this is news coming to live from berlin and taking a stand against right wing extremism german chancellor angela merkel condemns the ballance as recent demonstrations against migrants in eastern germany and says there can be no justification for hatred towards people who look different to the far right off was issued accuses her of ignoring the concerns of its supporters also coming up an urgent call for unity the president of the e.u. commission john called juncus says the e.u. must improve its ability to speak with one voice or risk being undermined by other

countries. well i'm terry martin thanks for joining us german chancellor i'm going to echo has defended her handling of the fallout from the recent far right protests in the eastern german city of chemists at a debate in the german bundestag the leader of germany's opposition populist if the party accused michael of misrepresenting abed's in connection with those prague protests those demonstrations were sparked by the alleged killing of a german national by migrants the protests were allegedly accompanied by attacks on foreigners in cannes it's an allegation that the head of germany's domestic security agency has questioned. well for more on this story we're joined here in the studio by political correspondent hans but and down at the bonus talk is. cheap political editor. let's go straight over to
11:02 am
make. mccain up first of all what we heard that the head of germany's domestic intelligence service would agree with alexander golland who was speaking just before her about what transpired in chemist's what's your opinion of how do you see what went down there are today. well the whole issue of. of course being in the focus on this really being put on the spot here today over his comments one must bear in mind the head of the intelligence agency whose job it is to produce facts and evidence and report to politicians did make a rather political statement in actually questioning whether that was a bit premature to talk about people being particularly foreign looking people being chased in the streets back in kemet now this is something he will have to answer for today it looks like he doesn't really have evidence to prove that video
11:03 am
you. know where he questioned whether it was in fact a real video he doesn't have anything to disprove that so there's a lot of questions over his position and there's a lot of questions of whether there was a very different intent and here there's a tight connection to i'm going to michael's own interior minister who is quoted or who was also questioned by the far right if t. here today he said that migration was the mother of all political problems and that was the opening line of the f.t. of alexander garland here in parliament so it raises questions is somebody out to get the german chancellor here and who is the head of the german intelligence domestic intelligence services anyway to get involved and so his future hangs in the balance and there is yet more evidence of a lot of internal pressure playing out on the german chancellor. will be coming back to we're going to play a sound bite from xander garland were he addresses the unrest that accompanied
11:04 am
the far right protests and he chooses chancellor merkel of using it to quash criticism of her migration policy. you behave as if we only had a choice between multiculturalism and fascism apparently it doesn't occur to you that it's possible to live like the swiss or the danes or the swedes. and i'm sorry i missed it instead. ms merkel when you were forced to take back the accusation that people were hunted down you said there was hatred. first of all hatred is not a crime and second it usually has causes why was there to use your language hatred because the people of chemists are bad people or because they feel themselves to be the victims of bad policy because they hate out of malice for no reason it appears
11:05 am
we will wait in vain for any sign of self-criticism is miracle in the film for this and if you believe it would. be screwed least i mean. that's. not of course as of xander gold on the head of the opposition far right party in the german parliament speaking earlier this morning hans there's been a lot of discussion here in germany about what actually transpired in chem. we just heard alexander got on describing his version of events the head of germany's domestic security service would probably agree with you has medical been damaged by the criticism following candidates what you can say is that the latest polls show that the f.t. the alternative for germany this right wing populist party is gaining in support amongst voters is approaching support of twenty percent a month so it isn't that i'm going back with conservatives in these polls are losing support so in some sense you can say yes i'm going to michael is under
11:06 am
a lot of pressure on this whole thing has been damaging to her political standing and. the standing of her political party at the same time you have to say eighty percent of people in germany continue to support policies that are in favor of malcolm's policies or at least not. in favor of the a.f.e. . in a sense marcus certainly represents a very large majority of german voters but the pressure is intense especially also because interior minister is not entirely behind her in this situation going back of course also addressed parliament this morning and she dressed the issue of chemists of course let's listen to a little bit of what she had to say this country in a scheme. i can understand when people are outraged when someone is killed and then it becomes clear that the suspects had criminal records or were people who
11:07 am
should be deported. yeah yeah i know off and this we have a task to tell you and this is a task that we are working on with determination together with the federal state. and the interior minister has proposed additional measures we are aware of the responsibilities we have in this area. but while i understand and share the outrage that people feel i will not allow this to excuse demonstrations that show contempt for other people you know. you mentioned some of the months what. do you think the chancellor merkel's long awaited statement reacting to what happened in cabinets is going to satisfy her critics. it's not going to satisfy her critics no it's the same position that she's basically been taking full full quite
