4:00 pm
this is due to be a news line from berlin german police and the hostage situation at colognes main train station the hostage has been freed but is reportedly injured her captor is now in custody will be live in columbus also coming up a man involved in the september eleventh attacks is released from prison in germany authorities say he will now be deported to his home country in morocco and won't be allowed back into germany. must do better german chancellor angela merkel says she needs to do more to regain the public's trust after her conservative allies
4:01 pm
suffered massive losses in both various regional elections. plus a deal comes into effect today to end the fighting in syria's last rebel held province but the agreement is already under threat with one rebel group vowing to keep fighting. and there's a need to movement gather steam in india bollywood star tanisha to talk tells t w how she was sexually harassed by a fellow actor but her pleas for help match with no action. i'm sorry so most of it is good to have you with us german police have ended a hostage situation at a major train station in germany that this is in the western city of cologne along the rhine river you'll see here in the map now police say the hostage has been freed and the suspect is quote under control the station is a major hub for passengers traveling around germany and europe and a train. rafiq has been affected by the police operation. well let's get an update
4:02 pm
we have that he's dean martin just outside the train station where he's been monitoring events for us hi david what are you hearing from police. so the latest we're hearing now is that the situation the emergency is over we're in sort of a deescalation process now so the perpetrator has been critically injured in a police raid on the stations of the church was holding one victim hostage inside the pharmacy shop inside the station. they believe they freed the hostage she is in she was likely injured in the area in the police range and is being treated on location the perpetrator as i said critically injured been taken to hospital the station behind me remains closed for the time being last i heard is that there are groups of policemen and of the task force officers who was watching the station
4:03 pm
making sure there's no signs of any other explosions explosives or anything like that before they reopen the station to the public david it seems have been a very dramatic situation and this is a very busy train station you have heard from at least one witness what did they tell you. that's right we heard the group of reporters behind me we all gathered up to listen to one witness give a statement of what she said was that she was in the inside the main entrance of the station when she heard screaming coming out of one of the restaurants and when she looked she still had two girls running out one of the girls her leg was put into the lake were on fire and that's what she was saying fire reaching up to around her waist tight group of people tried to help her to put out the fire and people were sort of scrambling to help put out the remaining flames that were coming out of the restaurant it's still unclear how this ties in together with the high. stich situation because that was taking place you know pharmacy and sure what
4:04 pm
she said is that she didn't see what was happening in the pharmacy at that point before she was then made to evacuate the station so it's unclear if the if the girl who reportedly had turned and laid her legs set on fire was eventually the hostage or if this girl made it out of there that's what we're chills trying to still trying to find out here now david a lot of pieces of information still missing waiting for police to give more information has there been any word on a possible motive in this hostage taking. no word yet so the perpetrator is in critical condition being taken to hospital and doctors actually trying to revive him or resuscitation so he's unconscious this will be very at the moment police reluctant to speculate as to what the motive could be with this terror related will or anything like that soon or nothing that we know
4:05 pm
yet i have heard some members around two still unconfirmed reports that the perpetrator and the victim you each other or there was some sort of relation between them all but it's still unclear if that is think if that is indeed the case it's unclear what that relationship would be i'm hearing that's what we have heard from the police is that the victim was a teenage girl to i have heard other reports again unconfirmed that the that the perpetrator was an older man possibly in his sixty's already and yes it just moments that i'm hearing from other reporters and as you said david a lot of unconfirmed information around there but what we do know is that it's police say they do have the situation under control there at the cologne main train station our correspondent david martin thank you very much. now on to some other news and an accomplice in the september eleventh attacks on the united states has been released from prison in germany. was arrested in two thousand and one and
4:06 pm
