extreme left m k l p party which is classified as an illegal terrorist organization in turkey tolu was released from prison in december of last year but a travel ban prevented her from leaving the country until now. over more on this story i'm joined in the studio by debbie a sadist serdar she's the foreign policy editor and former head of w. turkish news data thanks for being here so ms allen told the made a statement to the press actually as soon as she arrived at the airport you listened to that what was your impression of her what she looked very composed of course she's happy to be back home in germany she did get a little bit emotional of course when she was talking about her son because at the first two months while she was in prison she did not know what was happening with her son so of course that was a very emotional moment for her she said she's in good health and she also looked like that so on the general she looked very very composed and happy just to be back

home well the german government had long been seeking her release but without any success so why exactly was this travel ban lifted now well i think a lot of things are very connected to each other right now turkey is going through a serious economy crisis and at the same time turkey is having a lot of problems with the united states and the crisis between turkey and us does not seem to be deescalating. and turkey will present actually knows that he cannot fight at all fronts at the same time and at the end of september there is a state visit of president on his coming to berlin and prior to that the german foreign minister is going to turkey apparently turkey is trying to make its relations all the better with germany and with the european union so this seems like one of the steps that turkey is taking to make those relationships a little bit better before these diplomatic meetings take place well. this is of
4:04 pm
course not the end of the journey for tolu she may be back in germany now but in fact she is due to appear at a hearing in turkey in mid october what is she likely to do now when she said she would go back for this trial however we don't know what will happen if she does go back it could be that she could be arrested again it could be things are normal she could be tried outside of a turkish prison but we do know we don't know what to expect any more so if she decides to go she will be taking a huge risk going back to turkey even though she does not have a travel ban to enter turkey right now. we will have to see if she will go back or not while top of course is not the only journalist who is arrested in turkey on terrorism charges her husband also is facing similar charges he unlike tolu does not have german citizenship he's a turkish citizen and he's still not allowed to leave the country. what does
4:05 pm
citizenship what kind of world does that is your place in fact and how journalists in turkey are being treated well yes there are more than one hundred forty journalists still in prison. husband is still in turkey of course that makes the situation difficult for her which is only understandable and of course if you have a german citizenship then the german government can step in but it takes time as we've seen in the case of as we've seen in the case of and also michel the total so it does take time for german government to help activists or journalists get out of the country there are still seven german citizens being politically charged in turkey so it is very difficult for journalists and anyone actually who is opposing the government currently. is that is the dar the foreign policy editor and former head of d.w. turkish news thank you very much indeed for all of your insights thank you for having me. now tributes are flooding in for u.s.
