gorbachev and the opportunities for peace we still starts oct third on d w. this is due to readers live from berlin is china meddling in u.s. elections present all job search as it is because china doesn't like his trade policy which involves slapping tariffs on chinese exports to the u.s. we'll have coverage of trump's address to the u.n. security council also coming up but chancellor angela merkel suffers an unexpected blow to her authority she puts on
5:01 pm
a brave face as her party oust one of her key allies critics say this could be the beginning of the end of the miracle era. of iraq thank you so much for joining our special live coverage of u.s. president donald trump has accused china of interfering in america's upcoming midterm elections well president trump made the charge as he opened a meeting of the u.n. security council in new york he offered no avid evidence to back up that accusation but said china did not want him to win the election because of his tough line on trade with china on child also commented on north korea saying talks were making positive progress behind the scenes and that he. specked it very good news to come
5:02 pm
out in the coming months all right lots to dissect and talk about to find out how president transfer formants as the chair of the security council went down i'd like to bring in our colleague one of our nominee in new york and with me here in the studio is nicole ranvir an associate fellow at the german council on foreign relations. i want to start off with alexander who is in new york for us on a yesterday the u.s. president's address drew laughs when he touted his administration's achievements what was the reaction from the dignitaries a gather there today. well it was interesting to be there it's a day in the security council meeting where. everyone was waiting for president to arrive and when he arrived he seemed to be very serious very concentrated before he started he speech he was talking to the u.s.
5:03 pm
ambassador to the united nations nikki haley who was a parent who was apparently giving him some last advice and during his speech you could see the dignitaries the table sort of stone say listen the to the president who was once again we have to sort of tolerating his accomplishments talking about the actions he's administration has taken to counter the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction not a koan to get back to you here in the studio i mean this was largely about iran at least a partially i would say but north korea also featured very largely absolutely i mean most of the things he said today he already said yesterday that of course there will be sanctions implemented even tougher ones on iran and that. the
5:04 pm
relationship with north korea is improving and so with the results that he stayed incredibly vague on you know how will he how we measure the success of his sicko she ations with with north korea remarkably we also have that sound bite of that moment when he talks about her relationship with the north korean and let's play that tape and hear exactly how he described that relationship the syrian regime's butchery is enabled by russia and iran the iranian regime exports violence terror and turmoil it illicitly procures sensitive items to advances ballistic missile program and proliferates these missiles all across the middle east the regime is the world's leading sponsor of terror and fuels conflict across the region and far beyond. and
5:05 pm
my apologies that was the wrong sound bite and we're going to look for it and play it for you the moment that president trump described his new budding friendship almost with the north korean leader iran of course. xander if i may come to you he had a lot of blistering things to say about it it was the reason why the civil war in syria keeps grinding on was because of. something that we expected him to say. yes i think so old what we heard today was exactly the war to. be expected at the same time we have to say that it was very striking to me at least that it was. interesting that he did mention russia and this context but then concentrate to move on talking only about iran and not only about russia's role in syria in the conflict and its support for the syrian regime and it was actually the
5:06 pm
french president who talked about russia and its role in syria right stark contrast there the other thing of course that i think jumped out at all of us want to give this one to you was his mention of china let's see if we have that sound bite for you and play what he said exactly about china as a suppose it role in meddling in the upcoming u.s. midterm elections regrettably we found that china has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming twenty eight teen election coming up in november against my administration they do not want me or us to win because i am the first president ever to challenge china on trade and we are winning on trade we are winning at every level. we don't want them
5:07 pm
to meddle or interfere in our coming election that is quite remarkable there i mean how unusual is this new call it in terms of diplomacy to go there on the world stage and and accuse china of meddling in the u.s. mid-term election is pretty unusual and the fact is that everybody now looks at you know what comes out of the mill and this to gay sions on the involvement of russia with the presidential elections it's interesting that he tries to shift the attention to what's china where he has a trade war going on which is not always popular in the united states a lot of small or medium companies especially the high technology companies are dependent on material equipment from china at this point so they don't like the very tough stance the president is taking right now is meeting he fears that this kind of electorate might damage the midterm elections not to his supporters that
5:08 pm
alexander won give you the last and final word what was his his his tone like. well i think that during the security council session he pretty much presented himself really as a statesman someone who wanted to show the accomplishments of his administration someone who is committed to achieving a peaceful solutions however as we said to sort of really mentioning russia in the context of syria and then accusing china of trying to meddle in the upcoming elections death will be something we i think that. the reason that's that the president is going to face a lot of criticism here in the united states for not mentioning russia and then for the accusing china as our guest said trying to shift the attention from russia and
5:09 pm
its meddling to china and is he would he support this for what it's becoming a maybe in the upcoming elections in which the democrats seem to be in the lead on a front i'm reporting from new york and call run for it associate fellow at the german council for foreign relations thank you both ladies. art i like to bring up to speed on some of the other stories making news around the world. a danish appeals court has upheld a life sentence for inventor peter mattson he was found guilty of murdering the swedish journalist aboard his homemade submarine last year while massa had appealed to the court for a lifetime sentence. as prime minister shinzo ave has told the u.n. general assembly that he is willing to meet north korean leader kim jong un but he said any such meeting would be devoted to resolving a decades old rao over abductions of japanese civilians by pyongyang.

