debbie is the chief political correspondent linda crane is on the story for us good morning melinda there we know anything more about the fight that led to this killing about the suspects in custody. we don't have more confirmed details from the police themselves but german media are reporting that there was a knife fight in the night from saturday to sunday and that directly following the incident reports appeared on far right social media sites saying that the perpetrator of the attack appeared to be a group or a couple of migrants of the far right sites referred to as southern descent that could be southern europeans but of course possibly also northern africans or others and that the victim of the attack had been a german with russian roots and apparently after those reports appeared they were shared many times and then there were appeals also on social media for people to

gather and protest this incident and protest the presence of migrants and that in fact did lead to hundreds of people taking to the streets of candidates as you reported just now and in fact so many that the police were at least initially overpowered and these individuals who were protesting did also then at least verbal ie attack individuals whom they believed to be migrants was a spontaneous were were there movements involved in organizing the people who showed up incumbents no it absolutely was not spontaneous in the sense of a sort of. unguided prizing there were absolutely calls on social media and calls by an organization that calls itself chaotic kemet it's a group of football fans what are known as ultras they're known for their extremist action sometimes in this stadium but sometimes outside and they are often

associated with far right groups ok you know eastern germany where this took place has been in the headlines recently. right wing extremism house the situation in eastern germany different from other parts of the country not just recently brian in fact if we think back to two thousand and fourteen this is the state the state of saxony where candidates is located but also dres down where there were other recent incidents this is the state that gave birth to the xena phobic movement known as piggy as you remember some to hundred thousand people assembled in the streets of braised in two thousand and fourteen to protest migration and this is also the state that is seen. as the center of the party the far right party here in germany in last year's federal election the a.f.d. actually was the strongest party in the state and with state elections coming up

many people are predicting that it will have a very strong showing again and you know the roots of this they go back absolutely to the fact that this was part of eastern germany this particular state where parts of it were sometimes referred to as the valley of the ignorant because west german media which reach some parts of eastern germany didn't reach this particular region and many people call into question the degree to which democratic socialization really took root in this region following the fall of the berlin wall so yes it's been almost thirty years since that wall fell but the fact is there still seems to be fertile ground in this particular region for what amounts to authoritarian thanking. the crane on the story three floors and comments thanks very much. now for a look at some of the other stories making the news at this hour german chancellor all american was warning against the damaging of fundamental democratic

a living in germany an increase of twelve percent on last year. this is due to the increase in migration from countries where female genital mutilation is particularly prevalent among the german this means countries like somalia eritrea and iraq. in a statement germany's family and women's ministry described female genital mutilation as a human rights violation during this legislative period the ministry also plans on working more closely with germany's youth welfare offices but when it comes to some parents taking that young daughters back to their home country for a so-called vacation circumcision there's very little that all thora to all the german government. volunteers and teaches therefore play a huge role the. only way to really gauge what's going on is to have a vigilant society particularly means people who work in close contact with

8:13 am
about what's happened to them what are the risks for them of talking. exactly right there is a lot of pressure when they come here. within their communities and but also this is why having spoken to various volunteer groups over the past couple of weeks they said it's so important that there's a big effort to push integration here in germany particularly of these women because they are then more likely to speak out the more that they integrated into german society and they have german friends and they feel more comfortable there was one lady that i spoke to she's lived down in munich and so than germany now for a couple of decades and she said it wasn't actually until she had quite an open conversation one day with one of her female friends that she found out that this simply wasn't normal and she was twenty years old at the time and of course there are many complications as a result of this and in the meantime then if they do speak out they can be receiving psychological support and also medical help for the physical effects you know one of the reasons why there's been an increase and of g.m.
8:14 am
here in germany we've seen a twelve percent increase your on your current exactly i mean over the past since two thousand and fourteen the increases being here two thousand and four sorry if you look at the numbers back then it was about twenty four thousand when now looking at about sixty five thousand women in the labor and this is largely come off the back of the increase of migrants coming to germany from the countries why this is often carried out so that's kind of made northern off african states and also parts of iraq and yemen and that's good because that's more women coming from there they've had this procedure they've been subjected to this procedure in their youth and are coming here. what's being done right now to clamp down and or at least curtail its level violence against women well there are a lot of support groups lobby groups and the government has said the family ministry said to us they are planning during this legislative period to work more
8:15 am
closely with these gray. and of course one of the things that these support groups are asking for is more financing at the moment a lot of like also this reconstructions and that is funded purely by donations but of course there is a lot to be done but at the same time while authorities can now take passports away from parents for example who they suspect of taking their children back to their home country to have this procedure carried out on them at the same time it is difficult to exactly spot who they are and then you also run the risk of suspects in innocent families and so it's difficult to not tar everyone with the same brush they might just be going back on holiday to the to their home country ok so there is a role for the government and a big role for n.g.o.s as well thanks so much for looking into the story for us to bring the four story. well pope francis has wrapped up his visit to ireland
8:16 am
a visit largely overshadowed by new revelations about the sexual abuse within the catholic church and although the pope addressed the abuse and asked for forgiveness the scandal is far from over a former paper boy to the u.s. is now calling for pope francis to resign saying he covered up sex abuse carried out by ex cardinal theodore mccarrick the allegations are detailed in an eleven page letter the pope has so for not commented on the clips. for forgiveness the phrase pope francis repeated again and again as he celebrated mass before half a million people in dublin phoenix park. we forgive the abuses in ireland the abuse of power of conscience and the sexual abuse by church officials in positions of responsibility. it was the

