its cover have rocked the church will francis respond to the growing pressure to cooperate with investigators. plus bonus league football is back tonight the new season kicks off with bahrain taking off and i'm a german football has a lot to prove after a disastrous world cup look at the challenges ahead. i'm brian thomas thanks so much for being with us australia's beleaguered prime minister malcolm turnbull has been ousted after a majority in his own party supported calls for a new leadership treasurer scott morrison won the party's ballot that followed defeating former home affairs minister peter dutton by forty five votes to forty this marks a bittersweet day for turnbull although he's been forced out he'll be replaced by one of his closest backers that might surprise you want to die like this. well
9:02 am
after the leadership change over malcolm turnbull gave his final speech as australian prime minister and we have set we have achieved a great deal it has been i you know i there are some things that i would have liked to have completed or done more on that to be really honest with you we've got so much more done in this government and particularly in this parliament than i expected or and i certainly a lot more than any of you expected as you know skeptics that you all are so look thank you all very much and i wish you all the best and above all i wish the new prime minister elect the very best and his team thank you. let's go straight into analyst roger maynards standing by for us in sydney good morning roger this time yesterday we were talking about the possibility of a change where you are what was the deciding factor in turnbull's quick exit.
9:03 am
well basically it's been a day of high a political drama started earlier this morning the prime minister demanded to see all forty three people's names on a petition before he agreed to call what's known as a leadership spill here it took a couple as a sort of learner it also took more legal shenanigans when the solicitor general had to give his advice on whether peter dutton was a liberty to sit in parliament that was turmel as a main rival and then that was also to allow in the leadership spill went ahead just before lunch and. it was a three way race between peter dugan scott morrison and julie bishop as the foreign affairs minister julie bishop didn't make the the first round of the ballot and she she had to withdraw after the first round and left it between scott morrison and
9:04 am
peter dunne and scott morrison won the day about forty five votes to forty a lot of big margin you have to say it isn't a slim margin of course or yeah it is the margin what can you tell us about our scott morrison australia's new prime minister where does he want to take the country. well in many ways it's very similar to scott to a good turn what is greater sense that they they share the same sort of political thinking they're much the same on climate change and energy policy well they are. more isn't done to support dark immigration in australia and that's quite a political quite a controversial issue here but they're much the same sort of people in many ways there though there were close confidants in power in this treasurer and you know term as prime minister and in many ways we might well have see the much the same as before and that will anger the right wing of the liberal party who've been trying
9:05 am
to. turn a lot of artists today ok what does this mean about the possibility of early elections or is that something that's out there at this hour this is a very strong possibility knuckle turmel a signal of his intention to resign as an end the it's early soon that will mean the government of one's seat majority will disappear if the opposition labor party decide to hold a no confidence vote and that wins then we could see an early general election at the moment on strayer doesn't have to hold an election until next may but it may or the government may well have and forced by their or the lack of a majority in government and it could well be that australia goes to the polls before the end of the year roger manager maynard forests in sydney as ever roger thanks very much for that long run well malcolm turnbull is the latest in
9:06 am
a very long list of australian leaders to be dumped before the end of their term here's a look at how camera has earned the title of coup capital of the western world. australia has a new prime minister again but how long will scott morrison last he's the sixth prime minister in just over a decade none of his predecessors filled the post three year term. the tunnel started in two thousand and seven with labor's kevin rudd who took the reins from one of australia's longest serving prime ministers with rudd's popularity plummeting by two thousand and ten his party colleague julia guillard defeated him in a leadership challenge becoming the country's first female prime minister except rudd made a comeback in two thousand and thirteen giving guillard a taste of her own medicine by wrangling party leadership back. his second stay in the prime minister's office would be brief just a few months later voters had their say in part fed up with labor's infighting they
9:07 am
threw them out in favor of their liberal opponents the liberal party leader tony abbott assumed the prime ministership for a time anyway. this will prove the people of the right all is taking a page from labour's chaotic playbook not them turnbull made his move against abbott assuming leadership in two thousand and fifteen. now what he did to abbott well just got done to him turnbull bowed out after being pushed to call a leadership meeting which he considered a vote of no confidence scott morrison is top liberal dog for now but there's no telling how long he might last all that is certain is australian public opinion the persistent intra party take downs in both major parties has confidence in them at an all time low. it's to ireland now where pope francis begins a visit today it's the first papal visit in about forty years his trip comes as the

