this is due to be a news wire from berlin calls for germany's catholic church to take responsibility for the sexual abuse of children going back decades a new report reveals thousands of cases of sexual assaults of coverups the country's justice minister wants to see criminal charges brought against those responsible also coming out for sexual assaults of any one. u.s. supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh says the allegations against him are baseless but protesters say it's time for him to address in detail the allegations of sexual

assaults from two women. and it's not messy and it's not rinaldo even names croatia's look at motegi as the best footballer in the world so is this the beginning of a new year. plus we meet a young man who can walk again five years after being paralyzed in a severe accident a scientific breakthrough is helping patients with spinal cord injury stand and even walk again with the help of an implanted device. i'm brian thomas thanks so much for being with us catholic church officials are set to release a report detailing thousands of sexual abuse cases here in germany that report will be presented in a few hours during a meeting by german bishops conference. officials but some of us key findings have
10:02 am
already been leaked to the public the study found priests that abused more than three and a half thousand children and teens here in germany over a period of seventy years the victims mostly male and mostly children well over one and a half thousand priests are ques of committing these crimes critics of the study as well as the authors of it themselves say the true scale of the abuse all that's probably far greater than they found. well this internal church investigation already under fire before its publication joining me for more in the studio is our political correspondent simon young simon good morning how could this have gone on for so long undetected brown there are many aunts as to that first of all if i may just one statistic this study found that in almost two thirds of cases of abuse by priests that were investigated by the state just as authorities the charges were
10:03 am
dropped so that's a very high proportion the question is why well a lot of people say that the real problem here is the hierarchical structure of the catholic church that means that priests have a lot of power and often members of the catholic church have been reluctant to challenge them and a significant number of those are keys to this study has also found were people who held office senior positions within the church another point is that in many of these cases there's little real evidence it's one person's word against another and the study is also found that in many cases documents relating to these cases have disappeared perhaps they've been destroyed by the perpetrators themselves or other people keen to protect the reputation of the church so while there have been prosecutions probably haven't been enough and it's very difficult to bring people
10:04 am
to justice within this organization of the catholic church ok victims groups are not alone in wanting to see justice for many of these cases could the publication of this report later today lead to the prosecution of some priests who assaulted children and some of the bishops even and high ranking church officials that apparently covered all of this up well i think it will lead to prosecutions eventually but perhaps not directly this is an anonymized study cover. cases going that well into the past in some cases the incidents alleged happened before the second world war so what needs to happen now is what the justice minister has been calling for namely for the church authorities to work together with the state or thorax is to find out what happened bring people to justice and make sure it never happens again ok that'll mean delivering up the documents simon the revelations of child sex abuse in catholic diocese is literally around the world has led many

catholics to question or face a reporter found that both german churchgoers and priests have been shocked by the scope of the crimes. it's getting ready for sunday mass it used to be the highlight of his week but the catholic priest feels different now the catholic church is caught up in a major sexual abuse scandal and father worries. sometimes i wonder what people really think about me how do you view my work as a priest and do this sometimes think i wonder if everything is all right with him by the. revelations that more than three and a half thousand children fell victim to clergy have caused shock and outrage among germans everywhere the parishioners here and no exception. this is a doctor of turn a history probably the darkest. after worship coffee

and cake but the scandal and its cover up are in a lot of people's minds as. deeply shocked that the church has struck through some of the rock for decades from my point of view really must be hunted down not only in the church long but also under the criminal law. and i'm very sad and i'm still angry about it it's a terrible mirror that's being here. the church to look at. what's happened in the past is very frightening so it's all the more important to take a detour of lucrative no. one is being looked at is the obligatory oath of celibacy for catholic priests and bishops according to the study celibacy is a risk factor leading to it. does it and i'm in favor of the polishing celibacy i think that would reduce the m.p.'s. it's not the
10:07 am
reason for good use this type of abuse also exists outside the church salute to see isn't imposed. i think this is an outdated doctoring of the church and it should be abolished. understands that people are angry but he himself doesn't see celibacy as the cause of the problem he says what's needed is a better coordinated effort by the church to prevent peace in the future. simon millions of catholics here in germany very concerned about this what we see after the publication of this report changes in the way the catholic church or does business well i think it's a positive sign is the german bishops sponsored this study to be undertaken and they're publishing it today so that's a start at least there's a lot of talk from within the catholic church here about changing culture there is a discussion about celibacy a lot of people say that's relevant about improving training of priests and so on
10:08 am
but i think in the light of the systematic nature and the massive scale of these abuses that still going to be enough what's needed is real consequences in terms of bringing people to justice ok and in terms of that so far at the top we've heard nothing from pope francis he's refused to answer any of the allegations including those that he himself was aware of cover up some going back decades does this document increase the pressure on the pope to step forward. and speak out i think it does because it shows that germany is yet another country and in a growing list that has documented cases of child sexual abuse in particular the pope has convened a worldwide conference of his bishops for next february in rome to discuss this matter and there are calls for him to meet victims at that time which row would obviously be a very positive signal about the way the church is dealing with this if you just did it certainly would bring in the victims and to all of the simon young thanks

