this is deja vu news live from berlin a party coup throws australia's prime minister out of office now come to terms all exits after a week of political turmoil income scott morrison the six prime minister in a decade the apple still use had enough of the revolving door at the top we'll go live to sydney for more on that also coming up pope francis prepares to fly to ireland for the first papal visit in four decades but revelations of child sex abuse by priests and its cover up are rocking the church will francis respond to

the growing pressure to cooperate with investigators. plus bonus league football is back tonight the new season kicks off requirements a young often i'm but german football has a lot to prove after a disastrous world cup look at the challenges ahead. i'm brian thomas thanks so much for being with us australia's beleaguered prime minister malcolm turnbull has been ousted after a majority in his own party supported calls for a new leadership treasurer scott morrison is now the country's incoming prime minister after winning the party ballot he defeated his closest rival the former home affairs minister peter dutton by forty five votes to forty now i'm turned bowl was forced out by an increasingly divided party that's grappling with poor polling results and desperate to extend its time in power. a short while
10:02 am
ago australia's incoming prime minister spoke to reporters and set out his government's top priorities. let me also tell you my media properties in addition to of course are economic and national security is the draft. i've already discussed this is georgia said with the lua national party the season most urgent and precinct need right now and i'll be meeting with mind your general die as soon as possible to review after our response plans let's go straight to journalist roger maynard in the city for more days you are roger morrison saying there his top priority is australia's crippling drought but he also said he wants to unify is party after what has been a bruising week can he do both. very hard in my ability but a little bit of progress with the drought funds and of money into helping the
10:03 am
farmers but his biggest task of the moment is the to unify the party then of some of the forty people and he is you know voted against him in that of today's ballot which went you know forty five to forty in its flavor so he's that means quite a lot of significant. a sixth of the party still disagree with malcolm turnbull and scott morris and lois's larsson was a very close ally of turnbull and you know full of many of his economic policies and you had only a climate change and emissions targets. whether or not the the right wing of the liberal party will now you know come in and win the golden and support scott morrison jumbles successor well that remains to be seen ok sounds like it's going to be a very fragile government there in canberra what was the deciding factor in turnbull's quick exit. well i mean basically don't come back to energy prices and the energy
10:04 am
policy of the turnbull government there's been a lot of criticism about energy in cringely price increases over the past few months this week there was a of a staggering slump in the opinion polls for american turnbull and his government and that really instigated the efforts by peter dutton his main rival in all this to call a leadership ballot he tried that on on tuesday that had another good day and on this occasion. the out of the ballot was held by the call of peter duncan didn't actually succeed him self that the top job went to a scott morrison who now has a difficult task of trying to reunite the party at a time when the government probably won't have much more georget turnbull is going to leave your seat in the environment and equipped and of the government at the moment have a one seat but already after that it'll it'll have no authority whatsoever ok
10:05 am
incredible instability there are six prime ministers in our lab in years roger what's causing this sustained political instability at the very top in australia well it's hard to put a finger on it really i suppose the. people the bulk of the politicians within the party got a burglar alarm that they might lose their seat at the next general election that election has to be held by may of next year but could well be held a lot sooner than that now so you know fear of losing their seats one really took going to asia today called the australian parliament or m.p.'s as a manic driven egoists. look at the peoples and electorate as you get to australia and look to sions at her as the last madness that says there is a problem by be there roger maynard in sydney for us they've roger thanks very much and get. well here in germany some six hundred people have been evacuated from
10:06 am
their homes as a wildfire blazes through woodland southwest of the german capital berlin the rapidly spreading fire covers an area about the size of four hundred sports fields and a number of hundreds of firefighters are battling the flames right now but their work has been made harder by old munition from world war two buried in the forest where this fire is happening right now police have said people though are not in danger at the moment. to ireland now where pope francis is due to begin a two day visit this weekend it is the first papal visit nearly forty years his trip comes as the vatican faces growing pressure from catholics to cooperate with criminal investigators on allegations of current and past child sex abuse damning new revelations in the united states chile and australia have called into question the leadership of bishops and cardinals francis is expected to meet with some of
10:07 am
the victims but critics want accountability now. these are troubling times for the vatican the u.s. state of pennsylvania is currently investigating three hundred priests who will abuse pope francis has strongly condemned the wrongdoing. survivors and victims should know that the pope is on their side he wants the church to listen to them so that we can root out this tragic horror which has destroyed the lives of so many innocent people. the catholic church has been rife with sexual abuse for decades many of the crimes were covered up in july and the archbishop of adelaide australia for the postman was forced to resign after it emerged that he'd kept quiet about the priest sexual abuse his one year prison sentence was commuted to house arrest in chile priest fernando cut a deal is alleged to have views children for decades he was considered one of the country's most important church figures and state prosecutors are now investigating
