this is deja vu news live from berlin calls for germany's catholic church to take responsibility for decades of sexual abuse against children. a new report reveals thousands of cases of sexual crimes and cover ups in the country's justice minister wants to see criminal charges brought against those responsible also coming up i've never sexually assaulting anyone the u.s. supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh says the allegations against him are baseless the protesters say it is time for him to address in detail the allegations of

sexual assault from two well. and that's not messy that's not rinaldo fever games tro asian football star blue commode rich best male player in the world is of the beginning of a new era. i brought in thomas thanks so much for being with us catholic church officials are set to release a report detailing thousands of sexual abuse cases here in germany that report will be presented later today during the german bishops conference but some of its key findings have already been leaked to the leaked to the public the study found priests at abused more than three and a half thousand children and teens here in germany over a period of seventy years the victims mostly male and mostly children. well over one and a half thousand priests are accused of committing those crimes critics of the study
9:02 am
as well as its authors themselves say the true scale of the abuse was probably far greater. well this internal church investigation is already under fire even before its publication joining us now in the studio our political correspondent simon young good morning simon the german justice minister has already come out saying that this investigation is long overdue and that this is just the tip of the iceberg that's right justice minister katz have enough has urged the church to be she said take responsibility for decades of concealment cover ups and denials of pretty strong words there from her she also called on the roman catholic church to work with state prosecutors to bring every known case to justice and take steps to prevent more child abuse in the future so it's possible i would say even likely that we are going to see criminal prosecutions as a result of the information that's come to light ok does that mean we could see
9:03 am
investigations on the criminal level getting underway like we've seen in the us and like we've seen in australia already not only against priests but potentially against bishops and archbishops as well yeah i think so germany's independent process commissioner for child sex abuse issues has recommended that state authorities take action on this they do everything they can to help the victims to obtain compensation but also to have access to church files and so on because there have been problems in the past as we said of coverups he also said that the state has a g.t. of care to all victims of church sexual abuse so action is going to be taken as you say this issue of there are fears now that there could be another cover up in this case but the fact that this report was commissioned by the church and it's
9:04 am
being made public today by the church is perhaps a positive signal even though this report doesn't cover even catholic institutions in germany so the. if of the. phrase relevant here ok and the study's authors also saying many documents have been destroyed that they were trying to discover could complicate the criminal investigation while the revelations of child sex abuse and catholic dioceses in germany but literally around the world has led many catholics to question their faith a reporter found that both german churchgoers and priests are shocked by the scope of the crops. father shot but it is getting ready for mass sunday service is the highlight of his week he's a catholic priest in the west german city of oberhausen and has a funny feeling because the catholic church is in the midst of discussing sexual abuses made by clergy. it's taken months not millan's i wonder what all people really think about me how does he view my work as
9:05 am
a priest. do they sometimes think moon at all i wonder if everything's all right with him. like parishes all over the country the oberhausen community is shocked the latest study says more than one thousand six hundred german clergy sexually abused children under their protection and that in the last seventy years there have been at least three thousand six hundred and seventy seven victims. and this is a dark chapter in our history probably the darkest in the history of the church churchgoers have coffee and cake together despite the peaceful sunday mood the subject on everyone's minds is the sexual abuse scandal and the cover up that has been happening for years. of that he didn't which i am deeply shocked that the church has swept this under the rug for decades from my point of view the guilty really must be hunted down not only under tourch law but also under employment laws and criminal law. officers inside i'm sad and i'm still angry about it.
9:06 am
so it's a terrible mirror that's being held up for the church to look at what happened in the past is very frightening so it's all the more important to take a detailed look at it now. the obligatory oath of celibacy for priests and bishops is causing heated debate amongst catholics according to the study celibacy is a risk factor leading to abuse. even out a few i am in favor of abolishing celibacy i think that would reduce the abuse you know dendrite it does on the flopping on does is and that's not the solution it's not the reason for the abuse this type of abuse also exists outside the church where celibacy isn't imposed. for a new role so i think this is an outdated doctrine of the church and it should be abolished. father for brits understands that people are angry but does not see celibacy as the cause of the problem he wants better coordinated efforts by the
9:07 am
church to prevent the abuse in the future. there prevention is one aspect of this sign and one of the likely consequences of this report so for publication today well as we've said there could well be criminal process prosecutions the justice minister and others in the government clearly think it is time to take action especially because in the postes the church the catholic church is often done little or nothing to bring abuses to justice from the catholic bishops i think the talk is about changing the culture within the church for instance improving the training of priests and so on but i think given the severity and systematic nature of these crimes that's not going to be enough ok and it's not just here in germany pope francis has refused to answer the allegations that he himself was aware of the
9:08 am
cover up some of them going back decades does this document here in germany increase the pressure on the pontiff himself on the pope to step forward and speak out well i think it will do because germany is just one more country there have been many others where these these type of abuse sexual abuse over many years has been fully documented as you say pope francis so far has not responded to such allegations but he has called a big conference of his bishops in rome for next february that will be a worldwide conference to talk about child sexual abuse and there are calls for him to meet that not just bishops who victims of these crimes will have to see if he does that to the victim so so often overseen and all of this simon yeah thanks very much. now for some of the other stories making the news at this hour new zealand's first baby has made her international debut a new york three month old neve tirol was the star of the u.n.

