a thousand children in the u.s. state of pennsylvania span of seventy years. plus another standoff at sea comes to an end as these migrants docked in malta after being stranded on the rescue ship for a day but their journey is far from over malta says they can dock but they can't stay. off it's good to have you with us tonight a state of emergency is in effect for the italian city of genoa the prime minister today declared a twelve month state of emergency as the country seeks to deal with the collapse of a key highway bridge a prime minister conte promising millions of euros in aid to the. a major port city
10:02 pm
and blaming the tragedy on the company responsible for the bridges upkeep of the fifty year old marandi bridge was scheduled for extensive maintenance later this year but it collapsed yesterday during a heavy rain storm a section of concrete the size of a soccer pitch and dozens of vehicles crashed on to buildings and railway lines below thirty nine deaths have been confirmed so far firefighters are now spending a second night searching for survivors. the scene in genoa is one of the to devastation. firefighters and doctors have been working around the clock to pull survivors out of the rubble. and they help folk that they can still find more people or life. but the families of those who died a facing a grim reality problems at the gym i started to call him forty times fifty times and then i started also to call his friend who was together with his wife and then
10:03 pm
i came to the hospital and they said that he was no me. some relatives are waiting at the hospital for news of loved ones and good grief his name is not among the missing not among the hospital patients we don't know anything i hope he's in this ambulance arriving now because i was just told that they found someone and he answered his phone last night so we hope this could be a good sign. if there were. emergency workers say the most difficult part of the rescue effort is still to come. from this evening we'll start moving some of the biggest segments of concrete from the collapsed bridge where. we're doing this in order to create new spaces for our teams to enter so they can check for other survivors of their persona for now the focus is still on rescue. but many italians are now asking questions how could this have happened and who if
10:04 pm
anyone is responsible. over morning. bondage and pills and she joins us tonight from general good evening to you charlotte lead let's start with this rescue effort it's been almost thirty six hours since the bridge collapsed is there any hope of finding more survivors. rescuers we spoke to this morning brant still very optimistic that they would find survivors among the rubble as the day goes on there that hope really has started to fade people that we've spoken to said that only bodies have been recovered from the wreckage so far no survivors yet today so it really isn't looking very optimistic for people head nevertheless search teams will continue that work for another night there will be sniffer dogs once again here in the wreckage behind me floodlights lighting up the area trying to find anybody that may still be that is
10:05 pm
the interior minister in fact not so long ago said miracles do happen as the hours go on it is getting more and more likely that the search for survivors will become a search for bodies and as time passes i think we're all realizing that this tragedy this story has to do with a lot more than just a collapsed bridge we know that a state of emergency has been declared for all the jenna world to stay in effect for the next year we're also hearing that some three hundred families have been made homeless by this tragedy what do we know about the people who have been evacuated from their home shore. hundreds of people have been evacuated since the crash now the reason for that brand you can probably see just behind me by looking at the bridge there is still a section of it that is still standing the fear is that could also collapse now the part of the bridge that has collapsed landed on warehouses in london on rail tracks
10:06 pm
so none of the victims on the ground because they were in their homes that the problem with the area where the bridge is still standing is there are a lot of residences say people have been asked to leave the area now that's making a lot of people very angry they don't know how long they're going to be moved away from their homes for they have no idea in fact whether or not they'll ever be able to go back because of course they have to either try and secure the area for us or totally dismiss this bridge that could take a very long time and we spoke to one person who was very near him he said that as a child in fact he played near this bridge he said that it could be weeks even months before he's able to go back you know you know it's just unimaginable what people are going through right now just because they live near a bridge we know that italy's government has been pointing the finger to j. bridges private operator and also at the european union what more can you tell us about that. that's right now this really is the first big challenge for italy's new
10:07 pm
government they have come out fighting they've been speaking very passionate terms about who is to blame the e.u. as you said was one of the people they say they have cited as one of the bodies that size it is being responsible they say that the u. has limited the amount of funding available for infrastructure and that's the allegation that the ministers here have leveled at the european union but they've really gone for the company that operates this part of the bridge behind me now the allegation is for ministers that they just didn't do enough to maintain the bridge that it was not safe enough that something that to some extent has been backed up by people that we've spoken to here a lot of locals have said that they was very nervous about traveling on this bridge one man told us that when he drove across he would deliberately drive just a little bit fall said just because he felt very nervous about being on the bridge which he said he just didn't seem very safe to him the company that has fiercely
10:08 pm
denied that it's maintenance done has went up to scratch it said it's on regular checks and bided by the law and lot of people here they were pointing out that this anger this blame game that's really playing out here in italy at the moment isn't going to help them what they really need to know now is what happens next and also they want to assure and says that something like this one top and again there is very deep concern about other bridges across italy italian infrastructure they want to know what's being done to prevent this tragedy playing out again and surely you know when we look behind you there you know we realize that this is the second night that people are dealing with this tragedy the second night that rescue workers are trying to find survivors are just shows a little bit more about the task that these emergency workers are facing tonight. this is a huge logistical to taking brand as i'm sure you can see behind me there are still enormous flaps of concrete thrift and metal is part of the wreckage now there is
10:09 pm
a danger in china to move these enormous lives because of course they fear that it could trigger another collapse and perhaps cross any vehicles that might be below them and potentially harm anybody who may still be alive underneath that rubble as they get to trying to take it very very carefully they're using sniffer dogs trying to sift out to see if there are any survivors is that one of the huge problems facing them those that they simply don't know how many people were on the bridge how many vehicles with that they generally whether or not they are still searching for people and our correspondent charles and fill in the story for us tonight in general charlotte thank you. a grand jury in the u.s. state of pennsylvania has published its report into the sexual abuse of children by roman catholic priests the report claims that at least a thousand children were molested and raped by hundreds of priests over seventy years it goes on to accuse senior church leaders including the current archbishop of washington d.c.
