over the last few days last week many of them here carrying signs saying refugees while kim so far it's very peaceful the next couple of hours several rival protests to get underway one organized by the anti islam movement and alongside the far right party the a.f.d. so when that starts to get under way in the coming hours there is concern of course that these two sides will meet took place on monday there are a lot of police here on the streets trying to keep the two sides apart trying to keep the peace but there are of course concerns among many here that we could see a repeat of the violence on monday night charlotte so you are describing a city that's clearly divided over this issue what are people around you saying. a number of the people that we've spoken to here at the counter protest say they want to make clear that a lot of the images that are going around the wild from chemists showing a lot of violence on the street does not represent this city they say this is

last public memorial service for late u.s. senator john mccain is due to begin shortly now the motorcade has left the capitol building and stopped at the vietnam veterans memorial before arriving at washington's national cathedral former presidents barack obama and george w. bush are set to deliver you know jews will be laid to rest on sunday at the u.s. naval academy in maryland president donald trump who had a bitter feud with mccain was not invited to attend the statesman died last week aged eighty one after battling brain cancer. well joining me now is tyson barkley is a program director at the aspen institute here in germany and he's also an expert in trans transatlantic relations thank you for joining us thank you so the memorial service is due to start about an hour from now and as we've heard you know former presidents barack obama george w. bush will be there but not. president trump what does this tell us well i mean the

. interesting that the two presidents that defeated him one in the primary one of the general election are both going to be there what it says about mccain's characters that he had a lot of respect for adversaries who didn't see as enemies that he didn't take it personally his relationship with donald trump was very different when trump announces election and twenty fifteen he started with saying that he liked his soldier says troops that weren't captured that that was a sign of of not courage but cowardice and that relationship really never took off from there there was a lot of personal animosity between the two and he wanted to shape this funeral in the way he wanted to have it shaped and so we look at the polar bears for example for the seventh and they definitely include former democrat senators like joe biden for example so mccain seem to be able as you describe him to bridge the gap across party lions is that becoming rarer and us politics today definitely i mean he was a real a kind of class that he made his reputation as a maverick as an independent that doesn't mean he wasn't conservative but he was a conservative but always an independent thinker and he could assess things using

his own independent thought sometimes that brought him up arrears with his party he was also convinced talk i think would call it in terms of foreign policy he had his critics because of that though didn't he say yes of course i mean you know this is a guy who supported the iraq war when it was very contentious in the united states and globally he supported the surge in two thousand and seven when that was also clinton just he also supported we shouldn't forget military intervention in iran but what he always wanted to believe in was the u.s. was primarily a force for good in the world and that those values were not just reflected abroad but also at home which is one of the reasons why he was such a strong. opposition to torture and very quickly tyson if you can what do you think his greatest legacy will be when i think torture is what i mean he spent six years in a p.o.w. camp in vietnam he did a lot to reconcile relations with the vietnamese he did a lot for campaign finance reform and finally being here in germany of course you know he was really the guardian of nato and the transatlantic alliance
