processing centers for asylum seekers. and a fast way to deport those who are reject. good to have you with us tonight at least three people have died in unrest in zimbabwe just two days after a landmark election police say civilians were killed in the capital harare today as troops were deployed to quell protests riot police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse opposition supporters the main opposition party the movement for democratic change is disputing the official election results which give the ruling party a majority of seats in parliament election observers from the european union and the you. and states have called for the results of the presidential election to be

released as soon as possible to avoid further volatility embark. upon the mill and encourage the ball is in zimbabwe covering the elections for us she joins us tonight from the capital already good evening to you melanie we know at least one military unit was deployed to disperse the protesters i mean what is the situation there a lot of people around the world ask you why would you use the military to handle civilian protesters have a sense november of this has become a possibility in zimbabwe and as you've seen today they did deploy them in a train now the situation has calmed down a little bit we have not seeing people in the center anymore but during the day it was incredibly violent there were a military helicopters everywhere tear gas i had gunshots throughout the entire day and it wasn't only the protesters that experienced
9:03 pm
a lot of violence it was also the reporters here on the ground had called the who had their cameras broken down had rifles pointed at them so it's been really a repression of freedom of speech and media today as well and when the presidential election results come in we might be seeing even more of that happening the certainly very troubling and it comes as the opposition says that the delay in releasing the results of the presidential election really are tantamount to fraud do we know why there is this delay. we don't know why there is that delay what we do know is that people are saying the way that it works is here we have the eleven forms with other forms stating the result of the presidential vote they have to come in from eleven thousand polling stations all over the country and the m.d.c. is concerned because they didn't have enough funds to send polling agents to the
9:04 pm
different polling stations to monitor the process and because they have all they all have to come to harare and on transport they could be manipulated course we cannot confirm those claims yet though we know that the european union had a white some observers on the ground you've spoken with them do they share the concerns that we've been hearing from the opposition they do share some of the concerns for sure i've spoken to the head of the e.u. observe a commission here in zimbabwe and he has been saying on the one hand yes of course we can improve the country for having very negative really peaceful election campaigns and the election day itself but there were severe irregularities as well especially when it comes to access to the state media there were really a mouthpiece to the. p.f. and when it comes to the ballot papers there have been irregularities in printing as well he said that they will closely monitor the situation post-election as well
9:05 pm
and you know we saw these disturbing signs today the military on the street. of shooting up of the year people being killed tonight who has the upper hand who has the power in zimbabwe. it's difficult to say both probable possible presidents do it somehow and from their results this morning it does look like my god what is going to claim the presidency but chamisa has been saying on social media that the president see is his and will be and he's been encouraging supporters to go out on the streets and they are following suit so we'll see what happens in the next days but when the presidential election votes come out as i said there could be more violence happening and if the consents continue that the country has not been conducting fair and free elections but also faces isolation from the international community and of course people here in the

open controversial new processing centers for refugees now authorities want to hold asylum seekers there while their applications are process which can take up to eighteen months they will deport anyone he was rejected critics say that the system will gather wise new arrivals. from many refugees arriving in germany in future this is what home will look like this reception facility in a former u.s. army barracks in the bavarian city of bam bag is the model for the new refugee centers to be known as centers the acronym stands for a rival decision and return the key idea various departments which look at asylum applications will be together in one place migration agency labor office well federal authority even the cools the claim is that will mean applications it dealt with more quickly. with these centers the migration agency will in most cases be

able to issue documents in three or three and a half months whether people are to be granted refugee status or rejected them. this new approach is the latest chapter in germany's effort to deal with migration since the increase in the numbers fleeing to europe and the government's decision in twenty fifteen to open the borders the challenge of making migration on this scale work has become clear in many cases it has taken too long for people to find out whether they have a chance of staying in germany and that in turn has held up any chance of them finding a job or integrating into society the residents of the anchor facilities will be able to leave to go shopping or for other reasons despite that critics say they have tantamount to deportation centers. the plan is to open these facilities all across germany or in most parts of the country that will lead to a massive worsening of conditions for asylum seekers. currently holds around

fourteen hundred migrants if things go smoothly similar centers may be opened in other parts of germany for political correspondent thomas sparrow he is covering the story for us tonight good evening to you so must we know that these new processing centers are controversial so what are the critics say. essentially that they will isolate refugees and that by isolating refugees that will actually affect their capacity to integrate in germany that is one of the key arguments that critics have been using against this so-called anchor does on the other hand those who are in favor of them those who who actually proposed among developed them have said that this will make processes more effective and more comprehensive and in fact if you look at germany's coalition agreement it specifically mentions these and percent and the fact that germany wants to make these promises overall more quickly and more comprehensive. so far germany has been slow to process asylum

applications are these new standards are they the answer to speeding up this process well it is at least the goal and it is the goal of interior minister horst is a whole thing whether they will actually speed up the whole process that's obviously something that we still have to wait for because they have only just started as we saw in our reports and this is only seen as a test phase which if it is successful could then be may be applied in other parts of germany but it's important to stress that this is only one pot of the whole asylum procedure in germany that may decide the case of specific individuals in germany but then if for example there are side implication is approved then you have the big challenge of integrating them into german society on the other hand if there asylum application is rejected you then have to return them to their countries of origin and that is obviously another big problem because in most cases you have to have an agreement with those specific countries so yes it may speed up the process but the challenge still remains a big one for germany and the centers they are the brainchild of the interior

minister horst zahle for he comes from bulgaria and so far we only have these centers in bavaria are we likely to see them elsewhere. not at the moment because of the issues that i explained but it is important to understand why very obviously one issue is because most refugees came through bavaria in the first place but obviously the other issue is that very. very important regional election in october on the c.s.u. of ovarian conservatives this is the popular c.d.u. they have been losing ground in bavaria for example the a david alternative for germany they have become painting on a platform that is all very focused on restricting the entry of refugees and that is probably why the interior minister has been presenting also these ideas that ultimately want to present a more restrictive policy of immigration in germany our correspondent on sparrow on the story for us tonight here in berlin thomas thank you. and eighteen year old
