block after almost twenty years of losses with profits of more than five hundred million euros p s a's restructuring plan for opel includes shedding a fifth of its former eighteen thousand staff p.s.a. also own situation and pogo its total half year profits were one point seven billion euros. lots of money and in times of uncertainty people like to hoard gold it's the reliable crisis currency or at least it was because despite the threat of a global trade war gold has been tumbling in recent months but analysts expect the metal to bounce back again eventually. it's a spectacular find this gilded silver death mask has the archaeology world abuzz the rare and ancient artifact was discovered last week in excavations in egypt on the face of a mummy. the mask is clearly worth far more than the gold and silver it's made of

both these precious metals have recently slipped in market value the price of gold has plunged it's dropped over six percent since the start of the year causing much head scratching usually in uncertain times like these gold is seen as a safe haven there are currently fears of a trade war between the us china and the european union for example. the banking debts and euro crisis also continues to reverberate. and the consequences of britain's decision to leave the e.u. remain unclear. so why isn't the price of gold rising rather than fall and many analysts have a simple explanation gold isn't being used as a crisis proof investment because there are many other alternatives. in the u.s. the economy is booming the u.s. federal reserve has indicated that it's not planning to hike interest rates any
1:20 pm
further for fear of in danger in growth so investors are pinning their hopes on the u.s. stock market bitcoin is also in demand while some skeptics see buying and selling the cryptocurrency is gambling and not investing is advocates view it as an alternative to gold most analysts are nevertheless convinced in the long term goal will not lose it sheen despite the apparent alternatives currently on offer it will continue to fascinate people in the future just as it did back in the age of the pharaohs. well to get some expert analysis i spoke to james hughes chief market analyst at actually trade in london and i asked him whether gold has lost its sheen at least invest us. well i think it's not necessarily a case of losing its sheen but i think as your package just said there are other alternatives and what we see this time in this almost in this these trade wars and all of these geopolitical stories that we're seeing we're seeing it's the u.s.
1:21 pm
dollar which is really taking all of that safe haven investor money away from gold and if you think go he's paid against the u.s. dollar so often you see it's are the one or the other the tends to move to the upside or the gold goes up or the dollar goes up but it has been very much the u.s. dollar which is really taken the focus and if you think about why that is of course we have trade wars really when you look at trade wars we have tit for tat tariffs been being levied by both sides so there isn't too many winners or losers within big economies but it's the consumer that tends to lose and when that is the case investors look for dollar denominated debt and of course the u.s. dollar is the biggest safe haven when it comes to dollar denominated debt so really is the money is within the u.s. dollars rather just within the gold all right so you mentioned the u.s. dollar the greenback as the alternative to gold in times of uncertainty our report
1:22 pm
also mentioned bitcoin which of those alternative investments do you think is the most promising right now. well i think in terms i think it's not necessary just looking at at promising i think it's more a case of when we say safe haven we want something that's a little bit more stable we tend to go to the safe havens when the other more riskier assets are too volatile for us and the problem with a big coin in any of the other cryptocurrency is they are incredibly volatile now that's that's fine if there are short term investments that you're looking for however when it comes to a safe haven in times of geo political turmoil and then of course we look to our long term safe play and that's safe play at the moment is most definitely the u.s. dollar rather than big corn just because there is so the economy's stable and in terms of the u.s. in general how the federal reserve is moving and how the monetary policy is going it is a stable environment to be in yes donald trump doesn't make it too stable but of
1:23 pm
course then there are changes with the economy really is the focus so the dollar is is the real major safe haven at the moment well james. would you buy gold now is now a good time to invest in gold because the prices are dropping well of course when you look at traditional investments you would say you would buy at a low price and sell at the high price so from that from that point of view i would say that would be from a typical investment yes gold is a very low price so buying at these lower levels would be potentially positive on the upside however what i would also say is the fact that there are there is so much uncertainty from the white house there is so much uncertainty from donald trump we never know what he's going to say next who he's going to target next to what the topic is the topic is going to be next and the issue that you have with that is that that can cause so much volatility within these markets right james hughes chief market analyst that actually trader in london thank you so much for

your time. seven years into germany's green energy her revolution which entails facing out nuclear power and promoting renewable energy sources thousands of wind turbines are spread across the country but they need to be replaced after ten years and disposing of old wind turbines is a big problem not only are they deeply embedded in the ground but getting rid of them releases dangerous dust now a firm here in germany has come up with a solution. these are sections of decommission turbines as a wind park in northern germany. a group of local environmentalists aren't satisfied too much of the base is still in the ground they want the whole thing to be removed. the concrete bases can be crushed and used in road construction. but the rotor blades contain bluff and carbon fiber is.
1:25 pm
burning them isn't a viable option. just think you've dust on toxic gases. and it's difficult to dispose of them. just clogs the filters full stop and carbon fibers conduct electricity and they cause short circuits and fires in the filters that's why incinerators either won't accept them or they charge exorbitant prices to dispose of them. of the thirty thousand turbines in germany a very large number are due to be decommissioned over the next few years and replaced by larger units. environmentally friendly disposal methods need to be developed before the weight of demolition gets underway. neo-con pick the company that recycles modern composite materials and there are plenty of them the bios glass and carbon fiber reinforced plastic are used not only in

grocers but also for example in airplane construction but what can you do with them once they scrapped. and you can go back. to a cake there is no technology in the world that lets you separated back into eggs baking powder flour and milk. the same applies to these materials g.r.p. and c.r.p. . their constituent parts are so tightly bound together that they can't really. separated and could move the company has developed a procedure to tackle the problem it shreds the material the resulting stuff is light and easy to humble and while it can be burned as a substitute for fossil fuels in the manufacture of cement it can also be mixed with paper production residue and turned into grania less. that granular can be used as a component of cement as

a substitute for sound. so a lot of disused brochures could well turn up in the cement in the foundations of the next generation of wind turbines. and just enough time for this impressive results for google's parent company alpha bits a second quarter earnings trounce profit estimates boosted by strong growth in its advertising business google ad revenues rose twenty four percent at a record mt trust fund from the e.u. is set to cost the internet giant billions european regulators accused google of forcing mobile device makers to take its products when using its android operating system alphabet says it will appeal. that's your business update thanks for watching.
