iran's elite revolutionary guard. both sunni arab separatists and so-called islamic state have claimed responsibility for the attack. members of iran's elite forces taking cover dignitaries and civilians fleeing for their lives as gunmen opened fire on a military parade and was the soldiers were marching in one of the countrywide annual parades marking the start of iran's eight year war with iraq in the one nine hundred eighty s. when the shooting started. we suddenly realized that some armed people wearing fake military uniforms started attacking our comrades from behind the viewing platform then they opened fire on women and children they were aimlessly shooting with no target. members of iran's

revolutionary guards officials watching from a stand and civilians were among those killed. it's the bloodiest assault to strike the country in recent years as iran's foreign minister was quick to point his finger at a u.s. ally in the region and threatened to retaliate. he tweeted iran holds regional tera sponsors and the us masters accountable for such attacks iran will respond swiftly and decisively in defense of iranian lives. later both the so-called islamic state and a sunni arab nationalist movement claimed responsibility for the attack the night that gave evidence iran has blamed its arch rival saudi arabia for funding arab separatist groups in the past the bloodshed is a huge shock for the country and likely to raise tensions in an already tumultuous region. for more on the story we're joined now by saeed come ali dacre he's

the iran correspondent for britain's guardian newspaper of hello to you save so we're hearing conflicting claims of responsibility for the attack iran is blaming u.s. allies in the region what do they mean by this man earlier this morning a spokesperson for the separatist group a mob nationalist group spoke to a number of exams and it was enough playing that they were behind the times to talk about it was wrong today. and later our news agency was your initial news agency of islamic state isis claimed responsibility as well there is no i mean it's not obvious at this point that there's any links between the two groups or islamic state exploiting the situation just to claim responsibility anyway. this point is too early to say where are we now know what are islamic state was involved or not

but iran has been critical as you mentioned in the report to blame the super tuesday blamed regional these regional rivals especially in a specific with saudi arabia for funding some of these groups. all right so what what more can you actually tell us about these sunni arab separatist just how serious a force are they. i was in southwest iran is is home to iran's arab minority it's. in the past months there's been recurring protests have been happening over environmental challenges economy grievances so it's terminus time in the iran's west western iran and these groups have been active for many years and iran has many for many years accused saudi arabia and other. you know gulf arab countries of of helping them militarily

and financially. but it comes at a very critical time you know iran and saudi arabia are both involved in various conflicts in the region in syria for example in yemen and they are the opposite sides of each in all of these conflicts so it comes at a very critical time i think both for iran and for the middle east well the iranian government was very quick to say that they're going to respond with with a crushing response but just what are they likely to do. i mean it's difficult to say what options they have. there was as i mentioned conflicts in the original or both sides are involved so there are what this means is that there's going to be an escalation probably in the tensions within iran and its rivals in the region i mean most of these conflicts are proxy wars you know you don't have a direct conflict between along the saudi arabia and iran of the share a border what is happening is that there's
8:07 pm
a number of proxy wars in syria as i mentioned in yemen where example there is i mean there's there's a series in there around forty up without a doubt. between him and and probably usually do sort of tension in the short so and consequences in other parts of the region that's why you know things like peace in a terrorist attack in the wrong kind can have reverberations and not a part of the middle east st kamali day don and iran correspondent for london's guardian newspaper many thanks for all your in science and now to some of the other stories making news around the world the death toll following the ferry accident on lake victoria in tanzania has risen to two hundred and nine the boat capsized on thursday state media says the ferry was overloaded two days after the disaster regency workers rescued a survivor who was found in a pocket of air. thousands of people have rallied in cities across russia against

the german military under your literate leadership has caused such a disaster with seemingly not such good means to handle it. but apart from that apology that from the line has issued both yesterday and today to local authorities saying that this incident should never have happened the way he did they are unfortunately very few solutions at the moment and even fewer answers. and that was done a reg of reporting earlier from this side of that blaze in northwest germany. all right some sports news now and boxing world heavyweight champion anthony joshua is on a mission to defend his title when he takes on a russian as alexander povetkin at london's wembley stadium on saturday with an unblemished professional record joshua's seen by many as the best in his weight division but the twenty eight year old is up against an opponent with