convicted on hamburg in two thousand and six of helping three of the nine eleven attackers german authorities say he will be deported to morocco. on nine eleven two thousand and one al-qaeda terrorists took control of four passenger planes full of civilians and flew them into the world trade center and the pentagon a fourth crashed into a field in pennsylvania roughly three thousand people were killed the terrorist attacks were the largest ever under us soil they were put into action by a group of young men in germany which became known as the hamburg terrorist cell one of the most money and mortar sadik the moroccan student was the only man to be sentenced in germany in connection with the attacks it took more than five years of trials and appeals for germany to convict him he was sentenced to fifteen years for being an accessory to the murders of two hundred forty six people aboard the hijacked planes and membership of a terrorist organization sadik never denied being friends with the hijackers but
4:07 pm
says he knew nothing about their nine eleven plans he was brought from this prison in hamburg to the city's airport for deportation to morocco he's banned from returning to germany until his ninetieth birthday by the authorities who still deem him dangerous back home in morocco his wife and children are thought to be waiting for him. did abuse naomi conrad has been following story for us and joins us in our studio now me why is he being released for deportation now he's being released about four weeks early and he's also received an entry ban until his ninetieth birthday as we heard in the report which means should come back authorities can put him back in jail for the remainder of the his time so about four weeks. time they could try to figure out what to do with him next tell us more about who he is how dangerous is he you know what role did he play he was actually quite minor in the group i mean he did go to an al qaeda training camp in afghanistan. that's quite clear but while the group of pilots were training as
4:08 pm
pilots in america the ones who actually then hijacked the planes he was back in hamburg he handled their bank transfers he tried to conceal their whereabouts and he also signed atoms we'll say in a way he was quite small but then he's one of the few survivors the question about how dangerous he is is a little bit difficult i mean most experts agree that he's unlikely to join or maybe even the self-proclaimed state but he obviously does have some propaganda value in that they question what will happen with him whether he can and will be used as a symbol of propaganda as you know someone who helped at least was part of the group that perpetrated these terrible attacks so what awaits him now in morocco well he's going to join his family at the big question is what the authorities in morocco to do with him i'm pretty sure they'll keep very close tabs on him maybe even interrogate him the big question is what the americans will do will they spirit him away they'll at least want to be part of any interrogation if and when it happens that's clear there's quite
4:09 pm
a good cooperation between the moroccan an american security agencies so pretty sure they'll be watching quite closely what happens in morocco. conrado following all the latest developments of the story for us thank you know me. now to some other stories making news around the world british and euna go shader say they have not been able to seal a brags that deal the head of an e.u. summit this week despite a flurry of meetings on sunday that used chief negotiator michel barnier tweeted that the key issues were still open in particular the need to avoid a hard border between northern ireland and the irish republic. kensington palace says prince harry and his wife the duchess of sussex are expecting their first baby in the spring the announcement comes as harry and megan arrived in sydney at the start of a sixteen day trip to australia and the pacific region. germany's governing coalition is facing an uncertain future after uncle america's allies in bavaria suffered a huge defeat in a regional election leaders of germany's three coalition parties are meeting to
4:10 pm
discuss the way forward after voters delivered what's being called a resoundingly slap to the government that chancellor angela merkel spoke a little earlier at a conference on foreign trade in services and it was her first appearance since the bavarian election she said it was clear her government has work to do and in the grand coalition has not succeeded in doing what i had tried to do so far and the lesson that i have learned from yesterday's elections is that as the german chancellor behind the coalition need to do more to ensure that we regain people's trust and that we deliver on our promises and i will do that as best i can. bring in political correspondent thomas sparrow he is following the story for us hi thomas good to see you chancellor merkel there promising to regain trust what do you make of that is that really a concession that things aren't going well. yes it is a concession that things are going well we heard that and i'm going to cause
4:11 pm
