make the investigation harder thank you very much thank you tom and story now where turkish president. is wrapping up a controversial state visit to germany today the visit was meant to create harmony between berlin and ankara but it's been marred by their differences of a human rights as well as mass street protests against visit demonstrations are underway for a second day today this time in the western city of cologne which is busy which is where to one is visiting this afternoon this shuttle to open the city's new central mosque a number of everyone supporters among germany's turkish community of also been gathering to welcome here. and for more on this i'm now joined here in studio by the chief foreign policy editor. and from cologne is my colleague simon young welcome to you both so simon would like to begin with you clearly a controversial visit and supporters and critics of. gathering in cologne today
3:16 pm
what's the security situation there like. it's been pretty tense here today. the police are very concerned that there shouldn't be any breaches of security there's a huge cordon around this mosque building that i hope you can see just behind me near here protesters or should i say just supporters of president at one have turned out in their hundreds to show their appreciation for the man that many of them refer to as our president after all many of them hold both german and turkish citizenship and many have come from cities around germany to be here and do that or a bit disappointed they haven't been allowed to demonstrate directly in front of the mosque but that is for security reasons and there are other demonstrations against president being held across cologne the biggest one several kilometers from

here on the other side of the river rhine where three or four thousand people i believe many of them kurdish and demonstrators have gathered. now simon this one that he'll be visiting we know a little bit about it it's one of the largest in the europa tell us the significance of it in the context of german takesh relations. i think this is a real focus of tensions in a focus for this visit particular because of the organization behind it has called d.t. which is one of the umbrella islamic organizations here in germany that looks after large parts of the muslim community runs. nine hundred mosques in addition to this one that's the largest in germany and some people say the largest mosque complex in all of europe when it's officially open the softer name by president and one is got space for about
3:18 pm
a thousand male worshippers in the main part of the building and some hundreds of female worshippers who have to. confine themselves to a balcony on the first floor this organization d.t. it is controversial because many people say that it has become a sort of extended on of the turkish state that it's called for. turks living in germany to spy on their fellow citizens to report on their political affiliations and many suggest that to date it was once used to be a mediating organization is in some way become a symbol of division and did it today indeed at this opening ceremony ease underlining that by you know calling on who want to come here and possibly inviting him to speak in a way that will focus on links with turkey rather than talking about the role of islam here in germany all right said i just want to come to you now obviously
3:19 pm
president out of one's itinerary began earlier this morning when he had a working breakfast with chancellor merkel what was the edge on the agenda well of course the important topics are the german citizens that are imprisoned in turkey that was one of the most important topics that they had to discuss today but and of course in the press conference chancellor merkel emphasized on the differences that germany and turkey has so the situation of human rights in turkey the lack of rule of law so these were all topics that were important for germany and for chance to merkel that the same time of course they have to discuss security they have to discuss energy they have to discuss economy ties so there are a lot of topics that which the to leaders had to talk today. speaking of differences last night we did see some some tension of the dinner with a president from fatah steinmeyer diplomatic tensions seemingly spilling out in the open can you tell us more about that well yes president. made a speech and where he said he's worried about the german citizens that are in
3:20 pm
prison turkey but then he said i'm not only worried about them but i'm also worried about the turkish people that are in prison that the journalists the lawyers the politicians and of course the present are gone did not like this criticism so he fired back and then he said well you know we're also not happy that there are according to our don terrorist walking in the streets of germany for that's how it all started ok which begs me to ask why is one such a diplomatic challenge for germany what he's an important partner he's a person that germany has to deal with the two countries are tied together historically economically culturally so germany has to find a way to deal with the turkey at the same time turkey needs germany in multiple issues turkey's economy is in trouble it needs support it needs investment so are doing is looking for that but at the same time he doesn't want to step back from the problems that turkey is having on human rights and rule of law so it's very
3:21 pm
difficult to find a balance where the two countries can find common ground and continue the dialogue right i want to go back to someone young who is in cologne right now so simon eddo one is due to give a speech as part of the mosque inauguration are we expecting more controversy there . well as i say people are upset about the way that this opening ceremony has been planned by d.j. upand many local politicians for instance the mayor of cologne under state premier of north rhine-westphalia where we are both have said they won't come to this ceremony there are fears that mr everyone will speak to his supporters and will encourage them to as i said draw the. no they're affiliation to turkey rather than talking about dialogue and integration which is much more the kind of tenor that the german authorities would like to hear in connection of course with the position of islam an important religion within germany. now simon elder one had to change
3:22 pm
his meeting location in cologne at the very last minute because the one castle where he was initially shuttle to hold talks he was not granted permission by the site's owner what does that tell us about germans reaction to his visit here and their feelings towards him. here with that was a meeting as i said between mr herder one and the state premier of northern north rhine-westphalia which was supposed to happen in one place i think what such protests in opposition and awkwardness by some people i suppose you could call it shows is that not everybody far from everybody is happy with the way that this state visit has come about some people say it's wrong to roll out the red carpet for an autocratic dictatorial president at a time when he's holding german citizens as political prisoners in these jails and
3:23 pm
you know these high level political meetings have had to be shunted around and the timetable of this visit has been at times are unclear i think for that reason because not everyone has played board as it were even though of course the governments in the state authorities in berlin of try to make the visit go as smoothly as possible all right said i just want to come back to you and one has made it clear what he wants from the german government and the job and government has also said what they want prisoners in exchange do you think either parties will get what they want here i believe this is just a first step of dialogue in the previous years we've seen extreme tension between the two countries and it was well too hopeful to see. soon that this one visit would make things good again so i believe this is a first step for the two countries just to start talking at the end of october there's going to be a. group of people with also with the economy minister will be drum germany will be
3:24 pm
going to turkey they're going to hold talks so they're going to continue try and talk about what they can do together increase economy ties maybe but at the same time talking again about the problems on the ground in turkey so this is basically i believe a first step in getting the relations back on track and do you think that realistically that the relationship between germany and turkey could get to as the turkish president said wait used to be well i think that's difficult because there are a lot of issues that they have to solve and it really starts with like we started we just talked about at the beginning about the german citizens being in prison in turkey and the scenes that are gone is not at the moment willing to find a solution to that so that is the huge that we lived at with the situation of the journalist after he was freed and then michel it's all there was able to travel back to germany and then we had. the human rights activists who also came back to germany so that started a good momentum in the relations but there's still

