this is deja vu news coming to you live from berlin calling time on a long running dispute to the european union is set to end the practice of putting their clocks forward and back in summer and winter the e.u. says it's responding to the will of the people and we look at the pros and cons of scrapping daylight savings time also coming up. up a rally by the far right in the eastern german town of chemists passes off peacefully despite why months earlier in the week the situation remains tense with groups from both the right and left preparing to take to the streets again tomorrow
3:01 pm
and. it's time to say goodbye friends around the world prepare to bid their final farewells to the queen of soul aretha franklin she'll be laid to rest in detroit later today . i'm terry martin thanks for joining us the days of changing the clocks backwards and forwards here in europe could be numbered the european commission is today proposing an end to the switch between summer and winter time across the e.u. the decision comes after an online poll found that a majority of those responding want to get rid of the one hour change to winter time. the online survey was the largest in the use history four point six million europeans to. part by far the largest number of those were german in total eighty
3:02 pm
percent said they were in favor of getting rid of what's known as daylight savings time. so let's have a listen to what people are saying about the decision to scrap the switch from summer time when a time most of those surveyed may have voted to abolish daylight savings time but as we report opinion is divided. i think it's great switching to daylight savings time it works so i think it's a good idea good idea i would keep the time the same all year round we need as much even tempered this in this world as we can possibly get as if in the city well i think it's not so bad one out doesn't make such a big difference if it really does save energy. and i think it should be the same time all year round that would be best for everyone because then you won't have to bother adjusting clocks i also think that change doesn't make much sense anymore
3:03 pm
it's i believed i would you prefer the summertime when. i would prefer summertime in the evenings there's so much to do and when it's still light then it's much better these the prison it even i would hate the winter time but if not maybe winter time in summer it's not easy to go to bed when it's still light outside. except those who i voted to get rid of the time change but face that some a time. i wouldn't notice any difference so you can do what you want i don't really care. some opinions from the streets switching or not till the daylight savings time off for more let's bring in. correspondent in brussels it seems most people in europe don't watch the time changing in winter and summer time changes been around for decades is the e.u. though really ready to change the way people keep time on the basis of a single online survey. terry i think what we should make clear at this point that it's not all based on this one solve a it's it's a longer process and it's been
3:04 pm
a. until the you reach the public consultation and before they did that they they were sent over a year's requests from citizens for requests from a member state the latest being finland this year that was pointing to health risks for particularly young citizens and elderly population of this constant life change particularly in the north of europe and then of course from the european parliament and as a consequence now we have this saudi so how soon could europe stop switching between winter and summer time when can we see this implemented. what happens now is the that the commission will make a proposal that will be sent to the european parliament and european lawmakers are expected to agree since they made a request to the commission to make this this change and then we'll go to member states that's the interesting part they will have to decide so we have about two months left until we have to change again into winter time so i don't think they
3:05 pm
will meet this deadline but still the president of the european commission juncker is very confident that a change will come eventually. poland now it's up to the number of states and the european parliament to take action the european parliament has been heading in this direction for years anyway it will happen there's no sense in asking people and once they respond disregarding their response behaving as if it weren't put on records of little people one it will do it for muslims. now splitting the clocks back twice back and forth twice a year is introduced in europe to make more efficient use of daylight and to save energy at least those were the arguments is this thinking out of date. put in a not so that's exactly what it is it was introduced in the one nine hundred eighty s. where the idea was we have an extra hour of daylight and we safe and our all for electric light but it turned out that was never the case that never energy was safe because
3:06 pm
in. early in the year there was more heating so that's because energy costs as well and today with ds that questions is pointless so when it when it comes to the scientific proof the advantages that the sum of time would bring if they would decide to keep the summertime they would stick we would have those extra hours of daylight for instance for a late summer barbecue that's something i personally would profit from join you for that. corresponding mass is there in in brussels now to some of the other stories making news around the world german chancellor angela merkel has wrapped up a three day africa visit in nigeria she was received by president mohamed who bihari enough for a trip which also took in ghana and senegal focused on strengthening economic development and containing migration from the region. in australian filmmaker who

flew a drone over an opposition party rally in cambodia has been jailed for six years james ricketson was arrested last june and charged with espionage as the rest came amid a wider crackdown on freedom of expression by prime minister when sens government. about a thousand farai protesters have staged another demonstration in the eastern german city of chemists police say the rally was tense but not threatening or marked by violence like a protest earlier this week at a nearby venue politicians met with local residents some of them saying officials are out of touch. get lost they chant. demonstrators are out in force again in chemnitz they're protesting against the town hall meeting with saxony state premier but some in this east german city want to engage with him. it's mostly in foreign small i want to talk to him
3:08 pm
about my feeling that many politicians don't know anything about their citizens anymore and don't know what's going on i saw a report that he was shocked by what's happening here but how can that be if he is our state premier so management is the president for them and. the fatal stabbing of a german citizen over the weekend sparked violent anti immigration protests and what appeared to be vigilante attacks on people believed to be foreigners the authorities are also investigating several protesters for making the hitler salute . then an arrest warrant was late apparently by a law enforcement officer the man has since been suspended from judy a federal state in crisis the leader in sex and pleading to his citizens to be courageous. and they should learn what countries are we want to live in.

a lot of citizens in germany who say they don't identify with the far right but they're simply concerned about migrant violence do they have a point that is the big challenge for the politicians these days to walk this tightrope walk they have to address both problems and of course you know refugee crisis in two thousand and fifteen lots of foreigners came to germany they came to places where there was never a big sarah foreigners in the first place so many people are just scared the city is changed there are young male unemployed people in the streets because we don't have an immigration lawyer yet and so many people are just concerned what does this mean for a country statistics show that young males are more prone to violence than other social groups but then if you look at the figures actually the crime rate in germany is at its lowest level for thirty years and actually migrant crime has gone down it went down by twenty three percent from twenty sixteen to twenty seventeen
3:11 pm
so after they saw the influx of foreigners so politicians really have to get this message across or else they'll lose these people before we talk further i just want to bring in a clip here a very famous clip from exactly three years ago today. if you are a guy say quite simply germany is a strong country are approaching us to be that we've achieved so much we can do this. if you know it's not enough. we can do this and whenever we encounter obstacles they will be overcome they will be dealt with on the government will do everything in its power along with the local and regional governments to do precisely that. schaaf and us we can do this chancellor merkel three years ago today an iconic statement from the chancellor there. that's proven her wrong. believe that chemistry is just the latest low point in a string of events where the political debate has shifted it went from
3:12 pm
a welcoming culture in twenty fifteen where they statement was made where the german society showed itself as being a very liberal open mind it was offering to give shelter to all those refugees coming to northern europe and then lots of small incidents started happening and every single migrant crime case was covered extensively by the german media and that also started shifting the debate in favor of the anti immigrant party of the party and so if you've got this shifted debate then uncle americal is losing her narrative lots of small initiatives on the ground saying we felt left alone we didn't know how to counteract this we need more support from the national government and this is something that i believe. government have understood that this is high time that they're showing more support of pro-democracy groups on the ground or else they lose the narrative entirely to the eighth day which is already the strongest opposition party on the national level thank you so much to do are
