5:04 pm
happening there meant to ease tensions between brilliant and ankara but it's been marred by the differences of a human rights as well as mass protests against the ones visit the turkish president has just arrived in the western german city of cologne is delivering a speech at the opening of the city's new central mosque now he's been welcomed by a large crowd of supporters from germany's turkish community nearby at a one critics however staging a separate protest. and i'm now joined here in studio by d.w. sticky correspondent yulia hannan from cologne my colleagues i'm one young thank you both for joining me so simon i'd just like to begin with you because you are right outside the mosque what's the security there like. the security is very tight here the large avenue you can see behind me in front of this new central mosque here in cologne. sealed off there are three thousand police who
5:05 pm
have been part of this operation today we can see special vehicles riot police water cannons there are helicopters circling overhead and snipers on the roofs around here security very tight obviously because of the concerns relating to this state visit by president there the one and the fact that there are demonstrators some of whom you can parrot here in the background who are very unhappy about the fact that everyone is here but also other supporters of everyone who turned out in the in their hundreds and thousands to show that they believe in president they're the one and they want to give him their support. all right simon just remind our viewers that the pictures we're looking at now a live from outside the mosque where president out of one is currently doing delivering his speech in front of his supporters simon we can definitely hear the

protesters behind you can you tell us however what the significance of this particular mosque is. well i think many people here in germany hope that this mosque would as a german its largest islamic mosque would be a sort of symbol of integration and of dialogue and of understanding between the faiths in the different communities that make up germany these days so far those hopes have not necessarily been realized and that's partly because this is a project run by an organization called d.t.f. one of the main. islamic organizations here in germany that runs about nine hundred . but the problem is many people see it is the. it's run from ankara. a lot of its funding from turkey directly and from the islamic. storage
5:07 pm
is there and many people say that that centrally means that it takes its instructions from president and his government and there have been allegations against this organization detail that is for instance encouraged. to pass on information back to turkey about the political allegiances of people here in germany with turkish origins and indeed the intelligence sources here in germany have considered putting detail and special observation itself so there is a lot of controversy swirling around that organization there are also complaints today about the why this inauguration ceremony with president everyone has been organized some saying. should have been a chance for dialogue and stage it seems to have driven the different turkish communities here even further apart than they already were so there is there's trouble around and many people say it's just part of this very troubled
5:08 pm
state visit the president everyone has been making over the last couple of days all right so you hear someone describing the state visit so far as being troubled but is that how you would categorize the breakfast meeting today with captain america i mean the breakfast meeting was of course part of the political talks and when we look at the day yesterday we already saw how difficult it is for them to find some common ground so i think at this breakfast there was no proper press conference so we basically don't know what was on the table but i'm sure they were talking about the economy again about trade relations they are important trade partners there more than seven thousand german companies actually active in turkey and these companies are worried about the political city. as well they might have talked about the situation in syria as it lived the last rebel held stronghold there where they are actually working together to find a way out to find
5:09 pm
a peaceful solution and chancellor merkel and now is that there will be a full party meeting in october including herself president our gun the french president and the russian president but they will most certainly also have talked about the five german nationals who are still in turkish jails as the german government says for political reasons chancellor merkel and everyone including president. made clear that this is an important issue for them and they expect certain developments and in fact i think that president ad one heard a lot of criticism in these two days that he was here in germany more criticism than he should be actually used to in turkey where he doesn't hear much criticism anymore so i think he expect that the whole visit to be easier for him. and. it didn't quite play out it i think we what we saw is that
5:10 pm
there are a stalk to visions that remain and that it's not just you know political leaders pushing a button and then you just reset relations and everything is fine again it's not more difficult so speaking of criticism last night he did manage to escape the state banquet can you tell us what that was a vote well the german president. in his speech used the opportunity again to remind guests and there were more than one hundred guests invited sitting there from turkey from germany he used the opportunity to remind guests of the imprisoned journalists union is flaw is human rights activists in turkey and that's something the president did not expect he had a nice speech prepared talking about the german turkish friendship but when. mr came up with his remarks miss out on went off scripts and had the feeling to he needs to defend himself he got quite angry that's what we got from his speech he
5:11 pm
said basically accused germany of supporting terrorists of hosting terrorists and he also said. journalists who were supporting terrorism in his eyes in turkey and were sentenced by turkish who would say this is something that is up to the turks traditionally and germany has no business you know criticizing that so this was kind of a scandal actually because you wouldn't expect something like this to happen that a glamorous state dinner you know where it's all about you know being nice to each other having dinner together and so on but this was just one of the many scandals we saw in the past two days which makes this visit one of the most controversial statements that's for sure this year all right someone i want to come back to you so you're here telling us about a rather defensive one last night but as he was giving his speech today at this most we're watching him do the right now are we expecting more controversy.
5:12 pm
well it's hard to know as i'm talking to your can't hear the speech i don't know what the ten are all these but there certainly have been concerns in the last few days. german politicians here in cologne for instance who are worried that mr ed or one might not seize the opportunity to talk about dialogue and tolerance and bring communities together that instead he might as he's often done in the past particularly in connection with religious events like this might strike a much more thorough tarion tone a more sort of. cheer leading tone for himself and for his own presidency and appeal to many people of turkish origin here in germany to remember their allegiance to the homeland as he would call it and you know use the platform of this inauguration today essentially to sort of
5:13 pm
make a quasi political speech which is something the german authorities have been unhappy about they're quite happy for the turkish president to come and. appear at an important occasion like this but they don't like the idea that he you know tends to rally a constituency here which are turned out as i said on the streets to show him that welcome and to wave the turkish flag and they don't like the idea that he should he should go further and sort of rail against the german state and the actions of the german government and so those have been the concerns all right so you will hear president after one came here with a mission to mend relations between these two countries and of course that after a period of severely attacking berlin at one point accusing germany of deploying tactics do you think the way i think best. work towards mending this relationship
5:14 pm
at all well i think a big step is the fact that they are talking again in a normal tone the atmosphere is not that overheated any more but of course if you if you are talking about successes now it depends on which perspective you're coming from i think from a german perspective and that's what i get from colleagues from journalists the media reporting now is that this wasn't quite a successful visit it just highlighted basically how profound the differences between the two countries especially when it comes to critical issues democracy human rights still are when you have a look today at the turkish media reporting it's quite different they're trying to highlight the positive things they're trying to emphasize that these two countries are determined to somali issues that divide them they have called this visit historic visit some headlines were saying new era with the euro new era with
5:15 pm
germany they have shown merkel and aragon shaking hands saying this is a it was a warm welcome and there will be a strong cooperation in the future so it's a little bit like two worlds here if you compare that but i have to add these media i'm talking about are that the turkish media landscape by now is overwhelmingly pro-government because of the control of the turkish government exercise of the media landscape so these media are basically reporting in a way that they think will be pleasant to the government they're also critical media as well they have quite some different approaches and but the pro-government media are trying to turn this into a success and finally to use you know this charm offensive did it work germans child and what has been their reaction to this visit. hew whew.
