a large woodland around fifty kilometers southwest of the city despite that distance residents of good smell smoke from the fire this morning emergency services are still trying to combat the flames we'll go live to the scene just after this report. flames are ripping through this german forest the blaze has spread to an area size of four hundred football fields since it started on thursday . hundreds of firefighters have been working throughout the night to contain the places and there's an at a challenge the area is laden with munition perish in the forests during world war two. i have huge respect for the firefighters who are out there right now risking their lives we know there's i mean this i'm lying around in the forest residents said there were already some explosions. around six hundred villages had to be evacuated some had to spend the night in local shelters. the mayor of one of the
12:03 pm
villages says the situation is unprecedented. and we've already had some big fires here in the region so we do have a little experience that will never seen wildfires in this dimension where they almost enter villages and i've never seen an evacuation on this scale before nine eleven was on the shop it's still not clear how the fire started but germany has been suffering under a massive heat wave for weeks leaving many forests and fields extremely dry now the challenge is to get the flames under control authorities say it could take days. and our current one hundred grand is in the town of troy and greets until still where the fire is raging and where residents of religious which had to be evacuated are taking shelter as we heard there the scale of this fire is unprecedented what's happening there now. well at the moment right as we speak the prime minister of the province in which we are called brandenburg province is in this hole behind
12:04 pm
me where some of the people that were evacuated took shelter for the night for the past night and they are now waiting for information on whether or not they will be able to return to their villages soon at the moment they hope that this will be the case but it is not certain yet because the fire is not completely under control yet and the weather is also still unpredictable it's cloudy here it could possibly rain but at the same time there's quite a strong wind that is predicted to come up and that could fan the flames again so it's very uncertain at the moment how this is going to go on now you've been talking to some of the people who are being affected what have they been telling you what have they experienced. but what happened is that pretty late last night they had to leave their homes after that heard that the fire had broken off and had smell suits and seen the effects and in fact some people told us that they heard exploding munitions. exploding nearby or near their homes or within earshot at
12:05 pm
least these are the munitions that have been left during the second world war and later because after the second world war until the eighty's there were thousands of russian troops stationed in this area they also have initials their pows in this area and they also left some of that i mean initially lying around in the forests so it's a very dangerous situation only the proper roads the reds that have been struck through the forest have actually been cleared of mines so the firefighters cannot really go to the source of the flames kind of go into the forest and a lot depends on how well the helicopters that are being used able to actually extinguish the flames and have the parties being able to say when do you find fighting operations will make it possible for people to return to their homes. now they haven't been able to say there is some indication that some of the people involved hope that they will be able to return today but as i say that's still very unclear and at the moment the people are being informed by the prime minister and by the local mayor about the situation at the moment i suspect that they will not
12:06 pm
be able to return immediately because it's not quite clear how the weather's going to develop and whether the weather is actually going to help or stingers the fire if it starts raining or whether it's going to fan the flames again if those strong winds start coming up so it's very unclear how it's going to develop certainly the fire is going to end up burning for quite a long time still it's a very large area it's the largest fire in this region that has ever been experienced it will take days probably and possibly even weeks before the fire is completely under control so still very much a developing story hans brown thank you very much for being us up to date on the fire is raging not far from the german capital of berlin. pope francis is due to make his first papal visit to ireland in nearly forty years to speak and he's expected to grow much smaller numbers than turned out to greet john paul the second decades ago as he struggles to ring that in the great

confidence in the church damning new revelations about current and past sex abuse in the u.s. chile and australia have gotten to question the leadership of bishops and cardinals accused off protecting predator trees the vatican is facing growing pressure from catholics to cooperate with criminal investigative. joining me now is religious affairs correspondent martin welcome martin this so much of outrage with these latest new revelations which have come out about child abuse and tended to priests what kind of perception do you think the pope is going to get an island i think there is a mixed reception understandably i mean there is a part of a population that is still very much committed a large part of the population that is still very much committed to the catholic church a couple of churches still a massive presence through the country but at the very same time it's also true that partly i think because of the scandals of the sexual abuse revelations or last
12:08 pm
ten years or so there's been a pretty systematic abandonment of the catholic church and this is very much reflected in newspapers and sort of public opinion one can see that you know there is much more of a polarization where s. and ninety's when you nine when john paul visited ireland the situation the demographic the religious demographics of the country were quite different the expectation is of course on the pope to see if anything will be said concerning protocol and policies of the bout to go see because this is a huge cause and growing cotton pressure on the catholic church to take concrete action we talked to in fact an activist who was working for an organization to end abuse by the k.g.b. let's take a listen to what he had to say fust the church is the largest global institution and i'm sad to sign one having been brought up a catholic that it is to use a business term it's the market leader in criminality in this particular area and i

