conference and let's go live to the s.p.d. headquarters and take a listen to how they're reacting to these latest developments to do a chance to america. again there's it's so how come i live in boston she said this morning we congratulated her tour sometimes after vikas morning for the efforts that he put into his election he spoke once again and gave us a very impressive speech about his election campaign and his analysis of the elections and in the body committee we talked about these two we often say lection campaigns in this state of the s.p.d. and the state of the german government it was a very frank discussion a very intense discussion and by and obviously this discussion isn't over yet we've all done it but i'm going to have executive committee meeting this weekend where we'll be debating these issues at length and obviously there are plenty of discussions that need to be had in the course of this election as we all agreed in
2:16 pm
the meeting that something fundamental needs to change something has to happen in. the country as a whole not least what's happening in the christian democrats as well in this country is really mukherjee and there's a huge polarized nation you know we both know as the coalition government wanted to work to get people's confidence again and so far we have to admit that the government hasn't managed to get people's trust so things have to change in the executive committee of the social democrats today we made a decision and we have started deliberating on it this was a special meeting that we had here and in a sense our coalition partners were registering a new one for the time option every minute there now sixty potential candidates for the christian democratic leadership so we will continue our debate on the weekend
2:17 pm
executive committee what we decided in the executive committee with three points the first regarding the social democratic party. things must change quite seriously here even after the german national elections we carried out merciless election analysis interesting conclusions from them and it was clear from it that it's not just working within the coalition that we want to be seen we need to profile and position ourselves we need to work on future oriented issues but what's come out of the last few hours is that we need to be a lot faster in this process of reform reform within the party we need to come to conclusions more quickly and there's a clear commitment from the executive. committee in the party leadership that we want these issues dealt with by the end of the air or the start january. and then there's the whole state of the german government and their knowledge said yesterday
2:18 pm
this situation here in the german government is not acceptable certain things must change and one thing we get in the party leadership is that and to be analysis is going to have intense debates with the christian democrats who are guarding a clear road plan for the german government in terms of draft laws that need to be passed by the end of twenty nineteen we've got an interim review that we want to carry out by then and we want to have some serious talks about how this german government comes across the issues that we've debated the conflicts within both the parties the union parties and the coalition as a whole all three of the parties in the german coalition need to pull all the stops out and work very hard to regain the trust of the electorate. thank you lars perhaps i could just make one statement and say that as
2:19 pm
a member of the party leadership nearest p.d. for me and i'd like to address the leadership of the c.d.u. chance america now. was chair of the party for eighteen years she defined her party for eighteen years which is an incredible achievement she took on the leadership of the city when the party was in a very deep crisis she was the first woman to take on this function. elected in this function by many men. and many men in her party many journalists male journalists as well said she was too weak but she not only stood to this pressure but she also. had a different form of leadership for her party and she set the course for her party in a new way she had a stronger will and she had stronger nerves than most of the critics in her party
2:20 pm
so on this day where she has said that she's not going to run as party chair again sorry i think this is. the c.d.u. really owes her gratitude now the long list of potential candidates for the position of c.d.u. party chairmen it's going to be a very exciting party congress which we will be watching with interest of course. but for us. this is the business of the c.d.u. and the union we have to put out our own house in order because the last says that we suffrage in and in the very have to motivate us for change we've been very clear about this the results were painful and we felt it today. very painful for us personally and for lars and myself because it's the first time that we have take. you know on this position and it's down to us now to draw the necessary
2:21 pm
consequences and for us what that means is that we need to. look at how we want to change in the future and how we can find new responses and we've started this debate we've presented a party position paper that we hope will be thought to get this debate going where we've set out some of the political directions that we feel we need to lead to electors that we believe have often led to his not having clear positions in the s.p.d. in recent months. because there hasn't been true consensus on some of these vectors and these include the question of exactly how we want to see a new positioning of the social state how can we break this down i'd like to have social state twenty twenty five what's going to come after the parts for your benefit packages we want to move forward with this and tackle this much
2:22 pm
faster than we planned a strong europe as well here in the run up to the european elections we need to have a clear orientation we need to overcome nation state templates and be consistently european in everything we do set out what we want and a strong functioning europe of course looking at how we can ensure everyone has a livelihood it's not about also about. climate goals it's not a matter of whether we're going to achieve the climate goals rather how to do it and we also have to set out issues like social justice labor prosperity and factor in the environmental side of the equation here and break down what that's going to mean and then come up with specific measures as to how to achieve this then we need to. be today. diffuse the investment backlog there's been a lot of debates about that and we didn't always have a clear statement on what this would mean either get