statement there if she was under pressure before these elections so i mean it is clear that these elections have only increased that pressure not only because of the bad results at the conservative side in bavaria but also the bad results of the social democrats have there as well there's only increases the pressure on the federal government as a whole obviously i'm going to merkel talks there about regaining trust this is something that we've also heard before the question there being how one of the elements that have been discussed in the aftermath of the very election but also previously is not only focusing on migration which as we know has been sort of the key overwhelming topic in recent years but trying to focus on other areas that for voters not only in bavaria but in other parts of germany as well are also particularly important health care education infrastructure that's one aspect those are areas where angela merkel and her government could find work to try as she said to regain the trust of the voters is this trend that we're seeing people moving away from the traditional parties significant reshaping of the german political
4:12 pm
system i would say so indeed if you see that at a federal level you can also see that the big traditional parties on the center left or on the center right have been losing ground and ground has been gained by a small political party some of which are on the fringes of the political spectrum for example the far right alternative for germany but it is also important to stress that this is not only a german phenomenon to it is it is indeed a european phenomenon in many other european countries you see a very similar phenomenon the big traditional party is losing ground and voters turning all shifting to other smaller parties thomas the big question now chancellor merkel can she remain in power. well that is indeed a big question that's at least i think what she what she hopes for the government hopes but as i said earlier there is a lot of pressure and there was a lot of pressure before there's even more pressure now on the pressure will also increase let's not forget to me that there are elections in the state of hesse that coming up only you know a few weeks time on both the conservatives and the social democrats who want to get
4:13 pm
a good result otherwise we could certainly start to see more and more and more problems on her coalition government at the federal level all right our political correspondent thomas sparrow thank you so much thomas now with deal to end the fighting in northern syria comes into effect today but it's already under strain and al-qaeda linked jihadist group hasn't yet put down their weapons and has declared it will keep fighting it province is the last major rebel held area in the country millions of people are trapped between there and the turkish border and government and rebels have agreed to withdraw from a buffer zone of the edge of the disputed area which includes the town of moore back there the deal is largely holding delivering a respite to inhabitants. first fell to rebels four years ago government forces for to retake it this is what is left after repeated attacks and counterattacks with strikes barrel bombs tanks and heavy artillery. amid
4:14 pm
the devastation signs of life. people are coming back and trying to rebuild their lives and their homes this was muhammad ali's homes. we're shocked by what we found destroyed houses no infrastructure no services electricity or water in the streets the schools the hospitals there's nothing in a city. maybe families are bringing their children home too many too young to remember what marek used to be like. because marek is in the demilitarized zone the number of families returning is growing fast. and we have so many more students now we were hardly able to welcome them or so the teachers
4:15 pm
decided to repair some of the schools themselves. if the buffer zone becomes reality and holds people in mark will be safe at least for a while titians i beg your pardon but several dozen have also fighting to turkey for trying to stop a massacre that they see russia and the syrian government was planning now this statement is being seen as not an outright admission that they will be giving up their weapons or that they will be evacuating the said buffer zone oh a box they actually might rajan really is what the experts of analyzing it to be at this moment we don't know whether the deal will hold or not but that's far too loose if you go but it is holding and russia said that it's not about a day or two as long as a deal is delivered on so we still need to see whether this move will get out and out it's still a bit ambiguous until let's play this for of what happens if the cease fire does not hold. but if it doesn't hold then the. government will get
4:16 pm