vatican faces growing pressure to cooperate with criminal investigators on current and past allegations of child sex abuse by priests damning new revelations in the united states chile and australia have called into question the leadership of many bishops and cardinals francis is expected to meet some of the victims but critics want accountability now these are troubling times for the vatican the u.s. state of pennsylvania is currently investigating three hundred priests who will abuse pope francis has strongly condemned the wrongdoing. survivors and victims should know that the pope is on their side he wants the church to listen to them so that we can root out this tragic horror which has destroyed the lives of so many innocent people. the catholic church has been rife with sexual abuse for decades
9:09 am
many of the crimes were covered up in july and the archbishop of adelaide australia for the postman was forced to resign after it emerged that he'd kept quiet about the priest sexual abuse his one year prison sentence was commuted to house arrest in chile priest fernando cut a demon is alleged to have accused children for decades he was considered one of the country's most important church figures chillan state prosecutors are now investigating around one hundred sixty cases of abuse and in germany hundreds of cases of abuse have come to light one of the most shocking five hundred fifty children at a catholic school in the pagans book of victims of sexual molestation up until the one nine hundred ninety s. . the streets of dublin are getting ready for pope francis visit hundreds of abuse cases have been uncovered across ireland francis wants to meet with some of the victims but that hasn't made his visit any less controversial. let's talk about this more now to do that i'm joined by peter saunders he's the founder of britain's

national association for people abuse in childhood and is himself a survivor of abuse peter thank you so much for being with us i'd like this question the global organization ending clergy abuse e.c.s. calling for pope francis to commit immediately to an action plan to end clergy abuse and stop the cover up do you expect him to do that in ireland today. well it might be wishful thinking that he will do that or say that but i would want to immediately banish any notion that we are talking about something that is in any sense and i was talking to a bishop here last night who was talking about abuse as being something that you know has now been dealt with is in the past is historic and i have to say that it in no way is this an historic issue the church globally is still covering up moving of using priests from close to close this is an ongoing tragedy
9:11 am
of of criminality around the world and it's got to stop and the formation of our initiative ending clergy abuse is truly the first global initiative where ever the pope goes wherever the church really is its head we are going to be there standing alongside of survivors in those countries because it's a global it's a global as you know it's a global problem this is not in any sense an irish problem you mention carradine or in in chile a it's not in any sense a chilean problem that the church will often try and make it into a localized this you in no way is it a localized it's you the church has being and is infested with with people who who are criminals who attack children and even when they are apprehended in one place the church actively protects them and moves them to another place often to another
9:12 am
country typically to the southern hemisphere where the spotlight rarely seems to shine you know this is what's emerging what you've just described and to end this the pope is being called on to obligate dioceses around the world to report sex abuse cases past and turn to civil authorities it's astounding at least to me that this is not already the case could we see some movement here peter. well you know i hope so on a man of faith so i pray so but you know if we were talking about a global corporation if we were talking about you know a multinational company that had committed such a vile crimes and was covering up for its employees there would be global outrage and yet the church has gotten away with murder abuse and murder and i don't and i don't understate that turned murder because i know and my colleagues know of far too many men and women who have taken their lives because they cannot deal they
9:13 am
cannot cope with the trauma of what was inflicted on them as children and we know it's a global problem we know it goes on in the home we go it goes on in many institutions but the church is the largest global institution and i'm sad to say not having been brought up or catholic that it is to use a business term it's the market leader in criminality in this particular area and i certainly hope francis has never for five years and it's time he did something concrete not just it's you meet him after apologies we'll appear we're getting an idea of the dimensions now briefly if you could easier the group i talked about says that three thousand four hundred clergy have been found guilty or implicated in the sex abuse by church authorities themselves what's the church doing with these clergy are they still working with children are they still working with teens . sadly in some cases unbelievably ryan yes
9:14 am
