a second day. and saudi arabia faces growing international skepticism over it story of what happened to missing a journalist. the kingdom is now saying he was killed after weeks of denying any involvement. i knew cooper's mckinnon welcome to the program. mexican authorities have allowed dozens of women and children from a u.s. bound one juror in migrant groups to enter the country but hundreds remain stranded on a border bridge between guatemala and mexico around two thousand under and left the country a week ago hoping to leave behind violence and poverty there for a better life in the united states but on that difficult journey north they have

not been received with open arms. the crossing at the mexican border is sealed but this gate can't stop everyone hundreds of migrants took the chance and jumped into the water right next to the border bridge crossing the sujata river into mexico. many hope to reach the united states. is a possible that's ok it won't stop our dreams the american dream that we need to be on the other side now we've already suffered a lot we had to swim across. on saturday mexico had officially allowed dozens of women and children to enter its territory they were completely exhausted from days of walking in the. afternoon some recover in a nearby refugee camp. they are all part of a migrant caravan from honduras

a country full of danger that offers them few opportunities. most at that. is not this is not about politics this is not about benefiting anyone this is about self wellbeing it's about financial independence that is about our children family our life it's about hunger hunger above all which is why we need to push ahead i am and this is why we're taking such risk and have come this far. is that one has that. but not everyone seems willing to take these risks anymore. as in two thousand people have already been returned safely two hundred territory we also understand that at the moment there are some migrants on buses and small buses all routes towards and to us. u.s. president donald trump had threatened to cut aid to the region if authorities did
10:04 am
not stop the caravan at an event in arizona he kept up his rhetoric against the migrants these are some bad people coming through there these are our babies little angels coming into our country these are some hardened criminals coming. and will not let me move. but these migrants who made it to the other side of the border are not willing to give up on the american dream. the hundred and showed solidarity with their compatriots still stuck at the border by singing their national anthem. the u.s. president donald trump has told reporters that the u.s. will unilaterally pull out of a nuclear arms agreement with russia the landmark intermediate range nuclear forces tracy was negotiated by then president ronald reagan and soviet leader mikhail gorbachev more than thirty years ago it bans nuclear and conventional missiles with

ranges of five hundred to fifty five hundred kilometers russia has violated the agreement they'd been violated here for many years and i don't know why president obama didn't negotiate or pull out. there we're not going to let them violate the nuclear agreement they go out of their weapons and we're not allowed to we're the ones that have stayed in the agreement and we've honored the agreement but russia is not fortunately on to the agreement so we're going to terminate their group and we're going to pull out. all thirty's in afghanistan say a roadside bomb has killed at least eleven people including several children in the eastern province of nunga the attack raises the number of people killed and wounded to nearly two hundred during the country's parliamentary elections now entering a second day almost nine million people were eligible to cost ballots and turnout was larger than expected even as poll chaos caused delays and violence mond voting

. dozens of people died across the country and more than one hundred ninety attacks on saturday as people went to the polls on the first day of voting a suicide bombing in front of a polling station in the capital kabul may have been the deadliest or doctors said that three people were killed there and six wounded but government sources say fifteen died both the local islamic state affiliate and the taliban have threatened violence during the elections. oh despite the threats many people seem eager to vote almost nine million are registered to cast their ballots in the election for the lower house of parliament ordinary afghans have expressed cautious hope. oh it's their right to vote today i came out here and voted for my favorite come to that and did my part for the future of afghanistan. on the phone footage of a time when stuff in war income flanks and now i've come here to vote for person
10:07 am
who should wait to bring security to the country i ask people to come and fight for prosperity in afghanistan not. it's a major step that these elections are happening at all they were originally scheduled to be held three years ago but ongoing instability has forced many delays ten candidates have been assassinated then just this past week an attack in kandahar province killed the chief of police and wounded the provincial governor leading to further delays in the province elections there are planned for next week the main target in that attack could well have been the us commander in afghanistan general scott miller although he denies it he escaped injury and encouraged afghans not to be intimidated present to the people of afghanistan has been very consistent and you have every right to be proud of your security forces and the preparations that move for this election despite this unfortunate event tragic event down to ten are voters are choosing representatives for the two hundred forty nine seat lower

