testers clashed with police and counter protesters. and we are monitoring that situation for you here on news my name is sarah kelly don't forget we will have another news update for you that will be at the top of the hour but in the meantime aims to ban plastic bags to find out what life could be like without plastic we will look at one place that has already outlawed that monica jones has that story and a whole lot more coming up in just a few minutes i'm sorry kelly it's all. being fun being told. his work god is for turning up. the munchies and figuring. beethoven to bomb the twenty. cities cremations interests his brand the stink of colorado that type

of the function of. look what do we really know about the man behind the dark shades what motivates him how does he think and feel good moments in the life of a great fashion designer the son of a song smile and. start september ninth w. it's now up to canada as the u.s. and mexico seal a new trade deal the other partner in the trade pact nor formally known as nafta is tight lipped about whether it will sign on. also on the program india's aviation market is booming but tough competition puts domestic airlines under pressure. and plastic bags can be terrible for the environment and some countries have taken the
7:17 pm
lead in banning them but it might not be the countries you think about. welcome to do business the u.s. hopes to find common ground on trade with canada after reaching a preliminary agreement with mexico still u.s. president suggested yesterday he could leave also out of a final deal to overhaul the north american free trade agreement if the two sides fail to reach a compromise he is pressing canada to accept new terms for the way car imports are taxed canada snuff to negotiate a foreign minister christine freeland is due in washington today to discuss changes to the trade treaty after cutting short a trip to europe. well it's clearly it's a very busy u.s. president there especially when it comes to trade and where does that leave the u.s. economy that's something i would like to ask you frank. for the tab the president of the american chamber of commerce here in germany as we know it. is it i mean
7:18 pm
he's all about america. overhauling trade deals with with china with the e.u. nafta of course does america benefit from it well you pointed out a president is very focused on trade as really the centerpiece of most of what he's trying to accomplish he has some views on trade that are not necessarily shared by mainstream economists and. many other sectors of the business world however. certainly we welcome his initiatives to go and look at things that are thirty years old like nafta is and say let's modernize it's a make sense for today's world one that treaty was signed back and i believe nineteen ninety four whatever there was no internet to many of the things that we take for granted today don't exist so from their point of view the american chamber welcomes any efforts that will strengthen trade between countries at the same time
7:19 pm
we firmly believe that no country nowadays can be strong on its own strength comes from him in alliances and free trade among countries that will benefit us like that they the only consistency there seems to be with the trump administration is that it is somewhat inconsistent which can throw traditional like the e.u. like germany somewhat off guard and we do have a trade dispute between the u.s. and the e.u. . how is that affecting the economy in america does it go stronger or do you see first signs of perhaps an impact that could be negative well you certainly have to depend on the sector right obviously farmers are suffering immensely and i believe i read this morning that there's going to be a farm aid package of over seven billion dollars given to them to help them for the losses they're suffering suffering due to the trade dispute with china. you have at
7:20 pm
the same time and you have the enormous uplift of the tax reform so you have a lot of money that's come into the economy that's certainly positive i do believe though that if we continue down the path we're on we will see difficulties in many different industries and those will lead to problems economic problems that will dampen growth because i believe i mean i'm jim conducted a survey among as it was a german business and i think they're not so keen on investing in the us anymore that's a big piece of it as anyone who's in business knows that one of the key things you want is. plan ability you want to be able to say if i'm going to build my plant here i'm going to run it for the next twenty years without major changes to my business model that's suffering right now and i was at the bunch after the conference this morning here in berlin and in preparation for that we did a survey of our members last week in it shows very clearly our members want to love america it's the most important market for them but the german in the american
7:21 pm