and that is an utter outrage we are we are aware of priests who have been convicted of these crimes and then have been allowed back in to ministry i mean what is going on it's it's it's criminal and i'm often and often lost for words but i'm lost for words on how this church our church has got at least attritional church has done away with this for so long something has got to change and the figures whatever they are whatever the official figures are in terms of perpetrators and we often forget the victims but the figures are far far greater than our of our knowledged peter saunders thank you so much for your courage in coming forward peter and thanks for all your work our founding britain's national association for people abused in childhood thank you very much for being with us and q. . now for a look at some of the other stories making the news at this hour hurricane lane is pounding hawaii with high winds with terentia rains as it moves across the pacific the storm has been downgraded to category three but can cause major damage with

harrington from the sports desk here to talk about that good morning crest morning lots of hype lots of excitement will this fall be better than the dismal summer we've seen for german football yet the dismal summer you're speaking of of course is the premature exit oh yes there are many though it's going to champions for the world cup yeah of course they're still suffering from that you know dismal performance you know put in terms of the british the it coming up some fans argue that it is lacking competitiveness you know but there's a big match coming up tonight by vs hoffenheim two. by opponents i would say buyer typically is the reigning champion of the for the sake of but some good news for you brad we do have a report previewing the season let's take a look at that now ok. the new bundesliga season is upon us ready to treat fans to another glass of the motions. germany shocking world cup campaign however is still fresh in focus as well as the poor performance of
9:17 am
bundesliga clubs in europe paying competition last internationally german football is going through a bleak period only by merely because stood out they made the semifinals of the champions league last season and have marched to six consecutive bundesliga titles with little competition under new coach nico because that's the champions expect their writing to continue. its six months. by now six times champions in a row who want to make sure that we have champions again for a seventh time but we also know that the others will not make it easy. to try everything to take the crown office gotten by instalments is dangerous the top a race can only be competitive if other clubs boost their spending but you do the fifty plus one rule investors can completely take over the bundesliga clubs massive transfer fees paid by sides in england spain or by french heavyweights paras such
9:18 am
a man simply cannot be matched but to spend seventy three million euro zone new players the most out of any bundesliga club after a turbulent twelve months there is hope of the revival is known as the talks or more the situation where a lot of questions have to be asked but i'm a long way from saying that everything was bad. but of course we know that we have to raise our performances so that we can once again treat our fans to proper football. but. the bonus leaguers becoming a development and selling league. as they go runners up show cars sold central defender t. located to p.s.g. for thirty seven million euros spots they still want to challenge by and for the championship i often hi i'm also haven't invested heavily but their coach is upbeat in his final season at the club every team basically wants to be champion we're giving everything to have a successful season and then we'll see what comes at the end of the campaign
9:19 am
a more exciting season that's what old german football fans are hoping for but there has been a support of backlashes the bundesliga becomes increasingly commercialized yet without the increased cash flow the legal full further behind its rivals it's a balancing act that the point is they can muster in the upcoming season. it's a very tough balancing act isn't it press it is the bonus league are in danger of falling behind countries like england spain even france and especially because of the restrictions it's under but let me explain those restrictions really quickly in the bonus they get squat unique they have what you call the fifty plus one rule which is designed to give fifty plus one majority control to the club the voters and it prevents if one investor coming in to have a majority vote in pretty much taking over the club and changing the tradition completely you know some fans argue that restricts clubs spending if we're strict
9:20 am
simply becoming competitive against teams such as byron you know so soon so that's one thing or you could suggest that teams spend wisely and retain players for longer because as we heard of the report the bun as they get has become somewhat of a development league you know for players just to increase their value and then springboard to another league so. i'm split on the decision we have to wait and see how this season pans out because you know hired as we saw has a new man in charge so we don't know if they will you know remain at the top of the table or not we have to see ok traditional sayings those restrictions keep tradition in the club talking about the richest club now by in munich it looks like they're about to sell one of their all time greats right you know drop would say that's been going back and forth you know according to reports there were two teams interested manchester united buyer reportedly refused that offer and according to the latest report i've just read this morning that they have reduced their asking price for a tank you know given the option for p.s.g.