house a strong turnout could well indicate that functioning institutions work bolstering the government's legitimacy in the eyes of the people voting continues on sunday at a number of other polling stations the final electoral results won't be known for at least a week. and joining us now is a. journalist in kabul thanks for being that the polls are now open on day two op people still voting given the violence. we'll see how many people actually turn out today what we've seen is that four hundred polling centers are real and more than four hundred and then least forty of them are here in kabul. so we'll see who actually comes out but what we have to remember is that more than the threat of violence because people came out three million people came out yesterday despite the threats of violence to basic sure there was logistical issues you know the fact the polling centers were open the fact that there weren't ballot boxes that they weren't ballot papers that there was an election commission staff these were the
10:09 am
issues that kept people from voting more so than anything because people did brave the taliban month and didn't come out and numbers. so given the violence and the chaos that management of the elections that you were just talking about do they have any chance at all of delivering a credible result we'll see this when the results come out because what we can see is the break now candidates who are upset you know i've spoken to several candidates what are upset about the situation they're generally keeping quiet in the media because what we'll see is how the election pans out if when candidates are disqualified there's a very good chance that what they'll end up thinking is that you know these ballots were improper what happened overnight when these ballots were left in the voting centers and delayed until the next day so we'll really see what happens once the results come out they'll definitely be challenge though and people will have good grounds by which to challenge them and why did these elections matter much the

whole country's future because people here are fed up with the parliament they feel like the parliament you know i've talked to several candidates in the realm of the over two weeks of campaigning and they've all said that everyone we spoke to is fed up with this parliament is parliament they say is a network of corruption that they say is a mafia that they say doesn't represent the people and you know so many people complain that we go to see our representatives in parliament and they don't open their doors they don't come talk to us so this was a hope for something new. thanks so much for joining us you. now countries around the world have condemned the killing of saudi journalist jamal khashoggi state media in saudi arabia said he died in the saudi consulate in istanbul off to a fistfight for more than two weeks the saudis have denied because should she was dead the european union says the circumstances of his death are deeply troubling
10:11 am
and has called for a transparent investigation and the chance that i'm going to machall has called the saudi explanation inadequate u.s. president trump called the saudi account credible the latest that there had been just stepped in and lives and threatened severe consequences. i'm just joined now by middle east historian try talk from the lightness lightness center of modern oriental studies thanks so much for joining us. how precarious is the situation for saudi arabia is it in danger of being sidelined on the international stage given the international outcry well i think we have to distinguish the regional and the international repercussions over there of course untangled regionally turkey can now try to somehow take the role of the international leader of the sunni countries sunni muslim countries from saudi arabia where is iran and kut-o. saudis regional foes sitting on the sidelines and enjoying themselves i guess
10:12 am
internationally the alliance with the u.s. which of course has repercussions for the relations between iran seems and the threat although president trump has played a rather dubious role so far in this u.k. now germany's foreign minister has now called sales to saudi arabia into question let's have a listen to what he had to say. there are many in consistencies first they said the saudi journalist left the consulate. now they say he died there are more questions unanswered than answered. there is an ongoing investigation and it's up to the saudis to provide clarification. we are following this closely so far we have a lot more questions than answers. ok now that been calls for years for germany to stop selling arms to saudi arabia is it going to be different this time well i
10:13 am
think the main difference is really the international attention that is suddenly being paid to the saudi leadership because the tragic born yemen has been going on for quite a number of years now there have been a million well thousands of. dead and. over a million threatened by starvation and cholera and so on in there has been also human rights violations within saudi arabia notably strongly increased ever since king so man took the reins of power so i think the main difference really is now the international attention ok now as you mentioned the crown prince mohammed bin salah selman had positioned himself as a reformer he was wanted to be seen as a modernizer of saudi arabia could killing now cost him his position and his or thorazine at home that's a very interesting question and i think the the answer is. on the one hand yes there has been a lot of internal dissent unhappiness notably within the row family part of which
10:14 am
was of course incarcerated last autumn and winter on the other hand of course all the rivals have been sidelined so dramatically that it's unclear whether he will actually be able to weather the storm and i think here. the international reaction will be quite important i think if the media keep asking what has happened to her so she and if they keep insisting that this kind of author a tarion rule is impossible then perhaps there's a chance for change within the royal family not general turned to democracy or something like this i think they can fight it out from the lightness center from what an oriental studies thank you so much for joining us thank you. now unfortunate there's no sports so you on the show today but don't fret football founds kline will have all of the goals from that day eight of the bundesliga right
10:15 am
