this is due. to human wrongs and a big win on the european pitch for germany's football fans. so. the host of the four. will beat germany. today germany in the competition to host the twenty twenty four european football championships turkey's problematic record on human rights may have been the reason that it's. also coming out. with what degree of certainty do you believe kevin all
9:01 pm
this old. one hundred one hundred or so professor christine lazy ford tells us senators she was sexually assaulted by president supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh he calls the accusation an attempt to smear his record and keep him off the nation's highest court. good to have you with us we begin tonight with a winner and a loser in european football today germany clenched the right to host football's european championships in twenty twenty four it will be the first time since the two thousand and six world cup that germany hosts a major soccer event the announcement was made by european football's governing body due a five this afternoon. so there you would off the host of the euro two thousand and
9:02 pm
four. we beat germany. everybody's members of u.a.e. has executive committee decided that turkey's attempt to host the european championships was simply too risky germany will be hoping that they can repeat the success of their world cup tournaments which was praised for its organization way back in two thousand and six we remember those days will always be here from our sport this is here to help us explain what happened today i mean germany are the hoose of europe twenty twenty four that not a big surprise is it now it is and i mean there were favorites to begin with but then near the end it did look like this was going to be a very close vote and germany of course the safe choice i mean everything that you look for in a hole was germany had they have i mean the masters of organization you know
9:03 pm
they've hosted previous like sporting events track and field events you know and picks everything that they. and of course don't have the infrastructure and the transportation they have the stadiums i mean germany they basically ready to even host tomorrow if they had to and politically and also politically politics and politically they're also not most stable the economy compared to turkey and the idea of human rights and human rights being respected that continues to be a problem in turkey and we've been hearing reports of that could have been the reason why you wait for decided not to give it to turkey i mean this is obviously for you a for this was the first time that in their decision making process that human rights was going to play a role but still at the end i mean you a phase of business and as much as you would like to think it's sometimes wishful thinking to think that it really was human rights i honestly think it was it had more to do with the fact that i think the risk was just too big for ford to turkey host i mean the euro has dropped and i think what is it they its value has has
9:04 pm
dropped. i think politically the situation there is so precarious and we don't know what's going to happen then six years from now and also i think they were just afraid that maybe the few of investments and also turkey in a campaign they had made these promises of tax breaks of allowing. a five to basically rent free let them use the stadiums and i think now that they see you know economically how they doing they probably knew that a lot of that was not going to happen so they got in also one of i mean turkey is so close to syria and one of the host cities was going to be close to syria and we don't know what's going to geopolitically we don't know right now in the assessment report on turkey i understand that was done by the way but it was not made public right so we really don't know what's what the big risk factors were were just guessing there but when you're talking about money the euro it had to play
9:05 pm
a big role didn't it i mean let's hope we can romanticize football all we want but at the end it does come down to money and even like the president if you a for has not shied away from that and if you look at it i mean they even said that if you look at the overall capacity of all of the stadiums in germany at the end they would have had around two hundred seventy to three hundred thousand more seats and seats of course equals more tickets equals more money and those people making the decision those people voting at the end all the member states so they know that however profitable this event is going to be at the end you know the money more money ends up in their own pockets so i resisted yeah that's right should be the money works and everybody gets a living talking from our sports desk aleem as always they are. an extraordinary senate hearing is underway in washington d.c. that could seal the fate of president trump's nominee for the u.s. supreme court brett kavanaugh is facing multiple allegations of sexual misconduct
9:06 pm
his initial accuser christine lacy ford has now ended her testimony she gave an emotional a calendar the evening on which she says cavanaugh tried to rape or when they were both teenagers but dr ford also repeatedly stated that she is one hundred percent certain that her attacker was judged heaven on here is an excerpt from dr ford's testimony can you tell us what you don't forget about that night in the stairwell the living room the bedroom the bed on the right side of the room as you walk into the room there is that bed to the right. the bathroom in close proximity. the laughter the uproarious laughter. and the multiple attempts to escape and the final ability to do so. that was dr
9:07 pm
christine ford there the laughter that's what people have been talking about today that was so gruesome in her testimony dr ford's testimony comes a day after a third woman accused judge kavanaugh of sexual misconduct in his youth he has rejected all the allegations against him and he is about to testify in fact there is video of him live pictures of him approaching the senate committee chamber ballistic this story over to washington d.c. right now our correspondent maya sweeter is on the story boards good afternoon to you. let's talk about what has happened christine blasi forward she finished her testimony before one time around lunch time how did she do. as you said it was very emotional and alternately very credible i don't think there