10:08 am
around one hundred sixty cases of abuse and in germany hundreds of cases of abuse have come to light one of the most shocking five hundred fifty children at a catholic school in the pagans book were victims of sexual molestation up until the one nine hundred ninety s. . the streets of dublin are getting ready for pope francis visit hundreds of abuse cases have been uncovered across ireland francis wants to meet with some of the victims but that hasn't made his visit any less controversial. let's talk about this more now to do that i'm joined by peter saunders he's the founder of britain's national association for people abused in childhood and is themself a survivor of abuse peter thank you so much for being with us i'd like to this question the global organization ending clergy abuse is calling for pope francis to commit immediately to an action plan to end clergy abuse and stop the cover up do you expect him to do that in ireland today. well it might be
10:09 am
wishful thinking that he will do that or say that but i would want to immediately banish any notion that we are talking about something that is in any sense and i was talking to a bishop here last night who was talking about abuse as being something that you know has now been dealt with is in the past is historic and i have to say that it in no way is this an historic issue the church globally is still covering up moving abusing priests from place to place this is an ongoing tragedy of criminality around the world and it's got to stop and the formation of our initiative ending clergy abuse is truly the first global initiative where ever the pope goes wherever the church really is its head we are going to be there standing
10:10 am
alongside survivors in those countries because it's a global it's a global as you know it's a global problem this is not in any sense an irish problem you mention caribbean or in in chile a it's not in any sense a chilean problem that the church will often try and make it into a localized this you in no way is it a localized it's you the church has being and is infested with with people who who are criminals who attack children and even when they are apprehended in one place the church actively protects them and moves them to another place often to another country typically to the southern hemisphere where the spotlight rarely seems to shine you know this is what's emerging what you've just described and to end this the pope is being called on to obligate dioceses around the world to report sex abuse cases past and turn to civil authorities it's astounding at least to me that this is not already the case could we see some movement here peter. well you know i
10:11 am
hope so on a man of faith so i pray so but you know if we were talking about a global corporation if we were talking about you know a multinational company that had committed such a vile crimes and was covering up for its employees there would be global outrage and yet the church has gotten away with murder abuse and murder and i don't and i don't understate the term murder because i know and my colleagues know of far too many men and women who have taken their lives because they cannot deal they cannot cope with the trauma of what was inflicted on them as children and we know it's a global problem we know it goes on in the home we go it goes on in many institutions but the church is the largest global institution and i'm sad to say not having been brought up or catholic that it is to use a business term it's the market leader in criminality in this particular area and i
10:12 am
insert pope francis has it in there for five years and it's time he did something concrete not just it's you meet him after apologies we'll appear we're getting an idea of the dimensions now briefly if you could easier the group i talked about says that three thousand four hundred clergy have been found guilty or implicated in the sex abuse by church authorities themselves what's the church doing with these clergy are they still working with children are they still working with teens . sadly in some cases unbelievably ron yes and that is an utter outrage we are we are aware of priests who have been convicted of these crimes and then have been allowed back in to ministry i mean what is going on here it's it's it's criminal and i'm often i'm not a loss for words but i'm lost for words on how this church our church has got at least the two tional church has done away with this for so long something has got
10:13 am
to change and the figures whatever they are whatever the official figures are in terms of perpetrators and we often forget the victims but the figures have a far far greater than our of our knowledge to peter saunders thank you so much for your courage in coming forward peter and thanks for all your work founding britain's national socialism for people abused in childhood thank you very much for being with us and q. now for a look at some of the other stories making the news today hurricane lane is pounding hawaii with high winds and torrential rains as it moves across the pacific the storm has now been downgraded to category three but still can cause major damage with winds of up to two hundred kilometers per hour the extreme downpours have triggered flash flooding and landslides. south africa has accused president trump of fueling racial tensions after he said farmers were being forced off their land and many of them killed south africa's ruling a.n.c. plans to speed up the expropriation of land without compensation to redress racial

