this is deja vu news live from berlin a political earthquake in bavaria voters in the wealthy conservative german state have turned away from the p.s.u. and given their votes to parties and both ends of the political spectrum. you're already. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program german voters have sent out a call for change from the southern state of bavaria after elections on sunday
11:01 pm
projected results show the c.s.u. party has lost its absolute majority and the political dominance of angle america's conservative allies projections show that they gained less than forty percent of the vote that's a drop of more than ten percent the greens made major games now becoming the second strongest party in bavaria taking nearly eighteen percent of support the free voters a coalition of independent candidates trailed them with eleven point five percent the far right a.f.d. is that to enter but the area's parliament for the first time with more than ten percent of voter support meanwhile the social democrats suffered better losses dropping below the ten percent mark votes for the f.d.p. and the left party are up only slightly. and here are some of the reactions coming in from the waiters and the losers of the bavarian state elections for. dismay at
11:02 pm
a watershed moment the c.s.u. loses absolute majority. of various unswerving oil to the party is over their opposition to underlie america's migration policy didn't pay off in the vault . sometimes for months after we've had a bit of a painful result even if we still have to wait for the election night to end we accept the result with humility and we need to learn from the result we'll analyze everything closely one thing is certain despite some predictions despite some discussions despite some comments the c.s.u. hasn't just become the strongest party it also has the clear mandate to govern. for the greens there was jubilation. but there you are again needs a political party that solves people's problems rather than constantly causing new problems and that dear friends is why this result has already changed many many
11:03 pm
thanks for that. doom and gloom meanwhile for the s.p.d. they lost over half their voter share and the leadership seemed in shock this is moving to need it's a bigger defeat it means we couldn't convince the voters we weren't able to win the competition between the parties that has to be analyzed at all levels but there certainly wasn't support from the federal level on the contrary we weren't able to benefit from the policy dispute between the c.d.u. and the c.s.u. so. for months the c.s.u. had questioned federal migration policy to the cost of coalition partners the c.d.u. and the s.p.d. the f.d.a. will no sit in fifteen of the sixteen regional parliament. there what i have anyone who voted f.t. today in bavaria is saying that merkel must go ladies and gentlemen.
11:04 pm
the regional elections in hessen are in two weeks merkel's creaking coalition will remain for that long but the softening of support for germany's formerly strong conservatives is likely to feed the growth of other political forces and for more let's bring in dave used chief political editor mckayla kapoor who is standing by in the very in parliament so what are the reactions on the ground there. well the reactions of the conservatives see if you are of course this is not a very good result for them but it's not as bad as many had feared because the polls had predicted that they might get us the thirty three percent which would have already raised a lot more questions about who should be leading this party in the future is that they feel they got away with a block i've read here at the same time there's a recognition that there is a very different political landscape here and i just get the chance to talk so much
11:05 pm
they'd be bad news the central c.s.u. figure him very but also the leader of the european people's party about what the impact in berlin will be. how much this damage german chancellor angela merkel and her political pound of stability well i don't see it for a seat first of all a result for the bavarian elections and and you have to assess some among us among the conservatives in the people's party in germany what does this mean compare this other year of being. people's bodies ours ultimately is not the most fun i have to say but on the other hand is not the want to achieve so that's why we need an assessment we need an internal discussion about this so today it's important to bring two things together stability for the country and a true and honest discussion among ourselves about the reasons well you mentioned the europe wide trend that we saw marco's sort of very early on go into a kind of damage control mode where try to put this into a european perspective of loss of support for the big posses here do you see is it
11:06 pm
as simple as that is this just a trend continuing in germany a european trend or is this something really special here we have european wide the prague mentation we have european wide from left and right rising up listen and even extremists in the national listen on the floor that's why germany is not an island in such a political frame and that's why we have to give an answer but my computer answer must be to show people a vision to show people a future intonation for what they want will. they have his challenges and that they life on the table and if he can give positive ions as if he can convince with good visions then i think we can be still a successful was a sees you too late to change it to rhetoric which at times was suspicious least similar to the far right a f.t. . the migration thing is all over a year old one of the dominating issues nobody can can award a debate about migration but what we have to do from now on is to talk about the results what he achieved what we did but we managed in the last three years of the design and fifteen as achievements on the turkish border on the military and border
11:07 pm
that we really reduce the numbers of illegal migrants to the european union dramatically so let's talk about success story said disobeys. trust. so it seems as if there is some soul searching at this hour going on in the c.s.u. party you mentioned some of what see as you party leader marcus souter said earlier he added that the c.s.u. party had kept the far right a day and i'm wondering if that's a sentiment that's widely shared there. well that's a positive way of looking at it the if he didn't get upwards of twenty percent which he did get in some eastern states here in germany certainly but at the same time it's came from absolutely nowhere to be a political force to be reckoned with and this is something that d.c. is he recognizes he also when he talks in leading figures but it was the one who turned around the whole campaign just a couple weeks ago when the c.d.c.
