this is d. w. news coming to you live from berlin the calls for germany's catholic church to take responsibility for decades of sex abuse against children a new report reveals thousands of cases of sexual assaults and cover ups the country's justice minister wants to see criminal charges brought against those responsible also coming up number six was sold to anyone kavanagh's nomination to the supreme court under attack again as a second woman makes allegations of sexual misconduct protesters are calling on him
12:01 pm
to address in detail the accusation. plus we meet a young man who can walk again five years after he was paralyzed a scientific breakthrough is helping patients with spinal cord injuries stand and even walk again with the help of an implanted device. with. hello i'm terry martin welcome to the program catholic church officials are set to release a report detailing thousands of sexual abuse cases here in germany and that report will be presented later today during a meeting of the german bishops conference but some of its key findings have already been leaked to the public the study found priests had abused more than three and a half thousand children and teens in germany over seventy years the victims were mostly male. and or mostly children over well over one and
12:02 pm
a half thousand priests are accused of committing those crimes critics of the study as well as its authors the authors themselves say the true scale of the abuse was probably far greater. off for more on this let's bring in martin guy keys our religious affairs analyst and has been covering this story for quite some time in different countries it must be said martin first of all how could so many priests get away with such serious crimes here in germany for so long they we have two elements on the one hand we have a lack of political will in many much of germany i mean the couple of church has been extremely extremely strong and very much involved in the political system but then on the other hand i think that we can also talk about a social confabulation in a way i mean many if things happen and this is started that is repeated from country to country because communities families parents grandparents etc essentially turn
12:03 pm
a blind eye or tended to trust the priest and trust the church the result of that is that we have a large mass of days of sexual abuse but we also know what he's one more step in a clear pattern of cover up now the cases that are in this report which is being presented today they are anonymous how can we expect german law enforcement authorities to deal with this well the german the german system has to actually put in the men for evidence and i think that this is sort of the this point is really has become you know the end of but the end game of pretty much is entire conversation the question is will the church before be forced to give evidence to national authorities across the board not only in germany so that criminal investigations going to actually commends and there can be redress but more so there can be actually a stop to farther sexual abuse that might actually be perpetrated by these people some of them say an activity martin stay with us we're going to come back to in
12:04 pm
just a moment because the relations of child sex abuse in the church has led many catholics to question their faith our reporter found that both german churchgoers and priests are shocked by the scope of the crimes. peter phablet. getting ready for sunday mass it used to be the highlight of his week but the catholic priest feels different now the catholic church is caught up in a major sexual abuse scandal and father worries. things sometimes i wonder what people really think about me how they view my work as a priest and do this sometimes think i wonder if everything is all right with them by the. revelations that more than three and a half thousand children fell victim to clergy have caused shock and outrage among germans everywhere the parishioners here and no exception. as
12:05 pm
a human. deeply shocked that the church has struck through some of the rock for decades from my point of view the guilty really must be hunted down not only in the church long but also under the criminal law some of the insulation off the streets and i'm very sad and i'm still angry about it. one issue being looked at is the obligatory oath of celibacy for catholic priests and bishops according to the study celibacy is a risk factor leading to abuse if you note after it does it's and i'm not a viewer of the publishing celibacy i think that would reduce the abuse it does on the fucking on does is not the solution it's not the reason for the abuse this type of abuse also exists outside the church there's a lipsey isn't imposed. for the family it's understands that people are angry but he himself doesn't see celibacy as the cause of the problem he says what's needed is a better coordinated effort by the church to prevent abuse in the future. so martin
12:06 pm
we've got this report it's pretty damning it's really frightening what might change in the church as a result of this i mean you know most of the assertions coming out. if the church really over the last fourteen years have been avowed lost of crust and lost off a century lost of believers i mean people still going to church this seems to be a problem because i mean the moral the moral groan cannot be based on the question of the church losing customers or the church losing public there is something very concrete here we're talking about children being molested children being raped that change really has to have to do with criminal investigations and essentially redress but also preventing further crimes for that one main question at stake is that turning off evidence and documents to national authorities very snowy weather the sky possible at this point until these actually becomes
12:07 pm
a reality now the pope understand has made a statement just a short while ago he's in a stone iraq now on a on a trip and he said that the head of the reports public cation he said that sex scandals are turning young people away from the church of course not just young people but what is he the pope as the head of the church proposing to do well you know i think that this is true it is turning people away from the church but it's a matter of fact i think as i was just saying i mean i think that this is the very wrong angle of approach the question here is not whether the church actually can keep its legitimacy this is not about the state of the church this about essentially the victims and the need for justice so in a way the men's from victims groups from a vocal see groups from people that are observing this but also from many legal legal you know legal operators i mean including including here in germany is that the church actually participates and opens itself to criminal investigations this is now the main question will the church actually turn evidence to national
12:08 pm
authorities martin thank you very much i'm sure we're going to be hearing a lot more on this story as the details become known martin. religious affairs analyst thanks don. now sue some other stories making headlines around the world today the world health organization is warning that the ebola outbreak in the democratic republic of congo could rapidly spread in the coming weeks attacks by armed groups some community resistance to back the nations as well as the geographic reach of the virus could create a perfect storm according to the w.h.o. . sweden's prime minister stuff on has been ousted in a no confidence vote about two thirds of the parliament voted against the law then who leads the country's social democrats his departure comes two weeks after elections that saw historic gains for far right politicians. and new zealand's first baby has made her international debut the in new york the three month old to