accusations drive him from the nomination process the senate plans to hear testimony this week from at least one of the two women claiming capital sexually assaulted them in the one nine hundred eighty s. kavanagh has denied any wrongdoing here's what he had to say in an interview on fox news i have never sexually assaulted anyone not in high school not however. i've always treated women with dignity and respect i'm not going to want to false accusations try boss that out of this process and. we're looking for a fair process where i can be heard and of certainly. my integrity my wife long record my wife a long record of promoting dignity and equality for women starting with the women who knew me when i was fourteen years old. i'm not going to rework.
9:11 am
all the allegations against kavanaugh have of course prompted calls for his nomination to be rejected did obvious miers waiter in washington went to a protest against supreme court nominee. if. it takes a village to bring down a supreme court nomination and that's what these protesters at the u.s. capitol are asking for. allegations of sexual misconduct have cast a pall over kavanagh president trump's nominee to the supreme court in the era of me to these people aren't taking it lightly it's time to listen to women it's been time to listen to women for like thousands of years at this point but finally since the women's march that was the largest global demonstration in world history we're actually coming together it's no longer he said he said but i believe that men should be held accountable and should do anything in their power to correct any injustice is that they have committed and. past and i believe that hiding behind

power and patriarchy is wrong and i believe that men should stand if they have committed wrongs and admit that. the protest was corden aided by several different activist groups including the same people who put together the massive women's march that swept the world last year as one of the leaders of the women's march it's important for us to ensure that the movement that we created on january twenty first two thousand and seventeen translates into action and in this particular moment important for women and allies to be out here it's a very important moment in our generation cavanagh cannot get on the supreme court he will roll back decades on things that folks before us fought very hard for us to have and i'm here because i don't want my daughters to have less rights than i have and the specter of the midterm elections coming up in less than two months hangs over everything republicans fear they could lose their control of both houses of congress despite flagging public support for the president's nominee republicans have stood by him the stories that kavanaugh his accusers tell are difficult to prove but these protesters believe that i absolutely believe her the fact that it's

now been corroborated or his actions have been corroborated by other women is good but i was fine with just that one woman i wonder how many other women in his adult life have. also been harassed or worse by him the first the first accusation should should be enough to have him would withdraw withdrawn the second is just now embarrassing at this point it's shameful and he should be gone i mean i hope to accomplish that we start treating these women with with some kind of seriousness and respect i don't think they came out of nowhere i think they were i think they're for real i'm not for ruining anybody's life but if they've ruined these women's if he's ruined these women's lives and we need to talk about this. one of the accusers are scheduled to testify later this week to the senate judiciary committee in the face of growing hostility kavanah on the. republicans have indicated they will not give up without a fight neither are these activists. and kavanagh's the nomination

appreciate moderates you have to think of him as a maestro and one of the two top qualities of a maestro a maestro can lead a maestro can dictate and it was the creative genius of modern age that basically led to croatia to a world cup final he was his country's most important player and then you look at what he's done at club level he helped me out madrid to win a champions league a champions league title that's the fourth season in a row and you know and that's also because his vision is key to that success and i think what i find so refreshing about him winning is that you have a midfield that's being recognized and oftentimes the reason why strikers and forwards tend to dominate this award is because the award is biased towards gold so goals you know you can put a number on them but often times the skill and the value of a. midfield defendo goalkeeper a lot more difficult to quantify it's wonderful to see a midfielder who shows it isn't it you know when you look back at past awards it's

