for god's w.c. for focus. this is the news line from berlin fresh efforts to find peace in syria turkish president trichet. new constitution for the war torn country has been hosting his russian french and german counterparts at a summit in istanbul the meeting is seeking a political settlement to syria seven years. also in the show multiple fatalities at a synagogue in a gunman killed several people at
8:01 pm
a jewish house of worship in the city of pittsburgh police officers are among those who have been shot the suspect is being held in custody we'll go live to our correspondent. thank you for joining us turkish president. and other world leaders have called for a syrian led and syrian political process to bring peace to the water nation the call comes at the conclusion of a four nation summit held in istanbul the leaders of turkey germany france and russia met to find a political solution to syria's devastating. war they have called for a constitutional committee to set up in the country by the end of the year german chancellor angela merkel stressed that's the united nations must ultimately play an active role in any peace deal. it's good to miss it actually this is about being
8:02 pm
able to end two wounds one war against terrorism the other that of the syrian regime against a substantial part of its own population a successful overall solution cannot be military in the end only a political solution can be successful a solution that's under the aegis of the united nations. for we're now joined by correspondent syria hand in istanbul and emily showing who is in moscow thank you both for joining me so you are let's begin with you because you were at the press conference what was the big takeaway from that. well first of all this is the first time that the two very powerful european leaders sturman chancellor merkel and french president mccraw a sitting down at the same table with a turkey and russia both actors on the ground in syria but on opposite sides of the conflict to talk about these war torn countries futures so this is an unusual
8:03 pm
summit turkey for example has been talking to iran and russia lately most most of the time the process is the so-called us town a process but that has been you know observed with a certain kind of suspicion by the so-called west so now we have the european leaders here as well and as chancellor merkel put it it is an unusual form and we have our differences but we had constructive and productive talks this is an important take away from today now they were specifically specifically talking about the situation in lip syria as the last major rebel outpost you remember turkey and russia brokered a deal last month to avert a bloody offensive by the syrian government now merkel and mccall expressed their hopes that this deal this truce basically can be turned into a permanent cease fire they both also said they have zero tolerance for any kind of chemical attacks in any part of syria actually and the general impression my
8:04 pm
general impression is that all of the four leaders all hoping that the situation in italy if they can really come up with a permanent ceasefire can give a certain momentum to greater peace efforts in the rest of syria as well so now for the first time actually you know the they were not sitting down to discuss any kind of emergency military situations in syria but they were actually sitting down to talk about the country's future and as you mentioned a political situation which is of course maybe one of the most difficult political undertakings in international politics right now all right let's go to emily who is in moscow what will lead to me of putin's goals going into this summit and has he made progress towards achieving them. well the russian side very much downplayed their expectations going into this summit when it comes to the actual results they said that there shouldn't you shouldn't expect any breakthroughs but one thing that they certainly wanted was recognition that russia is one of the main players when
8:05 pm
it comes to working out serious political future and i think that they certainly showed that today going into this summit russian state t.v. was reporting that this was a new format after the astronaut process that russia also took part in creating that you just mentioned which includes turkey and iran that this was a new kind of format and it does seem indeed that they are kind of uniting forces that in no way turkey and russia are inviting americal and and mccall to their table so that's certainly a position of strength and also one thing that russia certainly wants is stability in syria one thing that they have been demanding with regards to that is aid to syrian controlled areas. germany hasn't been playing ball when it comes to that so far they've said that they won't be supporting the assad regime in that sense but russia has a lot of leverage here so we'll have to see because they they really are really the
8:06 pm
main backers of the assad regime and they can kind of control how assad will be playing ball in this process as well when it comes to it live when it comes to the constitution so perhaps we'll see russia throwing their weight around in future negotiations there emily showing in moscow and you heard in istanbul thank you both officials in the u.s. city of pittsburgh say there are multiple fatalities following a shooting at a synagogue and least four people were killed and six injured when the gunman opened fire inside the house of worship police say at least three responding officers were among those wounded and the suspect is in police custody. the scene of the crime a synagogue in the neighborhood of screw hill pittsburgh. shortly after the shooting many questions remain what is clear is that several people injured
8:07 pm
including police officers who were quick to move in and surround the tree of life synagogue. so at this time. the suspect in the shooting is in custody we have multiple casualties inside the synagogue we have three officers who have been shot at this and we have no more information because we are still clearing the building and trying to figure out. if the situation is safe if there are any more threats inside the building so that all we have at this point minutes after a suspect was detained president donald trump denounced the attack saying it was more devastating than feared a terrible terrible thing. hate. in our country for the world. nothing after something. yet another mass shooting in the u.s. the country in mourning yet again michael can you has been following that story and
8:08 pm
joins us now from our washington studio so michael police say that they've arrested a suspect what do we know about him. well according to multiple media reports the man who is alleged to have committed this heinous crime is a white male in his forty's from pittsburgh who had previously expressed an tyson made a can white supremacist views on social media and apparently reportedly he had also used anti-semitic slurs and comments during the attack and also during talking with police later so obviously investigators are now looking into this man's views as as a possible motive for this crime and do we know any more about how this shooting unfold it. well we know that that this man let's shoot a walked into this mosque into the synagogue early this saturday morning were shot
8:09 pm
services were going on and started shooting at the people inside the mosque he also injured several police officers who confronted him and he later turned himself into into police custody where he's being held now was also important now is that this investigation is now being taken over by the f.b.i. since this is being treated as a hate crime now the f.b.i. takes take this investigation over from local officials since this is now a federal investigation and what what was also interesting is was that pittsburgh's public safety director who gave a impromptu press conference just recently just said that the area is now deemed safe there have been no explosives found there and that the lockdown had been lifted but what was really striking was that that this veteran official really had a tough time talking about the incident which he described as one of the worst crime
8:10 pm
scenes he had ever witnessed and given what that official has said what has been the reaction to this shooting. well there has been a wide condemnation in this act. from u.s. politicians and officials and president trump who had tweeted while this event was still unfolding twice briefly talked to reporters before boarding air force one for a flight that and he called this shooting a terrible terrible thing and the suspect. a maniac and a madman any also said interestingly that that this might if and been prevented or at least the death toll might at the lower of this of this attack if the synagogue had had armed security guards to protect it michael can you go with the very latest from our washington studio thank you as now look at some of the other stories