a right wing rival inside the party this week. football now and we're about twelve hours from the kickoff of the bundesliga season germany's top division of football still one of the top leagues in the world chris harrington from the sports desk here to talk about that good morning crest morning lots of hype lots of excitement will this fall be better than the dismal summer we've seen for german football yeah that is will some years because of course is the premature exit there are many though is that if it's for the world cup yeah of course they're still suffering from that you know dismal performance you know put in terms of the but is the coming up some fans argue that it is lacking competitiveness you know but there's a big match coming up tonight by vs hoffenheim to. viable opponents i would say buyer typically is the reigning champion of the but if they go but some good news for you brad we do have a report previewing the season let's take
10:16 am
a look at that now ok. the new bundesliga season is upon us ready to treat fans to another glut of emotions. germany's shocking world cup campaign however is still fresh in focus as well as the poor performance of bundesliga clubs in europe paying competition last internationally german football is going through a bleak period only by merely because stuart out they made the semifinals of the champions league last season and of march to six consecutive bundesliga titles with little competition under new coach nico because that's the champions expect their writing to continue. and it's six months. by now six times champions in a row who want to make sure that we have champions again for a seventh time but we also know that the others will not make it easy. for them to try everything to take the crown office gotten clients dominance is dangerous the
10:17 am
top of the race can only be competitive if other clubs boost their spending but you do the fifty plus one rule investors can completely take over the bundesliga clubs massive transfer fees paid by sides in england spain or by french heavyweights paras such a man simply cannot be matched dawson to spend seventy three million euro zone you play is the most out of any bundesliga club after a turbulent twelve months there is hope of the revival is known as a top two or more situation where a lot of questions have to be asked but i'm a long way from saying that everything was bad. but of course we know that we have to raise our performances so that we can once again treat our fans to proper football. but. the bonus leaguers becoming a development and selling league. as they go runners up shelters sold central defender t. low canter to p.s.g. for thirty seven million euros but they still want to challenge pine for the
10:18 am
championship i cough and hi i'm also haven't invested heavily but their coach is upbeat in his final season at the club tell me that every team basically wants to be champion we're giving everything to have a successful season and then we'll see what comes at the end of the campaign a more exciting season that's what old german football fans are hoping for but there has been a supporter backlash as the bundesliga becomes increasingly commercialized yet without the increased cash flow the legal full further behind its rivals it's a balancing act that the point is they can must achieve in the upcoming season. it's a very tough balancing act isn't it is the bonus league are in danger of falling behind countries like england spain even france and especially because of the restrictions it's under well let me explain those restrictions really quickly in the bonus think it's quite unique they have what you call the fifty plus one rule
10:19 am
which is designed to give fifty plus one majority control to the club the voters and it prevents if one investor coming in to have a majority vote in pretty much taking over the club and changing the tradition in plea you know some fans argue that restricts clubs spending there were strict simply becoming competitive against teams such as byron you know so soon so that's one thing or you could suggest that teams just spin wisely and retain players for longer because as we heard of the report the bun as they get has become somewhat of a development league you know for players just to increase their value and then springboard to another league so i'm split on the decision we have to wait and see how this season pans out because you know byron as we saw has a new man in charge so we don't know if they will you know remain at the top of the table or not we have to see ok traditional sayings those restrictions keep tradition. in the club talking about the richest club now by in munich it looks like they're about to sell one of their all time greats right you know draw board
10:20 am
say that's been going back and forth you know according to reports there were two teams interested manchester united buyer reportedly refused that offer and according to the latest report i've just read this morning that they have reduced their asking price for jerome bullock saying you know given the option for p.s.g. if they want to do pull the trigger but a core and of course boateng has voiced his desire as well of joining the french champions i mean they have neymar superstars so we have to wait and see what happens but set. is discussed in a television interview that you might see drawing board saying as we exit by the end of the transfer window so it remains to be saying we have to see what happens ok there's a lot there remains we see in the season let's take a look at dortmund and their new coach i was out looking illusion. you know he's had it to stance in the bin as they did before he's a smart tactician a perfectionist and he's known for developing young players and young talent you don't want to particularly marco royce he gets credited for pretty much bringing
10:21 am
marco royce into the player he's known as today and increasing his value so that's a really good matchup when you consider all of the young talent that exists at dortmund and he's a perfectionist you know that's also a you know a good thing because he's going to be hard on the players and he's going to demand results which is the most important thing for dortmund right now chris thanks very much chris herring and for us from the sports this. well now this earlier this month scientists in siberia made a sensational find a mama fired for that's about four thousand years old and now they've shown off their discovery to the public for the very first time it's the world's best preserved prehistoric baby horse its hair tail main organs all kept intact by siberia's very chilly permafrost cole was found on a remote crater known by locals as the way to the underworld.
