kind of. bangladesh the dawn of islamism and exclusive d.w. report starts october eighteenth. this is d w news live from berlin voters in revolt germany's governed governing party's fear for their hold on power and we are in the german state of bavaria ahead of elections on sunday that look likely to up and the political status quo there could be in britain questions for chancellor angela merkel in berlin. also

coming up free at last the pastor and her bronson's house arrest is lifted by a turkish court it's likely to removing major cause of tension between the u.s. and turkey and what happens to dissidents saudi journalist john lalo shogi the washington post launches a major campaign claiming that the turkish government has video and audio proof that he was murdered inside the saudi consulate in istanbul. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program a political shakeup is in the works in germany ahead of state elections in bavaria the conservative c.s.u. has been the dominant party there for much of the post-war period but recent polls show the c.s.u. might be headed for disaster with voters turning instead to smaller parties such.
9:02 pm
the brains of the far right alternative for germany sunday's election in bavaria could also have implications for chancellor angela merkel because the c.s.u. is part of her coalition government our reporter is mikhail of course her and max. went to the southern state to find out why voters appear to be shuttling the party that has worked there for so long. once a year the top figures in bavaria and politics gather to commemorate fancy words of stylists the man celebrated as something between the patron saint and godfather of modern birth area. germany's interior minister hosty who is here to infamous in berlin as the troublemaker and i'm going to american government here to calls for him to go are getting louder. stage premiere marco pseudo wants to succeed both. and his big. should be no space for democratic parties further
9:03 pm
right than the far right of the campaign that strauss would have voted for them so what he did for them came here and low of the very many voters have fled from the c.s.u. to the far right but very in support for the far right if he is patsy making this a prime political battleground the room is. a parliamentary group you don't have a voice. here they can do it thank you thank you very much. he's come all the way from both here because he knows that these reactions or elections are about much more than the back. and in a phobia is a driving force for many here tonight. we. are no longer let my kids out on the street on their own what i see on t.v. or hear on the radio. just can't do it anymore. response and it may help.
9:04 pm
us in the main issue is security here i have children and we're really afraid for our children. to figure out of bavaria looms large over the ecto professed generally of politics free zone but the state election is mostly being fought in the name of defending what it celebrates best and variance hold most dear. thailand parties good quality of life. time out. and paying happy i took the fast. at the abbey of the two boys and visitors from around the world have been welcome for more than a thousand years machall is here today it's the only appearance with a mark or pseudo she calls for confidence in being german as antidote to fear of others. because there are those and those who are no longer aware of their own foundations of course don't know how to integrate others and in this debate about

islam i sometimes get the sense that some may have become jealous that others are living their religion while we forget ours. despite a strong economy the public are unhappy and turning away from the c.s.u. in both directions the green party candidates see themselves as living proof of a left wing alternative and i believe the citizens of the very up down the politicians another spreading hate and fear. one has on hits of the polls predict the greens could become the various second strongest political force and could join government for the first time in german post-war history this very an election campaign smacks of pro change said to me at the very least that's expected to blow away anglo-american as interior minister. but it could also deal another blow to zero grip on power. play. cross over now to de chief political