the wife of malaysia's former prime. minister has appeared before an anti corruption agency when a small man sore was questioned over the alleged misuse of a multi-billion dollar state investment fund police found luxury goods and cash during raids on apartments linked to the family shortly after a husband she presides alexion defeat in may. well back here in germany chancellor angela merkel suffered a serious blow when her parliamentary party rejected her personal choice and close ally to lead the conservative bloc in the parliament all came as somewhat of a surprise both to the chancellor and to the political establishment america is upon us believe it could be the beginning of the end for her fourteen year long chancellorship. the german government's weekly meeting chancellor angela merkel getting to work but is it really business as usual it's the day after the biggest
5:11 pm
defeat of her career her party's parliamentary bloc ousted their longtime leader and one of my closest confidence until now the new party whip was only known as a financial expert he's expected to both stop the conservative parliamentary group self-confidence but this will put chancellor merkel in an even more uncomfortable position says one conservative m.p. i think that she has to come around with affection group that is more self-confident and i think now we gain back a bit more independence and i think that is. slightly challenging because the chancellor will need to fight for her own positions the new group leader promised to listen closely to the input from constituencies and try to downplay the significance of the vote for him and off looking forward to working with. as has
5:12 pm
just been explained there's no daylight between us it will be a close and trusting cooperation just as of how to in recent years. if you had before the vote on the america had urged the conservative m.p.'s to support her and like but to no avail the majority wanted to change the german chancellor acknowledged the outcome is a defeat for the us is. this is democracy and that me. sometimes you lose a vote there is nothing to gloss over but i want the parliamentary group of c.d.u. and c.s.u. to be successful and therefore i will support of those who are of a possible to help. all of position parties declared kodos defeat a clear sign that markets time is coming to an end coalition partner of the social democrats are calling for a return to serious work. mine also have to try urged seriousness in politics we have a global political situation that is rather chaotic germany cannot afford to gamble
5:13 pm
on the contrary we are an anchor of stability also for europe and i expect the seriousness from both the social democratic affairs well as the conservative parliamentary group. but this will take some time yesterday's vote has shaken anglo-american skin surface more than expected. all right let's bring in now our political correspondents maximally on our course good to see you max they're trying to put a brave face on how is that going down well as you just said. watchword in berlin these days is business as usual back to business nothing to see her just move along let's go to work and it's working so fine at the moment as we've just heard at the beginning of the week that that was something merkel already had said the german chancellor had after the latest crisis regarding the domestic intelligence. and already said we need to go back to making the voters' concerns
5:14 pm
being heard and we need to go back to just talking about the politics and the political work that we want to get done and home and and so in that regard everybody in government is kind of seeing this just as a little hiccup but of course the implication is how can they actually put their policy through government policy and in the upcoming weeks and months so why is it so difficult for this coalition to govern. because what we're currently seeing is in the government coalition of the parties both the two conservative parties the c.d.u. marcos party where she's a leader of and the very end conservatives of the sea as you as well as with the social democrats of the s.p.d. that all three parties have been going through in the last year a certain degree of leadership struggle and a certain degree of having to find out what they really want to do so first of all we have the s.p.d. the social democrats which have had an array of leadership struggle just finish that off but still kind of not really knowing as a junior coalition partner where they're standing what they want and then the

conservatives in bavaria the see as you head into election in their federal state and the variant two weeks where there's also expected with their current decreased polling results that they will have a leadership struggle after that and then merkel what as we have seen yesterday where her own faction in palm and isn't following her recommendation on which on the person she wants as the faction leader so we see that there's also a shift of the base is the backbenchers challenging the challenge of the chancellor and with all these properties not having the backing of their backbenchers in parliament it's difficult for them to put their policies through with in as a government coalition now some macs have described where that happened as an affront to a chance. america what does this all mean for her position. well it's certainly going to be interesting to see how she's going to come out of this in the upcoming