my lifelong record of promoting the dignity and equality for women starting with the women who knew me when i was fourteen years old. i'm not going anywhere. all the allegations against kavanaugh have prompted calls for his nomination to be rejected. waiter in washington went to a protest against the supreme court nominee. it takes a village to bring down a supreme court nomination and that's what these protesters at the u.s. capitol are asking for. allegations of sexual misconduct have cast a pall over brett kavanaugh president trumps nominee to the supreme court in the era of me to these people aren't taking it lightly it's time to listen to women it's been time to listen to women for like thousands of years at this point but finally since the women's march that was the largest global demonstration in world history we're actually coming together it's no longer he said he said but i believe
10:12 am
that men should be held accountable and should do anything in their power to correct any injustices that they have committed in their past and i believe that hiding behind power and patriarchy is wrong and i believe that men should stand up if they have committed wrongs and admit that. the protest was coordinated by several different activist groups including the same people who put together the massive women's march that swept the world last year as one of the leaders of the women's march it's important for us to ensure that the movie. that we created on january twenty first two thousand and seventeen translates into action and in this particular moment important for women and allies to be out here it's a very important moment in our generation cavanagh cannot get on the supreme court he will roll us back decades on things that folks before us fought very hard for us to have and i'm here because i don't want my daughters to have less rights than i have and the specter of the midterm elections coming up in less than two months

hangs over everything republicans fear they could lose their control of both houses of congress despite flagging public support for the president's nominee republicans have stood by him the stories that kavanaugh his accusers tell are difficult to prove but these protesters believe that i absolutely believe her the fact that it's now been corroborated or his actions have been corroborated by other women is good but i was fine with just that one woman i wonder how many other women in his adult life have. also been harassed or worse by him the first the first accusation should should be enough to have him would withdraw withdrawn the second is just now embarrassing at this point it's shameful and he should be gone i mean i hope to accomplish that we start treating these women with with some kind of seriousness and respect i don't think they came out of nowhere i think they were i think they're for real i'm not for ruining anybody's life but if they've ruined these women's if he's ruined these women's lives and we need to talk about this.
10:14 am
one of the accusers is scheduled to testify later this week to the senate judiciary committee in the face of growing hostility kavin on the republicans have indicated they will not give up without a fight neither are these activists. this is still to come on the show the e.u. foreign policy chief announces a plan for allowing europe russia and china to continue doing business with iran but will this go around u.s. sanctions. and the young man who can walk again five years. years after being paralyzed we report on a new device that's offering hope to people with spinal cord injuries. we have some sports and football's governing body fever his name the croatia midfielder luca motorists the world's best male player at an awards ceremony in london. chosen for the prize after helping real madrid win a third consecutive champions league title he was then player of the tournament
10:15 am
while captaining croatia to the country's first ever world cup final in the women's category brazilian great marta took the award for a sixth time she scored thirteen goals as orlando pride reached the playoffs and she kept in brazil to victory in the copa america. and joining me now in the studio for more on the fifi awards is a limo talkie from good of you sports good morning ali muff what made mode rich the shining star this year to appreciate moderates you have to think of him as a maestro and one of the two top qualities of a maestro maestro can lead a maestro can dictate and it was the creative genius of modern age that basically led to croatia to a world cup final he was his country's most important player and then you look at what he's done at club level he helped reale madrid to win a champions league champions league title that's the fourth season in a row and you know and that's also because his vision is key to that success and i
10:16 am
think what i find so refreshing about him winning is that you have a mix that's being recognized and oftentimes the reason why strikers and forwards tend to dominate this award is because the award is biased towards gold so goals you know you can put a number on them but often times the skill and the value of a. midfield defendo goalkeeper a lot more difficult to quantify it is wonderful to see a midfielder who shows it is and you know when you look back at past awards it's always been an old or messy since two thousand and seven i would argue at the end of an era of looking like you know no no no no no where for this this rivalry is far from over and that's because you know both of these players are now in their thirty's but as they say thirty is the new twenty year and messi and ronaldo they continue to play at the highest level i mean their performances haven't even diminished and they still in mean they are two of the best you know of all time and if we look at second best right now the players that kind of come to mind you think
10:17 am
of ok even has you think of name ah but then you like but these so pale in comparison to these two so i always say this is a rivalry i'm telling you we should enjoy the next few years because it doesn't come often that we have to play is born around the same time where we get to enjoy him because there's no button in football once it's over over it's. ok so there's a pause button right now for her and although our message is you know. what about the women's award marta fantastic six six years in a row now and i think that might as well like she is look she's an exceptional player she's a football legend there's no doubt about that for many she's even considered to be the best team in football or of all time but let's be fair here if you look at it this year i mean she's had it decent season but when you look at the likes of germany midfielder jennifer dunn you take a look at norway's. you know who played a crucial role in leone winning the women's champions league final you have to ask
10:18 am
yourself you know this is not to take away from from my tab but at the same time she had a good season but not the best ok limit thanks very much ring us up to date a date on the fifth or words to that. now to a breakthrough in the united states or scientists are reporting success in helping patients with paralysis to stand and even to take steps again it's all thanks to an electrical implant that literally zaps the spinal cord along with months of intensive rehab this research is giving new hope to people suffering from spinal cord injuries. one step at a time jared chin ok is able to walk again five years after an accident that left him paralyzed to be able to move. my legs and. to walk even a stand it means a lot. that there is hope for not only me but other people.
10:19 am
ok as one of three patients taking part in two separate studies in the united states has managed to walk again albeit assisted. the twenty nine year old was the first patient at the mayo clinic in minnesota to have an electrical stimulation device implanted near his damaged spinal cord. the original function of the electrical stimulator was to treat chronic pain. but it's being used experimentally to try to activate dormant circuitry in the spinal cord. and allow movement. because we were able to stimulate directly the spinal cord itself and we believe that that was very important to be able to regain the volitional control or voluntary control and just one month after surgery commute his toe on his own again he underwent forty three weeks of intense physical therapy and stimulator adjustments at one therapy session managed to walk the length of

