sixty. a little. this week w. . this is news coming to you live from berlin sweden faces political deadlock in the wake of its general election center left prime minister calls for talks with the central right opposition as but blogs all well short of the majority and the far right speaking democrats see a surge in support they could be the king makers for any ruling coalition we go
8:01 am
live just local also coming up russian and syrian jets resume in terms of airstrikes on the rebel held it live province in northern syria the attacks cull ahead of a feud all out assault on the region pike government forces. and in sports the german national football team are in action on sunday after this summer's world cup disappointment you're walking lives men back to winning ways is in a friendly match with the group. well i'm terry march and welcome to the program sweden's general election produces a cliffhanger both the main political blocs have failed to secure a majority current tally show the ruling center left social democrats and their allies with a slight edge over the center right alliance but some two hundred thousand votes from swedes living abroad remain to be counted. and that could tip the balance
8:02 am
meanwhile the popular sweden democrats made spectacular gains to come in third place the far right party hopes to become kingmaker of any ruling coalition a scenario of both centrists centrist blocs by difficult to stop like. sweden selection hasn't produced a real winner incumbent prime minister stephan left and social democrat green coalition is neck and neck with the center right parliamentary block. the result may force the bloc system that has defined the country's politics for decades to change is easy the no side has a clear majority it's only natural that we will have to work across the political divide to make it possible to govern sweden so regardless of the final election results this will be the death of bloc politics. the friends
8:03 am
attempt to form a new kind of government is likely to be complicated and drawn out his appeal to the opposition to co-operate across blocs has so far full and on daffy as the leader of the second place moderate party of christus son is for now intent on building his own son to right coalition his existing alliance includes the center liberals and christian democrats. here me and we will together make decisions about how will form a new and better government in sweden. that task begins literally tomorrow and it won't be easy. thank you. although both sides a short of a majority they've so far pledged not to work with the anti immigration euro skeptics sweden democrats once on the fringes the party made historic gains in the election although unlikely to be in government jimmy i kiss on celebrated the

nationalists new political influence. who. do you know what friends of sweden they said on t.v. that it's hard to declare a winner of this election i know he's won the sweden democrats. i the party which has neo nazi roots has capitalized on some sweet skepticism towards immigration and the establishment as the country faces a protected period of uncertainty once things clear this week and democrats have driven a wedge into the country's political consensus. or correspondent barbara basal is in stockholm and joined just fell for more barbara with the center left and center right virtually tied it looks like sweden is having burst length the coalition talks how is this likely to play out. we don't know yet because sweden has never done before so they really are in sort of uncharted waters
8:05 am
here because it was as we have heard to the tradition that there is a center left bloc with three parties and a center right was four parties and they sort of alternate and mostly the swedish history it's been the social democrats who had who were in first place now they would have to do what the dutch did last year after their election which was equally inconclusive they have to sort of reach across party lines sit down together at a big table and say do we find any common ground and the interesting question of course and that is does any of the center right parties have any inclination is to get closer to jimmy officer and his so called democrats the right wing populist party. hold that the parties have promised during the election campaign. barbara let's talk about sweden democrats for a moment that far right party made big gains in this election taking nearly twenty
8:06 am
percent of the vote how did they manage to do that. it's it makes it was a slow rise over several years during the last election they had thirteen percent now they've risen to seventeen something and so they were sort of going out and the interesting point here is that this weekend democrats and in particular jimmy office and have done something that is that was a to do in swedish politics fall a long time where you have seen sort of colorless more bureaucratic seeming politicians at the head of the big parties he is the sort of a firebrand speaker who can really rouse the masses that is something that was rather frowned upon and sweden earlier and now people seem to develop a taste for it he's somebody who comes out as an out and talks in the marketplaces and sort of gets into the heavy fear mongering and the suites and many of them not
8:07 am
of course the majority but quite a number of them left it up it is something that they haven't seen before somebody who presents himself as a strong leader it's a novelty and so that is part of the big success and then of course that he he does talk about problems that arise from migrations and migration. faults the mistakes that had been made made in the past that we had been covered up by the established parties and so that is his success but both the center left and center right blocks are refusing to govern with the far right sweden democrats barbara so what could those thoughts when democrats still end up playing a role in the next government briefly if you can. they won't really play in obvious role they won't be in government but of course they're very noisy they will have a look at that will have a lot of parliamentarians in the stack behind us here and they will sort of talk about their issues day in and day out and so that will be the influence they wield
8:08 am
they will certainly not shut up and the coziness of swedish politics as we've seen for many decades that is over barbara thank you so much. there in stockholm meanwhile here in germany some two and a half thousand protesters followed the call of far right groups and marched through a town in the east of the country following the death of a twenty two year old german man marchers walked silently through curtain about one hundred fifty kilometers southwest of berlin police say the man died after an altercation with two migrants post-mortem showed the cause of death was acute heart failure not directly linked to his injuries the afghan men have been taken into police custody. this is where a twenty two year old chairman man died after an altercation with two afghans the suspects were swiftly taken into police custody city authorities and the local