editor michelle across nerve who is at the c.s. hughes final campaign rally in munich this evening welcome see you we know this is a regional election why is it so important for the country as a whole. it's i'm standing here to be a war and this is kind of the variance down on any election event and it's so relevant because german chancellor angela merkel is already facing criticism in berlin from her own political calm she now faces here varia this conservative stronghold being under pressure the sea is you the sister party of her conservative c.d.u. party is expected to lose its absolute majority now that doesn't really sound like such a big deal but forming coalitions here but very very unusual something that is not unusual in berlin is almost unheard of here for various only happened twice before
9:07 pm
since world war two and if the rock solid support varia for the conservatives starts to crumble that of course has ripple effects let's talk a little bit more about those ripple effects mckayla because what we heard you say in your piece was basically what's expected there over the weekend as the bavarians go to the polls is this sort of bleeding of support for the c.s.u. to both the sides on the left and on the right so what do you think that the current polling says about this shift in dynamics and in german politics. well first of all it marks a departure from those major parties the c.d.u. this centrist party the city you and bit further to the left the social democrats something we see all across europe where democrats movements parties like in france have been all but wiped out now so the democrats are also of course under severe pressure there's a fragmentation of the political landscape but that's something the sea is to the
9:08 pm
conservatives here in bavaria have tried to frame as something that's a source of instability and that is something german voters certainly don't like but quite clearly the c.s.u. is had a hard time particularly over that hot button issue of migration initially. particularly foreseeable for the see if you don't now interior minister he distanced of the self from day one pretty much from angela merkel's what then became known as the open arms migration policy at one point threatening to take up before germany's constitutional court well that didn't happen he stuck with her so the see this you really has a credibility here issue that explains why many fled to the far right party which is getting pretty strong here in the states but same time the centrists like you to the left but still kind of centrist greens are benefiting from that just briefly mahela before we let you go it's the final hours before sunday's vote what mood have you been encountering there i mean is there a sense from the c.s.u.
9:09 pm
politicians that their party is in trouble. absolutely we've seen the interior minister of australia and the top candidate say crimea marco sudar you know pretty much already blaming each other for what ever they may face on sunday it's quite clear it will be an election setback it could cost interior ministers zero for his role in this use you and that would mean potentially the first member of the mackerels. government cabinet having to leave so that's a risk but it could also be seen as a blessing almost for the german chancellor has been fighting with morsi over the past six months so it could be the first indication of more instability in merkel's government. there with the very latest from bavaria joining us from munich there thank you so much. he's. now a turkish court has lifted the house arrest of u.s. pastor andrew bronson the ruling allows him to leave turkey immediately brunson was
9:10 pm
arrested two years ago on suspicion of having links to fit to the girl and the cleric that uncle of blames for the failed coup attempt in two thousand and sixteen his detention has caused ties to fall apart between washington and ankara with both sides imposing tit for tat penalties. and it is a mr rader has the latest from washington julie i'll begin with you because the pastor has been sentenced but then he has also been free so what can you tell us. well earlier today a court's near the coastal town of is mia has lifted andrew bronson's house arrest and his travel ban and this essentially means he's now free to leave turkey and according to his lawyer this is exactly what he is going to do know now he is on his way to the u.s. basically according to reports he will be taken by a u.s.
9:11 pm
military plane first to germany to the u.s. air base over there and ramstein for a medical check up and later will continue his way to the u.s. pastor bronson himself must be must have been incredibly relieved today he was quoted saying this is the day our family has been praying for witnesses the court said he wept as the decision was announced but as you rightly mentioned he was also found guilty today and sentenced to a little more than three years of jail time on terrorism related charges he does not need to serve this time due to the time he already spent behind bars but this is what turkish officials are highlighting today pastor andrew bronson is leaving turkey as a man convicted of helping terror groups and we know he is heading now toward the united states ultimately that is where maya is standing by. my we know that u.s. trained turkish relations they really enter dangerous territory over pastor
9:12 pm
bronson's detention with the issue seemingly results now where things stand i mean is washington going to lift the economic sanctions on turkey. and this seemed to be a key part of the negotiations to let the pastor go and it looks like now the u.s. will in fact lift these sanctions in exchange for his release and we've seen reports today saying that everyone and trump started discussing this process way back in june at this nato meeting because we have to remember that the u.s. and turkey are still nato allies despite relations right now being at very much a low point and this is definitely a big win for trump but as usually a mention air do want had to somehow put a good face on this so that he looks like he wasn't just caving to u.s. pressure even though he was under intense amounts of pressure from washington and that could be the reason for this guilty verdict that we saw despite brunson being
9:13 pm
let go the turkish authorities still had to find him guilty so that it didn't look like everyone was simply caving yulia tell us a little bit more then about how turkey has been framing it because i'm i mean we know that everyone was really in trouble here right i mean the was plunging. how are they framing it is it is it part of a broader deal to somehow smooth over u.s. turkey relations. well yes as we already heard there is a lot of speculation now has there been a deal about pastor bronson between the two governments the turkish side is strongly denying that there is such a deal in fact a communications officer in the turkish presidency said that this was a decision made by independent courts but this is of course what we always hear in such cases i remember the case of the german journalist in his you jill who was released earlier this year we were reporting on this as well but deal or no deal
9:14 pm
all observers and all people familiar with turkish u.s. relations now say this is at least paving the way for the two nato allies to mend their ties even though of course such a verdict and today's developments will not be able to ease old the tensions and to solve all the differences. when the pastor finally lands on american soil what you think the reaction is going to be. as i said before this is definitely a win for the trump administration he is an evangelical preacher and the evangelicals in the us are make up a huge part of the trump supporter base this is going to really rally them up in a good way we have to mention i feel like i'm just bringing this up all the time but the u.s. midterm elections are coming up in less than a month so the timing of this could not be better for trump because you can point to the release of this pastor and he can say to his base look at what i did for you
9:15 pm
