there had been some confusion here and potentially lives lost as a result of miscommunication that's wild and joining us from to cata thank you. thanks very much tech ish president one is wrapping up a controversial state visit to germany today the visit was meant to ease tensions between berlin and ankara but it's been marred by their differences of a human rights as well as mass street protests against his visit demonstrations are underway for a second day of today this time in the western city of cologne which aired on is visiting this afternoon is shuttle to open the city's new central mosque a number of supporters among germany's turkish community have also been gathering to welcome him. and i'm joined here in studio by get up his tekkie correspondent yulia han and from cologne i'm joined by my colleague simon young thank you both for joining me now simon i'd like to begin with you
4:07 pm
a controversial visit with supporters and critics of egypt tell you are the one gathering in cologne today is the security situation there tense. yes a very concentrated. police operation that we've seen three thousand police deployed on cologne streets and many of the streets around this central mosque that you can see behind me have been closed president everyone is now in the city his motorcade i'm told is passing through the streets streets lined with many supporters and other people who turned out to see him but police are very concerned that everything should go smoothly there are snipers on some of the routes around here the helicopters are buzzing around and the police have got the situation i should say very well under control so far all right someone just to let you know
4:08 pm
that we are seeing pictures of what's happening around you but tell us why particularly this mosque what is its significance. well i think this building this striking building is very important and a central focus really of the visit by president everyone to germany because of the organization behind it which is one of the umbrella islamic organizations here in germany runs about nine hundred mosques across the country and the problem needs from many people's points of view that it takes its instructions directly from turkey from the islamic affairs agency in turkey which is seen as being more or less directly under the control of president and his government many people in germany say that's a negative situation indeed there have been specific allegations that these
4:09 pm
organizations have sought to gather information about the people of turkish origin living in germany there is even a suggestion that the intelligence authorities here want to monitor this organization detail so against all that background a new central mosque the largest mosque in germany that's going to be inaugurated very shortly now here by the president at a one of course it will attract a focus of control the sea for that reason alone but also because of the way this event has been organized with a lot of politicians here in germany saying you know the one is using it as a chance to sort of divide public opinion rather than creating an opportunity for dialogue and bringing people together all right alike to come to you now. to one kicked off his last day of this visit with a working breakfast with chancellor merkel what was on the agenda well probably they were talking again about the economy about business cooperation and trade at
4:10 pm
least that something a president out on set that he wants to use this breakfast to talk business basically because that's one of the main reasons he came. germany his country is dealing with the aftershocks of one of the worst currency crisis in fifteen years inflation is very high it eighteen percent the lira lost forty percent against the euro and the dollar so he needs to regain trust with the european german investors probably they also talked about the situation in syria again the situation in the last rebel held strong hold. on announced yesterday that there would be a four party need in october including the two of them france's mccraw and russia's putin and most probably they were talking about the five german citizens who are still in turkish jails as the german government says for political reasons that's an issue very important to the pointed that out several times but we also know that present out on her and said look i don't and defeat interfere in germany's judicial
4:11 pm
matters so please stop and don't do that with us so that was his on and i think we saw how difficult it is for the two of them to find some kind of common ground and how deep the divisions still are and we saw a little bit of those divisions last night at the dinner with the president steinmeyer diplomatic tensions spilling out into the open what does that tell us well i think this dinner didn't exactly go as missed out on hopes i mean it was a glamorous location and present time i used this occasion again to remind people of the turkish journalist lawyers unionists in jail and missed out on went off script and said you know why are you interfering your these people these journalists were involved in supporting terrorism and they were sentenced by turkish courts so why are you defending defending them so he got very angry and i
4:12 pm
think this really shows the deep divisions that sometimes they're not speaking the same language and there it remains so much to do. to rebuild rebuild trust and kind of reset this german turkish friendship and that's precisely what one had said talked to doing he came on a charm offensive but it was previously he has been a rather critical of berlin of one point accusing brillion of deploying nazi tactics. why the change of heart well the change of heart because all of the economic situation in his country he's looking for a new friends we know turkey and the us have a big conflict now the us have issued sanctions against turkey in summer so he's looking for new friends he want to the nice pictures i suppose here in germany you know he's shaking hands with with merkel he's been received as a statesman this is very important to him and when we look at the front pages of pro-government turks newspapers today that's exactly what they're making out of it
4:13 pm
they had one year ago front pages showing chancellor merkel with nazi symbols now they say it was a one well come here in berlin it's a strong corporation that we're going to see it's a new era with the euro with germany so they're trying to twist it into something very positive and that's really a contras if you compare what the german media or you know german observers are making out of the situation absolutely and also i'm on i want to come back to you know one. is expected to give a speech as part of the most inauguration are we expecting more controversy that. well i think that there could be depending on what he say's there are concerns here that mr everyone will use the opportunity the platform here to speak in a way that talks about turks people of turkish origin here in germany you know as
4:14 pm
people with an affiliation to turkey primarily a lot of people don't like the way he if he speaks about his lawn he seems to think of islam as a sort of extension of he's state or thorazine he's got a very unitarian idea of how the state should be organized with him at the head of it and so on this is these are the criticisms that a lot of people bring forward rather than talking about diversity and in particular in the german context about talking about tolerance and understanding between communities including religious communities because of course is long is an important religion here in germany as well so these are the kind of concerns there are and many senior politicians here in cologne including the mayor of cologne have said that they won't attend this inauguration the softening for that reason and because they don't like the way this whole thing has been organized someone