church also responded quickly urging citizens to remain calm they found no hope. i can only hope and ask that violence is not met with counter-violence. his pleas seems to have been heard many shared the pastors wish that there would be no escalation as in cam it's two weeks ago christians mayor also called for citizens to keep a cool head. but i have a simple request to stay the way you are so don't let external influences get to you. later prosecutors said an autopsy showed the man died of acute heart failure not directly linked to his injuries sustained in the incident. police were deployed to kryten in droves there had been calls on social media including from neo nazi groups for a march of mourning on sunday evening some two thousand five hundred participants
8:10 am
marched peacefully at first but later the mood turned hostile as right wing extremists called for retribution. we need to wake up and see that they don't want to live alongside us peacefully so an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. despite the aggressive rhetoric local politicians expressed relief was kind of. there was no violence there were verbal but no physical attacks. it was relatively peaceful if you've been issued on board a few moments we don't want a second cabinet's the next few days will show whether calm is maintained. spawn from d.w. politics is covering this story for us and joins us now on to help us understand this we've got two suspects that have been arrested authorities don't believe that the dead man's death was caused by any injuries that he might have sustained during
8:11 am
the altercation with these two men so why have they been arrested while there was a fight obviously and this man was attacked he was injured to the extent that he was taken to hospital it turned out that he had a chronically weak heart and his heart basically gave in once he was taken to hospital so in a sense his death was in some form a consequence of this attack but it it wasn't directed caused by any of the injuries are you mad been kicked or something like that but none of those injuries actually caused him to die is hot simply gave in in that stress situation so the men have been arrested for. causing serious injury that late to a death but it's not being treated as a homicide and it's all tell us about the demonstrations that followed the man's death in curtain was it anything like the far right protests that we witnessed in chemist's two weeks ago well it was similar in the sense of course that in a very brief space of time in this case two and
8:12 am
a ha thousand toronto wing supporters far right neo nazi people. convened in curtain came there and demonstrated but what was not present was the kind of scenes of attacks against people that looked so foreign the kinds of. intense. chanting and so on that we had seen in cannes that's there was some sort of. how right wing nazi speech beginning being given at the end but the march itself was quiet and without any incidents so where does this go from here what are police expecting or are they expecting any further developments in the case itself in the curtain case itself or are they expecting any more protests well the case obviously is being investigated. it's not quite clear exactly what's happened there was some sort of altercation between young men who tend to congregate in this park with this happened. there was a woman involved who apparently is pregnant and so on so there's a whole lot of questions still to be aunts of about what exactly happened so that's
8:13 am
being investigated then no demonstrations that i know of that has been a knowledge of at the moment so it seems as though the escalation that we saw in canada in the past two weeks is not likely to be repeated in this case and thank you very much the w.'s hands but from your politics. reports from syria say russian and syrian aircraft have resumed intensive airstrikes in the province of it live i witnesses and a monitoring group told news agencies there were several fatalities the area is the last major region held by rebel forces observers say the army of president bashar al assad is preparing a large scale assault to retake it backed by russia and iran. there's hardly enough time to put out the fire in this town and seven if that. then a second strike happens. it's. going to give

