who've been shot a suspect is being held in custody and we'll go live to our correspondent. welcome to the program turkish president. and other world leaders have called for a syrian led and syrian owned political process to bring peace to the water nation the call comes at the conclusion of a four nation summit held in istanbul the leaders of turkey germany france and russia met to find a political solution to syria's devastating seven yes civil war they've called for a constitutional committee to be set up in the country by the end of the year and for the united nations to play an active role. for more we're now joined by correspondent emily show in who is in moscow so emily what russia's expectations
7:02 pm
getting into this summit and do you think they've been fooled well russia very much downplayed expectations going into this summit meeting the kremlin spokesperson. said that they shouldn't we shouldn't expect any big breakthroughs he emphasized that this was just the first meeting and today in the press conference we saw putin as well talk about a business like atmosphere so certainly this is the first meeting of what putin will hope is one of many one thing that the russian the russian side did achieve is to be recognized as it were on the world stage as an important player in syria and in the middle east today state t.v. was talking about the fact that russia was part of creating this sort of new format on syria as they were calling it and today in the press conference putin also talked about kind of uniting several formats for peace talks in syria he talked about the format which includes turkey russia and iran and also the small group
7:03 pm
which includes germany france and also the u.s. he said that those two formats would be uniting forces and now we have to see what that means going forward and one other thing that russia had wanted to achieve was aid for government controlled areas of syria that's something that germany has very much spoken out against it's not clear whether there was any movement on that putin simply said that they had discussed the fact that france had provided aid to some assad controlled areas and we'll have to see whether germany plays ball on that i mean you obviously as you were describing there are some shared goals the booth to russia show on the syria question but they do have sometimes different and even competing interests what are they. well absolutely actually russia and turkey on on are on opposing sides of this conflict with russia supporting the
7:04 pm
syrian government of the assad regime and and turkey supporting the rebels the opposition but they have actually been working very closely together i think you could see that today as well turkey at turkey's aired on giving the opening statements and then passing on to what he always calls his dream his friend putin they've worked to get together closely on syria in this format that i mentioned before which also includes iran and just last month month they also signed a deal on a deescalation zone around live there by basically averting a humanitarian crisis there so they certainly are on opposing sides but have been working very closely together in the new element here today is france and germany. and really briefly if you can to keep missing from this summit obviously looking at u.s. and iran will this such will affect the outcome of the summit today well
7:05 pm
all sides today have been talking about widening kind of discussions. spoke today about the fact that he will certainly or that iran will certainly be briefed about all the results of today's meeting and if they do kind of unite these two talks these two formats the format and the small group that will also mean that the u.s. will be at the table. so we'll have to kind of see what that means going forward i think emily showing in moscow thank you. well police in the u.s. city of pittsburgh say there are multiple casualties following a shooting at a synagogue local media say at least four people were killed and twelve shot police with rifles quickly surrounded the tree of life synagogue in the school hill neighborhood after reports of an active shooter the area is about ten minutes from downtown pittsburgh police say three responding officers were among those wounded

7:07 pm
a multiple people and injuring several others he also apparently shot several police officers and later turned himself in to police officers who took him into custody where he is now it's being investigated what about the victims we know that they've been confirmed fatalities any word on that. well what we do know is that. this synagogue is located in. the biggest jewish neighborhood in pittsburgh and the services the shot services would have meant that probably the lot of people coming to the synagogue on this on this morning. and being possibly a target for this for this shooter. right and michael we know that it's not long since this shooting happened have there been any reaction so far.
7:08 pm
well president trump sent out a couple of tweets about about the incident telling his followers god bless and condemning the act and he just short a short while ago before boarding air force one on a flight spoke briefly to gaggle of reporters and called the shooting a terrible terrible thing and denounced the shooter as a madman and maniac and interestingly he also mused about. that that. the death toll for the for this shooting might have been lowered to if the synagogue. had armed guards to protect it michael can you get with the latest from our washington studio thank you. let's not have a look at some of the other stories making news around the world police in mexico have abandoned a blockade they formed in the south of the country to stop thousands of migrants

quite calm and police have told some of the protesters that if they don't want to participate in the action in march they're allowed to leave and there will be any further action however at the moment they're planning to stay here for the evening all right and us can you just give us the backgrounds to these demonstrations. yes basically these there protesters have been on this disputed property this home but forest which they claim is twelve thousand years old and some of them have been there for over six six seven years and they're basically saying if germany he's hoping to phase out coal in the near future why would our deputy be expanding coal mines now he is basically saying that these this coal mine by digging by mining in the humbucker for as they will be able to provide a percentage of necessary energy to the region and to germany. all right
7:12 pm
i can hear the demonstrators chanting in the background perhaps you can tell us what they're saying and also tell me what they hope to achieve at the end of the day today. absolutely well at the moment they're just they're just cheering combi and just calling for a call to action same now we need to continue the action here. and essentially what they would like to see is is just likely a statement from the company saying that they're not doing. for that basically that there would not be an expansion of the open coal mine now that's not looking likely at the moment are dubious issued a statement saying right we're in this for the long run and we're not worried about the situation the report thank you. feels like a completely long time ago but the summer here was extremely hot and dry and that

has left what's always a direct levels causing chaos for germany's shipping industry and billions of euros of losses experts are warning the problem could become more and more common across europe as global temperature has arrived. water levels in major rivers like the danube in the mine a far lower than they normally would be at this time of year but things are most extreme in germany's east. in magda burg the elbow is a tough it's normal level so low that no ships carrying goods have been able to post through for months on waterways that are still navigable now levels have led to increased traffic as companies pack less weight onto more boats that's driving up prices for freight and field. is often followed damage has definitely been done for example petrol stations around cologne no longer have enough diesel or
7:14 pm
petrol for all vehicles so there is into the shortage already. in berlin the river play normally flows to the west into the how awful river but lately water has been travelling in the other direction deck a lad from the city's environment department says the situation is precariously. the us east of germany doesn't get much rain anyway and this summer pretty much got norm if it doesn't ring sustainably for a long time then we have problems we won't get enough water and then we have to close the sluices. forecasters hope rain over the next week will boost water levels in the german capital at least temporarily. and time for a reminder of the top story we're following for you. made seeking a peaceful settlement in syria is calling for
