today what is the situation right now. it is just behind me at the moment is a crisis that was organized by the far right party and the anti is movement they are marching in silence they say they say that they want to mourn the victim of the attack that took place on saturday night into sunday that spots a lot of violence not of the protests that you saw on the streets of candidates they also say that they want to warn to pay their respects to other victims they say. migration policy you know what's just happened in the last couple of minutes is that they were two separate process being held by far right movements here in kemet one of them was cooled off was cut short and people that gathered that were told that they could then join they were free were free to join this protest just hid behind you know the reason for that is of course that police are trying to keep the two protest separate trying to keep these two groups under control now though
5:03 pm
they have merged and meanwhile less than a kilometer away there is a counter protest that's going on several hundred people and of course it's up to the police now to try and make sure that the peace is controlled pieces contain between these two groups and we don't see a repeat of a lot of the violence that we saw on monday night so shallow obviously a city that is very clearly divided what have the people you've spoken to said one of the hoping to achieve with these protests. a lot of people here who are attending the far right process they want to make clear that not all of them want to be associated with some of the scenes that we saw on monday night some of the violence some of the alleged attacks on people of the migrant background and of course also the nazi salutes that we saw on the streets here chemist on monday they say that they are consent citizens they're concerned about migration policy since twenty fifteen and they want to make that clear that's not forget that here in the

state of saxony in the state elections last year the a.f.d. party the right wing party came out as the strongest party there are people gathered here who say they have legitimate concerns and they're ordinary citizens wanting to voice them on the other side of course of the council process there are those who say that they don't want just the images of monday night to go around the world they want to make clear that they think refugees are welcome here not just in cabinets but of course in germany as a whole. new correspondent shallow chilled some people in kenya thank you. a public memorial service for the john mccain is underway at the national cathedral in washington a vietnam veteran mccain died last week age eighty one after battling brain cancer among those in attendance are former presidents barack obama and george w. bush president on all truong who had a bitter feud with mccain was not invited to attend. well our correspondent alexandra phenomenas outside washington national cathedral where the service is
5:05 pm
being held and here in studio with me i do have tyson from the aspen institute here in germany thank you both for joining us so alexandra i'd like to begin with you you are obviously at the cathedral and you've been following the service what's been happening so far. quite remarkable speech held by meghan mccain mccain store to a very emotional and a very powerful speech he told she told she would like to reveal who her father really was not only. a war hero or a congressman and senator but also a love. and he shared with the audience her stories about john mccain telling how. he carried her to her bed. with her and then he also told her to get back on the horse after she
5:06 pm
of her horse. and his understanding shaped her character but she also. president in her speech when she said that america there is no need to make america great again because america has always been great all right alexandra we are seeing pictures from inside the cathedral and we did have just a minute ago dr henry kissinger who's also giving a tribute and i'd just like to bring you in tyson obviously we're. hearing a lot of praise in the recent days from mccain's strong principles and independent thought these are things that are coming out strongly but he also did have critics he had numerous critics on both the right and the left i mean if you look at it from the right obviously his is primary critic was president trump himself who you know attack not only his war record which was a personal attack and led to some of that personal animus but also the style of
5:07 pm
politics that he tried to create a bridge building style of politics that looked for alliances on the other side of the aisle on things like torture immigration campaign finance reform on the left he had critics as well you know i mean people will remember many democrats that he was the one who appointed sarah pailin you know as his vice presidential candidate he was also a strong supporter of the iraq war and was seen as many as two hawkish you know he looked at advocated military intervention in iran for example so he had critics on both sides and you did manage to sit in the same tune with him at a time in this u.s. state department right what was your post an impression of john mccain well he was a man of conviction he was irascible he was very passionate about u.s. foreign policy and u.s. leadership in the world when i was at the state department we were looking at one of the hottest phases in the ukraine crisis and he wanted to bring everybody around and huddle around maps and really talk about what was happening on the ground in country he was really worried about ukraine and he saw it as just another.
5:08 pm
you know front line in the spread of democracy the spread of clean governance the spread of you know liberal order beyond the united states' borders and so no country was too remote too far for him to say the u.s. has a role to play as their partner an ally right up like to bring in alexandra now. you know former presidents barack obama and george w. bush are among those who are also expected to give tributes here alexander what does this tell us. well i think that this is very telling that it was john mccain himself who explicitly asked former presidents george w. bush and barack obama to deliver at his funeral although he was not close to any open to them. asking them to speak here but both
5:09 pm
men who actually dashed his dreams of the white house is very telling and we can it's you that it was supposed to send a message to mccain's fellow republicans but also to democrats and basically to all americans a message of how important it is to cross. across the aisle across party lines how important it is to put country over party because that is something that mccain believed it's the best way of serving us interests and yet beyond this skill in spite of these skills tyson he somehow managed to fail on his two bids for the presidency where did he go wrong well you know he had been in politics for a long time and he came you know rose to the top of the pentagon's of politics twice and you know one could say to some extent he was a little bit ahead of his time at times for good or for worse for the first time he
5:10 pm
was kind of seen as a maverick a clean governance you know from the hip kind of independent that really inspired people and really brought him as an insurgent candidate against the establishment candidate george w. bush but maybe it was just a little early for that kind of spirit and maybe we could say that barack obama brought that spirit into the white house one point two thousand and eight in two thousand and eight when he made his second run where he did get the nomination you know he was seen as kind of somebody who was very interested in iraq engagement somebody very interested in the u.s. role in the global war on terror but there was a lot of fatigue from that period the bush period and then you know again getting back to this being. a little bit of ahead of his time he did pick. against his instincts you know he's mentioned towards the end that he preferred he wishes he would have picked joe lieberman but sarah palin was let's say the four runner for what the republican party has become joe lieberman who in fact did give a tribute just before dr henry kissinger here but alexander i'd like to come back
5:11 pm
to you because we've heard a lot of tributes from high profile people but what are ordinary people in washington saying how do they remember john mccain. many people told me they will remember he. war hero a patriot someone who believed in what he did and someone who was respectful respectful to our viewers also told me that they believe. that he believes believing in bipartisanship will be very important now in this times of tribal partisanship but as i said they believe that he's passing and what he stood for marks in iraq all right and finally alexander what's to happen later today and of course tomorrow. tomorrow
5:12 pm
senator john mccain will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the naval academy symmetry in the now police and as i said this will be a very private ceremony and his family and family members and his close friends will attend this ceremony and we can't assume that it could be the most emotional moment of the of the national mourning. correspondent alexandra phenomena and tyson barker from the aspen institute here in germany thank you you both. let's now look at some of the other stories making news around the world talks between the u.s. and canada to amend the north american free trade agreement have stalled after four days of negotiations the countries remain divided over access to canada's dairy markets and medical patents auto hopes to sign on to the u.s. and mexico's revised accord talks are set to resume on wednesday.
