bounce back again eventually it's a spectacular find this gilded silver death mask has the archaeology world abuzz the rare and ancient artifact was discovered last week in excavations in egypt on the face of a mummy the mask is clearly worth far more than the gold and silver it's made of both these precious metals have recently slipped in market value the price of gold has plunged it's dropped over six percent since the start of the year causing

much head scratching usually in uncertain times like these gold is seen as a safe haven. there are currently fears of a trade war between the us china and the european union for example. the banking debt and euro crisis also continues to reverberate. and the consequences of britain's decision to leave the e.u. remain unclear. so why isn't the price of gold rising rather than falling many analysts have a simple explanation gold isn't being used as a crisis proof investment because there are many other alternatives. in the u.s. the economy is booming the u.s. federal reserve has indicated that it's not planning to hike interest rates any further for fear of in danger in growth so investors are pinning their hopes on the u.s. stock market big corn is also in demand while some skeptics see buying and selling

the cryptocurrency is gambling and not investing is advocates view it as an alternative to gold most analysts are nevertheless convinced in the long term goal will not lose its sheen despite the apparent alternatives currently on offer it will continue to fascinate people in the future just as it did back in the age of the pharaohs. or i for some expert analysis on the gold price i'm joined by james hughes chief market analyst ed x. a trader in london good to have you with us and basically picking up right from the very last sentence in our report has gold lost its sheen at least for investors. well i think it's not necessarily a case of losing it shane but i think as your package just said there are other alternatives and what we see this time in this almost in this these trade wars and all of these geopolitical stories that we're seeing we're seeing it's the u.s.

dollar which is really taking taking all of that safe haven invest the money away from gold and if you think go days pay it against the u.s. dollar so often you see it's are the one or the other the tends to move to the upside or the gold goes up or the dollar goes up but it has been very much the u.s. dollar which is really taken the focus and if you think about why that is of course we have trade wars really when you look at trade wars we have tit for tat tariffs been being levied by both sides so there isn't too many winners or losers within big economies but it's the consumer that tends to lose and when that is the case investors look for dollar denominated debt and of course the u.s. dollar is the biggest safe haven when it comes to dollar denominated debt so really it's the money is within the u.s. dollars rather just within the gold all right so you mentioned the u.s. dollar the greenback as the alternative to gold in times of uncertainty our report
8:25 am
also mentioned bitcoin which of those alternative investments do you think is the most promising right now. well i think in terms i think it's not necessary just looking at at promising i think it's more a case of when we say safe haven we want something that's a little bit more stable way we tend to go to these safe havens when the other more riskier assets are too volatile for us and the problem with big coin in any of the other cryptocurrency is they are incredibly volatile now that's that's fine if there are short term investments that you're looking for however when it comes to a safe haven in times of geo political turmoil and then of course we look to a long term say thought play and that safe play at the moment is most definitely the u.s. dollar rather than big corn just because there is so the economy's stable and in terms of the u.s. in general how the federal reserve is moving and how the monetary policy is going
8:26 am
it is a stable environment to be in yes done donald trump doesn't make it too stable but of course then there are changes with the economy really is the focus so the dollar is is the real major safe haven at the moment well james. would you buy gold now is now a good time to invest in gold because the prices are dropping. well of course when you look at traditional investments you would say you would buy at the low price and sell at the high price so from that from that point of view i would say that would be from a typical investment yes gold is a very low price so buying at these lower levels would be potentially positive on the upside however what i would also say is the fact that there are there is so much uncertainty from the white house there is so much uncertainty from donald trump we never know what he's going to say next who is going to target next to what the topic is the topic is going to be next and the issue that you have with that is that that can cause so much volatility within these markets all right james hughes
