and thank you for joining us thousands of protesters the taking part in rival demonstrations in the eastern german city of kenneth's far right groups including germany's largest opposition party the anti migration. marched in silence this evening demonstrators have already been gathering in the city broke out of demonstrations early in the weeks by a stabbing of a german man two suspects a syrian and an iraqi were arrested in connection with the killing as no bring in correspondent who is in chemist's so shallow demonstrations from both sides here what exactly is taking place in chemist's right now. good evening yeah the protest has largely dispersed now you're joining me it was

a purchase that was organized by the far right of tea party and the anti islam movement now protesters here have been told by police that they need to move on that's because they can't for safety reasons allow this protest to go ahead they also say that it's gone beyond their allocated time as you can see that i'm sure behind me there are still a number of people gathered and not far from here there are counter protesters gathered as well it's up to the police now to try and keep these groups separated and try and prevent some of the violence that we saw in the streets of monday from here on monday from happening again so shall and i know that earlier you were a counter demonstration what was the message there. you know we spoke to a number of counter-demonstrators they say that they didn't want these images that are just behind me from being the ones that would cost around the world images on monday for example of some of the protest is using the nazi salute some of the violence that we've seen they say that they want to also show that as far as they're concerned refugees are welcome here in saxony and in germany as
8:03 pm
a whole let's have a listen to what they told me. it was with this issues it was important to me to be here to express my opinion just to show that community is not racist that the country as a whole doesn't want to be racist or fascist and to show a positive attitude towards migration it does these are simply people who are in need of help and came here to seek it but they just find rejection and insults and of course because of the light the most infamous and it's really important to make a stand against the right wing and for a tolerant diverse germany to send a message to foreign people here to say we support you we are a diverse and peaceful country and you're welcome here. because. i think the time is past here in germany when people could be chased through the streets without anybody speaking up against it this is really a time when people consciously to tone and do nothing we have to stand up and take to the streets for democracy.
8:04 pm
this is a city that is divided tonight day there are people among those behind me he would argue that gentiles and americans migration policy it is damaging they have told me that they're trying to disassociate themselves from some of the violence that was seen on monday night they say that they have you just about concerns about migration and about safety here in germany and they're here on the streets of oysters opinions so shallow at both sides with very strong and open was in view is but they both say that they want to be peaceful and yet i can see that there is quite a bit of police officers there will be anticipating violence. there are huge number of police officers on the streets today not just police in riot gear we've seen police on horseback we've seen water cannons going through the streets as well they have not yet been used that has remained largely peaceful here although we have seen some some slight scuffles police said some stones were thrown on the side of counts of protesters now police are here tonight they're coming from they've come from across the country they don't want to see
8:05 pm
a piece of the violence that was seen on on monday police were accused of not being prepared for the many thousands of people that took to the streets here and some of the violent scenes that it's used tonight they are now out in force trying to keep the counter protesters and the far right protesters separate. correspondent some people in kenya thank you time now for some of the other stories making news around the world authorities in save the stabbing of two american tourists in the city on friday at a terrorist motive police shot and wounded the suspect at amsterdam's main train station immediately after that stabbing now they identified him as a nineteen year old afghan who holds german residency the americans are recovering in hospital. a massive explosion at a southern germany oil refinery has left at least ten people injured five officers managed to get the ensuing blaze under control but smoke forced

trump who had a bitter feud with mccain he was not invited to attend. that service obama delivered a unit for mccain where he praised his lifelong commitment to serving the american people by his own account john was a rebellious young man. in his case that's understandable what faster way to distinguish yourself when you're the son and grandson of admirals then to munich. eventually though he concluded that the only way to really make his mark on the world is to commit to something bigger than yourself and for job that meant answering the highest of call. serving this country. in a time of war. correspondent alexandra phenomenas outside washington national cathedral where. the memorial was held and here in the studio with me is tyson baca
8:08 pm
from the aspen institute in germany thank you both for joining me so alexandra i'd like to begin with you you were obviously at that memorial and president bush and obama as we've heard delivered you know just what stood out for you. well both former presidents sure are first. john mccain and their personal memories and was quite interesting to listen what they had to say george w. bush praised the late senator for his own for his decency for what he stood for but he also said that he sometimes felt very frustrated by what the late senator had to say but he admitted that that made him a better man and barack obama praised the late senator for his willingness to reach across the political aisle to for the very use he stood for the values that.
8:09 pm
the party lines and that actually i would say was timo to three year what we heard in almost all the tributes stressing how important it is to put country over party something that john mccain believed in. so obviously his family also spoke and his daughter was one of the people who paid tribute and this is a little bit of what she had to say the america of john mccain is generous and welcoming and bald she is resourceful confident secure. she meets her responsibilities she speaks quietly because she is strong america does not boast because she has no need to. be america john mccain has no need to be made great again because america was always great.
8:10 pm
meghan mccain this saying america has always been great carry a message to president trump and his supporters right. yes indeed a message to president a key a rebuke to the president and he. megan mccain has been very critical of president in the past and he her father was one of the president's fierce critic of the republican party and the fact that he basically. the former president barack obama. funeral and the explicit explicit to the president not to attend this memorial spoke to his steed see it to the president and his agenda the president who still continues to disrespect even when it was clear that he is not going to recover from his illness i'd like to bring in now we've
8:11 pm
obviously had a lot of great words about this man john mccain a strong principles independent thought but he wasn't short of critics that's right i mean his his whole brand his whole position public persona was being a maverick and of course if you're a maverick you're going to upset people on both sides so he had definite critics on the on the right of first and foremost obviously president trump you know he got some clear criticism for his attempts to compromise on my immigration he got it for his stance on torture for example during the war on terror and most recently of course when he was the deciding vote to save obamacare this was a trump and republican priority on the left he also got a lot of criticism you know he was supportive of the iraq war he also called for military intervention in iran so he drew criticism from both sides but that doesn't mean that there wasn't a great deal of admiration from both sides as well is this the question you've got working at the u.s. state department i know that you ain't close quarters with him at some point what did you think of him when i had the privilege to sit in a couple of meetings with him an f. time you saw that this is

a man who cares deeply about the u.s. role in the world this is a guy who you know during those times that we were together in twenty fourteen twenty fifteen the ukraine crisis was quite acute but if it was anything the n.t.i. says coalition in the middle east whatever he somebody who pulled out the maps wanted to look at the maps wanted to talk through every detail of policy because no corner of the earth was too remote for us global leadership and he was really invested in making sure that leadership was maintained so given all the things that he was able to do in his life what do you think his name legacy will be i think he's got a great deal of to see first of all his moral leadership i mean his role as a as a maverick of somebody who's willing to reach across the aisle as president obama said somebody who's willing to be unpredictable and enjoy and build new alliances that's that's quite as a legacy but on policy you know his stance on torture rebuilding relations with vietnam saving obamacare stance on migration there's a lot there to be proud of correspondents alex such