11:08 am
a long time and has a very principled position she is saying that while she has some understanding for people being disturbed by such attacks such violent crimes before and by asylum seekers on my grounds she will not total all kind of contour attack or the kind of cold for violence the nazi slogans that are being called the nazi symbols that are being used these all contravene german goal are a threat to the stability of german society so why she has understanding full distance situation in in country in cities such as can she saying the rule of law has to be applied to both sides let's go back down to the bone as tykwer mechanical is still standing by mccain well there was a heated exchange there in parliament today between law and from the far right if he and the former leader of the social democrats martin shoulder something very
11:09 am
unusual for the bonus talk tell us about. yes very unusual for the bonus track not so necessarily for martin souls who of course is a former head of the european parliament and is known as someone who didn't shy away from expelling an m.p. a greek m.p. when he made comments that he deemed to be racist and which quite clearly were now what happened was that marcus was wanted to ask a question and he then accused rather made a statement and accused alexander gallant of using a method that was well known from fascism which was to narrow down complex problems to basically just one single issue and this is being migration he also called alexander garland out for calling those hitler those nazi salutes that were seen on the streets of kennett's as something that considered to be an appetising well he put him right there and said that that is actually a crime under german law and this also shows the big gulf here between the

a.f.p. and all other parties because whereas the a.f.d. says we could also be like switzerland who want to have a different way of life a different way of living pretty much all other parties in the bundestag are united in feeling that right now is really a point where the big question is are you for or against germany's democracy are you for or against the rule of law and this is something that really came through in all of the debates that we've seen so far here today thank you very much chief political editor make it of course now they're talking to us from the blue star going here in the studio hundred one to our political correspondent brings up to date on what's been happening there in the parliament thank you both very much. now we're going to go to strasburg in his last major speech before leaving office next year european commission president john club has urged europe to become more of a global player giving his state of the union address to the european parliament in
11:11 am
strasbourg called for stronger external borders and a shared approach to tackling migration he pledged to ensure an orderly exit for britain and also proposed measures to crackdown on terrorism and election meddling and he urged member states to resist nationalist tendency. for well our correspondent max hoffman was following you know because speech in stross very very closely and max joins us now i'm actually i was probably young because last big speech as head of the e.u. commission or the most important points for him he touched upon you know various amount of points as you mentioned he talked about migration the rule of law but the over arching message here was he wants europe to stand together he was the e.u. to a global player not only in trade matters but also in political matters even mention military matters which is quite unusual for the european union you know
11:12 am
what terry let's listen to his own words in this respect. when we are united we europeans. as a union. have become. a force to be reckoned with that you cannot do without. some in europe. one happy with the agreement reached with. a present from someone surprised by it but that should be no surprise whenever you speaks as. one. so. we can. position on others. strong. in strasburg what does youngest still want to achieve before leaving office
11:13 am
next year and how realistic is this. while the brain obstacle to achieving anything is what you know he just referred to in that sound bite we heard terry when europe stands united europe really hasn't stood that united in the past because of the divisions between parts of eastern europe for example hungary and polled and other states in the european union but bearing that he mentioned the e.u. japan free trade agreement that seems feasible because they're quite far also having a political agreement on the next budget that's important because it will be without money from the united kingdom it'll be tough to hash that what out in time you know once and strengthen the euro as an international currency that's also important for him so you can see this wasn't his legit legacy speech he didn't dwell on the past he really still has some projects but it doesn't only depend on him it depends on the member states and it depends on what he said the unity of the european union and now there's another topic on the agenda there for the european
11:14 am
parliament day max voting on whether or not to start the process on whether or not to strip hungary of its voting rights what do you expect. can. and then we come back to the unity here because of course saying europe needs to be united at the same time having this vote here in parliament and it looks it's probably more likely that this article seven procedure will start maybe eventually leading to the stripping of e.u. voting rights but we'll only know for sure afterwards. thank you very much. and just for we go to the top stories we're following for you here today on news. has said there's no excuse for expressions of hate sympathies in response to crimes committed by migrants remarks came to parliament the opposition far right deep part he is accusing her of ignoring the
11:15 am
concerns of some citizens of migration. you are watching news coming to you live from berlin we have more coming up for you at the top of the next to me will be with you then you can get all the latest news information around the clock on our website. thanks for the. letter we were. when do we want to. be pursued.
