philippines typhoon mango tears through the country's main island ripping off roofs and knocking out power supplies as authorities assess the damage they warned that more floods and landslides could be to come plus angela merkel's bavarian allies are under pressure to see as you meet in munich as they scramble to stave off a challenge from the far right and upcoming elections polls suggest the party could be heading for its worst results in more than sixty years. unexpired good to have you with us at least four people have died in the u.s. as tropical storm force florence batters the states of north and south carolina the national hurricane center says the storm is moving west at just over three kilometers per hour but is dumping dangerous amounts of rain authorities warn of catastrophic flooding and say up to two point five million people could be left

without power. florence's first victims were a mother and her baby. they were killed when this tree crashed their home in the coastal city of wilmington north carolina. a neighbor described terrifying scenes as the storm bordine. was very dark. and the wind being high like it is now in the higher then so all you could see was water and it was very low. so. here really figure out what's going on out there. further up the coast in new bern a huge storm surge left hundreds of residents trapped as the waters rose around them . i know i rescue crews used boats and military vehicles to get the might. i never but some terrified of my entire life. it was horrifying. just wondering what's going on
5:03 pm
there and where the water's going to go and how high it's going to go and how we're going to get out and if we're going to get trapped in the attic or the. hundreds of thousands of homes and i without power authority is a warning evacuated residents to stay put in childhood as. what we're dealing with here is a major flooding and rain event at this point we're also looking at potential landslides and the flooding is far from over so please follow instructions from state and local emergency managers do not attempt to drive through any water that you see on the roadway just remember to turn around don't drown or not cooling westwards florence is expected to linger for days forecast as a predicting more life threatening storm surges and flooding with parts of north and south carolina set to receive up to a meter of rain. let's now go live to detail because

correspondent my assuage are standing by in washington north carolina you are on the ground what is the situation there now. nic we're in a small town that's just north of new bern one of the towns that was hit the hardest and as you can see the floodwaters have mostly receded in this town but the banks of the pimlico river which are standing right by are still very much overflow on to the park property here this all here is still very much flooded i am basically standing in the river while i'm standing on the sidewalk several meters of back from where the river actually is supposed to start and we're still getting rain here and it's not expected to stop for several days as we were driving through the town here this is a very small community and we could very clearly see the marks about a meter high on the houses where the water had been just yesterday several several

streets are still closed the police are still out trying to keep people indoors saying the water on the ground could be potentially unsafe if there's any downed wires anywhere we also saw branches lying in the streets still a lot of damage to be assessed and a lot of cleanup to be done here so you're talking about possible hidden dangers there mine of florence was downgraded to a tropical storm but we hear authorities are still warning people to stay at home is that partly why there's hidden dangers absolutely as we heard in the report they are still expecting several days of rain the winds here have mostly died down in this region is out of the storm's direct grasp shall we say but they're still expecting gallons and gallons of rain there was one estimate that said north carolina alone is going to get around ten true really in gallons of rain throughout the course so even though florence is no longer a hurricane they're still looking at massive flooding flash floods damage due to
5:06 pm
that and of course there's always the danger of people unfortunately dying so what can we expect in the next few hours and days that. well like we said there's still a lot of rain expected in this town and several towns around it in this county in this community are under curfew at least a night if not for the next several days trying to keep people off of the streets so if there are still any people who need to be rescued emergency crews can get to them and to keep people from trying to drive through streets like this causing further damage in this town alone of this town is less than ten thousand people there were ninety people who needed to be rescued in a big story in the next coming days is going to be how are they going to restore power to the hundreds of thousands of people across the state who are now without power especially as the flooding continues that's going to make it very difficult for rescue crews and for power crews to get through and rescue people on restore energy ok miles schwager thank you very much miles schrader from d.d.b.