a long way to go for them to be fully functioning again to foreign policy and it's has had a sad and from cologne my colleagues i'm one young thank you both. as now have a look at sports and wonderfully go fourth place here to berlin hosted first place by munich and berlin one giving the bavarians their first loss of the season the home team took advantage hard fall by biased your own board taking in the early going dad the base of each successfully converted from the penalty spot in the twenty second minute and there was plenty to celebrate in front of a sold out crowd because andrey duda then doubled the burly leaves just before halftime. and it was his fifth goal of the season a rocket of a shot that was too good for goalkeeper manuel neuer barely in defeat by end to new

and moves into a virtual tie at the top of the league. and what does league soccer now after have had drubbed leaders by munich two nil last night there's another big match up on tap today with top man hosting leverkusen in fact totally could leap right over by an end barely into first place with a win but they face a cagey opponent in laver coups and the club is full of talent including one teenager they say is definitely ahead of his time. chi habits just turned one thousand in the summer. and believes he has skills beyond his age he banked in his first goal of the season last sunday so lose time i always try to continue growing because i hope to help the team with my goals and good performances and i think i have it has already played in fifty nine bundestag games the youngest ever to reach that mark and he's caught the eyes of top clubs not only because he's a goal threat but also for his assists as witnessed in wednesday's win over does or

two off have it skills could have an impact against dortmund a team that is on beaten this season after the recent seven no thumping of neuron back mako roy's contribution to goals that night meant say they won't let the easy wind go to their heads. it's not too late as. we know it by live across and as a team with plenty of individual quality that is one of the best in the league. and we want to win there. a victory against leverkusen would not only mean their first win on the road but dortmund could overthrow by on at the top of the table. and i remind you of the top stories we're following for you at least three hundred eighty four people are reported dead in indonesia after an earthquake triggered a tsunami on the island of tsunami city officials warn the death toll could rise significantly as rescue a scramble to reach the stricken region. to fish president rejected