10:22 am
ok let's get over to monica now and a meeting a very powerful people today in the upper world in jackson hold a peep resize a central bank is there a gathering in jackson hole wyoming for their annual economic retreat organized by the federal reserve investors are especially awaiting saturday's keynote address from fed chairman jerome powell it'll be his first chance to comment publicly on recent criticism from the white house president dodged trump said he was unhappy with the fed's plan to hike interest rates and that was a break with the tradition that presidents do not comment on the fits decisions powells remarks in jackson hole will also be examined for any clues as to whether he thinks trump's trade policies will hurt the u.s. economy. and here officials figures just out show that germany's governments recorded a surplus of more than forty eight billion euros in the first half of this year producing a surplus of two point nine percent it is also the country's biggest surplus ever
10:23 am
recorded in a half year amid a very slight rise in spending but the wide difference between income and spend is likely to lead to new calls for increased public investment in things like schools and infrastructure trading partners especially the us a big critical of the german surplus saying no public spending keeps wages and prices down and makes german exports more competitive than others. well there is something i'd like to discuss with man of the frankfurt stock exchange danielle german of first time figures we have an eight big record surplus again perhaps it's time to invest a little bit yes the better germans with their big surplus exactly yes investments what we necessary the money is there the surplus is there and now it's time to and best and there's so many different areas where germany is way behind just this week the situation of school was a big topic here again in the country many off the stage run schools are in
10:24 am
horrible conditions teachers are missing also infrastructure and i don't just mean of roles which are in many areas also in very bad conditions but also regarding the digital infrastructure in germany is way behind a few weeks ago i was on assignment here for g.w. untied and i was amazed of all there are four g. network even in small cities in the northern part of the country here in many rule areas you might not even get a signal even here in frankfurt there are places where you have slow or almost no internet and also here at the frankfurt stock exchange germany's financial hop inside we almost don't have any cellular signal all right i hope that you could still follow the news we just mentioned that the central bank is meeting in jackson hole is taking place and does that play a role where you are oh yes they are monitoring exactly what's going to happen during this meeting you mentioned it a little bit earlier it will be also the first opportunity for mr powell to talk if
10:25 am
what he things if the trade war or conflict is going to hurt the u.s. economy investors are expecting during the next nine to twelve months three to four more interest her interest rate hikes in the united states something you just mentioned it donald trump is not going to like. in frankfurt think is a much. well meanwhile u.s. sanctions against russia appear to be biting the ruble has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar in two years now in a bid to stabilize the foreign currency russia central bank says it will stop buying foreign currency until the end of september. the turbulent day for the ruble as it plunged to a two year low against the dollar then came the announcement from the central bank and calm was restored temporarily at least analysts say there's an easy explanation for the volatility this is all related to the threat of sanctions who are for more
10:26 am
sanctions coming from the u.s. the market is full of rumors as to what may or may not be coming next out of u.s. congress and that's creating a lot of nervousness and volatility in the room or at the ruble earlier this week the u.s. imposed sanctions on two russian shipping companies accused of trading oil with north korea and russia's alleged involvement in the poisoning of former spy sergei's cripple seen here on the right could result in a new far reaching set of sanctions on the streets of moscow locals don't appear too fazed by the rubles declining value. well most of my savings are in rubles so it doesn't matter that much to me my clients pay me in rubles too so i haven't suffered losses there either the only thing which worries me is that they say prices will be growing well let's see you do fly before. you know. that. but wait and see wasn't
10:27 am
a strategy the central bank was willing to risk the rubles weaknesses come despite an increase in oil prices and a general improvement in the russian economy a fresh set of u.s. sanctions could swiftly undo those games. and here's a reminder of the top story we're following for you. australia's new prime minister scott morrison seen here on the left has been sworn in by the governor general he takes over from malcolm turnbull who was ousted up to a leadership challenge from within the governing liberal party marson is the sixth australian prime minister in a decade. and pope francis is preparing to visit ireland where sexual abuse of children by priests has rocked the church and damning new revelations in the united states chile and australia have plunged to the church into a credibility trust. this is due to the news thanks for watching. move.