communities. it is a popular tourist destination for many well to do filipinos but it's also home to many of the country's poor and indigenous pop. lation who often live in more improvised homes and it's likely that the poor neighborhoods will be especially hard hit by the violent flooding that we're seeing here but it's not just the water that's posed a danger from typhoon monk that the extreme wind has also taken its toll now i want you have a listen to this. that's the sound of two hundred kilometer per hour winds ripping across the island now this video was taken into a guy and also in the north of the country the storm may have crossed over the philippines by and large but this video gives you no idea of the fury that is now bearing down on hong kong and southern china now the southern and central regions of the philippines were spared the brunt of the storm but at least in the region around manila the capital they're being confronted with
5:09 pm
a unique cleanup challenge of their own now the philippines is one of the biggest contributors of plastic waste in the world and much of it ends up in the waters off the coast of the flooding from typhoon monkhood however is carried much of that trash back onto the island like here in downtown manila where at least for now residents of the capital are left to pick up the pieces. and thank you aaron now to some of the other stories making news around the world. the u.s. space agency nasa has launched its most advanced space laser ever the mission will examine the effects of global climate change on the earth's polar ice the data it gathers will allow scientists to precisely measure the changes in glaciers ice sheets and sea ice police in turkey have arrested a detained hundreds of workers who were protesting over conditions that is then bulls new airport thousands took part in protests which were sparked after more than a dozen people were injured in an on site accident demonstration was broken up by

riot police who fired tear gas at the crowd. and u.s. president donald trump's former campaign manager paul nana ford has pleaded guilty to two criminal counts the move is part of a deal to cooperate with special counsel robert muller who is investigating possible collusion between trump's presidential campaign and russia criminal charges are not related to the campaign. german chancellor angela merkel's conservative allies in bavaria the c.s.u. are meeting in munich to discuss strategy ahead of a key regional election next month polls show the party could be heading towards its worst result in more than sixty years as voters defect to other parties including the far right. the party's leader horses they hope for who also serves as germany's federal interior minister has dropped in the polls after clashes with merkel on a number of issues including migration. to has a is at the c.s.u. party conference in munich for us recently the c.s.u.
5:11 pm
has taken on some of the far right viewpoints of the immigration has that failed as a strategy. well migration is of course an extremely polarizing topic especially here in bavaria where the vast majority of refugees arrived in twenty fifteen many c.s.u. officials back then criticised anglo machall who's actually their sister party representative for her what they called her open door policy towards refugees and for a long time it sounded as though the seas he was trying to imitate the f.t. and poles then clearly show that that strategy didn't work that voters didn't like that at all and so the c.s.u. has now clearly changed its strategy in fact the state premier michael souter who spoke earlier here in munich said that the sea is you need to attack the a.f.d. he said the sea is you need to distance itself from the a.f.p. very clearly and i asked some of the high ranking official says how they're
5:12 pm
planning to win back the voters. that became from the order firstly we will fight the a.f.p. wherever they endanger the basis of freedom and democracy by the way it's most important that we don't quietly accept this that goes for all people who value democracy secondly we will take on and solve the problems and worries of the people in our country and not just talk about it. we have to clearly show that we do. have a clear line as regards migration policy that we have a plan that is what we actually have you know we want to help people who are asking for asylum in europe it's not it's an issue but we also wanted to know that we don't know on the basis you know that we have a regular procedure to be established that you know who is coming into our country this is different to the a.s.d. who simply says no a servant is no refugees at all in our country that is not all
5:13 pm
i'm. there's a change of line it would seem you know polls show the party is not just losing votes to the f.t. but also to other parties are we seeing a revolt of some kind against of the far right policies there to. well what we are definitely seeing is not the same is happening in bavaria what is happening on a federal level here in germany that the political landscape is becoming more frakt in fact at the very elections on the fourteenth of october we could see seven parties and the very important for the very first time and incidentally parties that have established really clear top picks are doing really well in the polls and that includes the green party last year that many people thought the green party was almost dead but the green party could become second strongest pasi thank you nina and finally an update from formula one where qualifying has come to a close it was a competitive battle for the staging starting grid at the singapore grand prix with