9:21 am
if they want to do pull the trigger but a court and of course boateng has voiced his desire as well of joining the french champions i mean they have a name are superstars so we have to wait and see what happens but set. is discussed in a television interview that you might see drawn bulleting as we exit by the end of the transfer window so remains to be saying we have to see what happens ok there's a lot there remains you see in the season let's take a look at dortmund and their new coach i was out looking for a you know he's had two stents in the bin as they did before he's a smart tactician a perfectionist and he's known for developing young players and young talent you don't want a particular marco royce he gets credited for pretty much bringing marco royce it's a player he's known as today and increasing his value so that's a really good matchup when you consider all of the young talent that exists at dortmund and he's a perfectionist you know that's also a you know a good thing because he's going to be hard on the players and he's going to demand

results which is the most important thing for dorman right now chris thanks very much chris arne for us from the sports this. or earlier this month scientists in siberia made a sensational find a modified full that's between thirty and forty thousand years old and now they've shown off their discover to the public for the first time it's the world's best preserved prehistoric baby worse its hair tell me we're going to all kept intact by siberia's very chilly permafrost the photos found in a remote crater known by locals as the deep ways to the under. well world of central bankers are meeting three monitors following on the underworld hopefully not to brian sanford packets from around the world are coming together in jackson hole wyoming for their annual economic retreat organized by the federal reserve investors are especially awaiting saturday's keynote address from fed chairman jerome powell it'll be his first chance to comment publicly on recent

criticism for the white house president's charm states he was unhappy with the fit's plan to hike interest rates and that was a break with the tradition that presidents do not comment on the fed's decisions house remarks in jackson hole will also be examined for any clues as to whether he thinks trump's trade policies will hurt the u.s. economy and for more on this i would like to check now with callum pickering see the economist at their back bank in london good to have you with us so we just heard central bank has a gathering there in jackson hole and i'm sure they have a lot to talk about what's the biggest issue. biggest issue is essentially trade wars and fed poor say now when it comes to fed policy the message from jackson hole from any of the fed bankers will simply be that the fed is not trying to spoil the u.s. or global swing through its interest rate hikes simply trying too much the renewed strength when it comes to trade well that's an easy one economists hate trade wars
9:24 am
it raises prices for no reason so they'll be probably a warning that if the u.s. continues to push for trade wars that will worsen economic conditions both at home in the u.s. and abroad well let's stick to u.s. trade and foreign policy because for example fresh sanctions again iran prompted several global players to pull out of the country including british airways how much pressure is there from the white house. well it really links to the u.s. economy the u.s. is still the biggest and most important economy in the world to assume a certain extent we all have to downs to the us is chewed the trade issue is much bigger than the sanctions issue we worry over here in europe a lot about trade wars of course we end some thirty percent of our g.d.p. from exports the u.s. it's some fifteen good news is the u.s. and e.u. seem to have seen signed some kind of truce since the young trump meeting some two
9:25 am
weeks ago now we have to focus on the u.s. china issue latest news varies there's no real progress so we could see some more escalation of the trade war between the u.s. and china that will be tough for markets to deal with talking of markets and what they have to deal with because president donald trump in an interview said today that if he was to be impeached that would be a big problem for markets let's just listen to what he said exactly. i'll tell you what if i ever got a ph i think the market would crash i think everybody would be very poor. because without this thinking you would see that you would seeing numbers that you wouldn't believe in reverse. right there was on trump in an interview there callin pickering say the economist a bank in london basically trump says back off or wall street will collapse but when bill clinton was impeached a twenty years ago stock markets didn't actually fare where very well what do you
9:26 am
make of his comments there. i think probably as he always has a habit of doing mr trump is painting himself a little bit too much of a complement the reason that he may have boosted markets earlier this year on earlier washed year is due to the fiscal stimulus i'm the economic reform but those two policies are have a largely being enacted so if trump were to step down now it would still be more of the same before the mentals driving markets would continue. and last name and we heard his criticism of the u.s. fed and its intention to raise interest rates do you think that the fed will nevertheless continue despite outspoken criticism i think so at the margin it may actually make the fed a little more hawkish that means a little more inclined to hike interest rates just to prove a point that it is indeed independent right alan pickering this senior economist at

bear in their bank in london thank you so much for your time and official figures just hours show germany's government recorded a surplus of more than forty eight billion euros in the first half of this year producing a surplus of two point nine percent well the spending rising only slightly that's likely to lead to new calls for increased public investment in things like schools and infrastructure and we'll get some market analysis from the frankfurt stock exchange in the next hour and here's just a reminder off the top story we're following for you australia's prime minister malcolm turnbull has been voted out of office by his party its replacement is scott morrison who takes over after a week of party infighting is the seventh australian prime minister in eleven years . what you did on the news come july from girl and you said it.
