this is deja vu news live from berlin a new poll reveals a shocking finding about voters in the east of germany if an election was held this sunday the far right alternative for germany would be ahead of and the americans conservatives in the east but as they have d's and tea immigration rhetoric intensifies the two thirds of germans want the party put under surveillance also coming out of the white house who dunnit everyone's asking who's behind the anonymous you new york times op ed piece and everyone's denying it even the vice

president plus germany's first chance to shine after its world cup debacle and its against the world champions we'll tell you why the germans see a draw against france as a partial victory plus no more food on the go one european city wants to ban the burger. which city is it and why does it want to banish fast food. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program a nation divided over migration a new explosive poll opinion poll in germany shows the far right is now the largest political force in the country's east for the first time the anti immigrant alternative for germany or a.f.d. is more popular than angela merkel's conservatives this is the first. nationwide
8:02 am
survey since a spate of violent protests in the eastern city of chemist's a fatal knife attack allegedly committed by asylum seekers through thousands of far right protesters and new nazis onto the streets. now mainstream parties accuse the a.f.d. of instrumental lies in the violence for its own political and now it seems that most germans think that the populist party harbors dangerous extremist tendencies the nationwide survey asked if germany's in domestic intelligence agency should put the f.t. under surveillance the verdict was clear two thirds of those polled said that they want the a.f.d. watched. let's break this down now we are joined by did have used very own nina has a she is joining us from our political department and nina i mean some interesting trends going on here right now in this poll we see the f.t. now the biggest party in the east but we also have the majority of germans want the party put under surveillance i mean how how do you square that dana because i mean
8:03 am
this seems to really paint a picture of a divided nation. it's really important to stress that the is the strongest policy in the country's east so there is an east west divide when it comes to the f.t. the f.t. in this poll last one point in west and. again this shows a deepening gulf between the east and the west and. all the voters of all the other parties say that they do want the a.s.d. watched not watched by the intelligence agencies doesn't mean that the f.t. would be banned straightaway and also this is a question that only the the country's regions can decide on because that's how the intelligence service is built up here and it's a federal system but actually we will see whether this is a continuing trend or not because we will have very important state elections coming up in germany's east next year where the f.t. will probably come out really strong and there's one issue where they really are
8:04 am
getting a lot of political mileage i mean we have to mention after the violence and chemists that the locals they basically choose law enforcement of losing control again we're seeing it east west of vidal when this is polled and i'd like to have a closer look now because when asked when the rule of law works well in germany almost three quarters in the west said that they agreed but the former communist east half of those surveyed said that they did not trust the rule of law. so many people there in the east you know very clearly think that the police have lost control they don't feel safe what is that i mean what is the reality is there a law and order problem in the east. there is a big mistrust in authority is let's put it this way because the police is not the only group that is fairing really poorly in this poll in the east the media pool or polling really poorly also politicians there is not big trust that people in the
8:05 am
think what needs to happen now is a lot of soul searching why that is that there is a big difference because when you look at the figures the crime statistics don't say that police have lost control or told in fact gemini's saying the lowest figures when it comes to crime statistics in thirty years migrant crime has gone down by twenty three percent from twenty sixteen to twenty seventeen so really we need to look at why that is that there is this big mistrust in authorities as a whole in the east maybe it has something to do most definitely something to do with a full of the wall and that there hasn't been enough explanation of the risks and the advantages of a liberal society with all its authorities and institutions let's contrast that a little bit we're going to gauge the mood a bit in the west and again your reaction there after nina because we know that overall in germany the a.f.d. it remains the third largest party that's largely down to its lower support in the west of the country as we've articulated and you actually went to the variant to
8:06 am
see what kind of reception one of its members got you aren't hooka when he took his campaign rally there have a look. showing the red card is it only a football thing you know a small town in bavaria has turned this gesture into a form of political protest in particular against right wing populists this is the town of putting in a pub in their ear one month ahead of the bavarian state election almost a thousand residents have gathered in front of the local town hall. they're chanting nazis nazis get out in protest against a campaign rally by the far right a.f.d. party the reason for the uproar tonight speaker is. the leader of the extreme right wing of the f.t. who is well known for his controversial statements. they're here this evening to