2:23 pm
a sense of the need to invest everywhere there's a very good economic environment as a whole here in germany what's going to happen if that changes we need to have a constant investment plan moving forward and here we need to have clarity so what are we trying to achieve with this sped the process of engaging with the issues we need to engage with where we want to have a clear compass in terms of everyday politics we need to reach a new consensus so that we can respond strongly with these issues and this is why we feel we need to engage with some of these issues because we believe that we haven't got a clear consensus here in terms of every day politics we're going to get bogged down in contradictions and disagreements and that's why we need to clarify these issues the other part of the position paper that was written looks at some of the
2:24 pm
issues based and timeline basis points that we have in the coalition we're still committed to the coalition but we do expect that this coalition get better that it improve that there be more harmony than there has been in recent months and there's a whole range of laws that we are trying to get off the ground in many areas the s.p.d.m. ministers have already. taken the. obstacle of the cabinet some of them we still have to get through cabinet we have to look at the time plan to make sure that we stick to the time plan because it's not enough just to. top the top here we have to ensure that we can really make it happen so that things work on a day like today. we are of course engaging with our own party here we need must decide if the fact of why we believe
2:25 pm
responsible governing has to be at the heart of everything we do because if you look at the biggest democracy of south america shows you that. miss such an ist. dictator has been elected essentially a populist who has simple solutions for complex problems which will not contribute to more peace. and this is why in the days to come it will be about making very clear what is important to us what we want is to ensure that democracy and freedom and the rule of law are protected by far right populists we're not governing for the sake of it we want to improve people's lives in this country we want to take people's problems seriously come up with solutions and implement the solutions and that's the best way to counter a populist both in germany and without that motivates us. but we have
2:26 pm
formulated specific. ways to make progress here so that this happens in germany and there's not been enough done in recent months and now we have to tackle these things. thank you questions mr wood cannot call it you want problem is now less if you coalition partner really positions their leadership that's not always so easy for your own party what would you wish to see of all of the many candidates for the proceeding leadership. well the same that i would like to see from the current party chair that we can work together in a reliable manner based on trust. so. what do you think the candidates will this will be a decision made by the delegates of the party congress to the c.d.u. party congress and kind of following on from that did you have
2:27 pm
a sense that you have been able to work in a reliable manner with ms mack of the party chair thus far there's been a great deal of criticism here and you're saying you want to make some clear agreements on implementing some of these government agreements who are going to make them with is still someone you can do that with and in terms of the bigger picture how is this you do you did eight impacting on the government coalition at the moment do you think everything's going to be so turbulent because they'll be. all these different candidates well for the c.d.u. to be rethinking and just looking for positions in terms of where they're going wouldn't be anything new is just a matter of that it's been public flick lately obviously there are conflicts that are smoldering and. you know behind closed doors but now these things are
2:28 pm
becoming more apparent and i'm sure that it decision will be made when there's a clear decision i'm very much hoping that this will mean there'll be a different course set for the party and that the struggle for the directions will not be over we'd like to have this clarity and i imagine it will be done at the party congress in december and that can only be good for us because smoldering untransparent conflicts are actually much harder than conflicts you address. which is why we are watching this space with great interest personally i've always had a good relationship to miss america as party chairman. and chancellor i hope we will continue the good work that we've done so far. problem for him is now as you've presented a road map of how the coalition can work together better moving forward can you
2:29 pm
tell us a bit about the difference between your road map and the coalition agreement well a coalition agreement is of course the basis for all of the cooperation between the coalition parties what we're trying to do is highlight certain things and of course we'll be debating it still and there will be some changes that will be tweaked we're going to focus on this on the weekend we're setting out what our priorities are because of course the agreement contains a great number of different points one of the things that we want to have implemented until we get to stocktaking and it's all interim review that we have set out to us something we want to do halfway along. term in office we just want to look at what our priorities are set out what they are focused on our priorities because we have sometimes very low level debates we quickly get in to craft arguments and difficulties and i think this coalition will manage to address
2:30 pm
the big issues that face the people whose country nursing care is a major issue people require better paid nursing care personnel so that they can have more. nursing care to patient ratio better patient ratios etc that's something we want to make progress and then we've got a child day care act so that we have. a better situation around the money that it costs to send your child to daycare that's an issue these are issues that we should have already finished but the experience that we've had in recent months though mean that. we get into so many discussions that we don't make the progress that we would have liked to seen and often this was overlapped by peripheral debates debates that.