9:08 pm
was a person who was in that chamber who didn't walk out thinking that something happened to her and many republicans when asked by reporters afterwards said yes i believe that something happened to her even though many of them are still sticking by this nominee and this is going to be a challenge for judge kavanaugh as he steps up to the plate metaphorically here because she did come across as so believable on her account it was so riveting and compelling we should say he is now going to have to has this task if he wants to save his nomination and ultimately get to the supreme court yes to try to separate himself from her in the minds of these people who are judging him he's going to be saying things like you need to pay attention to me and my character he's going to invoke his catholic faith if there is really no easy way for him to undercut this and all eyes right now are going to be on three very key republican you go let me let me just in the range of more you know to let you know what we're looking at
9:09 pm
right now we're putting in large pictures now from inside the committee chamber and judge that we have been on he's sitting there you see them are there he could say bill preparing to testify as you were saying if you're this is make or break for him and i think the stakes are even higher now because of how will. dr ford did earlier in the day with her testimony when you were green. was absolutely the consensus has been that she was extremely credible and there have also been reports that president trump himself was watching her testimony and reportedly has not been happy with the way that it's coming across in the way it has in fact undercut his nominee whether or not trump is going to actually ask him to step aside remains to be seen but we have to also see how cavanagh if cavanagh manages to credibly remove himself from this situation and michael i'm going to ask you you
9:10 pm
know you were watching it just like we were the. republicans on the committee they hired a sex crimes prosecutor with years of experience to actually conduct the questioning for them during the examination of dr christine forward that was unusual and there had been a lot of criticism of that before had what's your take on it did it work to the advantage of the republicans on the committee or did it help the case of dr forward . i think in this case it did not do them any favors the optics of the situation would not have looks good to have a panel of these white republican elder statesmen questioning this woman as to whether or not she really believes that this happened so many years ago so they have this other woman who looks like a very friendly face to questioner for them but the the format of the questioning
9:11 pm
partially got in their way and also what they were trying to do with the line of questioning that the prosecutor rachel mitchell took was to paint dr ford as some sort of political operative someone who was upon of the democrats which is an allegation that doctors are very strong loyalist is mine and. let me interrupt you michael we're going to go now to. one of my judge kavanaugh he is speaking now let's take a listen my statement less than two weeks ago dr ford publicly accused me of committing wrongdoing at an event more than thirty six years ago when we were both in high school i deny the allegation immediately categorically in unequivocally. all four people allegedly at the event including dr ford's long time friend miss cause or have said they recall no such event her
9:12 pm
longtime friend miss cars are said under penalty of felony that she does not know me and does not believe she ever saw me at a party ever. here's the quote from this cause or attorney's letter quote simply put this cause or does not know mr cavanaugh all she has no recollection of ever being at a party or gathering where he was present with or without dr ford and quote think about that fact the day after the allegation appeared i told this committee. that i wanted a hearing as soon as possible to clear my name i demanded a hearing for the very next day unfortunately it took the committee ten days to get to this hearing in those ten long days as was predictable and
9:13 pm
as i predicted my family and my name have been totally and permanently destroyed. by vicious and false additional accusations could ten days away it's been harmful to me and my family to the supreme court and to the country when this allegation first arose i welcomed any kind of investigation senate f.b.i. or otherwise the committee now has conducted a thorough investigation and i've cooperated fully i know that any kind of investigation senate f.b.i. gummy county police whatever will clear me listen to the people i know listen to the people of known me my whole life listen to the people i've grown up with and worked with and played with and coached with and dated and taught and
9:14 pm
gone to games with and had beers with and little listen to the witnesses who allegedly were at this event thirty six years ago listen to miss kaiser she does not know me i was not at the party described by dr ford this confirmation process has become a national disgrace the constitution gives the senate an important role in the confirmation process but you have replaced advice and consent with search and destroy. since my nomination in july there's been a frenzy on the left to come up with something anything to block my confirmation shortly after i was nominated the democratic senate leader said he would quote hold of an all in washington d.c.
9:15 pm
a visibly angry mr cavanaugh defending his reputation but saying that the name his name and the name of his family has been permanently destroyed in the ten days since the first accusation of a sexual assault was made against him we'll have complete coverage of the hearings at the top of the hour and in the day i hope to see you in about forty five minutes . we make up over a week what time zone is that and that's because we are the seventy seven percent. want to shape the continent's future to be part of it and joining some stores as they share their stories their dreams and their challenges this is the seven percent platform for africa.