8:07 am
make their feelings clear and whenever they disagree with something said they will raise a red card but after a while some if because for them her speech is just too much to stomach perhaps it was quote i couldn't take it any longer this lack of respect for other parties and politicians the statements against center left politics the things they say should not be repeated it shows this party has nothing to do with democratic politics and i hope a lot of people see it the same way that i do if you. took a speech is disrupted and the protesters are made to leave the room. knows how to make the most out of the situation. to anyone who doesn't love germany should leave germany he says. germany's right wing populist a good at taking advantage of the outrage they provoke but the people of putting holding up their red cards also
8:08 am
proves that they're not scared to take a stand and show populist parties like the a of what they really think of them. so as we can clearly see there immigration a divisive issue and one that politicians in the german capital are struggling to get a handle on let's see how split germans actually are according to this poll asked if german governments asked if the german government takes people's concerns about immigration seriously a very slim majority of those surveyed fifty one percent said no. so again we're seeing you know the country really split down the middle here but you know because we've been talking about this east west divide a lot nina how does that factor when we when we when we bring that into play when you talk about immigration of course there's also a big divide between east and west and when it comes to people's dances because we've seen that in the east there were many cities where they just simply weren't
8:09 am
a lot of foreigners that before twenty fifteen when the first refugees started arriving in germany and many people just say that they don't feel like they asked that is something that you hear a lot of our reporters who went to cambridge or to dresden they say they say that this is people's response and overall when we look at the question of immigration people are saying that they are generally have happy with how the government has dealt with the immigration crisis when it comes to what is being done for the refugees but very unhappy when it comes to how asylum seekers who have no right to stay here whose application has been denied already that they're not being sent home that is something where we've seen a lot of cases and that is driving people really angry. another question that in for to asked was about integration and the country as well as through
8:10 am
specifically what they asked and how did people respond well people asked how happy are you with how integration has been dealt with by the politicians and people did on so when it comes to. finding them shelter. that is something that they say has been dealt with ok because you know we had lots of big camps and people being slowly moved into their own homes into that houses etc but they square student of especially people who have committed crimes. being violent or whose application is simply being rejected if they're not being sent home which is something that has happened repeatedly the attack of the. terrorist act he was something is somebody who should have been sent home for example in those are very strong cases that people remember and. stick in people's minds if they don't get sent back
8:11 am
to their home countries and that is something that a very unhappy with. the with the latest on this in protest poll which as we mentioned shows a nation divided over migration methink you so much for now let's get a quick check of some other stories that have been making news around the world one of the front runners in brazil's presidential election year. is in stable but critical condition after being stabbed in the abdomen the far right politician was attacked while campaigning in the city. security sources in the southern iraqi city of basra says that say the demonstrators have set fire to the main local government building despite a curfew imposed by authorities several hundred people took to the streets to protest about collapsing infrastructure power cuts and corruption. and officials in japan say that at least sixteen people have been confirmed dead after

a powerful earthquake struck the northern island of hokkaido on thursday rescue workers are continuing to search for survivors after landslides more than twenty people are still missing. u.s. president donald trump has urged reporters from the new york times to investigate the identity of the author of a sensational opinion piece that is fueling suspicion at the white house the newspaper published a piece by an anonymous senior trump administration official who claims there is inside resistance working to frustrate his agenda the washington rumor mel has gone into overdrive and that denials are coming thick and fast a day after the story broke the denials began. white house counsel don mcgann was one of many who quickly distanced themselves from the incendiary new york times editorial and the author claims to be part of a resistance that is working to prevent trump's most dangerous impulses from with

8:15 am
