needs to. take on more responsibility and forge stronger european alliances including in matters pertaining to its military either concept enough here's part of what the chancellor said during her interview the. democracy is more than just someone winning good majority democracy also means protecting minorities freedom of the prince the ability to assemble freely and independent cool. the no indeed dependents of the country's institutions is no longer preserved the democracy itself is no longer complete. all right dan some analysis on the german chancellor's interview i'm joined in the studio by political correspondent came fraidy kate good to see you so kind of interesting to hear the chancellor stressing basic democratic principles why was she talking about this well this really has come off the back of a couple of events recently the first of all was when she talked about the

independent judiciary and the importance of them there's been a couple of cases where how seriously the decisions made by these courts has been brought into question recently you might remember most the most high profile case ready was that of the reported bodyguard of asama bin laden when he was actually deported back to tunisia even though a local administration caught at administration of court had ruled that he shouldn't be and on top of that you also have the question of the freedom of press that's also being discussed again in the media here in germany at the moment and that came off the back of an event at a piggy to rally by the far right movement where the t.v. crew was actually questioned by the police after a complaint had been made by a demonstrator and it was later found that the press haven't actually been breaking any laws at all. sorry these are the big kind of questions that need to be

addressed still and are continuing to be during by like merkel under the top politicians at the moment well the other issue addressed during this interview was climate and michael was asked whether she still viewed herself as the climate chancellor how did she respond to that though she did say of course we remember as well that once upon a time she was the environment minister and she said that this was a difficult task but that germany and she still have a responsibility to ensure that germany keeps to its goals and but of course is no secret the german government has already admitted it won't be reaching its twenty twenty climate goals so instead it's now looking forward to reach in those twenty thirty goals but at the same time she did reject a reduced recent call from the e.u. commission instead of only forty percent but merkel said she was much more in favor of sticking to the goals that germany already has and yet another topic that featured in this interview was the dispute with america's governing coalition on
