during this period. sixty is. this week. live. player playing. this is e w news live from her lead taking a stand against neo nazis in germany. more than sixty five thousand people turned out for a free concert against racism in the eastern city of canada it's a show of defiance after last week's and violent protest there against mine were. also coming up i went to sleep thinking it was a nightmare i thought i was going to wake up from it so to go to this devastation

in brazil as people realize the extent of the damage done to the two hundred year old national museum of rio de janeiro after it was gutted by fire and how some children in the afghan capital kabul are benefiting from a new mobile library it is the brainchild of an afghan woman she wants to offer the children a respite from the country's difficult security situation and the opportunity to learn to read want to. play. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program it is not about being left wing or right wing it is about doing the decent thing that is how believe singer of one of germany's best known rock bands holes in described last night's concert against racism in the east german city of kemp that's. now musicians there they said that they wanted to send
10:02 am
a signal after anti migrant protests erupted in violence in the city last week tens of thousands of people turned out to watch the concert. you made views into me there were more of us that was the motto of the chemist's concert is liberal germans responded to calls to stand up against far right racism before it started there was a minute of silence for the thirty five year old whose fatal stabbing unleashed last week santi my current protests. the mood was peaceful albeit with a clear message to the racist mobs who shocked the country with thousands chanting nazis out. i. think. this is absolutely fantastic because as the people of cam that's we have to show that our city is colorful open to everyone and that we have no sympathy for what has happened here in recent days. because
10:03 am
internationally we're never far right city the majority of the population is totally normal democratically civilised but not far right took out saying we don't want that here we don't want any such people. you don't want. several well known german bands perform to encampments including local group comes close the driving force behind the concert is the group singer explained at a press conference earlier. not today asking shafter all this rubbish happened we called friends on tuesday evening and asked them if they would join us for the concert. within twenty four hours everyone had said yes everyone got in touch with everyone else and then all these people here agreed to join the concert at the mention gets him with. the lead singer of one of germany's most popular rock groups to talk and who isn't explained his motive for taking part. it is essential that we
10:04 am
are clear this is not left against right everybody who is in any way decent and it does not matter what political beliefs they have opposed as a radical right wing mob which attacks people. few people at the candidates concert would disagree with that their city put on a different face on monday with thousands united in a fun loving show of music intolerance. meantime the german president frank steinmeyer has come under fire for promoting the concert cabinets and sharing the link to the event on his facebook site chief political correspondent melinda crane explains why. amongst the bands who played there was a pretty far left a band that has at times been under observation by germany's approval of the f.b.i. and that led to criticism interestingly enough from the conservative party here in
10:05 am
germany from the christian democrats so not from well from the right wing as well from the far right but in fact from mainstream parties why is that because there's enormous nervousness here about how to handle this rising right wing demagoguery and the fact is we have seen too few of the mainstream politicians actually go to candidates only the family minister has done so and here we hear this nervous reaction from the mainstream i think people are very very uncertain what to do about what we see on rising polarization and and the right wing and at the moment they're feeling their way. and that was our chief political correspondent linda crane a short while ago meantime critics say the hostility toward migrants is big fanned by italy's new populist government far right interior minister mattel salvini has made the issue of illegal immigration a priority in an interview with. salvini said that he was forced to act because the
10:06 am
e.u. had done nothing even as tens of thousands of refugees began landing on italy's shores max began by asking salvini if after one hundred days the new government had addressed italy's most pressing issues such as poverty and unemployment. so no. i'm very happy with the hundred days under my remit which is security immigration and public security we've achieved extraordinary results regarding employment taxes and pensions in the autumn the new government will make its mark with a new path of change growth so i'm not worried about data for this period we're already working on growth which should finally rebound. but you know there let's talk about the european union and the topic of migration a little bit european union you seem at odds with the e.u. at some point do you feel like the goal going forward is to find compromise with
10:07 am
the e.u. or confrontation. you know a chip of course same even though i'm often described as an extremist i'm always trying to reason to discuss to ask questions take the revision of the treaty of dublin and operation saffir for instance we're making proposals we're waiting we're suggesting it's clear that i had to stop the migrants landing last year in the period up to august one hundred thousand migrants arrived and the european union to little or nothing this year we had fewer than twenty thousand landings and the e.u. is still doing little nothing so i'm still willing to debate but more recently we've also been talking with some non european countries like albania serbia and montenegro. and becoming more than a little when i saw you go with me to orbit the prime minister of hungary and you talked about this new alliance somehow i thought what you want is closer to what i'm going to america wants because you want the redistribution of migrants within the european union the doorbell and doesn't want that aren't you closer to me than
10:08 am
to orbit. chip trying to get something good out of everybody victor or ban talks about defending europe's borders about protection in the countries of origin and investment in africa and i agree with him and gloom urkel is proposing a redistribution inside europe and i can agree even with this position in the very near future. what we have to do is help these people so that they don't flee their own countries we should be rapidly investing five hundred million euros in africa i believe that both germany and hungary are right regarding certain issues. but i join us what people do. you saw what's happening in cabinets in germany right at the moment. with the right wing with if you what's happening. somebody said that this is also i'm going to america's fault what's happening there because of the migration crisis do you agree it's coming to america i would say that i'm going to merkel certainly underestimated the risk of
10:09 am
a social clash when she claimed that there was space for hundreds of thousands of people in germany but i still remember what happened during the new year's eve celebrations in cologne in two thousand and fifteen and also elsewhere that i was a violence is never a solution violent schools for violence but the german government has been underestimating the problem for years and the rise of the f.t. is clearly a reaction. on that it out. let's get more now we are joined by our brussels bureau chief max hoffman who we just saw there conducting that interview with italy's interior minister welcome t.n.x. salvini really just one of the newest representatives of arguably a european wave of populous what is their support based on. it's different in every country is there because if you look at italy for example they have huge economic and especially huge financial crisis problems at the moment in germany the economy is doing very well but of course there is a common denominator and that is migration the successful right wing populous and
10:10 am
that's what we've been seeing all across europe they managed to connect the issue of migrations to the problems that people have in their daily lives or the fears for example in germany they connected to cultural fears we're losing our identity in italy they're connecting it to the economic problems to unemployment saying migrants are taking your jobs so this is a very successful strategy it's working out inside of it is probably the master of doing that i talked to the people who support him who were there at the place where we conducted that interview and the absolutely adore him for that because it seems like he has simple answers to complex problems. yeah let's turn to another area where there have been problems recently we've seen in east germany for example racism and xenophobia are out in strength on the streets lots of demonstrators there but we also have counter demonstrations like the concert encampments that we saw a short while ago are they having an impact. yeah it's very impressive pictures that
10:11 am
we saw there earlier but most likely it's not going to make a difference with the people who are already in the cab of the right wing populist we saw that also at the rally of the unions because there was a demonstration of people against against this policy so what happened with the supporters of any it got them even more entrenched because these movements also feed off of opposition so it would probably not convince those people to come out of that right wing populist camp but what it does of course is give what is often called the silent majority in many european countries a voice and make people see ok the right wing populists aren't the only ones around there are actually people who want to see this differently and the question here of course is how long will they be the majority silent or not because in some countries like hungary they are no longer the majority because the right wing populists in this case the door brown the prime minister of hungary are so
10:12 am
successful they are moving towards the middle and you could tell that also in this interview it conducted with you need he is not one who only has answers with migration anymore he can talk about all kinds of topics because he's moving towards the middle and that might give them more votes and at some point might give them a majority max health and brussels thank you so much. now let's get a quick check of some other stories that have been making news around the world coalition forces led by saudi arabia have admitted that the airstrike on the yemen school bus last month was a mistake forty children were killed in that attack the western backed alliance says that they thought that the bus was carrying hoofy rebel leaders the coalition says that those accountable would be held responsible. u.s. president donald trump has borne to syria against the launching an attack on its lead the last rebel stronghold in the country syrian forces are massing around the

