there are reports hotline five does have yet to staunch but drawing. i'm christine one welcome to the program german voters have santals a call for change from the southern state of bavaria off to elections today now projected results show the c.s.u. party has lost its absolute majority ending the political dominance of i'm going to mak wholes conservative allies the c.s.u. is showing less than forty percent of the vote that's a drop of more than ten percent the greens made major gains now becoming the second strongest party in bavaria and taking about eighteen percent of the votes the free vote is that's a coalition of independent candidates trailed him with just over eleven percent and the far right safety is set to into various. and for the first time after taking

nearly eleven percent of the vote the social democrats suffered bitter losses and lose their former spot as the second strongest posse if b.p. is wavering around the five percent mark and the left policy is up slightly. now here are some of the reactions coming in from the winners and the liz's off the bavarian state elections. dismay at a watershed moment the c.s.u. loses absolute majority of various unswerving oil tea to the party is over their opposition to uncle america's migration policy didn't pay off in the vote sometimes for months after we've had a bit of a painful result even if we still have to wait for the election night to end we accept the result with humility and we need to learn from the result we'll analyze everything closely one thing is certain despite some predictions despite some discussions despite some comments the c.s.u.

hasn't just become the strongest party that also has the clear mandate to govern. for the greens there was jubilation. but there you are again needs a political party that solves people's problems rather than constantly causing new problems and that dear friends is why this result has already changed the very many many thanks for that. doom and gloom meanwhile for the s.p.d. they lost over half their voter share and the leadership seemed in shock. it's a video defeat. it means we couldn't convince the voters we weren't able to win the competition between the parties. that has to be analyzed at all levels but there certainly wasn't support from the federal level on the contrary we weren't able to benefit from the policy dispute between the c.d.u. in the c.s.u. switch and c.d.o. . for months the c.s.u.
10:04 pm
had questioned federal migration policy to the cost of coalition partners the c.d.u. and the s.p.d. the f.t. will most sit in fifteen of the sixteen regional parliament. they are what. anyone who voted f.t. today in bavaria is saying that america all must go ladies and gentlemen i. the regional elections in hessen are in two weeks merkel's creaking coalition will remain for that long but the softening of support for germany's formerly strong conservatives is likely to feed the growth of other political forces. for more now let's bring in our political chief correspondent michelle it is reporting for us in munich michelle and this has been an earthquake in bavarian politics why how are people reacting to this where you are. i'm actually here at the election party of this is too conservative part of the

system party of anger marco c.d.u. and here there was a sense of there was a political earthquake it was predicted but it didn't get as bad as they had feared and that really is the key issue for the sea is you hear that they have been holding down the rounds thirty three percent and upwards of thirty five percent it's a long way down from so forty seven point seven last time there's a recognition that they were able to reach voters but also there's a sense that it's can't be their responsibility alone that lynn is partly to blame for this and when they say berlin they of course also mean german chancellor angela merkel the big question now is how much that shake up will translate straight into berlin the sort of question is it will definitely have an effect but there's no drastic decision to come out of here it's in a line of mine a shake ups that keep eating away at the power base of the german chancellor here in germany michalis talk about
10:06 pm
a party that didn't do as well as was predicted and that would be the far right a fifty and we heard the c.s.u. leader mark is there to essentially say that the party had been successful in keeping the far at a fifty at bay is that the sentiment is that we're all is that sentiment being widely shared the. most that you see as you has been losing voters to the far right to the a.f.p. and that's an interesting point here when you look at the polling that was done and what was really important to people is a whole host of issues but one of them is identity is home and at the same time you have almost ninety percent of voters saying they're actually happy. with how the economy is run usually it's the economy and the election so clearly they were unable to reach voters when you talk to people in the streets. together with my colleagues i've been traveling into they're quite a bit ahead of these polls and you talk about the bread and butter issues but it always in the end also comes down to that key issue of migration of that sense that
10:07 pm
many people. appear to have that they want stronger border protection but they simply don't want that much migration into germany and that is the bottom line and also the breeding ground for the fall right here in particular in bavaria which yes it came in strong at upwards of ten percent bots it's a far cry not as strong as in some other states was upward of twenty particularly. alright that was. chief political correspondent. in munich for us now i want to bring in constantine ferguson he's a political scientist at hume university here in berlin kasi thanks for joining us so we've talked about the fact that you know the far right if he was one of the winners to today but the greens they are really the biggest winners today told me about what. success means why such a big strong showing from this party. now that you mention that i'm reminded of

what you know the green party leadership said after the election some of the greens have the answers to to you know to the pressing issues and then the other party stoned it's interesting to think of the green as a solution party they've always been perceived as sort of the party that just the criticises stuff you know they're just negative and obviously that was an exaggeration but the other thing is an exaggeration to i think the greens are just benefiting tremendously from the fact that this election has been about a set of a clear cut issues on which the greens just happen to have clear cut positions such as migration. you know the idea of sort of cosmopolitanism cosmopolitan policy is the the green stand very clear on the left side of those on the progressive side of those issues. and the other parties are divided on these issues with the exception of the f.t. which stands on the right side of those issues so in a sense the greens and the f.t.
10:09 pm
of the only two parties that really really have clear cut positions on these issues of the day but those times can change and next election come the greens might be a party that is internally divided over other issues so i think it will depend very much on the other parties to you know to put other issues on the agenda so how do you think this result is going to affect politics in billion now why i think there's a sort of a long term and a short term implication the short and implication is that everyone thought that you know ok so we have to power through the next couple of month the this is use going to pull all these political stunts but when these elections in bavaria all over they're going to keep quiet and everything is going to be fine and we can talk about policies and you know go about our you know government business however that might not happen because the result ended up being so disastrous that this is you will be internally divided over you know who to blame for these results and you know how to sort of position the party in the future this not everyone has been of

a calm of a temper tempered about sort of this is the sort of in turn discussion but that might change within the next couple of weeks and long term obviously there is a change in the german party system the fragmentation of parties a different style of politics that is taking place that's a momentous change but always keep in mind that those changes are taking place within a context of tremendous stability if you look at the left and the right of the political spectrum as two blocks not much has changed in terms of the vote between those blogs the changes that have taken place have taken place within those blocks very interesting thank you for your insights constantine facing his. tical scientist at home university. now to some of the stories making news around the world staying here in germany in fact police say three people including a child are dead after a small plane crashed through a barrier and into a crowd non-local media say the pilot lost control of the aircraft when trying to