a match add let's break it down because you know this is supposed to be a new era for the germany team at least it's been branded in that way so how did it go well exactly as you said this was a very difficult summer for germany so this was an opportunity to lay some of those demons to rest is a new format. and the team walked out basically to the heart shaped display of flags from the fans it was very sweet gesture for a team which really hasn't seen much love throughout the summer but they were on the back foot for much of the game it wasn't pretty times neither side really destroyed. but this was an opportunity for germany to rejig to bring in some fresh faces and to try and instill a sense of purpose after as we said a very difficult summer of the world cup and of course what everyone is always talking about is lessons learned from the german team where does the team where does the coach go from here so what do you think that you. will take from this well i think there are plenty of positives to take i mean this was a solid performance against the reigning world cup champions there was no sign of that leaky defense which played them in russia they were compact they were well
8:16 am
organized they dealt admirably with a very talented group of french players. and as we said this game is all about confidence and as we're about to hear from germany coach you know if it was a satisfying evening for the national team. as well as it was the spirit of the so we were very conscious that this match was a particularly important one after a disappointing world cup and that the team had to show a different face a different way of playing for how they did that. so one match down another one coming up on sunday against peru what does germany need to do there well as i've said they were very well organized in this game but they won quite as good going forward so i think farms are going to really want to see an exciting forms from germany peru long obviously quite the same level of opposition as france and not the reigning world champion so this is an opportunity to get on the ball to try and dominate to get fans off the seats it be lovely if we
8:17 am
can see a few of the players like you i saw me that didn't make the world cup squad in there from the start of course an excitement some young players some fresh faces and i think they can be expected to dominate to sort of dominate this game. and i think they need a big performance now to really get the fans back on board and to get in a different headspace probably as well as mccambridge from dave davies for it thank you so much well now we head to some tennis news and a japanese woman will compete in a grand slam tennis final for the first time ever a twenty year old naomi osaka defeated last year's u.s. open runner up madison keys to earn a shot at this year's open title on the other side of the net in tomorrow's twenty three time in tomorrow's final excuse me twenty three time glen grand slam champion serena williams but osaka actually defeated williams in their only previous meeting last march and by the way japan's k. corey is vying for a shot in the men's finals he will play novak djokovic later today.

now some showbiz news and a big loss for hollywood on a somber note here american actor burt reynolds has died at the age of eighty two according to his manager reynolds rose to fame in the one nine hundred seventy s. and one acclaim for his performances in deliverance smokey and the bandit and boogie nights but he was perhaps best known for this photograph coming up right here posing nude on the pages of cosmopolitan in one nine hundred seventy two reynolds was hollywood's top grossing star every here from the one nine hundred seventy eight through one thousand eight hundred two. and i'm free is here now and a crisis is looming in some developing countries absolutely and at the moment harrison's where if you look that there is sort of a meltdown when it comes to a mugging small case of course they were once a beacon of hope but they now appear to be in meltdown with their currencies losing
8:19 am
value dramatically the turkish lira the argentine peso south africa's rand and uneasy is reputed to name but a few currency traders have had to had strong nerves but it's course far worse for the people living in those countries. a supermarket in the turkish city of dia but here things used to be a lot busier here but rising prices hitting sales is that. we're supposed to increase the prices of the new products we buy we raise the prices in accordance with the profit margin of course so people no longer have as much purchasing power they used to be able to fill a shopping cart for two hundred lire but now it costs them three hundred to three hundred twenty five percent of the. price is a climbing because the turkish lira has lost so much value against the dollar in the first half of this year it plummeted by a stunning seventy two percent. south africa's economy is also stuttering that country's currency the rand has lost a full thirty percent against the dollar south africa is now considered as being in
8:20 am
recession following two. quarters of falling g.d.p. . india is also not fairing too well right now the rupee has lost ten percent against the dollar since march this year but argentina's been the worst hit so far austerity measures of unleashed wave upon wave of anti-government demonstrations that unions take to the streets of when a czar is on an almost daily basis argentina's paizo has lost eighty six percent in value against the dollar over the last six months. and we're joined now by a holocaust reading chief economist at barron bag bank good to have you with us today took us through the turmoil that we're seeing in emerging markets firstly what is driving this crisis there are two things that are driving this crisis the first is that many emerging markets simply had times that were too good to be true too good to last in recent years so there is some both tightening that's necessary
8:21 am