has a tradition of putting on shows to celebrate itself and its achievements huge parades through the capital pyongyang showcasing the armed forces as well as happy loyal citizens but each parade is a bit different and experts study the details for their political significance what was missing today intercontinental ballistic missiles which could deliver nuclear warheads to the united states. a large part of the event was devoted to civilians and efforts to build the economy the declared priority of north korean leader kim jong un. this is a delicate moment for the country it's already fragile economy is on to even greater pressure because of tough sanctions in response to its nuclear program. kim says he aims for the denuclearization of the korean peninsula on the surprise summit with u.s. president donald trump in june looked like it might herald
8:18 am
a new phase of detente relations suddenly looked chummy but then swiftly soured but kim is about to meet his south korean counterpart again to discuss practical measures on denuclearization. that's why the absence of long range missiles at the parade is so significant it would seem to indicate a willingness for and need to focus on peace and prosperity rather than on military might. germany's national football team of just had another chance to repair their reputation after their disappointing world cup campaign this summer they managed a scoreless draw with world champions france in the nation's league on thursday but fans and critics expected more from them when they took on peru in a friendly. this wasn't exactly the performance coach him live was hoping for some highs against peru but also plenty of lows germany failed to exploit their chances
8:19 am
in the fast paced early stages marco toys alone wasted three golden opportunities in the first fifteen minutes and germany's defense once again looked porous allowing luis adding to open the scoring for peru after twenty two minutes but the equaliser was not long in coming bronze hitting the target after winning the ball deep in the opponents' half just three minutes later. germany didn't shine in the second half either five minutes from time nico schultz capitalized on peru's defensive gaffe to net the winner in his debut for the national team two one the final score. will be here to talk about germany's win against peru is mark organ from d.w. sports morning mark so how do you rate germany's performance in that game we just saw. not very highly. there were positives the performance if you would be one of

them he was exceptional in the world cup when he came on as a substitute and a lot of people felt it really should have started. at the world cup and he was given that chance last night and he was he was exceptional of legal over the goalkeeper to germany level and he played well and they create a lot of chances the problem is the didn't take many of them and then further on the negative side of the back they're a little bit shaky company testing the goalkeeper as goalkeeper. very highly rated but he's prone to the old mistake for germany and he'd been disappointed to have been beaten his new post last night so a mixed bag really mixed bag still a little shaky but there were some highlights they did win one of the players making their debut nico scholtz he scored the winning goal in fact you think that's a sign of good things to come it was lovely for sure. i mean the goal was a fluke the ball was actually going in the political keeper effectively through into isn't it a little embarrassed i'm sure he would have been delighted to scorn is the view so
8:21 am
it was good for germany fans to see some fresh blood finally coming into the team that was also. came on as a substitute. be in there as well so finally things being freshened up so that is a positive but. it wasn't wasn't a great isn't a for germany viral freshened up people what they really want is transformation in the national team tell us what do you think that germany has learned from its mistakes of the world cup well i think you know we love he really should have freshen things up in russia even relied a little bit so heavily on the old guard he's finally seen a cave the likes of mario gomez for example as his career is on and for germany and he needed to bring in bring in fresh blood i think what they're really missing is germany's traditionally had a goal poacher from back in the seventy's through to you can klinsmann in the ninety's through to because love close. and that's really missing for them that was expected maybe that he moved on i would come and beat and be that guy you'd be the

guy that scores the goals but he's really struggled so that's perhaps missing and there still is a little bit of staleness there and you'll get a love i think perhaps that could have changed the coach still room for improvement and definitely mark thank you so much mark organ from devious sports thank you. now tennis novak djokovic produced a strong performance to be twenty porto in the u.s. open final and win his fourteenth grand slam title thirty one year old serb won wimbledon in july and will climb to fourth in the world after a back to back grand slam victories struck a bitch one six three seven six six three to seal his third triumph in new york as opponent del potro was playing his first grand slam final since winning the two thousand and nine u.s. open having almost quit the sport because of multiple wrist injuries just three years ago. and previously in the women's competition twenty year old amie