biggest event in ireland since the last papal visit nearly forty years ago a collective celebration but one overshadowed by the sex abuse scandals rocking the catholic church in ireland and around the world. the mood was somber survivors remembered victims of clerical abuse hundreds of them children. eight survivors met the pope among them recall and everyone spoke very very frankly and. with great care. they wanted. some questions and i. was there and i got the opportunity to put them to him face to face. the protesters dismissed the pope's words of regret. it was an empty apology it's not good enough and what we want is criminal prosecution.

and now from the dignified and sometimes somber sport of chess comes a world championship for a select few as in a select few who are willing to play the game underwater in a long and poor weekend in august players dive beneath the surface to play without with magnetic pieces but without any breathing apparatus and once they go fully under they have to complete their move before coming up for air in the eventual winner or an orange to intimidate or at least one distract his opponents. well no distractions in the u.s. a looks like a new nafta deal could be in sight brian progress so far has been grueling the slow but u.s. and mexican trade negotiators are reportedly close to squaring away by law for bilateral differences to update the north american free trade agreement in response to the mexican peso is gave me gaining nearly one percent this morning this is
8:22 am
agreements between the two countries have been a major obstacle to renegotiate the deal which also includes canada now u.s. president trump has been a harsh critic of nafta using mexico using it to take away jobs from americans. top trade negotiator has also expressed optimism analysts say a new nafta year could reduce the risk of a global trade war talks are set to resume on monday. the markets have also welcomed the u.s. federal reserve chairman defends his grad plans to gradually raise interest rates most asian stocks are up after the closely watched meeting of central bankers at jackson hole wyoming. signaled that he will continue raising rates if the u.s. economy remains robust to keep inflation in check that's despite the president recent criticism of higher borrowing costs paul also said that the fed needs to be
8:23 am
balancing maximizing employment with keeping prices stable. not for some more analysis let's bring in your kramer he's chief economist. to the show this morning the fed is staying true to its course in times of increased political pressure on the central bank do you see that as a good sign. well this was anyway my expectations because first of all. it is a longstanding history that in the united states the president does not make any comment. on the policy of the federal reserve and five was clear that the fed chairman paul would not mention or react to any of this criticism explicitly of the u.s. president trump but the fed or the fed of the u.s. the chairman of the federal reserve board sent the same message as before they will continue to gradually raise interest rates september rate hike seems to be
8:24 am
a done deal probably also december and next year's cons are likely to switch off the auto pilot and as the federal reserve interest rate has come closer to three percent right now how important is this mindset of not shooting back of not bowing to political pressure. as i said before i had not expected. that he gives into the political pressure from from washington this is not the style he did the best he could do that means simply continue with his message and this was exactly what the fed chairman delivered now the same time the u.s. and mexico seem to be closing in on striking a fresh trade deal one of the interesting issues or such a deal would be to see how much ground the trump administration is actually willing to give.
8:25 am
anyway expect that in the end we get an agreement because you have to see that u.s. companies especially u.s. car companies have invested billions of u.s. dollars in mexico and i think they managed to make president trump clear that they don't want to write off this huge investments done by u.s. companies in mexico and therefore that's a strong economic incentive to come to an agreement and i expect us to deal too much very soon this does not mean that mr trump will also come to an agreement with china china is a geopolitical contender and china for many many years has treated you as foreign companies as a whole unfairly and they'll fall i think there's still a huge risk that in the end president trump would put tariffs on all imports from china and europe briefly how important for global trade would be a renegotiate nafta deal. i think this is
8:26 am
a very important paulton signal which also supports my view that there will in the end be an agreement between the united states and the european union that means we we are not seeing a global trade war but we are seeing a trade wall between the united states and china this is bad but better than it will be a trade war. chief economist at comerica park thank you for your insight. and here's some good news for all of those of you would appreciate a good chardonnay or a good bordeaux this year's grape harvest in france will be twenty five percent bigger than last year even as the drought wreaks havoc on wheat and my the great vine roots reach down many meters where there is still moisture in the soil and the second largest wind producer in the world after italy and wine makers will produce food east. six million hector leaders this year enough to fill nearly two thousand
