business. multiple fatalities at a synagogue in the united states a gunman killed several people at a jewish house of worship in the city of its fifth police officers are among those who've been shot a suspect is being held in custody. also in the program a fresh pot to find peace in syria president demands a new constitution country he's been hosting his russian french and german counterparts at a summit in istanbul the meeting is seeking
9:01 pm
a political settlement to syria's civil war. i'm christine when well welcome to the program officials in the u.s. city off pittsburgh say they're all multiple fatalities following a shooting at a synagogue at least four people were killed and six injured when a gunman opened fire inside a house of worship but he say at least three responding officers were among those wounded and that a suspect is in custody. the scene of the crime a synagogue in the neighborhood of screw hill pittsburgh. shortly after the shooting many questions remain. clear is that several people injured including police officers who were quick to move in and surround the tree of life synagogue.
9:02 pm
so at this time. the suspect in the shooting is in custody we have multiple casualties inside the synagogue we have three officers who have been shot at this and we have no more information because we are still clearing the building and trying to figure out. if the situation is safe if there are any more threats inside the building so that's all we have at this point and it softer a suspect was detained president donald trump denounced the attack saying it was more devastating than feed. terror. repayed. in our country for the world. to be. yet another mass shooting in the u.s. a country in mourning yet again why did our spawn of michael kagan joins us from our washington studio hi michael police say they've received a suspect what do we know about him well that he is now
9:03 pm
detained by police and he has apparently a history of making anti-semitic and white's extremist views on social media he apparently also used a the rightwing twitter alternative. gaffe which is used by by a lot of white extra extremists. to denounce the jewish people and and and hatred so this is this is that's why officials all are now looking into this as a hate crime and investigating it as a hate crime and you guys taking over this investigation as a result there. michael has there been any reaction yet to the shooting. well president trump has come out just recently again and said this attack now looks certainly like an anti-semitic act earlier already denounced the attack as a terrible terrible thing and yet said. that that this perpetrator should
9:04 pm
perhaps receive the death penalty for this act vice president pence also came out now he's also traveling currently and he also announced that in strong terms and said that he was appalled by it and this was an attack on on religious freedom in the u.s. and he called this attack not just criminal but evil and also has been a. first response from israel's prime minister netanyahu was that he was shocked and appalled by this attack and and said that israel stands with the people of pittsburgh the jewish people of pittsburgh and also the americans. after this this and to semitic and crying. all right what do we know about how the shooting unfolded and the targets. well the shooter apparently walked
9:05 pm
into this the senegal this morning we're usually on a saturday shabat services take place and he opens fire. on the people inside the synagogue there which is lies in a in a leafy neighborhood in pittsburgh and support to know that this tree of life synagogue is this kind of a center of jewish life in pittsburgh it's the oldest congregation the oldest jewish congregations in pittsburgh and especially on a saturday there would have been a lot of people there are gathering to celebrate this about and yet a suspect suspected attacker went in there and shot. a lot of people and he then later. retreated and was accustomed to a cousin by police with him into custody you know. that state of new correspondent michael kay there reporting for us in washington. turkey's president
9:06 pm
richard sipe it on another will need as have called for a syrian led and syrian owned political process to bring peace to the war torn nation the cole comes at the conclusion of a four nation summit held in istanbul believed us off to germany france and russia to find a political solution to syria's devastating seven years civil war they have called for a constitutional committee to be set up in the country by the end of media german chancellor angela merkel stressed that the united nations must also make me pay an active role in any peace deal. it's good to miss it this is about being able to end to loose one war against terrorism the other that of the syrian regime against a substantial part of its own population a successful overall solution cannot be military in the end only a political solution can be successful a solution that's under the aegis of the united nations five nuts who would. all
9:07 pm
right i want to bring in our correspondents han in istanbul and emily chauvinism moscow you know i'll begin with you in istanbul you were at that press conference that tell us about what going to machall and other world leaders have to say about the talks they've had today. now this is the first time two very powerful european leaders german chancellor merkel and french president mccraw are sitting down at one table with a turkey and russia who are both actors on the ground in syria but on opposite sides of the conflict and despite their differences they all agree that the political process must be revived the political process for syria's future to end this war in syria must be revived this is quite an important political message i think they specifically called for a ceasefire in the province of live that's the last major rebel outpost in syria last month a turkey and russia brokered a deal they agreed on
9:08 pm
a demilitarized zone and this prevented a bloody offensive by the assad government on this was welcomed by germany and france and they say they hope that this deal can be turned into a more permanent ceasefire that's what they will be working for and my impression was that they all hope that this cease fire could then you know be a momentum for greater peace efforts for the rest of syria as well emily i come to you in moscow now what we have got amir pushing his goals going into the summit and has he made progress towards achieving them. well christine the russian side very much downplayed expectations going into this summit they said that there weren't going to be probably any big breakthroughs but one thing that they were expecting and that i think you can say they did it chief is a recognition that russia really is an important player in syria going forward and
9:09 pm
in syria in determining its political future as well now put in today talked about the success of the format the astronaut talks which is a piece format which was founded by russia turkey and iran he talked about the success of that and he said that that format could now be broadened to include other parties as well so what we saw today essentially was put in an arrow on inviting france and germany to sit at essentially their table and one other thing that we also saw today was that going into the talks russia was also hoping for stability and syria centrally they want a military foothold there they want it to be stable and they were hoping to coax the other two to coax france and germany into providing aid coverage in syria. when it comes to the assad regime and putin kind of made some threats in a way kept the door open to perhaps things escalating if live if things don't go
9:10 pm
the way he wants all right you know come back see you in istanbul and very briefly we've got two key global players in the syria conflict the u.s. and iran which were absent from the summit i mean how will this affect for the progress. well i think that's a fact that everybody was well aware of chancellor merkel said that this is just a four party summit that other you know nation's leaders must be and wolves as well particularly the u.s. and iran you were mentioning them russia's president putin also said that he will inform iran about the outcome so i think the bigger effort here is you know to bring all the to bring all these actors somehow together and not have like single different meetings because in the end if you decide about syria's future there are so many interests at stake and you have to bring them to the same table all right ladies thank you that syria han in istanbul in the show in is in moscow for us
