has crashed during takeoff in northern mexico and authorities say all one hundred three people on board survived but dozens were injured some of them seriously local authorities say a gust of wind hit the aircraft as it took all during heavy storm causing it to lose speed and hit the ground. migrants are increasingly using spain as a gateway to europe they're travelling a short distance by boat through the strait of gibraltar from morocco marcus burnish reports. rescue teams have just pulled another twenty one people from the strait of gibraltar off southern spain they consider this a slow day compared to most but these twenty one arrivals present a problem for spain the maritime rescue service wants to take these migrants to the
12:04 pm
nearest port but the port refused permission a common occurrence. over the course of the entire past year we've rescued sixteen thousand people but this year after just seven months the number has already climbed to twenty two thousand. the ship carrying the rescued migrants docked at the nearby port of august the rest instead but the situation there is no better the migrants had been stuck on the ship for days now they're on land looking for shady places to rest. a few kilometers away jose antonio gomez is waiting for the daily food delivery more than six hundred rescued people were brought to this gym just over the weekend . they called us on saturday and then the people came they were simply too many of
12:05 pm
them. local authorities are responsible for looking after those arriving at the church has prepared food volunteers are helping out but people are getting impatient. we aren't eating well we don't have a proper place to sleep. and we can't call our families to reassure them that we're still alive. spanish authorities are overwhelmed after talking to migrants it's clear that the strait of gibraltar is gaining in popularity as a crossing point. i was going from ivory coast to libya but they told me that morocco would be a better idea. refugees want to go to spain before they chose libya or italy. just thirteen kilometers lie between africa and europe at spain's southernmost tip . spain once again has become the gateway to europe for many
12:06 pm
thousands of migrants it's not the first time and there are reasons it didn't have changed much either i was morocco is busy dealing with domestic issues it can spare the energy to watch its borders it's time to make a deal again. as markets burnish their reporting while marcus is now joining us live from the port of sirius in spain marcus here at the airport where the boat with refugees that we saw in your report finally came ashore what's the situation there now. well there still people arriving there still people rescued less than last week and. those who were behind me on a rescue ship accommodated almost three hundred that's the remaining amount of
12:07 pm
people on my back who are waiting to be reallocated to improvised facilities that are at least better than here at the port the weather conditions will change during the day so the wind will be much stronger than in the last days rescue teams expect the amount of people who try to cross the strait of gibraltar will drop at least for the next days well in your report pointed out that the strait of gibraltar is now being used more and more as a crossing point for refugees why is that. what we heard it from one of the refugees i all i interviewed the libya italy route is almost closed. but the wish of the people to arrive to europe is still alive so they are just looking on the map they are asking their traffic goes where
12:08 pm
to go they point to morocco to come to spain because it is only thirteen kilometers and people tried with toy boats two to arrive to the spanish coast so it's a dramatic situation but people are desperate and they are just looking for the next exit farkas thank you so much that was correspondent marcus burnish their reporting from spain. now to a major change in germany's treatment of asylum seekers the southern state of bavaria has opened controversial rapid processing centers for migrants the so-called anchor centers are part of interior minister hall so the hope of those disputed plan to reduce the number of migrants arriving in the country the government says the center is a design to speed up asylum processing the aim is for each case to be decided within eighteen months saddam seekers whose claims are rejected would then be deported from the centers critics say concentrating so many asylum seekers in one
12:09 pm
place could hinder integration and lead to on rest. well for more on this now we're joined by our political correspondent kate brady hi kate how much of a change do these centers represent for germany's treatment of asylum seekers basically and it's important to remember fest that this is only in bavaria at the moment any asylum seeker is arriving in bavaria i'm not going to go through the entire asylum application process under one roof basically say their registration at the cation and then the final decision as to whether they'll be granted asylum or deported well. will take place under this one roof say these seven senses in bavaria have room for about fifteen hundred asylum seekers each in total and turtle and so there isn't actually any plans at the moment to push this through into any of germany's other states but there is some some interest from
12:10 pm
a couple of them but my real plans to push this through yet ok these centers as you say they're largely the idea of interior minister whole city whole fund they are only in his state of the very at this point you mentioned that so far in germany there isn't much chance of them getting getting built elsewhere what about the rest of europe as i know that when these when the idea was floated for these anchor centers as germany was calling them there was the hope that maybe the rest of europe would look at this as an example any chance of that happening exactly that has been touts it's a persons but there really is a lack of interest at the moment the e.u. still struggling to find a really united kind of measure of how to go forward with migration policy across they were union but at the moment the biggest criticism is that the senses really could hinder the integration of asylum seekers of course with the process taking sometimes up to eighteen months that could have been a year and
12:11 pm
a half well spent going to german courses or mixing mall with local german society ok we'll stay with us we're going to come back and talk about another aspect of germany's migration policy because things are changing starting today some refugees can apply to bring their immediate relatives to the country and twenty sixteen the german government suspended pamela reunification to slow down the number of migrants arriving here now it's lifted that cap we made a syrian refugee who hopes that the new ruling will reunite him with his wife and daughter. a lot more last look his wife and daughter in the eyes in august twenty fifteen. allow our is a lawyer his name is on a syrian government blacklist he had no choice but to flee. if i know my daughter but she doesn't know me she calls me uncle obama's first name . his daughter was two months old when he fled
12:12 pm
a lot more didn't realize it would be years before he would be able to see her again he wasn't able to take much with him when he left this precious photo with his daughter his wedding portrait a photo of his home village from syria he fled to turkey and from there he went by boat to greece then along the balkan route. in september twenty fifteen here in germany he has called his wife every day since they parted and every day she has sent him a picture of their daughter. he wants his wife and daughter to join him in germany but in march of twenty sixteen the german government stopped allowing refugees to bring their families into the country. oh. it's hell and it's hard to describe that your daughter is growing up without you. it's pretty painful. only those who've been through themselves know how bad it is people's