a knicks has to go in and attack they've already been saying they will be getting every inch of city and territory back it does give russia an excuse to win that's what the russians will then tell the most close this deal has come about because of turkey's epis but also because russia wanted to tell the world that they're not just. a responsible recent problems so they want to get that extent excuse it is also possible that the turkish boots on the ground take on this group along with the rebel factions sitting on the factions that they've been supporting and that will be quite complicated as well including remember that about two point five to two point nine million people in it if this deal doesn't work and we do see a conflict that could be pretty. pretty devastating until as questions have been swirling about the ceasefire elsewhere in syria to border crossings have opened one to jordan and the other to the israeli controlled golan heights how significant is that. well that's pretty good news actually because i mean even though the syrian government by opening these border crossings is trying to send a message that they're trying to normalize things that they have when it is
4:17 pm
a sign of the war nearing an end things perhaps beginning to return to normal is a positive move in fact it has an economic dimension because people living in around these border crossings will finally have some sort of work to do do any work because they were operating their businesses around these border crossings and of course an overall economic benefit as well but it also has a huge diplomatic and security dimension to it especially if you look at the israel syria border the opening of the border suddenly disputed because it's the golan heights but syria claims and it's occupied by israel that opening means the messes there is that we go back to preset an uprising phase where golan heights are disputed but the two countries were not an act of war so that is in itself a pretty significant move by syria and israel as well all in all the opening of border crossings of pauses. for us in beirut thank you very much

the course game is important to us. top of the league right now on the course of. the training ground and the new arena are only a few minutes drive apart it's never far to anywhere in a town of only two hundred ninety thousand people around this new stadium cost two hundred forty million euros moscow the region and the town shared the costs ahead of the twenty eight teams world cup the tournament left a legacy of modern infrastructure in its wake. the arena. is new and modern for players and spectators. we used to get fans at the games and now we get families with children coming to cheer as. is the. surrounds politicians were all for the town's world cup extravaganza they also drew up plans for the stadiums used after the final whistle. practice the same the world over is
4:22 pm
that about a stadium as a last make up it's only used for soccer. but also has to be used for a range of cultural and sporting events exhibitions that's the only way to make a stay. on the. surrounds the stadium gates only open nineteen times a year right now and only for soccer so many question the wisdom of all the expense . people here complain about the new stadium investment. not the government they decide where the money goes they could've spent it on schools or hospitals they don't let us decide. money and surrounds were happy with the old soccer stadium where the junior team trains a lot of those youngsters will be watching the professionals later in the new arena which office space for forty five thousand spectators. but most of the seats are empty. and no one sat in the sponsors boxes are either. doesn't have

we heard rushing water i turned on the light and it didn't work it was dark as i get out of bed in my feet or in the water i go towards to kitchen and try to open the door but it's impossible i forced it open and then there was water up to my waist to go because those. such rapid rainfall took its immediate toll in france's district at least one of the victims was swept away by raging waters while sleeping helicopters scrambled to help rescue people from roofs of their homes struggled with bad weather which made operations difficult some two hundred fifty five men and one hundred police have been deployed for the rescue efforts. it was really traumatizing for all our neighbors who were in the same situation i called the firemen it really happened so fast when they responded there was like a wave that came towards our front door the entire house was flooded the waters

rose to my thighs my idea. is that we need to fear ie asli flowing floodwaters have swept everything in their path trees power pylons cars. the region is better known for its mediæval towns them for such blooding of biblical proportions the worst the area has seen in a hundred years. to sports now and germany's national football team is at a new low point at last three nil to the netherlands over the weekend the biggest a feat ever to their traditional rivals and nerves job is now in question on tuesday the team faces world champions france. it's all downhill from here that's what yohimbe loves critics are predicting as the shop to call and since germany's disastrous world cup campaign continues his team has now failed to score in three straight competitive matches for the first time ever in the country's history germany or into injury of being relegated from the nation's league group.