a protest against the supreme court nominee. that. it takes a village to bring down a supreme court nomination and that's what these protesters at the u.s. capitol are asking for. allegations of sexual misconduct have cast a pall over brett kavanaugh president trumps nominee to the supreme court in the era of me to these people aren't taking it lightly it's time to listen to women it's been time to listen to women like thousands of years at this point but finally since the women's march that was the largest global demonstration in world history we're actually coming together it's no longer he said he said but i believe that men should be held accountable and should do anything in their power to correct any injustice is that they have committed in there. yes. i believe that hiding behind power and patriarchy is wrong and i believe that men should stand up if they have committed wrongs and admit that. the protest was court made by several different

but i was fine with just that one woman i wonder how many other women in his adult life have. also been harassed or worse by him the first the first accusation should should be enough to have him would withdraw withdrawn the second is just now embarrassing at this point it's shameful and he should be gone i mean i hope to accomplish that we start treating these women with with some kind of seriousness and respect i don't mean we came out of nowhere i think there were i think there for real i'm not for ruining anybody's life but if they grew in these women's if he's ruined these women's lives and we need to talk about this. one of the accusers are scheduled to testify later this week to the senate judiciary committee in the face of growing hostility having on the rip. the fans have indicated they will not give up without a fight neither are these activists. brett kavanaugh his nomination hearing is just one of two political showdowns in the u.s.

including oil and imports which will assist and reassure economic operators they're saying legitimate business with. the creation of vishnu monetary transfer system to continue trading with iran is intended to see the nuclear agreement this would prevent banks involved in those transactions from becoming targets of u.s. sanctions themselves european companies would then have the ability to trade with iran again at least when it comes to payment transactions. a big day for business leaders here in germany that gathered for an annual meeting in berlin where they have the ear of the german chancellor to express. was asked by the leadership of the federation of german industry to swiftly address tax and financial policy to avoid a slow slowdown of your eurozone largest economy germany's economy remains buoyant boss concerns are mounting about political stability at home and threats to growth

abroad including britain's departure from the e.u. next year and frets to global trade. correspondent stephen business is at that conference here in berlin stephen the chancellor just spoke did she have anything to offer to ease the worries of business leaders. here heard i think she she made a point of addressing a lot of their particular concerns at least by topic she highlighted such things as staying ahead electric autos are trying to keep pace with china for example creating battery cell technology here that's something that she wants to see here and she highlighted the challenges of course with digitisation and some of the frustrations that people have but she also placed herself firmly in a multilateral. sort of a structural environment here in terms of she stands with the e.u. on their course with bryce as she stands with the e.u. and their course with dealing with the u.s. when it comes to trade issues and generally everyone here is very much in line with that that can be frustrating though for some of the tax reforms that you mentioned
12:21 pm
for example corporate rates here are seen as way too high merkel says that she wants to see what everyone else in the neighborhood sort of say is doing before she tackles that on her own scene earlier you spoke to detect camp head of the federation of the german industry is a how did that speech go down with the target audience what is he still concerned about. i think he heard a lot to like i think he also knows that she has to address some of these issues in a very sort of general way and that a lot of things are frankly out of her hands i asked him what he saw as the biggest threat right now and he said that for one thing it's the sort of the sort of tit for tat trade disputes that are going on the attempts of nations to act outside of the multilateral system of course a reference to the u.s. and china in this case with counterterrorist but he said also domestically there's a huge issue with the regime with the government here being unable to really govern
12:22 pm
effectively and sort of lead and sort of infighting that's a huge concern for him and of course some of the debates and some of the protests by right wing extremists here that also threatens to damage the german brand here and that's incredibly important to business leaders here stephen bits there in berlin thank you very much. instagram's co-founders kevin sites from and my credo have quit their jobs as c.e.o. and chief technical officer at the photo sharing app in a statement they said they were ready for the next chapter as they transition from quote leaders to two uses inability. their resignation comes as a blow to parent company facebook which in some. six years ago the deal reportedly allowed instagram to continue to be run independently but insiders say the co-founders felt they were not being given enough autonomy. let's bring in our financial correspondent paul brits on the subject how important

is instagram for facebook. to get heard instagram is becoming more and more important for facebook as its core product facebook is stuck with people like you i know you're still on facebook but a lot of younger people are not there's actually an exodus of people eighteen to twenty nine recent study has shown about fifty percent of those in the u.s. have deleted the app during this year that was marked by scandals like the. it's use of user data. and the spread of false information and quite frankly the network kind of getting old on the other hand instagram is booming it's supposed to bring in eight billion dollars of revenue this year when it was bought for only one billion. twenty twelve so that's a success story losing the creative heads behind that is
12:24 pm
a blow on the one hand on the other hand it might be an opportunity for mark zuckerberg to have more influence on the network and try to help to boost the core product facebook again by creating links between the networks. facebook used to private selves for very few very few executives actually leave the. things changing. yeah winds of change here only in april we had the headlines of whatsapp founder young koum also leaving. mother company of facebook's for a very similar reasons too much influence from work and there's been a lot of other more quiet exits the v.p. of partnerships has a communications top lawyers and its chief security officer also left the company overall nine exits minimum so there may be more trouble in the background at
