11:02 am
some survivors to safety. all they want is to get out. some of them have been waiting for days at the airport to get on one of the planes that are bringing in the aid. in unease on forces are constantly airlifting in relief goods things that people here need most water food medication most of all and on the way back they're taking those who are desperately waiting to the old people people who are injured people who've lost their homes women and small children. and going to let you know mia. long run i'm over it and i'm about to give birth. a given moment i heard that it's difficult to still get treatment at the hospital here so i have to go into a bigger city. in the city rescue workers find new bodies every day. the earthquake i think english entire neighborhood.
11:03 am
this is the end of a landslide that's about two kilometers long and that was caused by the earthquake and to understand the sheer force that was unleashed you just have to look at that building up there because that previously wasn't here but some one hundred meters down in that direction it was swept here by the moving soil now there are still some five hundred people believed to be buried here and a lot of the people over here on this side have lost relatives right here and they're waiting for them to be found. irwin lost his mother his brother and his nephew when he saw the earth turned into a swirling board. that. when the ground started moving i went outside. ones and the whole street rose up and it was like a wave and we were swept away. it was like a hole opening up and then slamming shut again.

it would take the wind its residents a long time to recover from what was destroyed in just a matter of seconds. and some wounds may never heal. now to some of the other stories making news around the world today rallies marking one year since catalonia has failed referendum to split from spain and ended in clashes between separatists and police in barcelona earlier pro independence protesters held sit ins and rallies across the region last year's vote was held in defiance of the spanish government and many of the organizers are now behind bars. and prime minister teresa mayes says her country's immigration rules after breaks it will favor skilled migrants over low skilled migrants and that no preferential treatment will be given to e.u. citizen may was speaking on the fringes of the annual conservative party conference taking place in birmingham this week. well germany's coalition government has
11:05 am
reached agreement on immigration reforms designed to make the country more attractive to skilled workers from around the world the late night deal is the first step towards a more open migration law it'll put the german economy its workforce needs and immigrants qualifications at the center of immigration policy the plan will continue to treat asylum seekers and economic migrants differently but could allow greater flexibility for refugees who successfully interbreed ensure. well for more on this story i'm joined by our political correspondent hans but on top hans germany wants to recruit skilled workers from other countries what kind of workers are we talking about. well first of all we have to say this is a ruling that does not come soon direct the academic qualification of qualified people with people who have a university qualification it's aimed at people who have a skills qualifications such as mechanics all or people who cooks for instance
11:06 am
another way it's not an academic qualification and they have two ways of getting into germany in future if they are not living in the european union that is of course two ways of getting into germany one way is if they are. resent a qualification i recognised qualification and that can prove that they can speak sufficient german then they could enter germany folks six months to look for a job. during those six months however they would have to have enough money to get to iraq took to get across the six months without taking any money from the state the other possibility is that they get a contract with a german company that recruits them in a foreign country and then they would be allowed into germany what about asylum seekers hans who are already in germany but have been denied residence permits can they also benefit from the new proposals yes there can this is being politically a particularly sensitive area because especially the conservative parties in
11:07 am
germany have been saying that migration should not be a way of getting into the german labor market but in fact there are a number of asylum seekers who are in germany already who have made major progress in learning the language and to have jobs or getting qualifications and they will be treated in a similar way they will be able to basically get a proper raise of his promise and have the sort of security that they can stay in germany as security it's also important obviously for their employers for german companies now the parties in germany's governing coalition as we all know have been feuding for months now they're agreeing on difficult issues like migration does that mean that there's a new harmony in the government. that's what they're trying to present at the moment still the three minutes was called with this deal on migration talking to the press close to where i'm speaking and they i was making a big point of how well these discussions went how. hall how many of us in fact the
11:08 am
discussions were the german government has been as you said characterized by infighting for months and both the coalition partners the conservatives and the social democrats want to demonstrate their ability actually to govern actually to push through new laws to reform german society to deliver on their promises and they are saying that what they have now decided is one indication of that for them it's important to show that also because two regional elections are about to take place in germany this month in bavaria and the state of has a and in both regions the governing parties are not showing very well in the polls trying to demonstrate their effectiveness through these deals w. political correspondent hans blunt thank you. now to the greek island of les pauls work conditions at the moria refugee camp have been described as appalling more than eight thousand people are crammed into a facility built to hold just three thousand violence and prostitution are