10:10 pm
of systematically covering up reports of pedophilia brought to them by parishioners . just many victims of way to decades for this investigation pain evident as they attended a press conference by the grand jury it found three hundred one priest sexually abused children in that cabin over one thousand child victims were identified by our investigation though the grand jury no. they believe that number was down. investigators say and in many cases records have been lost and some victims were too afraid to come forward the abuse states back over seven decades some described the helplessness they experienced in a video released by investigator. in ny. for forty seven. buz you. do they never heard of such
10:11 pm
a thing because they covered it up church leaders in pennsylvania stunned at the scale of the abuse admit mistakes were made i humbly offer my sincere apology to reach victims who has been violated by anyone affiliated with the catholic church. i hope that you can accept it in a few of the priests are likely to stand trial as many cases are now too old only two people have been charged small comfort for victims far from world this story i'm joined from washington d.c. by julie's holes where she is the religion reporter for the washington post julie is good to have you on the program you know we used the word unprecedented a lot especially in describing this story talk to me a little bit though about how the reaction in the u.s. has been considering just how best these accusations are. it's really
10:12 pm
this scale of the investigation here that is as you say unprecedented this is the biggest state run investigation into sexual abuse here in the u.s. and the catholic church it covers six dioceses most of the state of pennsylvania there's over three hundred priests who are accused there's over a thousand victims and even for people who have known about the sexual abuse crisis in the catholic church for many years seeing it laid out on this scale in this comprehensive detail as well as seeing it at a time when cardinal mccarrick who is a cardinal here in washington just resigned recently he's the first u.s. cardinal to ever resign due to sexual abuse allegations all of that coming right now people really are shaken in a way that they haven't been by clergy sexual abuse in a long time so there's a lot of shock but one of the. action so far there's been only two charges a gets the more than three hundred abusers if that's correct and whose names are
10:13 pm
known why why is there. well this report dates back all the way to nineteen forty seven so many of these priests are no longer living almost none of them if not nine they're currently in active ministry in the church and as for all of the priests who either have been removed from ministry because of the accusations or that they've retired in the years since most of them can't be prosecuted in the criminal justice system here because the statute of limitations limits how long after the crime takes place the state attorney general's office can bring these charges and one of the recommendations of the grand jury was to raise the statutes of limitations and to change the law so that more of these priests can be prosecuted where do you think things will go moving forward julie the catholic church we've heard time and time again from freeze that they insist when some type of criminal action takes place the church tries to keep it within the church
10:14 pm
instead of letting you know the judicial process of the state takeover can that continue to stand considering the these allegations re i mean we see right now that just because the church certainly does not always want the state to the state wherever you are is not listening to that and is investigating in australia cardinal pell is on trial in chile a special they're investigating here in pennsylvania this investigation happened and there's going to be a really considerable push for changing those laws in pennsylvania and what about this cover up that the report also addresses are people likely to face charges. for then. it's really the same timeframe where they're covering up and one of the things that the report found was that most of this abuse that was reported was happening before two thousand and two before
10:15 pm
the boston globe spotlight investigation that. really broke up in this story and the church did start reporting abuse to the authorities start removing people from ministry whenever they were accused so most of these are old cases which means anybody who is covering up these cases that was a long time ago two statutes of limitation apply yeah it will be interesting to see what the pope does we understand about ten days he's going to ireland in a lot of people are expecting him to say something about this case we will see julie sales were religion reporter for the washington post joining us tonight from washington d.c. julie thank you very much thank you here is some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world democratic party voters in the u.s. state of vermont have nominated a transgender candidate to run for governor christine hall quiz defeated three other democrats in tuesday's primary she now faces

the u.s. to add sanctions. well maybe some investors are starting to get tired of the daily changing headlines and have started taking the profits and vested money off the table funny and now could tar is dumping in the country has pledged to invest fifteen billion dollars in turkey according to officials and like basically everything else and this conflict this is a strategic move now who's going to stand with who the united states is our major trade partner but it's not the only one that's what turkey's trade minister said minister said earlier and on the other hand turkey is a way less important for the united states it's actually number thirty two on the list of america's biggest trade partners so everyone should be aware of the fact that this is not a fight his country is going to win these new sanctions are not going to seriously hurt the united states not economically and turkey's g.d.p.
10:19 pm
is something like one percent of the world's g.d.p. while the united states to the peace amounts to more than fifteen percent of the world's g.d.p. funny right so there's a lot at stake on two different stories you're seeing some serious developments in tuscaloosa pair move to go pro and what's the latest what do you hear. so forces are suggesting that the agency f.t.c. is moving into a formal investigation of tesla the wall street journal reported last week that the as if he had made an inquiry into a test about whether muscles were truthful and on thursday bloomberg reported that the agency was intensifying its inquiry it does not come as a surprise that the f.c.c. seems to be investigating as this tweet stirred up a lot in recent years the agency has been pretty business friendly so now the question for investors is if the f.c.c. is going to make an example of tests or if they're going to follow a milder path but even if they should decide very pro-business there is