a football field but for him it's not about the distance. the whole full side of maybe i'll gain that where i can leave the wheelchair behind even if it is to walk. to the refrigerator and back in his hometown hero like not very far. and hope is watching it is given to those with spinal injuries who never thought standing up. or walking would ever be possible again. from tassie breakthrough over to guard now in dark clouds gathering for the german economy yeah it's hard to believe really because the german economy has been doing so well recently growth is solid unemployment is on record lows companies report bumper figures but there are legitimate worries strums trade policies and briggs's among them companies like dime learned siemens are also worried about their business with iran since u.s. president on trump is reinstated economic sanctions against tehran over its nuclear
10:21 am
program due to those sanctions transactions campian made through the international banking system but the e.u. has found a way to trade with iran and to save the nuclear trade nuclear deal of the same time. federica mother really believes she's found the solution the e.u. foreign affairs commissioner wants to continue doing business with iran by developing a new financial institution in new york she met with the remaining signatories of the iran nuclear agreement and presented her model. that but disciplines welcomed practical proposals to month tain and develop payment channels notably the initiative to establish a special third of a call to facilitate payments related to a dance exports including oil and imports which will assist and reassure economic operators they're seeing legitimate business with. the creation of this new monetary transfer system to continue trading with iran is intended to save the
10:22 am
nuclear agreement this would prevent banks involved in those transactions from becoming targets of u.s. sanctions themselves european companies would then have the ability to trade with iran again at least when it comes to payment transactions. promising but iran is not the only worry on the minds of german business leaders today the big wigs of german industry are meeting chancellor merkel in berlin for their annual. german government possibly do to help. you to speak with our correspondent stephen beard things at the make it meeting stephen what are german business leaders expecting to hear from the chancellor today. i think what they want to hear is that there is more political stability coming less turmoil and of course we talk about international in terms of relations with the u.s. in terms of iran sanctions which the piece mentions russia sanctions all these things that do affect your businesses and hit their bottom lines but also interestingly this is really about domestic german politics as well the government
10:23 am
here has had a lot of in-fighting it's been weakened multiple times and it's seen as a bit rudderless at a time when a strong direction is needed in a time of so much turmoil now dieter camphor you can see behind me he's the president of the association of german industries he started this statement today by actually talking about the need for inclusion in society and that of course refers to cabinets and some of the migrant activities we've seen there some of the far right that's interesting that that's how he leads this the german brand itself german politics is really on the minds here german domestic stability is on the minds of industries here as well as breaks it and all these things that we've talked about before of course. the business thank you very much we're going to come back to you later on as the chancellor has spoken there thank you. instagram's co-founder kevin size drum and mike krieger quit their jobs as c.e.o.