always been an old or messy since two thousand and seven i would argue at the end of an arabs looking like you know no no no no no we have fought now this this rivalry is far from over and that's because you know both. of these players are now in their thirty's but as they say thirty is the new twenty year and messi and ronaldo they continue to play at the highest level i mean their performances haven't even diminished and they still in mean they are two of the best you know of all time and if we look at second best right now the players that kind of come to mind you think of ok even has a lot you think of name ah but then you like but these so pale in comparison to these two so i always say this is a rivalry i'm telling you we should enjoy the next few years because it doesn't come often that we have to play as warne around the same time where we get to enjoy him because there's no override button in football once it's over it's over ok so there's a supposed button right now for it although it. ok what about the women's

award marta fantastic six six years around oh yeah and i think that might as well like she is she's an exceptional player she's a football legend there's no doubt about that for many she's even considered to be the best female footballer of all time but let's be fair if you look at it this year i mean she's had a decent season but when you look at the likes of germany midfielder jennifer you take a look at norway's. you know who played a crucial role in the on winning the women's champions league final you have to ask yourself you know this is not to take away from from my tab but at the same time she had a good season but not the best ok limit thanks very much ring us up to date date on the fifth awards today and there's been a real breakthrough in the united states where scientists are reporting success and hoping patients was prowesses to stand and even to take steps again it's all signs to an electrical implant that zaps the spinal cord along with months of intense

was a fantastic breakthrough there in minnesota over to gary hart now some dark clouds out there over the german economy you know well it's hard to believe the german economy because the german economy has been doing so well recently growth is solid unemployment is on record lows companies report bump of figures everybody happy not really today the big wigs of german industry meetings also american berlin for that annual powwow many are concerned the happy days could soon be over so the motto of this year's meeting is simple risk. the first autumn storms are sweeping across germany that reminds companies here that the climate for doing business worldwide is changing. for one thing there's the smoldering issue of tariffs you know when it's not us president donald trump continues to impose punitive trade tariffs mainly against china. the long established world order of free trade networks faces ever greater threats. other problems are brewing too
9:22 am
there are still no clear answers to the final circumstances surrounding the united kingdom's departure from the european union ok out of briggs it would be a nightmare for everyone and just a few months away from the deadline there's still no sign of an agreement. there is also the question of whether german companies are lagging in strategic sectors. china and the united states are dominating the race to develop future technologies . and germany's critical automobile sector is also lacking in the development of electric cars. it looks like german businesses may be facing some rough weather in the near future. and steve best thing is at that summit of german industry. is going to speak later this morning steve what do industry captains that expect to hear from map of the day. or get hard i can tell you what they want to hear what
9:23 am
they want to hear is of course that the political turmoil of the past year is over and of course she can't tell them that as the report mention things like breaks it things like sanctions on iran russia and of course the trade tariffs that have been put on regularly this year these are all things that are affecting german businesses already such as german carmakers in the u.s. but also there's the domestic political turmoil and that's because the government here in germany is not incredibly stable right now it's been doing a lot of and infighting and that's caused i think some business leaders they feel like there's a bit of. it's a bit rudderless at the top during times in which there is so much turmoil i want to start here even said that if the german government were business it would have already failed now what can they expect to hear from america what will she actually say it's probably going to be much more calibrated is probably going to be a celebration of german business you mention the record numbers and then it will mention these challenges that we just talked about and of course some of the traditional challenges that also lay behind in terms of investment in terms of

lowering taxes things that people want to hear but again it will be very calibrated this is on the america. as we know indeed stephen business that we're going to talk to you a bit later in the program us an example of spoken thank you very much so far. the price of oil has hit a four year high barrel of brant crude now costs more than eighty one dollars this high comes off the members of opec a group of oil producing nations ruled out increasing their output that decision defies calls from the u.s. which fears that the sanctions it re imposed on or which iran will put pressure on global supply. filling the tank in germany is taking a bigger and bigger bite out of the pocketbook and these gentlemen are going to have a hand in that the leaders of the opec oil producing nations met in the of geron capital over the weekend where they agreed to keep production level stable and with

demand rising that means prices have nowhere to go but up monday morning the price of brant north sea crude rose two point seven percent to eighty one dollars a barrel the highest mark in four years something that's not likely to please u.s. president donald trump he's been a critic of opec's production policy which he says keeps prices high and hurts american businesses and consumers. but trump also shares some of the responsibility for higher prices thanks to the sanctions against iran opec's third largest member . american pressure has hampered iran's ability to sell oil on international markets venezuela's economic crisis is also hitting world supply. countries on blackly to greece production in the near ten x. that say the price of brant crude could top ninety or one hundred dollars early next year. u.s.
