this is d.w. news the law is a problem but when it is another anti immigration policy about to shake up european politics voting is over in general elections in the sweden of the far right sweden democrats please to make it major games what does it mean for the country's liberal alliance we'll have analysis from our correspondent in stockholm also coming up. tens of thousands of russians take to the streets in protest against vladimir putin's pension reforms hundreds of arrests up for of course it's off to the

rallies which camas polls show feelings support for the russian president. and in sports an expensive outburst for serina williams at the u.s. open a seventeen thousand dollars fine for williams' angry confrontation with the umpire of a controversial cool we'll take you through the divided reactions on social media. i'm on your trips mckinnon thanks for joining me first thing is over in sweden and one of the most unpredictable general elections for decades mainstream policies have been facing a major challenge from the far right which is chasing big gains from voters unhappy with immigration and was a slow pace of integration exit polls are showing jimmy akeson is nationalist sweden democrats taking just over sixteen percent. and that monks are ryan's in
8:02 pm
their support but it leaves leaves them in third place prime minister stephan lutheran called the selection a referendum on sweden's welfare state his party is now expected to emerge as the strongest force. and correspondent barbara outside the swedish parliament and stockholm and joins me now hi barbara polling stations have just come close to how how do things let there. yeah we're looking at the exit polls but we have to really take all this what we see now with a pinch of salt because they are notoriously unreliable here in sweden it's not for me as you have in some countries like in germany where your almost see the result of the election so we're just seeing the exit polls of the public swedish broadcaster and that looks a bit different from we had first from other television stations and they still
8:03 pm
show the social democrats in first place at around twenty six percent but they show a much stronger showing for these sweden democrats the right wing populist party and the run nineteen per cent and they would then be in second place if this comes true because the conservatives the center party is around seventeen so they would slide down into third place now this is the general trend and so these social democrats have lost votes. in comparison to the last election but it's not as devastating as some had feared and they might as well hold onto power it depends now on the showing of the others of the greens and the left party ok but still significant gains there for the far right swedish democrats as you were saying is there a chance that they could now become part of the next government. that depends on whether the fire wall that the other parties the traditional sweetie party so far
8:04 pm
have defended against the right wing populist and we've been asking around here today during election day and everybody who was allied to one of these party said no we will not do it no way under no circumstances of course they had been reporting before this day whereas some observers said we're not so sure they might you know sort of make a pact bot if the social democrats the other two leftist parties emerge as the strongest force and they can again form a minority government then no they will not get the direct say however they will be in parliament they will be strong and their voice will be heard and so they will wield a certain amount of influence that's quite clear and also a lot of people we talked to here today said we have to somehow not not say not talk to these people or what we have to consider what their voters want we have to
8:05 pm
sort of think about the issues we really have to sort of deal with things maybe in a more open way than swedish politics are have done in the past because harmony was what he was really was raining for many years and that is over ok barbara briefly if you can to what extent has this election change sweet and then the political discourse in the country. discourse has and that's what many observers say has really become much more harsher the country has become more polarized and opinions are or are being expressed in a much more crass way we're just very un swedish if you look at the traditions of the country so that is sort of a new edge in swedish politics and some people even say this might be for the good because this might force people and might force the it's status party into dealing with problems the country has in a more direct and open manner so this is a two sided thing but we will have to see sort of what really emerges after the

votes have been counted oblivion in stockholm thank you so much. now some five hundred protesters have followed the call of far right groups and march through a town in eastern germany following the death of a twenty two year old man much as will reside at least through the town of couldn't about one hundred fifty kilometers just southwest of ballin say the german national died off an ultra cation with two ask the following an autopsy authorities say the man died of cardiac arrest and that it was not in connection with that dispute. thousands of russians have joined nationwide rallies against the government's proposed pension reforms the plan would increase the pension age by five years to sixty five for men and sixty for women the independent monitoring group says police arrested nearly three hundred people anti corruption activist alex alexei novelli
8:07 pm
urged supporters to join the protests before he was sentenced to thirty days in jail for organizing an authorized public events. now joining us from the russian capital is. chief erie. tell us more about the extent of these protests are they really only about putin's pension reforms or are they more general despite dissatisfaction with him and his policies. you know how these protests were called in by the opposition politician x. in a volley you sounded he is currently in prison and all in all far fewer people war on the streets of these times than in his previous protests this was partly because not only was not there but also because of the subject of these protests the pension reform isn't particularly exciting for young people and young people are the clean tail of an of ali actually nevertheless there were violent clashes with
8:08 pm
the police hundreds of russians have been arrested in nineteen cities a big bunch of them were detained in st petersburg there the police arrested up to five hundred people but the despite a great deal of dissatisfaction throughout the country with the blind pension reform there is no real danger to president leonid kuchma and he's policies his popularity has fallen but not dramatically he also talked to people on television a few days ago and presented himself as a good president so-called good president who has improved this reform somewhat ok now local elections have been held across russia on sunday for governors and for regional parliaments and they any threat asil to putin's grip on power. i don't think so since the reelection in march the president is firmly firmly in the saddle and he has he's people throughout the country now as far as we can see this election had no surprises as expected the election campaign was the weakest in
8:09 pm
a long time within nouriel competition in most regions in most regions of the result has already been taken for granted we spoke to the election observers from the russian energy all named goal loss it's a movement for defense of voters' rights and they're sad that the state candidates throughout the country have been running nearly unopposed people who could compete with those in power were not allowed to run the same situation by the way here in moscow where the mayor said guess what jani and protege of letting it putin has great chance to be reelected again as in instead of real opposition candidates he faced an inexperienced and absolutely chanceless candidates who were not at all dangerous for him and in that sense the election for mayor in moscow sums up the condition of democracy in all of russia all right yuri rachet reporting from moscow thank you very much. now history has been made at the u.s.

is well placed to emulate williams illustrious career. reaction on social media after williams accuse the. us of sexism and some more on those reactions i've enjoyed jonathan crane well come and tell us exactly what did serina say well i think there's two parts to this story the thing that happened on the court obviously we heard in the piece according the umpire and the thief also called on the referee on to the court and then. the thought that because i'm a woman you're going to take this away from me and she continued that theme in her post match press conference this is what she had to say she said i've seen other men several things and i'm here fighting for women's rights and for women's equality of the me to say thief and for him to take again it made me feel like it was a sexist remark so really doubling down on her outburst from we say something on court
8:12 pm
and then once they get off the court he's in the moment so obviously they then saw from this stringer hasn't this out has his her in the pocket because tonight the u.s. tennis association of announce they find seventeen thousand dollars for this three penalties not a small amount of money now plenty of people have been tweeting in support of serena williams haven't they not just her fans the current and former player as most notably perhaps believe jean king twelve time grand slam champion she's now an equal rights advocate she had this to say she said when a woman is emotional she's hysterical and she's penalized for it when a man does the same he's outspoken and there are no repercussions yes appraises this arena for calling out what she says is a double standard victoria as a current player a bit more to the point if this was a men's match it wouldn't happen like this just wouldn't other male players as well have come out and said look we've seen and done far worse with with lesser penalties you look at the likes of. john mcenroe in the path john mcenroe with his