11:08 pm
realized that starting to sound like the f.t. simply didn't go down well with the traditional conservative support base who shy away in the end and i think that's also what we've seen here with the relatively strong showing of the c.s. you compared to some polls in the end they saw away from a die hard fall right if d. and to some i spoke to in the background told me that chemists those attacks on the streets where the if he closed ranks with the far right quite openly was a turning point for them also in the campaign and perhaps that's what we saw some people who abandoned the c.s.u. actually turning left to talk with us about the biggest winners today how are we to read the huge gains of the green party. here you can have a big debate on how far left the green party really is it's come from the left it became. a party really for affluence kind of center left voters and
11:09 pm
it's seems to taken in those voices who saw it away from the sea issue because it started to sound so tough and potentially tough on my great. but at the same time it's a lead to the decline of the social democrats here who are no serious political force anymore of course reaffirming those fears that already exist that the social democrats jimmie's only oldest party could simply disappear into the school in significance. mahela what are the implications on the national level i mean as merkel's government standing on shaky ground because for example we saw some questioning from the s.p.d. which was one of the big losers tonight of the grand coalition. yes and this is a direct result of course of this poor showing in bavaria the social democrats everyone here really has pointed to berlin trying to explain potentially bad is the
11:10 pm
bad results that came out of this so in a sense yes it weakens our going to support base and adds to the existential fear that the social democrats are feeling if they should go into yet another coalition and that might have an impact on how well the government sticks together so another potential turning point is the state elections in tests it in two weeks time we'll know a lot more after that but this certainly doesn't add disability in government and regional elections just becoming so important to gauge the state of politics in germany behala cooper joining us from the varian parliament thank you. and i would have a closer look at one of tonight's big winners we will catch up now with. the former co-leader of the greens at the national level and still a major figure in the party he was optimistic about what the result means for his
11:11 pm
party. misters the me air ed looks like the greens are going to go with a wreck it results in city variance they parliament's tonight how's the mood of the pot at the moment or as you can see here it is an incredible big three nobody expected over dad strong we more than doubled so our last election results were now in the second largest party in the state of play of area having minds in the last election we were under ten percent no recodes to twenty percent that's new story victory for us but it comes along with responsibility we were aware of that on one side we're happy about the election result on the other side we also see the election results of if the party of unfortunately populism is on the rice not only in other european countries in germany as well and unfortunately barrios another country where this populist party has and of parliaments so dismissed see this as an obligation to start today to do everything to get that part of the voters back for democracy that doesn't belong to the a fifty party or the greens him a very
11:12 pm
a kamal campaigned with the idea it's you and the absolute majority of the seas are the varying conservatives and to be part of the future government so how would that work with they go into coalition with the caesar the but then conservatives and what will be the points where they probably would have conflicts within the van conservatives you just mentioned itself there is a problem in there with populism in the season in their campaign have been part of the problem haven't they but we said we're ready to take over responsibility where we didn't we did not say that we want to govern under any conditions we said we want a pro european policy not a policy that says be very a first second we do want to want to divide to society we want to society but everybody is part of the society and a third part of the sleaze we believe in sustainability we do not believe in the policy that was made in the last five years or even longer year so the question goes to the other party has lost the election are to ready to make a change the way we describe it or not that's the simple question everybody the whole word seems to looking at the various annoyed especially bowls of. the berlin
11:13 pm