and secondly what we also see that those emerging markets that have significant debt in u.s. dollars and significant current account deficits those are struggling at a time when the u.s. federal reserve bank is grazing interest rates it's interesting that you mention the u.s. federal reserve there as contributing to some of this crisis and so it's not actually this time trades policy trumps trade policy that is causing this turmoil. trumps trade policy contributes a little bit here and there but it is not one of the major causes of this particular turmoil for instance drums tweets against turkey do play you wrote in the extent of the devaluation of the turkish lira but they are really not the reason for that and how real is the risk of contagion to other markets there is some risk of contagion however contagion to be confined to those emerging markets that are fairly vulnerable again the vulnerable ones are those with significant
8:22 am
dollar debt and with significant current account deaf. it's which means they are to some extent living beyond their means other countries such as those which have little dollar debt and which are exporting more than they import those other countries should be mostly safe i think we do have to ask the question as well you know we're not just talking about emerging economies but what is the risk to for example european union countries germany for example. the emerging market crisis will probably cause a bit of a dent in growth in heavily export dependent countries such as germany quite a few others in europe and possibly in japan but at the same time the single biggest export market for most countries namely the united states is expanding rapidly thanks to the tax cuts which we've seen over there so in many cases more exports to the us through largely offset the decline in exports to quite a few emerging markets holger schmieding what's the remedy the remedy is that the
8:23 am
vulnerable emerging markets need to tighten their belts they especially need to regain credibility they need to raise interest rates to attract some money and they need to desist from stupid policies such as the fight which turkey is seems to be picking with quite a few people including people in the european union and the us president bush meeting chief economist at bear them back bank thank you very much you're welcome. britain's that very fashion house says it will stop the controversial practice of burning millions of dollars worth of overstock products to preserve its high prices and up market image the news could signal a growing awareness of social responsibility not the ethical issues in the luxury products industry but every also says it's phasing out real fur from its product range the wrong item on to animal rights activists say. perjury is responding to years of unflattering protests on the part of activists
8:24 am
who condemned its use of animal for years but the fashion industry is also in the doghouse for a host of environmental and ethical issues particularly the practice of destroying sold stock prober it can hardly afford to spend a fortune on luxury addresses for shops and sumptuous interiors if its products end up in the bargain bin on the other side of town last year it destroyed over thirty million dollars worth of unsold goods but many were shocked. i think for these fashion brands these lifestyle brands the you know the consumer tastes are changing and the sharing of ostentatious wealth may still be a factor in people buying these goods but he still wants a green backing to what they are doing they want to make sure that this wealth is not showing off or costs. popery says it now sees the sense to this and pledges to reuse recycle or donate all sellable products in the future. the company is now
8:25 am
following in the a pickle footsteps of other brands such as first saatchi gucci and stella mccartney suggesting to many that the fashion industry is truly turning a corner. now in some city streets street figures rather is all the rage but if you had it's of florence and dreaming and collapse grabbing a slice of pizza with a view of the pallets of a keogh you might have to think again the city is joining roman in venice in restricting where and when tourists can eat fast food on the street. it's a beautiful day in florence masterpieces of renaissance architecture everywhere and everywhere tourists munching fast food anywhere they can find a seat the locals say they're a nuisance tourists say they have no choice there's not a lot of place to have a lot of seats and table so sitting on the three to three only solution. but that may soon come to an end the city will now issue fines of up to five hundred euros
8:26 am
to people eating on the streets of the city's historic center. many restauranteurs say it's high time known yelm at santee has long objected to tourists eating fast food in front of his restaurant. yes he was going to announce something i like this new law and i think that everything that's done by retailers institutions citizens in order to improve the streets receives our support of. the food. but restaurant owners are losing income is only one of the problems brought in by florence's plague of fast food tourists they also leave a mountain of rubbish in their wake rome and venice have already taken action. for until recently but then mum cut these rules are not practical for tourists we can't eat at a restaurant every day we get a sandwich to save time don't. the new rules are posted prominently in florence's
8:27 am
tourist areas but the city will soon see if its hard line will learn to restress specked. and her mind and now the top story we're following for you a new poll reveals that if elections were held this weekend the far right party would overtake i'm going to. eastern germany the findings come off the bottom protests in ten minutes following a fatal stabbing and i should be committed. and ministration officials are lining up to deny that they wanted a sensational opinion piece that described a resistance working against the president's agenda donald trump has called the also cold treat. you're watching news from berlin plenty more coming up at the top of the hour thanks for your company and see the very same.
