an issue many end up empty handed. like noureddine he takes me home to meet his family they've all been living under a tarp since the earthquake especially the children are traumatized. but when they don't come back the people that even when there's no earthquake off to shock i always feel like the ground is moving in that i'm really afraid sad and then i realize there's no earthquake but because i'm so afraid i'm imagining it didn't always feel like it's moving i'm scared to go inside a house by myself at only go with my parents if they're not with me i won't go in it's them last week. they're telling me they're running low on food and drinking water it's the smallest who suffer the most. many of the children are sick and hungry the youngest is only one month old. my

baby isn't in very good health at the moment she has a rash because of the heat we need milk diapers medicine and other things for her. new orleans family are not alone in their fear and despair all over paul and thousands are camping out and supplies are scarce at every turn. nowhere is this more obvious than at the city's gas stations. the distribution of the valuable commodity is heavily guarded. prices at this regulated pump are as always but on the black market gas sells for up to five times as much fuel is a lifeline some people here have been waiting for seven hours just to get five liters of gas they needed not only to power their motor bikes and cars but also generators that create electricity so they can charge for example their mobile phones to stay in touch and receive updates on the situation from the authorities

the lines here are endless at the moment we're at number seven hundred eighty nine and there are many more canisters and serry fears the one writing the numbers on them but at the moment he can't because his pen has run out. yet another hick up ever so slight and their attempt to organize the chaos. but with more help promised the people here hope they can soon start to rebuild their ravaged lives. journalist max walsh is in jakarta asked him whether essential supplies are getting to the people in the region around pollo certainly there have been significant difficulties however this morning the president flew in. to fly to die for his second visit to the affected area there was reports of at least seven cargoes fine flying into possible which is of course the epicenter.

with supplies from the central government but again as we've heard. in times of ongoing shortages of food water fuel and medical supplies. we've heard in the last couple of days that indonesia has made itself available for foreign aid which is significant development and certainly a bunch of governments including the european union have dedicated significant i now of the international farty to decide how the funding and support will be used. and that was journalist max walton there talking to us a little while ago from jakarta let's take a look now at some of the other stories making headlines around the world today u.s. tax authorities say they are investigating allegations that donald trump helped his family dog millions of dollars in taxes this after a report in the new york times citing what it says is a huge trove of tax records largely from the u.s.

president's paul there fred the white house has slammed the report as misleading. and u.s. authorities are investigating a suspicious envelope addressed to president trump at the white house it's believed to contain the deadly poison rice in this after defense secretary jim mattis received a similar letter the pentagon said it has put his mail facility under quarantine and that the f.b.i. was analyzing the envelope as. french interior minister called home has announced he is resigning he is the latest senior official to leave the administration of president amount to well not calling the popular call loam said he intends to run for mayor of leone in twenty twenty. celebrations at japan's space agency after a german french lender touched down on an asteroid the mascot probe was launched aboard a japanese rocket nearly four years ago as part of an effort to find clues about