where we've seen in recent polls that there are similar trends regarding the greens as the various so what does the result in the very mean for bell in politics what does it mean for the federal green policy in germany first of all let me say that coming from the southwest of germany from the state of florida it's a big i'm very proud to know he's strong as well if you take the green election results because the south now in germany is very very green and of course study encourages the rest of germany have in mind in two weeks we have another a coming state election the state of here's where we are we've also lost to see strong greens again in the government's berlijn i'm sure the minister of interior happens to be the leader of the seas who party at the same time will ask himself what responsibility has for his election result let's not get so the question i have to answer i guess to see you soon has a lot of things to discuss thank you very much mr as the media. as domestic issues
11:14 pm
while ago with let's get more now on these election results which on my constantine bossing political scientists at humble university and political correspondent kate brady joining us here in the studio welcome to both of you kate what are we to make of the results tonight i think the biggest takeaway is as we heard from just shortly before is really this continuing trend of an erosion of germany's main stream parties and this in turn is affecting and creating a huge change in germany's political landscape so of course the two main parties that we're talking about here at least in the various cases the c.s.u. the conservative bavarian sister party to merkel's conservative c.d.u. and also the social democrats and of course the social democrats would never they never had the best results in bavaria anyway but of course on if you reflect that into the federal level this is something that we're seeing time and time again in germany right now but also beyond germany as well you're seeing the mainstream
11:15 pm
parties crumbling away and into. and as we've seen here in bavaria to the sea even in the greens and they a.f.d. further away from the center of germany's political spectrum they can the gains from the failings of the social democrats and the conservatives and this is going to be felt all the way back to it and let's talk a little bit more about the implications for berlin and constantine i'll turn to you how do you see the broader implications not only of the national level for the government but also for the chancellor. it seems to me that all parties of the two mainstream parties that have suffered these losses are really very temperate right now in their responses they're still trying to test the waters there hasn't been any any major you know backstabbing or any major sort of blame game there have been some little stabs but i think everyone is just trying to see you know what's going to happen in the next days and everyone's trying to position themselves so i think that's one thing that we can see in the next few weeks you know
11:16 pm
a lot of politicking a lot of you know playing politics a lot of trying to sort of to safeguard here your position i think what we're also going to see is a lot of talk and more talk about that fragmentation of the party system so i think german parties are keenly aware of sort of the historical precedent that we have in germany i mean we've talked about this fragmentation being a fact of politics all over the west and europe but i think nowhere. parties so so keenly aware of the sort of the dangers of fragmentation i mean other than other countries fragmentation is much more extreme look at the netherlands for example it's an extremely fragmented party system there but i think in germany the ideal fragmentation given the volume on history given the sort of the president is just much much much much more extreme than in other countries. sorry forgive me there for interrupting you but perhaps there's a lesson to be learned here for the c.s.u. because part of their way of dealing with this fragmentation especially to the
11:17 pm
right of their party which is where the a.f. . lies is that they really incorporated a lot of that party's rhetoric a lot of the issues and there was a poll that was taken actually from the voters which analyzed that strategy and it said that seventy three percent of former c.s.u. voters complained that their party focused too much on the topic of migration and neglected other issues kate could that be the c.s. used biggest problem. and what could be other parties like i think that certainly played a huge role in the loss of sand of course what i always found is really quite amazing down in bavaria when you take over the c.s.u. party leader who is also the interior minister on a federal level for germany when it came to bavaria and wholesale for dealing with the migration crisis which is what point out no longer exists in germany we're not having hundreds and thousands of migrants arriving every day to germany was that no longer exists and in real terms but varia hosts
11:18 pm