the ashes the real phoenix. officials admit the museum suffered from years of underfunding and neglect under successive brazilian governments it's necessary for all the authorities that have the resources specifically the federal government to help the national museum put its history back together. we've already lost part of our collection brazil cannot lose its history. but as you. start. it's feared as much as ninety percent of the museum's collection has been destroyed even if the structure is rebuilt huge numbers of irreplaceable artifacts have been lost forever . afghanistan has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world more than sixty percent of the population and one in three children cannot read or write now one

afghan woman has set up a mobile library in the capital kabul to try and give at least some children the chance to discover the world of books. this is no ordinary pass it offers hope to children in capital every day it tours the afghan capital as residential neighborhoods for two to three hours children can discover worlds otherwise little known to them and get lost in a good big. books with stories about princes and beggars best. dragons too. i read books in two languages here in the past two and dari. fresh to careen started the more by library with the help of donations she studied at oaks for tonight wants to encourage critical thinking among children back home the boss is in a safe space in an otherwise dangerous city. explosions are
10:17 am
a problem and that can happen and i know anytime but then we are we are trying to park the car inside the communities where it is far better it is much more secure but i think overall the security problem in the country is less than that get exists for any project so we cannot stop our work just because of security of the life beyond security issues as. nine year old shot eagerly waits for the bus to come by each day i haven't heard of it yet i enjoy coming here because there's so many exciting things to eat i like stories about best i don't have any pics at home . shot man's father always picks his daughter up from the bus the family fled to kabila from conducive northern afghanistan thinking they'd be safer in the capital but explosions rocked the city nearly every week recently a car bomb exploded near their home panicking shutdowns parents went out to look for her. but. after the blast we finally found shot at the mobile library
10:18 am
we were relieved but except to go to the past we don't let the children out of the house or that. afghanistan has one of the highest a list. see rates in the world at more than sixty percent one in three children cannot read or write so fresh to careen also reads to the children a lot keeping hold of for me is highly important because if i were hopeful these children would be all for that together and we can make something happen in this country so i'm i'm awful fresh to careen has started collecting donations again in the hope of renting another bus and bringing more pics to more children. in tennis five time champion roger federer has crashed out of the u.s. open to australia's john mailmen federer cruise through the first set against his unseated opponent but millman claims the next three sets melman now advances to the