think pope francis has the five years and it's time he did something concrete not just it's you need him out apologies. so we saw that martin i mean a colorful action is what people want at the moment and you see any action it's not known i mean there's been a change in tone so the letter that was you should only a couple of days ago by the pope's office by the pope himself refers to some of these episodes i mean sexual abuse no longer s. just a sin but no less criminal actions which goes to say that there seems to be at least a gesture that something will be done in terms of national authorities at the very same time what is true is that this pope has been occupying his position for now six years five almost six in there's been endless talk about both ciro tolerance to farther abuses and of putting in place particular protocols and boluses to deal not just with abuse but with the cover up one of the things that we saw coming out of

the pennsylvania grand jury. report is a matter of fact over this five or six years this kind of crimes continue to take place until i didn't is traditionally a catholic they have been social changes there in contradiction to religious and traditions for example legalization of abortion which is one recognizing gay marriage so i don't seems to be at a crossroads how do you think the pope is going to navigate this briefly if you can not and i think this is this is sort of a situation for the catholic church pretty much everywhere which is that society has moved away and although would preserve some of the values that the catholic church instills on its communities at the very same time in to stay in positions concerning divorce gay marriage artificial insemination sexual morality that stray from the church station it is no longer viable for the church simply to take the high road and say we just are we are or you know or without us for the church should remain relevant politically this pope knows very well that he has to

as a new generation is to ensure that we not only bring their party back together which has been bruised and battered this week. but that was to ensure we bring the parliament back together. that we can continue to work to ensure that our country stays close together. i'm joined now from sydney by journalist and roger may not is keeping track of those developments i want to as we heard scott morrison says he wants to unite the party but how difficult will it be as he said it's been a tough and bruising and bad week for the party when i look to the point he's absolutely right it's been a week about political chaos and whether or not it will end with the election of scott morrison remains to be seen he faces a big struggle to unite the liberal party which has been riven you know by
12:14 pm
concerns that energy prices and countless other issues in recent months and indeed the opinion polls were really done for of the liberal party coalition government earlier this week and that's what in many ways prompted this leadership spill earlier on today. scott morrison tried to do his best to. inspire the of the nation and his press conference earlier on today he delivered a rallying call to the middle australia asking for people to have a good one of the dignity of work and to build a stronger australia although exactly how he intends to i'm not quite sure and i'm sure what a mad can turn will have to say about these developments this week it's been of a difficult political week for him. or it's been a terrible week that he lost his job was to hard and things went from bad to worse
12:15 pm
from monday almost he'd try to hang on but in the end today he had to give in to a leadership ballot and he said it wouldn't take part of the ballot leaving the contest open to three other people including scott morrison peter dunne who was his main rival and julie bishop who's the other foreign minister here he was clearly very very hurt by what could have been done to him really through this leadership ballot and he couldn't resist delivering a parting shot to those who don't undermine him over the past few weeks particularly peter duff who is his basically his notices mr turnbull branded him a ponens in the liberal party as wreckers who created absolute chaos and then he claimed to be a determined insurgency. to bring not only his government but his prime ministership. right right i mean out in sydney thank you very much having us

a balancing act that the bundesliga must achieve in the upcoming season. away from this forum this weekend at the most a moscow will host a huge festival to celebrate the ninetieth anniversary of gorky park named after the ride to maxim gokey it's one of the russian capitals most iconic landmarks in recent years has undergone a major facelift and won over a new generation of muscovites specially it seems those in love. for alexander valley area there's no better place in all of moscow even in the rain. corky park is in the center of the russian capital and it's at the heart of countless stories this is not what you are proposed to here when we were skating or thought. oh that's right i forgot to look. up that.