members are very firm in that however they're very concerned about what's going on and a certain percentage of them have said we're holding back on investments in the u.s. until we get a little more clarity on what's happening and that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy right or people hold back that will lead to less construction jobs less other services be needed and that is very dangerous so the impact of the current policies trade policies conducted by the u.s. could be late a little larry that i'm jump resident here in germany thank you so much for your time it's a pleasure and to india now the southeast asian subcontinent is expected to be the world's third largest aviation market by twenty twenty five and naturally it's a highly competitive market especially for domestic airlines reasons the indian rupee has declined around ten percent against the u.s. dollar since the beginning of the year at the same time fuel costs have been rising
7:22 pm
also to stay competitive local budget carriers continue to slash f.a.'s and as a result many have posted losses this year. now for more on the indian aviation market let's cross over now to our correspondent. in delhi she's good to have you with us just tell me what role does the ad travel industry play in that interim or economic master plan make in india. has been something that prime minister modi has focused on a fair bit you know he unveiled a plan last year where he looked to bring millions more indians largely in smaller cities and small towns into the aviation market getting millions more writing commercial air airplanes and as part of that plan it was really a focused on a on economic feeling economic growth through refurbishing old colonial era strips and building new airports in some of these smaller towns and cities as well but
7:23 pm
what we've seen is that there's been a slow pace at sort of rolling out this this plan a lot of infrastructure issues which have meant that they're way behind on on what they wanted to do in that regard and and even with a lot of existing airlines at existing airports getting new routes approved many of those routes were approved by the government but airlines are actually struggling to to get them into operation because of existing logjams at these airports finding places simply to land their planes at some of the bigger airports like delhi and mumbai so certainly there's still a lot of issues despite it being a focus. a reporting from delhi now with bricks it still not quite clarified britain is certainly looking for new partners and they're also looking for markets in africa. we will see in just a moment the british prime minister to resign may on her first official visit to
7:24 pm
the continent in capetown between some rhythmical moves may said that she wanted britain to become the g seven is biggest investor in africa overtaking the united states a pledge around four and a half billion euros by twenty twenty two may also said britain would work with african nations to tackle insecurity and migration by creating jobs in south africa the prime minister will head to nigeria to kenya. for up to four hundred years that's how long it takes for an ordinary piece of plastic to decompose the amount of plastic waste particular in our oceans is go growing problem many countries have taken a stance against the use of plastic bags but few have been as rigorous as kenya take a look. at the country market in western ny robie is a popular shopping venue it offers nearly everything but no plastic bags which were banned a year ago shoppers can buy colorful reusable bags at each stand instead but they're ten times as expensive about twenty cents each that's why many people bring their
7:25 pm
own bags along they've adapted to the change but not everybody agrees with the band including martin and interview sales. even though the plan is to help the environment it's bad for my business. i used to sell my yams in plastic bags so they would stay fresh longer. now they dry out quickly like you know i get back but jason don't think it's stained yet. nearby there are piles of discarded plastic bags. people have simply toss them here illegally. nevertheless officials from kenya's environmental authorities say the pack ban has been a great success if your bags are being discarded in public places and fewer ending up in fishman's net. at the beginning it was a challenge. continue to pack things but we were able to demonstrate over time now
7:26 pm
over the months that it is possible to carry on your own carry on business and activities without it and therefore change of behavior that. that just means people have had to do. that has been positive. violators face a fine of thirty two thousand euros up to four years in prison so far nobody has been jailed but around a hundred people have been fined. one of the most vocal critics of the ban is the kenya association of manufacturers chairman one hundred good guys the head of a company that makes product labels for the african market he says one hundred seventy companies producing plastic has shut down triggering the loss of sixty thousand jobs the frame frame given was of six months to make investment decisions and for people to reallocate resources and you're not given to. investors
7:27 pm
face on certainty and this causes tremendous aftershocks for the manufacturers when a very short time span is given for why our despite the criticism environment management authority hopes that kenya sets an example for its neighbors as well this countries beyond africa. for the rest of the even. humphry we'll bring you up to date in the meantime check out our website a follow us on twitter and facebook for more. thanks for watching. wow. wow. wow.