the origin of the solar system. most people here in germany have a day off work today as the country marks the anniversary of the nation's reunification in one nine hundred ninety here in the capital the occasion is being celebrated with a festival of culture and history in a moment we'll talk to our correspondent about what we can expect but first good night cathodes talks to some germans about their experience of reunification and division. when the war came down aquash of all germans were not yet born or like me they were too young to feel any connection to this important event anyone who wasn't there back then can now relive history here in berlin at the origin of the locations along this two point five kilometer stretch the wire ran right in front of the right stock visitors can learn more about the fall of the berlin wall and the time after that on
10:09 am
a tour through their government district and some can cost them minds back. well that was very emotional. yes we all cried. starting to do so now for three months artist new figures that should never be forgotten many families were torn apart and many were reunited with german reunification it was a great party first violin and same piece of history here you're right in middle of it just an indescribable feeling even with all these choppy seas here and bits of the wall you still can't imagine it's. david hasselhoff song looking for freedom to him for union it's the only thing i remember. the fact that i and others who were children in the west at least can recall much goes to show how incredible those events were it was a peaceful revolution on the ninth of november east germany east its travel
10:10 am
restrictions to the west faced with mass demonstrations east german gotz open the border. what followed was a unique period in history the eleven months between the fall of the wall and the form of the reunification of east and west germany shown in this exhibition called half time it was a time in between two political systems and two societies both what's meant here in berlin a city that was no longer divided but also not yet fully reunited. finally on the third of october one thousand nine hundred ninety german us formally read unified the brandenburg gate as the iconic symbol of that moment for three days this installation by street artist j. r. is a reminder of when the war came down this year's party is less about celebrating and more about remembering this is it's good that we think of it today or on that
10:11 am
because we have a democracy that we have to defend it which is in danger right now. if you have the awareness that what we have is not a given that we have a united country you can't take freedom for granted and you have to keep that in mind this false nation is today. well it's all history and all history is part of our identity and we should always be aware of that. i think there are still differences be only find out about them when you start talking to people. today of the third or fourth told us our national holiday for many it's just a day off for no special reason to celebrate perhaps that's because reunification isn't simply a beauty for story that's a feeling of freedom yes but also the aftereffects of division which you can feel like no way is our correspondent hans bonte is covering the story for us to his next to the berlin wall where the fischel celebrations are getting underway with
10:12 am
a church service. so tell us how is reunified germany marking its national holiday. well as you said the official church service the religious ceremony has just started in the cathedral behind me here after that the heads of state and government and the berlin government will be meeting the people in front of the church there will be people allowed in as it were some kind of discussion going on later there will be an official state ceremony and the state opera house which is just on the road from here and then things will move on to the brandenburg gate where it will become a public festival where probably somewhere on the million people are expected. twenty eight years after political reification are there still differences that divide people in what used to be east and west germany hans. there's a lot of dispute about that and the opinions are not divided still some people say
10:13 am
that there is still quite a big difference other people say the difference is being emphasized too strongly by certain groupings by certain people i think you have to say that there is still a big difference between the east of the former east and the former west germany one of the features of that is that you can see that the political landscape in the former east german areas is very different to the political landscape in west germany and that has specially demonstrated by the fact that right wing political parties gain much stronger support in the east of germany than they gain in the west of germany so there does still seem to be a significant difference in the mentality of people on both sides of germany so there is a difference in mentality and ambivalence too perhaps you say there's a big celebration going on but what's the real mood in the country on this occasion is it really celebrate tory or somber or more one of resignation on the whole.
10:14 am
well i think you have to say that at the moment the political situation is such that germany is. the mood is rather somber mood with the mood is rather. doubtful about the german the current german situation that has to do with the fact of the rise of right wing politics in germany of the fact that the major political parties especially those parties that are in government are the chancellors conservatives and the social democrats that they are losing significant support of the population has been losing that support for the last couple of years and there's a great uncertainty about what's going to come as a result of the german political situation how the german society will look when this political system some hall changes and that seems to be something that everybody is expecting is likely to happen in the near a coming in the in the near future. thank you so much correspondent hans blunt.

now in a few hours time british prime minister theresa may will address her conservative party's conference speech is being seen as may's last chance to rally her party behind her brags that strategy with less than six months to go before the u.k. leaves the e.u. conservatives are still divided over the issue. looks back at how the u.k. came to be in this position. we got our country back. for exit tears like nigel for us and boris johnson one of the referendum and the new prime minister promised. being correct as we make. it about that. look to see just recently e.u. commission president juncker sounded a little less optimistic how much money we get the impression that the britons think we are leaving great britain it's exactly the opposite. but why are you so
10:16 am
negative. because the e.u. is chief negotiator and the u.k. gregg's it minister have been negotiating. and negotiating. then the u.k. changed its brags it minister and they negotiated some more. with this result we must finalize the reason the rug removed and we are not yet there this document. we must or so prepare a party because the conversation on our future russian ship. you can see all of this is borderline literally we mean the border between northern ireland which is part of the u.k. and the republic of ireland that belongs to the e.u. this remains the main sticking point in the negotiations everybody wants to avoid
10:17 am
the border the e.u. has suggested pushing it into the irish sea but to reset may rejects an external border separating two parts of the u.k. it could be avoided if the u.k. as a whole but part of the european single market and customs union. tourism a says the only workable solution is or so-called checkers plan where she calls for the frictionless movement of goods between the e.u. and the u.k. that of course is one of the principal freedoms of the e.u. single market the problem is she rejects all the other freedoms and that's what the u. commission your calls cherry picking and that's won't fly e.u. council president even made fun of me on instagram to drive that point home no cherries with no solution for ireland and future trade ties so recent may is in a very difficult situation if she gives in to the e.u. the breaks the tears will eat her alive if she doesn't there's no deal.

bret's it still means breakfast but not even teresa mayes seems to know whether it will be soft or hard. to the champions league now in munich had to settle for a one one draw at home last night i i guess. it was a dream start for by and with defender heading them in front of just four minutes it was his first goal for the club in almost a year but after twenty two minutes the dutch side tied the score through a new save rally the game ended one one leaving without a win in their last three matches including their bonus league game it's. now if you've ever attended or paid in durance race like marathon you know what a mess they are to clean up especially at the water stops where hundreds maybe thousands of plastic cups and bottles clogged the road the solution
10:19 am
a company in london might be on to something. this little bowl could save the streets and the seas from the sky of plastic cups and bottles so-called. made from plant and seaweed extracts making them entirely edible and if they're not actually consumed the producers say they are degraded in four to six weeks at the richmond marathon in london the jelly like globe ules went down a treat. brilliant idea. back. runners and event organizers have long known what a pain plastic can be for them in particular these biodegradable drinking vessels are an important innovation. really like removing the bottles from the right because in just a couple seconds and then you throw it away over and this is what somebody said. these weird little water bubbles are due to be trialled running events in the near