gorky central park of culture and leisure as it's officially known has just turned ninety. but. the park has twenty six million visitors every year and has long become part of the fabric of people's lives here in moscow. classic as. it's not slate classic for a date to meet here for a war look at the swans not the men imagine that everyone is loyalist lamisil move that they can see disappointed they aren't. have a hot dog and go to sleep on your own words it's quite critical about just the dismount i used when i was a kid i used to tears when it was my mother not only one but took a dip in the fountain we put our feet in the water it was fun movie still at the museum in the park shows how it all began in one nine hundred twenty eight corky park quickly became known around the world as a symbol of socialism it was part of the soviet drive to create a new athletic ideal even a new man does most of the blue it will read it when you go to the park was founded

12:22 pm
rolling there not to us i'm rita official figures out today show that germany's governments from the national to the local level recorded a surplus of more than forty eight billion euros in the first half of this year and that produced a surplus of two point nine percent it's also the country's biggest surplus ever recorded in a hof year amid a very slight rise in spending but the wide difference between income and spend is likely to lead to new calls for increased public investment and seems like schools and infrastructure trading partners especially the united states have been critical of german plus low public spending keeps wages and prices down and it makes german exports more competitive than others. that's discussed that now is done you're cool but the front for the stock exchange down the aisle germany and it's close that is a never ending love story isn't it time to spend some money.
12:23 pm
yeah exactly you just made a very good point talking to our retail there that the money is actually not coming to the individual that's something that many are criticizing that there's a big surplus is also there because a very high taxes germans are paying taxes here in germany are way higher compared for example to the united states and yes there is also the call that now investment should be made regarding infrastructure for example and not just talking about infrastructure on german rolls but also for example regarding. infrastructure here in germany and many areas here mostly rural areas in germany there is a way behind compared to other countries all right when it comes to money and how to spend it there's also a big do across the atlantic i'll be back with you in just a moment daniel because central bankers from around the world coming together in jackson hole wyoming for their annual economic retreat organized by the federal reserve and investors are especially awaiting saturday's keynote address from fred

if it's a chairman powell it'll be his first chance to comment publicly on recent criticism from the white house residence to say he was unhappy with the fed's plan to hike interest rates and i was a break with the tradition that presidents do not comment on the fed's decisions powells remarks in jackson hole will also be examined for any clues as to whether. the trade policies will hurt the u.s. economy. and while all of this is happening across the atlantic in frankfurt can certainly tell us whether the jackson role plays jackson hole plays a role in europe. yeah there are this is a topic here among investors on the trading floor of the side of course still the on going to trade a conflict investors will be monitoring very closely if they're going to be more interest rate hikes coming up during this year or during the next month most of the investors are pretty sure that because of the rather good development off the

economy in the united states we might see between three or four more interest rate hikes in the upcoming nine or twelve months something you just mentioned donald trump is not in favor of all he did is no go scenario basically a couple of days ago criticizing the fed even though the fat is supposed to be completely independent. in frankfurt thank you so much for this. meanwhile u.s. sanctions against russia appear to be biting the ruble has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar in two years and now in a bid to stabilize the foreign currency russia's central bank says it will stop buying foreign currency until the end of september. turbulent day for the ruble as it plunged to a two year low against the dollar then came the announcement from the central bank and calm was restored temporarily at least analysts say there's an easy explanation
12:26 pm
for the volatility this is all related to the threat of sanctions far more more sanctions coming from the u.s. the market is full of rumors as to what may or may not be coming next out of the u.s. congress and that's creating a lot of nervousness and volatility in the room or at the ruble earlier this week the u.s. imposed sanctions on two russian shipping companies accused of trading oil with north korea and russia's alleged involvement in the. boys in a former spy said gay script all seen here on the right could result in a new far reaching set of sanctions on the streets of moscow the locals don't appear too fazed by the rubles declining value. could give most of my savings are in rubles so it doesn't matter that much to me my clients pay me in rubles too so i haven't suffered losses there either the only thing which worries me is that they say prices will be growing well let's see you do fly before

portugal for animal rights you know what other bit. better. but wait and see wasn't a strategy the central bank was willing to risk the rubles weaknesses come despite an increase in oil prices and a general improvement in the russian economy a fresh set of u.s. sanctions could swiftly undo those games. and here's a reminder of the top story we're following for you. six hundred people have been evacuated from a wildfire. has taken hold of a woodland around fifty kilometers southwest of the city efforts to fight of encountered by old munitions from baltimore to bury in the forest. just the news thanks for. having.