4:26 pm
we are all being heavily criticised now as the coach have to take responsibility for what we somehow have to block that out in the next two days and show some character and face france because it's actually our last chance promised changes to the teams playing style have failed to materialise despite the poor results some of germany's old guard belief they're still performing. probably be accused of not being critical enough but i don't think we played a bad game against them. we have a lot of top players we usually have a good national team and are being treated like amateurs if you follow. yet among the teams younger players the so for flexion has been more critical. we do not make the mistake of talking or proper form and says if you're always losing in such a way that it can no longer be a coincidence. something needs to change that much is clear

another abject performance against france on tuesday and even more fans will be calling for love to pack hughes bags. you're watching news still to come your top star bollywood star who kicked off the me to movement in india she opened the floodgates for many more women to tell their stories for her and fellow activists it's still far from smooth sailing and here in germany the first ever opus classic awards featuring some of the big names in classical music and even benny andersson from swedish pop and abba. plus the president of cuba gets a twitter account but you got to say we'll tell you more coming up in the next thirty minutes. thing who wanted to survive in this journalist and why. go back not one i can. shout all the enemy is. forty five journalists

floodgates have indeed opened in india seven minutes taken to social media to make their complaints public against editors and even government ministers i think it's an awful warning at least for some time for men to sort of at least they can second guess themselves and say you know me i'm not doing the right thing seeing that i put an industry that treats its leading me the stars with legendary adulation the me too moment may have come as an unexpected twist in the t.v. . i mean one of whom buys the biggest and most of my comic bollywood studios hundreds of films. but is this really bollywood smee to moment yes and no yes because at least some people are willing to talk about these issues though because some of hollywood's biggest stars have chosen to remain silent about the meta dumping. as the industrial is unfamiliar to its earth will it take up this

jonze to clean things up over will it be business as usual. now a political leader using twitter to get a message to the public is nothing special unless you're the president of cuba miguel diaz has become cuba's first tweeting president which seems to be at odds with the country he leads when the least connected and most controlled countries in the world let's talk more about that with our social media editor federica what is cuba's president tweeting about so the us can and he became president in april ending nearly sixty years of the custer family rule and he put out his first treat on wednesday it was a national holiday in cuba and he wrote this he said well we're in the mahogany which is in the south of cuba the place where with the greatest sound of patriotic feelings we are cuba and we are continuing team so of course
4:35 pm
a tweet glorify. cuba's communist run a state which of course got a lot of attention straight away is the first cuban president to tweet and he has been tweeting a lot seems he tweeted since seventy times in the last five days which is a lot and he has also gotten a solid following with more than thirty thousand accounts not following him and that of course he has also opened a platform for critics to directly speak against him at him and we've seen that a lot of critics have slammed his new twitter presence they have replied to his tweet calling for more freedom for cuba which is a country that is ranked as you also mentioned as strong not free also by observers like the freedom house for example we have a tweet here by a leading opposition figure who is based outside of cuba she responded to the tweet saying president to become president you have to be elected by the people in free
4:36 pm
fair and open elections don't be ridiculous so of course you also get the criticism . then there's no building up he's network he has his following seventeen accounts so far it's mainly government pro-government media outlets and politicians also from other countries like the venezuelan president. who would oh he it would be interesting to see whether opening up to criticism from the internet will have any bearings on him what use of social media is also restricted in cuba so is this actually going to be effective for the president to reach the cubans that he wants to on twitter well generally speaking cuba doesn't block. firms like twitter or facebook they do block some internet pages. from the opposition but the thing is cuba has also some of the world's worst interests internet internet access pardon me so of course that in itself is a form of censorship in
4:37 pm
a way. in fact home and mobile access is almost nonexistent about less than ten percent of cubans have internet at home in order to access the internet you need to to buy a prepaid card from one of the government controlled the telecommunications companies and you can use that as a public a wife i bought and then the axes itself is really expensive it's about one dollar per hour it was the average income being being thirty dollars a month so it really is not affordable for many many cubans and the speed is very slow so as i mentioned in the old this amounts to a form of censorship itself and the cuban government has promised to bolster the digital infrastructure we'll have to see if the president's now having a twitter account is a step in that direction ok our social media editor federica baggio thanks so much for bringing us that story. now more than three million people have fled

family reasons spain is the number one destination for venezuelans fleeing their country. of the united nations refugee agency explained the reality of the asylum application process in spain is the cases of people waiting one or two years and that includes venezuela one process to stay in the country must be cancelled or closed before another can begin one person who has been in spain seeking international protection who's been seeking asylum for two or three years can then include that time in other processes for immigrants to legalize and selves they can use it to prove they have settled in spain or seek spanish nationality. for immediate the legal limbo has been difficult but he remains positive about his new life in madrid. i don't know what's going to happen sometimes i feel positive sometimes i feel down sometimes i really want to push forward but other times i