future if they continue to receive a positive reaction they could be a permanent replacement for plastic. oh to hell and now as the italian debt crisis remains in the spotlight very much so in fact terry last week the italian government was in the hot seat after it announced plans to increase its public deficit sparking concern in brussels and now claudio bought it gave the. mike head of the ruling league party said the country would be better off leaving the euro zone altogether and i tell you prime minister edges epic on day was quick to counter that taking to facebook to state that those comments were not the position of the government as a whole all the same the prospect of basically having its own currency once again was enough to see the euro slide to a six week alone on tuesday for a return to the lira no one is taking italy's thought experiment of ditching the euro and reintroducing the leader a seriously in this commission the northern league's economic spokesman claudio
10:21 am
borg he claimed on monday that italy could solve most of its own problems with its own currency the euro has since come under pressure a rise in the interest in government bonds saw them come close to reaching a four year high on tuesday prime minister just happy conte has no affirmed his country's commitment to the euro but his government has also made expensive promises to voters including tax cuts to raise welfare spending and rollback unpopular pension reforms. moves that are likely to cause italy's public deficit the second highest in the eurozone to jump to two point four percent in the coming years. not even to a treat from two point four percent would mean saying to a tolerance you will not retire we won't raise your pension we won't compensate those who were cheated by the banks and were not establishing a basic income but we won't go back an inch and if necessary we'll explain this economic budget in public squares but that defiant tone may soon ring hollow
10:22 am
italian media is reporting that rome will likely trim some of the fat from its budget for more on this we can bring in a guy miller he's the chief economist at zurich insurance mr miller now the award is set if he will be better off leaving the euro zone prompting the euro to fall to a six week low a serious consequence there but how seriously should we take his comments. well that makes good headlines but i think the reality is highly unlikely clearly where it lead to try and leave the euro and it would be prohibitively expensive they would result in italian selling off dramatically and unfortunately would put italy into a tailspin leading to a severe recession and what happens to italy what is bad for italy frankly is also bad for the euro zone so it would have grave consequences in the eurozone and globally i mean you say that it's highly unlikely but we do have to recognize the fact that it's only has a rebellious and euro skeptic government so surely you must be treating the
10:23 am
prospect of the needing the eurozone as a risk and wouldn't the consequences be catastrophic. absolutely the consequences would be catastrophic i think you're also right in terms of saying this new government is much less predictable but i think there's a difference between rhetoric and reality i think what we've seen really in the last week since the latest budget deficit was announced we've seen spreads versus. versus government bonds really believed to more than three hundred basis points and that's an issue for the cost of carrying that huge amount of debt at least double has and is a big issue for the italian banks which are still very vulnerable talking about the issue of public. public deficit and that criticism from you was young wrong to criticize that because it is within the current limits that increase in the italian deputy prime minister. accuses you of pushing out rooms cost of borrowing by likening italy to greece that he's right in this particular spot. well i think
10:24 am
there's no doubt that the deficit surprised the markets and it surprised investors generally given what the finance minister have been speaking about in the weeks before when you have been speaking about potentially a one point six percent deficit you saw spreads come in the financial markets were rewarding what was deemed to be a conservative and reasonable budget deficit target the trouble is that the budget deficit is two point four percent each of the next three years that is likely to actually push up debt to g.d.p. the reason that the finance minister and others are saying it's ok because there are groups assumptions italy is much higher than i think reality will be it all depends on how well it's lee does briefly it's really is the second most indebted nation in the euro zone how much of a risk does it pose to the overall health of the current countries like germany for example. i think is a huge risk because the financial into linkage are incredible are vast there are
10:25 am
bigger than they were the financial crisis and eurozone crisis the target to mechanism means that all your own countries are intertwined and therefore what matters to italy doesn't matter for germany it doesn't matter for the rest of the euro zone and i think any move any further talk about leaving the euro zone i think would lead to financial disruption and potentially risk the viewers which is still pretty good so important to watch what is said as much as what it is down when it comes to the health of the year is that going on chief economist at zurich insurance good to have your perspective. well the chinese government has found one way to bring in some extra cash is just auctioned off its ultra fast five g. frequencies raking in an unexpected six and a half billion euros that's well over two and a half times more than it had hoped for vodafone italy and telecom italia say they have committed around two point four billion euros between them the surprising

company is a boon for rome meanwhile other countries are planning similar with germany set to sell off its fifth generation frequencies next spring. inflation in turkey has hit another high according to government figures it surged by almost twenty five percent on a yearly basis that's the highest point in a decade and a haul month by month in september it rose six point three percent far exceeding forecasts behind the inflation is a deepening currency crisis dogging the country the turkish lira as last forty percent of it's funny this year alone. i'm reminded of the top story we are following for you so my visit last week's earthquake and tsunami in indonesia are facing their fifth day with a little food or water some aid is trickling into the region but the government admits the relief effort is slow and claims of widespread damage to infrastructure and a lack of fuel. and british prime minister teresa mayes expected to take
