his device. a bad idea we were in the middle of our usual work when the explosion happened in front of our district offices where our building was destroyed so i had myself under the table there was a lot of gunfire at our gate and someone called me to check if we were say but when i came out i saw many people laying on the ground injured while others were dead. medics said many of those hurt including several students from the nearby islamic school who are severely injured one witness said the bomber had tried to speed through a checkpoint at the building but then blew himself up when he was stopped by security forces. yeah i saw bodies strewn on the ground before the ambulances arrived and the whole scene was very ugly. the militant group al-shabaab claimed responsibility immediately they're trying to overthrow somalis internationally backed government.

people have been gathering again in the eastern german city of kenneth's today to take a stand against far right violence and racism the demonstration was called by the evans. lutheran church religious leaders as well as state and local politicians gave speeches calling for tolerance and unity is because said they represent the majority in kemet it follows on the heels of a divisive week of anti immigrant protests and counter protest sparked by the killing of a german resident last weekend two asylum seekers are in custody over the killing. but our correspondent charlotte charles and bill is in kenya following that story for us charlotte it's good to see you but a tense day yes. today can you tell us what you saw and what people there are telling you. yes the threat of violence was in the air throughout the day yesterday the fear that we would see

a repeat of some of the scenes last weekend on monday evening was palpable things did launch the remain peaceful police said that there was some minor scuffles a number of injuries some people were detained but they said they were able to keep the protest is a pause that's not to say that there wasn't a lot of anger from people on the streets here on the side of the far right protesters they were extremely angry at the german government's immigration policies they were chanting things like. there was also a huge mistrust is the media among a number of protesters that we spoke to said that they felt that the legitimate concerns about immigration were being misrepresented in the press on the other side meanwhile there was a lot of anger among the counter processes about some of the scenes that have unfolded over the last week or so people in particular who are drawing attention to
7:05 pm
the nazi salute that was seen by a small group at the far right protesters during the rally on monday the count yesterday telling us that simply cannot happen on the streets of jenny they said that they wanted to go to the streets takes the streets to show a different face of chemist different side to the one that's been around the world aside that's very clear that refugees that migrants are welcome here in germany and of course the produce in saxony drafted in reinforcement from other german federal states of to criticism about how they handled the incident last week how exactly did that work yesterday. so there were hundreds of police on the streets yesterday and not just yesterday if i just draw attention to just behind me there's still an enormous police presence on the streets today that's because there's a small gathering of protesters again who are protesting against some of the far right activism that we've seen on the streets over the last week in kennett
7:06 pm
yesterday they had not just police in riot gear you also had police on horses you had water cannon going through the streets as a terror and for any escalation of violence they were used but there really was a huge difference here on the streets and scenes of the number of police here and what we've seen in the week and police were able to keep the two sides largely apart shilo this is different views here in germany about migration policy and obviously many people are concerned about growing far right sentiment i want to spin this into what germany's foreign minister had to say and then we'll come back to you. but you can this is more than worrying a man was brutally killed on a public street followed by mobs chasing people through the city. people giving the nazi salute and not just isolated individuals. my colleagues abroad have been asking me what's going on in germany that's why i'm glad to see that so many

democrats are taking a stand in canada's making clear that a large majority of germans want to live in an open and tolerant country. so shallow of concern from the foreign minister but how deep of the divisions in german society over this issue. yeah well it has to be make clear that scenes like the ones we've seen playing out in canada and noughts playing out across germany chemist's really has become an epicenter of some of the dissatisfaction in jenny this divided opinion over germany's immigration policies over the last few years people from across the region busting on both sides to the protests over the last few days but saxony in particular the state where kevin is located is pretty divided we saw that last year in the national elections saxony voted for the f.t. the far right party to be the strongest party in those national elections it's

expected that they have to also do very well in regional elections next year so that just goes to show exactly how divided this city this state is in particular. some people reporting from candidates thank you. now to some of the other stories making news around the world u.s. defense secretary james mattis has canceled three hundred million dollars in aid to pakistan citing a lack of decisive action against militants the u.s. believes pakistan has allowed certain terror groups especially near the afghanistan border to operate freely the u.s. secretary of state is due in islamabad next week. and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has praised a separate decision by washington to end its decades long funding of the u.n. agency that helps palestinian refugees he said the money should instead be used to quote we have billeted the refugees the u.s.

had been the agency's largest donor palestinians have condemned the decision. in russia protests are growing over the government's plan to increase the pension age many russians are afraid they'll have to work well into their old age just to buy food widespread criticism has pressured president vladimir putin into making changes but some are still angry. some ten thousand people gathered in central moscow for a protest organized by the communist party. they oppose the government's plan to raise the pension age critics here say the changes won't just have a negative impact on the old younger generations will likely have a harder time finding jobs as older employees keep working longer. the reforms put forward will take away normal pensions for women and future jobs for young people. one for youths is unemployed and one in three can't find

work that suits their qualifications. for weeks the communist party has been pushing for a countrywide referendum on the issue but the kremlin has ignored their attempts angering many. nassir you would hear our people are working and sitting beside money for our retirements like the government wants us right to they have to take that's the way. it was for me was i am eighty eight years old and still have to work part time because we don't have money for meat and sausage that is disgraceful that. no one but you should pay pittston into his colleagues should at least resign or be prosecuted in court the whole lot of them should be taken to court come on but. the polls show more than eighty percent of russians opposed to reform. there are plans for further protests from other

political parties. in a national address on wednesday president putin finally weighed in on russia's debate about pension reform mr putin watered down some of the most controversial aspects of the government's current plans most people i spoke to on this demonstration were not impressed by president putin's concessions to say the least . egypt has ratified a new law that critics say will silence political dissent on social media the law gives the government new powers to monitor people with large online followings it's part of a series of legislation enacted by president sissi that takes aim at so-called cyber crime i understand a national has criticized o.c.c. calling the recent legislation quote an assault on online freedoms the group says that the legislation is vaguely defined and could allow the government to censor any dissent on social media. i mean

a thief has been following this story for us and he now joins me in studio it's good to have you so egypt looking like they're trying to regulate social media how exactly does a slow work write the law actually cracks down on accounts that have over five thousand followers on social media so this is people on facebook and twitter obviously a lot of people i would imagine well actually in egypt extremely popular so there's a lot of people just normal not journalists or bloggers even but just people with popular accounts you have over five thousand followers but what the law actually does it wants to surveil surveil these accounts and crackdown on fake news which is a term that we've heard a lot from the u.s. and europe over the past couple of years also they're not defined but in egypt where you have a crackdown on media to have this term that's not the find being banned has a lot of activists worried because there's also punishments involved i mean could be anything from from a feed to jail so a vague legislation which has huge punishment what do you think of this that's
7:13 pm
a tricky thing actually because twitter has been uncommonly quiet on the egyptian side it seems that the blog may actually already be taking effect just psychologically but we did find some tweets were some people spoke about the law and they spoke out about it so we can take a look at that now we have one twitter user and we've blurred them out so you just to protect their identity says the internet law was ratified yesterday so i better not say anything because what you see. we have another one here he says this new internet laws meant to crack down on the young people who are not already in jail god help us so you have anything ranging from the humorous like the first tweet that we saw to downright frightened about the new crackdown i mean to see if thank you so much for bringing us updated with this story thank you.