12:13 pm
families. allow or has long been waiting for the rules to change again he hopes his wife will be given an appointment at the german embassy in lebanon this month a lot where things it might help that he's attended all his german classes and integrated well. i have a great wife and my daughter can come. and that my complaint here. during the long waiting period i made a great effort to become integrated here. i worked for one year as a security guard and i believe that my family and i can become well integrated here and these are our longs to see his family again but he's worried about how much longer it might take he's waited three years and it's still unclear when they'll be reunited. or political correspondent kate brady is still with sir kate
12:14 pm
who will these revised rules on family reunification apply to this basically affects the refugees in germany who have a limited all subsidiary protections status so when you arrive in germany as an asylum seeker you really granted one of two options. the full asylum which enables you to be reunited with their family or subsidiary protection and this largely applies to asylum seekers who have fled civil war and would usually be then sent back to their home country when that civil war is over so in this case in germany this very much affects syrians living in germany at the moment so we've got a couple of big changes taking place in germany's migration policy today why is germany shaking up its migration system so much right now this is largely due to their horse in recent months he's been pushing through
12:15 pm
a strict and strict thyssen measure has he in german interior minister to really tighten germany's stance on migration policy and that's largely in response to last september's election when the conservatives and also other german pass' but largely the conservatives made huge losses in the elections to the far right and i'm anti immigrant party the alternative to germany or a.f.d. party the conservatives in germany in particular are really trying to make a push to win back those votes and at the moment that at least appears to be through making a stronger stance on migration policy but of course it is also worth remembering that the numbers of migrants asylum seekers registering in germany continue into full by the end of last year they were under two hundred thousand and they're going to continue to. thank you so much should there be a political correspondent kate brady. facebook has uncovered what it says
12:16 pm
is a coordinated campaign to influence u.s. mid-term elections in november the company says it has removed more than thirty pages it's aimed to mislead users facebook stopped short of identifying the source of the misinformation and purgatory the u.s. justice department indicted thirteen russian nationals for interfering in the twenty sixteen u.s. election. we don't want people organizations creating networks of accounts to mislead others about who they are doing. this was just part of facebook's statement as the company confirmed it had removed thirty two pages and accounts involved in coordinated in authentic behavior the social media giant said it couldn't identify who was behind the pages but officials in washington are already pointing fingers at russia because the activity reported merits russian influence campaigns on facebook during the twenty sixteen u.s.
12:17 pm
presidential election. u.s. authorities are still investigating that impact on president trump's election win but vice president mike pence is adamant the government has no tolerance for election meddling. any attempt to interfere in our elections is an affront to our democracy it will not be allowed the united states of america will not tolerate any foreign interference in our elections from any nation state not from russia china iran north korea or anyone else. this time around facebook said the pages went to much greater lengths to conceal their origins that coordinated campaign of disinformation comes just months ahead of the u.s. midterm elections. president donald trump himself has said he is very concerned that russia will be fighting very hard to have an impact on the upcoming vote facebook at mit the investigation is still in its early stages saying we don't have

all the facts. it said it may never be able to identify fish who is behind these pages and accounts. staying with the u.s. congressional elections voters in several u.s. states been choosing candidates to run in the poll in november this year there's a record number of female contenders claire richardson caught up with one holland who's also a native american. she's a single mother who once lived off food stamps now deb holland looks set to go from the banks of the rio grande day in new mexico to the halls of the house of representatives hollande is on course to become the first native american woman to serve in the u.s. congress after this year's elections and she wants to help others like her do the same as far as i'm concerned if i want native women or women of color to run to be willing to help them get out there
12:19 pm
a record number of both women and native americans are running for office across the country holland supporters want her to fight against the long history of persecution of american indians and the racism they still face today so it's a real thing it's not just a made up story it's happening all over our country as a member of the laguna pueblo tribe hall and hopes to set an example for future generations and to fight for more representation in u.s. politics when i think about you know our young native women these two beautiful young girls here who maybe in their lifetime will actually see a native woman in the congress whereas you know someone like me there was no one that i could. go to to say how did you do it and how you know how can we make this happen she's campaigning to help wrest power away from the republican controlled congress part of a wave of minority candidates who have felt insulted and marginalized by the u.s. president and who are seeking office in response to this number one question i get
12:20 pm
asked is. when you vote to impeach don't. i think. so i think if we win back the house we have an opportunity to hold the republicans feet to the fire right because we'll be in the majority. in a strongly democratic district holland is likely to beat out her challengers in november she already won her primary by running a progressive campaign focused on issues like renewable energy protections for immigrants and legalizing marijuana in these trying times for democrats she's hoping to make history and. well here in northern europe the heat wave is expected to continue in the coming weeks as the temperature soars off the scale what happens if you carry if you have to carry on working in the heat. the shop and north went to the streets of berlin. well it

12:24 pm
a majority stake in the company instead of selling to chinese firmian thai a government veto of the deal had been widely expected that was the recommendation of the german economy ministry following a months long review. only last week the german government prevented china's state grid corp from taking a twenty percent holding in electricity grid operator fifty hurts the german state don't care if w. bank bought the stake instead berlin was uneasy about handing a major chinese investor some control over the country's power grid some analysts say that hindering outside acquisitions could backfire on germany whose companies want access to chinese markets. sensitive to delegate to the top big guns so the bulk of our hope and we do our government is there to very responsible but at the same time respect that there is. sure having open markets. for having their good relations to time. the government says
12:25 pm