a whole actually dealt with the migration crisis down in bavaria of course many migrants refugees asylum seekers when they first arrived in germany came of this so the border first arrived in bavaria they actually dealt with it very well but politically it was a disaster because he say whole first specially built it up to be this huge issue and that largely then came off the back of the results that we saw in the federal elections in september last year when they lost votes to the far right instead then the c.s.u. started following behind the f.t. and started to mimic them if you will and said and they lost a lot of a lot of voices then to the left to the especially to the greens as we've seen in the polls tonight and when it comes back to this issue of migration the s.p.d. and the c.s.u. down in bavaria they had one similar point there in that they neither of those two parties really made clear where they stood at least if you voted for the a fifty
11:19 pm
you knew that they were empty migration whereas the greens on the other hand have a very pro migration policy and in the middle you had the s.p.d. and the c.s.u. and no one really knew what they stood for and as we heard just before for me as well the c.s.u. started back pedaling in recent weeks when they realised this isn't like isn't going to work by mimicking the f.t. there will be using far too many voters to the other side and you know it i mean this isn't. going out of nowhere but it seems as we see more and more of these regional elections that the status quo in german politics is no longer a reality that we're really poised for a shake up here not only on the regional levels but also nationally and therefore i like to ask you konstantin because you know this issue of fragmentation it's not only one that we're seeing in germany i mean we've seen it in the netherlands italy and sweden you know voters voting for smaller parties that tend to be more single issue a little bit more on the fringes is this
11:20 pm
a new political reality and how do you navigate bad if your angle americal or if you're somebody who wants to be agile americal successor for example i found it interesting that you know when confronted with that kind of question one could be able to see as you. said that while we need a new vision we need better solutions esp with their representatives when confronted with similar questions you know what are you going to do now they responded well we need better solutions we need better programs so they pretty much just saying the things that they used to say in the past and i think that's not going to work anymore i don't think that's going to fly i think there's two things that the mainstream parties need to do and one thing is you know what you just said is they need to focus on other issues they need to set the agenda in a different way they shouldn't just trail those parties in this case the sea is huge you know focusing on a migration of a symbolic kind of way addressing that issue even though they have actually solves a lot of the problems so i think that's a very very important point and i think secondly and this is going even deeper i
11:21 pm
think i think the need to convince people to some extent not only that they have better solutions and a better program that they have better managing things but that politics is not about recognition and identity politics doesn't have that kind of reach and politics shouldn't be expected to have that kind of reach and i think that that is a major problem for mainstream parties that to try. need to appeal to a very broad sort of basis to a huge eclectic base of voters. talking to those voters that kind of promise them that politics is giving them recognition of their lives politics is about solving problems in a very limited kind of fashion and i think that the mainstream parties in addition to having better solutions and that have that's always an important issue i think they need to convince voters that they shouldn't expect too much of politics so for the larger parties tonight a lot of soul searching here in germany thank you so much. kate brady here in the

islamist fighters. the islamists are supposed to withdraw by monday along with their heavy weapons at least that was part of turkey and russia's deal to created to militarized zone here but the christian militias leader says the islamists are actually reinforcing their defenses rather than withdrawing. you. holding the cease fire that was agreed to the islamist militants are digging trenches and building bunkers we wouldn't normally tolerate but our orders are not to intervene but for now things are quiet on the frontline the ceasefire has bought some time but not trust and president assad supporters don't want to see his victories against the islamists stop at it live even if it means risking heavy casualties. let's get a quick check now some other stories making news around the world officials say that brags that negotiators have not yet sealed a deal on britain's divorce terms this despite earlier speculation fueled by
